The Game Changers podcast celebrates those true pioneers in education who are building schools for tomorrow. In episode 195 (Part 3) of Game Changers, Phil Cummins joins in conversation with Homa Sabet Tavangar Born in Iran, raised in the U.S., and having lived in South America and Africa, Homa Sabet Tavangar's life and work have led her on a journey exploring the roots of purpose, innovation and belonging. Homa connects timely topics with the timeless desire to work with intention and make a difference — whatever one's circumstances. As co-founder of BigQuestions.Institute and OnenessLab.com, she partners with thought leaders dedicated to re-imagining learning and work while centering equity, inquiry and innovation. Homa's innovative approach has led schools and companies from crisis to global citizenship and competence in ways that create belonging across perspectives. Her approach fosters empathy, collaboration, diversity, inclusion, leadership, futures thinking, and creative problem-solving in complex, multicultural settings, — and re-imagines academic institutions and workplaces for the 21st Century. Homa is the author of widely-acclaimed books, including Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World (Random House, 2009), Global Kids: 50+ Games, Crafts, Recipes & More from Around the World (Barefoot Books, 2019), The Global Education Toolkit for Elementary Learners (Sage/Corwin, 2014), co-author of a 3-book series with Professor Yong Zhao on educating creative, entrepreneurial World Class Learners (Corwin, 2016), and contributor to Mastering Global Literacy, by Heidi Hayes-Jacobs, ed. (Solution Tree, 2013). Most recently she co-authored 9 BIG Questions Schools Must Answer to Avoid Going “Back to Normal” (*Because “Normal” Wasn't That Great to Begin With). Her work has been hailed by international education and business leaders and media — from Dr. Jane Goodall to the BBC, NPR, NBC, ABC, Washington Post.com, Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, Boston Globe, PBS, Scholastic, Parents Magazine, Rodale, and many more. Growing Up Global has been a best-seller in Parenting, Education, and Globalization categories, and introduced the possibilities of raising and educating global citizens to a wide audience. Her article on Empathy was Edutopia's most shared piece for four continuous years. Global Kids is the winner of the 2021 Tilliwig Best Children's Products award. Homa translates culture, diversity, innovation and globalization trends and breakthroughs into academic and social-emotional learning in ways that empower CEOs, teachers, parents and learners from Kindergarten to graduate students thrive in a global context — and have fun along the way. She advises entertainment pioneers Disney Channel and Empatico.org on cultural bias, and NBC's Sprout TV on script development and cultural elements in the ambitious, young children's animated series “Nina's World,” based in part on Growing Up Global, and starring Rita Moreno and Mandy Patinkin. Are you an introverted extrovert? For this Women of Color Rise, I speak with Dominique Jones, CEO of Global Kids, a national organization educating, inspiring and activating youth to respond to global issues. Prior to this, Dominique held roles as the Executive Director of the Harlem Girls and Boys Club of New York and senior roles at the Food Bank of New York City and NYC Administration for Children's Services. A self-proclaimed introverted extrovert, Dominique shares that she used to think she needed to be someone else when she networked. Now she realizes that the key to networking is to be herself. Dominique shares tips to build genuine and authentic connections: 1) Acknowledge challenges - For women of color, we are taught that we need to be someone else when networking. We face unique challenges as sometimes one of the few or only in a room of people who do not look like us. At the same time, we have probably developed a unique skill of being multilingual, with the ability to speak to different people (people who don't look like us or share experiences with us). We can use this skill to our advantage when networking. 2) Be intentional - Know what you need and who you need to connect with. Before an event, map out the specific people you want to network with. 3) Be present and curious - Be ready to meet them where they are and ask and learn about their experiences. Find things you have in common, including interests and experiences. You can even disarm them with a compliment; Dominique says complimenting them on their clothes works on both men and women. The key is to be genuine. 4) Think about the interaction not as a one-time event and find ways to be helpful - This is probably not the last time you'll meet. Dominique tends to ask, “How can I be of service to you?” This opens up discussions where you can validate them, offer suggestions, and share resources (including introductions or opportunities). 5) Be yourself and find ways to keep yourself energized - For Dominique, she'll wear bright colors to lift her mood. She'll also identify people she already knows who are attending an event so she can have something to look forward to. Welcome back to BeREAL! This week, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Diana Limongi to discuss post election fatigue, pandemic exhaustion, and parenting during COVID. Diana Limongi is a bilingual nonprofit professional, blogger, activist, podcaster and Latina mom. On her blog she writes about motherhood, life in NYC and raising bilingual and multicultural kids. Her podcast, Parenting and Politics, seeks to inform, inspire and empower parents to take action and make a difference. As a nonprofit professional and activist, Diana has experience in digital content creation and organizing, working with organizations that help mothers, children and families. She has worked with the Aspen Institute, ZERO TO THREE, ParentsTogether, Global Kids, MomsRising/MamasConPoder and was a UN Shot@Life Champion. Diana (from BeWELL) and Ednesha begin the episode by discussing the recent fatigue they have been feeling. This is a culmination of post election fatigue as well as exhaustion due to the long lasting COVID-19 pandemic. They discuss how seasonal affective disorder will only build on this as we enter the winter months. They also discuss how normally they don't disclose much about their current mood or mental health situation to patients, but during these times they find themselves being more candid than before. Diana Limongi joins in the episode and begins by telling the hosts about how her life is going during quarantine. She quickly moves into talking about the 2020 election. She talks about the work that she did through donations and social media campaigns to spread knowledge about the different choices on the ballots. She advises parents how to manage their time if they would like to contribute to a political campaign, but might see it as too big of a commitment with their kids doing school from home. Diana (the host) brings up how voting is hard and the election fatigue she faced since she realized she was voting in New Jersey for the first time. Diana Limongi agrees that voting is complex, and shares some resources for people to get more informed about their