“You got your Oscar, which was an unfortunate night for everyone…” - Steve on Will Smith On this week's episode, we're kicking off a two-episode tribute to the legendary Gene Hackman with a convo about the better-than-you-remember surveillance thriller, Enemy of the State! First off, this ain't no sequel to The Conversation, let's get that straight! But you do have an amazingly cranky and paranoid Gene Hackman running around with a nearly never-better Will Smith as they dodge Jon Voight and his stable of late-90's Gen-X character actors! Why was the great Jason Robards uncredited? Same question for Philip Baker Hall! Why couldn't a rocket hit Jamie Kennedy and Seth Green's surveillance van? And how incredible is that effect shot with Jason Lee and the firetruck? PLUS: Brill interrogates the Peanuts Gang! Enemy of the State stars Will Smith, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, Regina King, Stuart Wilson, Barry Pepper, Ian Hart, Jake Busey, Scott Chan, Jason Lee, Gabriel Byrne, James Le Gros, Dan Butler, Jack Black, Jamie Kennedy, Bodhi Elfman, Anna Gunn, Lillo Brancato, John Capodice, Ivana Milicevic, Grant Heslov, Seth Green, Philip Baker Hall, Jason Robards, Tom Sizemore, and the late, forever great, Gene Hackman as Brill; directed by Tony Scott.
If you want to make our Hannah angry, simply refer to God's Own Country, Francis Lee's 2017 film about love between an isolated young sheep farmer (Josh O'Connor) and a Romanian migrant worker (Alex Secareanu) set on a failing farm, as the Yorkshire Brokeback Mountain and watch her Bruce Banner it up. And right enough. It's fair to say that love for this film, for its cast (hello also Ian Hart and Gemma Jones) and for its closing song from Patrick Wolf is in the air for Yosra and Mick, too. So please enjoy three women having a lovely chat about a wonderful bit of cinema. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. HELP is the riveting story of a struggling young woman, Sarah, played by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), who is smart, but has never fit in, not in education and not in work. Her family told her she'd never amount to anything but she unexpectedly finds her calling as a carer at Bright Sky Homes. Sarah has a special talent for connecting with the residents, including one in particular, 47-year-old Tony, played by Stephen Graham (Boiling Point). Tony's Young Onset Alzheimer's has left him living out his days in care as his mind slowly deteriorates. His illness causes periods of confusion and violent outbursts, which the other members of staff can't handle, but with Sarah he begins to build a real bond. Sarah's success at managing Tony and the other patients helps build her confidence and restore her self-belief. Then March 2020 hits and everything Sarah has achieved is thrown into doubt with the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic. She and her colleagues tirelessly fight tooth and nail, ill-equipped, poorly prepared, and seemingly left helpless by the powers that be. A determined Sarah goes to extraordinary lengths to protect those in her care, whose conditions make their suffering and isolation all the more traumatic. But the staff's unwavering commitment, compassion and heroic efforts can only do so much, and Sarah is pushed into a dark corner and desperately looks for a way out. Director Marc Munden stops by to talk about working with the HELP writer Jack Thorne on this and other projects, enlisting a superb cast of gifted actors, led by Jodie Comer, Stephen Graham, Ian Hart and Cathy Tyson, to tell a timely and timeless story of compassion and finding the courage to face down the deadly chaos of an unfathomable pandemic and institutional neglect. MuggleCast excitedly kicks off the year 2022 with their review of the brand new Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts reunion special! Join Andrew, Eric, Micah and Laura as they go "chapter-by-chapter" on the 100 minute show and discuss the highs and lows, cast members who were noticeably absent, and how the reunion special did or didn't meet their expectations. We also have a mail-bag show next week, so be sure to send us YOUR thoughts on the special! 2022 started off with a brand new Reunion Special, looking back on the making of all 8 films and featuring the cast including Dan, Rupert and Emma Harry Potter Reunion Special First Impressions: did it satisfy our craving? Did it make us cry? (Spoiler alert: yes, it did.) Andrew found the beginning to be a little clunky, and the fact that Rupert, Dan and Emma were not physically all in the same space was ultimately a missed opportunity. Laura thinks the special would have benefitted from having a dedicated host to guide us through the many different interviews and set a more static tone for the special. Micah wanted to see more groups together and would have expected a higher focus on the first film, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary and not the others. Eric wanted more Ian