In this fascinating podcast John Reardon speaks with his great friend, William Andrewes who is one of the world's leading horologists, a historian, clockmaker, inventor, artist, and sundial maker. Will's career in the watch world has been extraordinary. In this part 1 of a two-part podcast, Andrewes explains how he started as an apprentice with the legendary watchmaker George Daniels, first completing an unfinished clock by John Harrison who solved the problem of finding longitude at sea. Andrewes shares several anecdotes of his time with George Daniels giving us a rare insight to one of the world's greatest watchmakers. After teaching at Eton College and working at the Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich, Will Andrewes's career moved across the pond when Seth Atwood asked him to be curator of the then most important horological museum, the Time Museum in Rockford, IL. Andrewes shares charming stories about the Time Museum including how Seth Atwood managed to buy the most important Patek Philippe watch ever made, the Graves Supercomplication directly from Henry Graves's grandson. In part 2, Will Andrewes shares his own explanation as to 'What is time?' and why he has devoted the current chapter of his career to making sundials. In this lively and personal interview, John Reardon talks with his first boss and mentor in the auction world, Daryn Schnipper. Daryn started her career at Sotheby's in 1980 straight out of college, and today is the chairman of the International Watch Division. For over 40 years, she has built an exceptional career and at one time, every watch department head of the top auction houses trained under Daryn's tutelage. Daryn was an early pioneer of wristwatches as a new collecting category and organized the first dedicated wristwatch auctions. Under her leadership, watch sales expanded in Geneva, and in 1997 she opened Sotheby's first Asian watch department in Hong Kong. Daryn has played a pivotal role in the sale of numerous important single owner watch and clock collections. These include the now iconic 1999 auction of the masterpieces from the Time Museum in which the Patek Philippe Graves Supercomplication hammered for USD11 million, a significant world record for any timepiece at auction at the time. In 2012, Daryn sold the horological collection of her friend and former colleague George Daniels for USD14 million. Among her many accolades, in 2017 Daryn was made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, the oldest horological guild in the world. As an art curator, Todd Levin is in that unique position where his attention to detail and the research that goes into what he does for a living, plays into his role when it comes to collecting. A collector of many things, from art, to watches, to rare jazz records, and architecture, Todd hasn't necessarily taken the typical approach to some of these. For example, Todd has always appreciated watches, but after reconnecting with watches once his Dad passed away, Todd went right for the big boys. No, not Patek, Rolex, or Audemars Piguet, but George Daniels and Philippe Dufour. That may not mean a lot to some of you, but for us watch nerds, that's BIG TIME. How about his new (but old) Frank Lloyd Wright house that has no 90 degree angles? Todd does things with a purpose and doesn't make any rash decisions, which we absolutely love. It's a side of collecting you don't see often. He isn't hoarding, or necessarily amassing, but artfully collecting with finesse. Take some notes. John Alan Resse is born and raised in Ohio, USA. He moved to Norway in 2002 with his Norwegian wife. He has two children and a daughter back home in the USA from a previous relationship. He talks about how he navigates the hardship in life when we don't see opportunities, and how he applies his insight in powerlifting into other aspects of his life. John has also made guest appearances on Norwegian TV broadcasting channels: TV2 and NRK where it's important to have media representation. He talks about his thoughts on crowdfunding for his new radio show to share more uplifting, inspiring and educational content; and makes an open call to the international community to band together so that we can support each other when we are barely surviving. Actions speak volumes to love and the social impact we want to create. The need to be seen and heard. John founded and hosted The Comin' Home Podcast, which is now turned into a FM radio show. John is currently a writer, singer-songwriter, champion and record-holding powerlifter, standup comedian, podcaster, and radio program producer, creator, and host. He was a former US Marine and US police officer who worked as a narcotics and gang detective, crime scene technician and juvenile officer for 7 years in the U.S.A. In Norway, he has worked as a project leader, music teacher, child services case worker, and consultant for the Norwegian Police Immigration Service, and founded 3 gyms. His podcast was inspired by his own search for motivation and meaning after losing his son to heroin overdose in November 2019. In this podcast we highlight some other lots, including a trio of Patek Phillipe 5970's and a unique Zenith x Voutilainen X Phillips, developed with the 1950's 135-O caliber.Christie's is auctioning a fantastic collection, including 12 Girard Perregaux pieces, a one-off Parmigiani Toric with Westminster gong and a platinum F.P. Journe with a red dial and Ferrari logo.
Australia is about as far away from the watchmaking centres of the world as it's possible to get. That hasn't stopped Reuben Schoots, hailing from our nations capital, from learning the art, and building his own watch, from scratch. Several years ago, while Schoots was recovering from chronic illnesses he picked up while travelling, he was introduced to the world of mechanical watches and dived in head-first. Like many people newly enamoured with the topic, he picked up a copy of George Daniels' Watchmaking. Unlike many people he understood it. More than that, he undertook his own Daniels-inspired watchmaking project. This led to an interest in tool-making and, later, CNC technology. Next thing you know, Schoots has pre-sold six pieces from his first series, and watchmaking in Australia might very well be about to enter a new era. Nathalie Marielloni has had an extraordinary career in horology. It has taken her to some of the most important watchmaking related museums in the world: the Patek Philippe Museum, Museum of Art and History Geneva and the International Watchmaking Museum (MIH) in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Her career is a clear reflection of where her passion lies as she has mastered the demanding Swiss watchmaking school WOSTEP, is a GIA Graduate Gemologist, and has even been awarded the title of Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers following the successful sale of the George Daniels collection which she curated during her time at Sotheby's, London. As charming as she is accomplished, her conversation with Carlos Torres offers an insight into how a relatively short career so far has garnered a fascinating resume that would be hard to match in the watchmaking world.
Carlos Torres interviews independent Danish watchmaker Christian Lass who spent a decade as Master watchmaker at the Patek Philippe Museum, Geneva. Inspired to become a watchmaker by reading 'Watchmaking' by George Daniels, Lass apprenticed with Søren Anderson after watchmaking school, and then Vianney Halter who taught him how to make a watch from scratch. It was through his friend Philippe Dufour that he heard about a rare opening at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. During his time with Patek Philippe, he had the privilege to work on legendary timepieces such as the ref. 2499 and the Graves Supercomplication. After returning to his native Denmark, Christian Lass made his dream come true and started his own watchmaking company.

Whoosh! That's the sound of George Daniels passing you at your last race, and if you've been running the trails here in CT the last few years, good chance you've heard that whoosh and seen the man pass you at some point. Don't worry it's happened to all of us. George sits down and explains where he came from and what he was doing the previous 56 years before ultrarunning stardom. Fred has been running a bit and both Becky and Art have their own semi-decent streaks nipping on the heels of Mr. Murolo's epic streak. Jimmy's been jackassing around back and forth on the canal trail, readying himself for Boston. Shenanigans abound.