local politics. As the episode winds down, Limongi brings the focus of the conversation to the Department of Education. She outlines the issues she is seeing in regards to the DOE's reaction to COVID and how many of it's last minute decisions are inducing anxiety within parents. While voicing favorable solutions to the situations she is facing, Diana also offers some advice to parents of how to practice self care during these times. Thank you for tuning into BeREAL this week! Be on the lookout for an all new episode next Tuesday. Those who follow the Brave Educator podcast likely noted when a week ago, June 15, 2020 there was no Monday episode. I called it "taking a week off," but the truth is, the episode was already recorded. Not unlike the poem or prose I skip over in memoirs about the sexual violence, the rape, that I survived as a child, it's sometimes easier to just try to forget. I met Amita Swadhin back in January 2016 at USC during an Education Summit I directed. It was the first time in an education space I heard someone talk about sexual trauma. It was uncomfortable, but it was among a few moments when I felt I'd encountered someone more brave than me; and so it pushed me to consider those strategic silences I held onto. I could talk about being queer, about being HIV positive, about racial trauma...but not that. The reality is that it's still scary; and the scars that the experience had on me as a young child, has been not just a part of my struggle, but my story. I'm not who I am today without it. In Season 1, Episode 7, Amita and I talk about why the sexual violence we survived as children, far from making us less capable as professionals, makes us better at what we do. It's 10:15 pm on the day I generally share the new podcast first in the morning. Maybe I'm still nervous about releasing it. Perhaps a part of me fears what exposing this may mean for how others view me going forward. Maybe they will see me as all the more brave. Maybe they will understand what it feels like to be on a life-long journey ... to be protected.Amita Swadhin is an educator, storyteller, activist and consultant dedicated to fighting interpersonal and institutional violence against young people. Her commitments and approach to this work stem from her experiences as a genderqueer, femme queer woman of color, daughter of immigrants, and years of abuse by her parents, including eight years of rape by her father. They are a frequent speaker at colleges, conferences and community organizations nationwide, and a consultant with over fifteen years of experience in nonprofits serving low-income, immigrant and LGBTQ youth of color in Los Angeles and New York City. Amita has been publicly out as a survivor of child sexual abuse since she interned at the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women in 1997. In 2016, Amita received a two-year Just Beginnings Collaborative Fellowship, allowing them to work full-time to end child sexual abuse and to help survivors heal. From March 2012 to September 2015, Amita was the Los Angeles Executive Director of Peer Health Exchange, a national nonprofit empowering teens to make healthy decisions. In the fall of 2015, they were the Interim Executive Director of API Equality-LA, whose mission is to build power in the Asian and Pacific Islander community to achieve LGBTQ equality and racial and social justice. Amita has held positions at Legal Momentum, Global Kids, Make the Road NY, Sadie Nash Leadership Project and Kingsborough Community College (CUNY), and served as the final Board Chair of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, a national organization advocating for and with LGBTQ youth. Amita is also a published author. Their writing has been featured on The Feminist Wire and The Huffington Post, and in the anthologies Dear Sister: Letters from Survivors of Sexual Violence (AK Press, 2014) and Queering Sexual Violence (Magnus Books, 2016). She holds a Master's in Public Administration degree from New York University, where she was a Catherine B. Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship, and a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.

The film educates people about climate change and its effects upon humans, social justice in relation to climate justice, and environmental racism. Jaysa and Lynne have spoken after film screenings including the Belmont World Film Festival and the Climate Action Film Festival. Here's the Words Have Power lesson plan. The mission of the Young Voices for the Planet film series is to to limit the magnitude of climate change and its impacts by empowering children and youth, through uplifting and inspiring success stories, to take an essential role in informing their communities — and society at large, challenging decision-makers, and catalyzing change. They document youth speaking out, creating solutions and leading the change. These youth solutions to the climate crisis include stories of California kids banning plastic bags, Florida students saving their school $53,000 in energy costs, an 11-year-old German boy planting millions of trees and other young people changing laws, changing minds and changing society as they reduce the carbon footprint of their homes, schools and communities. Some vital YVFP partners:Zinn Education Project's - Teach Climate Justice ("Words Have Power" is included among these resources)Our Children's Trust (Juliana v US) Making the Case forScience-Based Climate ActionCELF (Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation) where students and teachers view "Words Have Power" as part of their citizen-science program and use AirBeam air quality monitors to check air pollution in their own neighborhood, making the links between contaminants, environmental policy and environmental health. They then work in teams to synthesize their findings and recommendations, and share these with their community.YVFP also supports these state and federal initiatives:New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky has introduced Senate Bill S6837that establishes a climate change education grant program. In 2016, thanks to a campaign by ACE and Global Kids, the NYC Council passed Resolution 0375-2014calling on the New York State Department of Education to include climate change lessons in the State's K-12 curriculum.Spurred by youth climate strikers, California Congresswoman, Barbara Lee, introduced a House resolution - H.Res 574 - in September 2019, supporting the teaching of climate change in U.S. schools. And last but not least, here are a few links showing the relationship between Air Pollution & Corona VirusWired: Pandemic has led to huge drop in air pollutionTime: Global Air Pollution down due to corona virusNYT: Air Pollution linked to higher corona deathsFast Company reports similarly in this April 2020 article by Adele Peters: "The Most Polluted Parts of the US Are More At Risk for Coronavirus Deaths."In an April 2020 Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Study, "Exposure to air pollution and COVID-19 mortality in the United States", researchers found:"…that an increase of only 1 g/m3 in PM2.5 [fine particulate matter] is associated with a 15% increase in the COVID-19 death rate, 95% confidence interval (CI) (5%, 25%).