Hart! They brought him in for a whole day and he only appears in the last 5 minutes of the show? Release the Snyder Cut of Back to Hogwarts, you cowards! We all appreciate getting to hear from all 4 directors who helmed the Potter films. Dan Radcliffe's chat with Chris Columbus and some archival footage of the young trio warmed all of our hearts, multiple times. Hearing Alfonso Cuarón discuss Prisoner of Azkaban changed Micah's mind on the film! Eric is not so cheaply bought... but admits that Cuarón clearly really cares and that his take on Harry's adolescence is valid. Dan Radcliffe and Gary Oldman's chat shows that they truly mean a lot to one another and is great to see. After seeing Mike Newell wrestle with the Phelps Twins and break some of his own ribs while doing so, everything we've ever wondered about why the Goblet of Fire movie is the way it is makes perfect sense. The trio talking teenage hormones reignites the spark of all of our ships, including Emma and Tom who CLEARLY HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON... ...but perhaps not as much as Dan and Helena Bonham Carter! That steamy handwritten note, wowza... The hosts lament the exclusion of a Sirius/Bellatrix duel that was evidently filmed, and recount other surprising times during this special where an actor says something shocking which paints director choices in a questionable light. Evanna Lynch appears with an inspirational message for the outsiders in all of us. The cast discussing their on-screen kisses is very popcorn worthy, even if the kisses themselves weren't all so. The In Memoriam segment touches us all as we reflect on cast members who are no longer with us, and the nice things said about them in this special. RIP also to Millie the hamster. We never knew ye before! The special ends back at the beginning, with footage of the 11-year-old trio, and lots of emotional admissions from the actors about each other and the films' legacy. The hosts discuss JK Rowling's appearance in archived footage and what mystery still remains about her involvement in this special. Quizzitch: What is the name of Rupert Grint's child? Submit your answer! Finally, Eric and Micah played Fandom Feud last week, with fellow members of HP Fandom to benefit trans-supportive charities. Check out the whole video of both games they played over on YouTube!

Kann das gutgehen?
In this week's episode, we discuss Land and Freedom, Ken Loach's 1995 film about a British Communist (played by Ian Hart) fighting for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. With a script from screenwriter Jim Allen, Loach uses his trademark naturalistic style to explore a series of sad and harrowing events faced by the POUM militia soldiers. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 48th Cannes Film Festival. It's time to tackle some heavy material...or rather it would be if Blackman's intriguing premise weren't executed better. Once again we're left wondering if we're reading Middle Grade YA because there's not enough world building and the "absolute power corrupts absolutely" take-away is too simple.The BBC series plays better because the influence of the dominant culture is visualized and while the tendency to amp up the (Baz Luhrman's) Romeo & Juliet love story is the least interesting aspect, at least the politics of this Albion are clear right from the start. Gin has been on one hell of a journey, from earning the name ‘Mother's Ruin' during the Gin Craze of the 18th century, to becoming a symbol of sophistication and decadence in recent years. Hilary Whitney and her husband Ian Hart are two people we have to thank for the resurgence of gin in Britain. Together they launched Sacred Spirits in 2008, with the aim of reframing its connection with the city of London in a better light. Hilary is today's guest and she explains how a simple hobby led to the creation of a formidable and much-loved brand. In this episode discover how the world of online gin tasting is flourishing, find out why you don't need to reinvent the wheel to find success, and learn to take the plunge and stop overthinking the process. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epGuid: 'behindthespine.podbean.com/74903f0c-f13f-34db-ab3f-276cb06ae19f', rssUrl: 'https://feed.podbean.com/behindthespine/feed.xml', backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
Join us for a discussion of the 1991 film The Hours and Times, starring Ian Hart as John Lennon and David Angus as Brian Epstein. The movie looks at a much-discussed (and debated) trip John and Brian took to Barcelona in April 1963, and imagines what may (or may not) have happened. We thought the film was artfully done and thought-provoking, and worth your viewing time (it's only 60 minutes). An interesting film off the beaten path! Also, send us your questions for our special 175th episode where we'll answer audience questions. You can ask on our Facebook page, Twitter, or email us at ivegotabeatlespodcast@hotmail.com.

Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. In the latest episode, Scott is joined by Steven to chat about slaughterhouses, suicides and Sinead O’Connor. Join us we take a look at the darkest of dark comedies, The Butcher Boy from 1997, directed by Neil Jordan and starring Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Brendan Gleason and Ian Hart. Francie and Joe live the usual playful, fantasy filled childhoods of normal boys. However, with a violent, alcoholic father and a manic depressive, suicidal mother the pressure on Francie to grow up are immense. When Francie's world turns to madness, he tries to counter it with further insanity, with dire consequences. “And that was the end of the goldfish, because from now on I was gonna be good. And if anyone was looking for Francie the Bad Bastard, they wouldn't find him because he was busy getting the Francie-Not-a-Bad-Bastard-Anymore diploma.” You can find this and all of our previous episodes at: Apple Podcasts Libsyn Player FM Podtail Owltail ListenNotes Follow us on Twitter @rbritanniapod Join us over at our Facebook Group ….we’d love to chat with you email: reelbritannia@gmail.com Thanks for listening Scott and Steven

In episode 4 Tom, Marco and Will go back in time to Apartheid-era South Africa with Escape to Pretoria, where we find Tim Jenkin (Daniel Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber) locked up for helping the ANC and their ensuing prison break attempt. Also this week, Will brings in the single-barrel, award-winning whisky Nova from Melbourne's Starward distillery. Director Francis Annan discusses his film Escape from Pretoria. Daniel Radcliffe and Ian Hart star in the true story of the imprisonment of white anti-apartheid campaigners in the 1970s and their incredible escape from South Africa’s maximum-security Pretoria prison. Did you know that amateur dramatics is the third most popular pastime in the UK after fishing and football? Michael Coveney has been a theatre reviewer for four decades and in his new book Questors, Jesters and Renegades he tells the story of Britain’s amateur theatrical companies. He is joined by Clare Greer from the Bangor Drama Club in Northern Ireland, established in 1935. Denise Mina is acclaimed for her award-winning crime fiction, and now she’s turned her hand to crime of a different nature. Bertolt Brecht famously said 'What is robbing a bank compared with founding a bank?'. Denise discusses Mrs Puntila and her Man Matti, her new gender-swapping adaptation of a Brecht play which seeks to show how the law is always on the side of the wealthy. My guest on the podcast is Tom Pennings, Founder and CEO of Onsophic He’s what he calls a highly technical entrepreneur, technology enthusiast and business networker. He’s worked for Borland, EVS, Google and Apple. Inspired by bringing data to the learning process, he and his co-founder Ian Hart assembled a team on two continents to connect digital transformation and assisted intelligence. This was the start of Onsophic. Unlike many Learning Management systems on the market Onsophic is about intelligently guiding every single employee in a company to optimize learning effectiveness and achieve their business objectives, rather than just delivering the training material and process. In doing so it not only increases the performance of global enterprises but also accelerates their human potential. This inspired me, hence I invited Tom to my podcast. During our interview we’ll explore how the education process is broken and how that creates a gap between HR and the business objectives any organization has. We also address what questions business leaders should really ask, and what mindset they should embrace to succeed with Digital Transformation, customer centricity, risk and compliance and learning 4.0. Here are some of Tom’s quotes: We bridge the gap between HR and the business objectives by correlating training with on‑the‑job performance.There's 536 different LMS solutions out there. What that really is, is I would say ‑‑ and this not meant negative ‑‑ it is a content delivery…. facilitating the delivery processThe challenges is, our opinion, not with the delivery process. It is about guiding each and every individual.Ultimately, Onsophic's goal is accelerating the human potential. The biggest win is acceleration of their human potential, but also in time.Very many CEOs underestimate the value of the people in their companyIt's really the people that drives a company.It's really important to make sure that you make strategic decisions on making the cake, getting the most out of these peopleI'm not talking about getting more performance out of them by implementing rules to make them work harder. No, it's about making, really, the work lighter on your human potential and get the most out of it. By listening to this interview, you will learn three things:1) That the best results are achieved when process, people and intelligence augmentation blend in the right way2) That we have to increment the skills and capabilities of the workforce while we are bringing in new tools and technologies into the workplace3) That gut-feel is often a very good guide to follow in order to pivot the trajectory of your business – and that spending time on assembling a team with the same believes and passion is essential to scale the horsepower behind your business.
