Since its adoption as a first aid method, the Heimlich Manoeuvre has saved untold numbers of lives around the world. Developed by American physician Dr Henry Heimlich as a way to save choking victims from dying, his manoeuvre would become famous just weeks after it was written about in a medical journal. But as well as his namesake manoeuvre, Heimlich was responsible for several other medical innovations throughout his life.Ashley Byrne hears from Janet Heimlich, one of Dr Heimlich's children.A Made In Manchester/Workerbee co-production for the BBC World Service.(Photo: Dr Henry Heimlich demonstrates the Heimlich manoeuvre on host Johnny Carson in 1979. Dr. John McDougall was drawn to medicine because of his own health “fate.” At 18, he suffered a massive stroke and was an anomaly to the doctors in Michigan who wanted to explore “why” and “how” this could happen to someone so young. This health scare inspired his own journey to become a doctor, which eventually led McDougall and his wife, Mary, to Hawaii to practice medicine on a sugar plantation in Hawaii and service over 5,000 residents. What he saw there changed the course of his medical practice forever. The healthiest people on the island, the first-generation elders who had come from China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, were the healthiest and most vibrant people…still active, with no medications, and still in bodies fit for movement. It was their children and grandchildren, however, those second and third generations, that were struggling. Why? They had adopted a western diet of meat, dairy, and processed foods. The secret, Dr. McDougall discovered, was STARCH. Those healthy islanders subsisted on a diet comprised mostly of rice, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits and THAT inspired the work he does today through his McDougall programs and education. Beyond diet, the McDougalls are also dedicated to informing citizens about the positive effects of dietary therapy on chronic disease and our Planet. Animal agriculture, as we're learning, is also one of the main culprits contributing to climate change and we discuss all of his “four deadly dietary deceptions” outlined at mcdougallfoundation.org. It's an inspiring conversation from one of the legends and it was an honor to sit down with Dr. John McDougall. I know of no one savvier about getting it done and moving forward than actor, director, inventor, innovator, mentor, treasured friend, and Golden Globe Nominee for Happy Days, Anson Williams. Anson's wisdom has been invaluable to me, and he shared loads of it with us. And, fantastic stories––how he created opportunities as a kid, and then with Garry Marshall, Ron Howard, Steven Speilberg, QVC, the IPs he's developing now, and his lifesaving, Alert Drops, created with his 2nd cousin Henry Heimlich. Anson shared about the people who've shaped and inspired him, and a couple of examples of how he's paid it forward––something he's done all of his life and continues to do to this day, including wisdom for me––for us––shared here. Like, how to get off the couch and out of pandemic quicksand, the value of perceived failure, the three most important words (and why they are), and give what you want to get… these were just a few of the life tool gems Anson shared. Anson leads by example, just yesterday he was awarded Best Director for Viral Vingenttes by the Crown Point International Film Festival. The film also won Best Narrative Feature and Best Ensemble. Along with Donny Most, Anson's long-time best friend since Happy Days, Anson won The Best Acting Duo Award from the International Short Film Festival for Harvest Time, which he also directed. Anson never lets grass grow, he's always got all the burners cooking. Thanks to his not so gentle nudges, this show and I, continue to shift. I always hear Anson in my head nudging me forward. Today, thanks to the power of his example of mentorship, I tried something new, broke my routine, to shake things up and move forward. Oh, I still complained, but progress, not perfection. I couldn't love and adore this man, more. I'm inspired anew and trust you will be, too. Most of us know this well-known actor as Potsie on the award-winning TV series “Happy Days.” Anson Williams was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and got a Golden Globe for that popular show. In 2011 Williams and four of his co-stars on “Happy Days” filed a lawsuit against CBS claiming they hadn't been paid merchandising revenues. They each received $65,000 in the suit. Williams as an actor, singer, and director has been involved in many TV productions including “Laverne and Shirley.” A little-known trivia fact is: Anson's uncle Dr. Henry Heimlich is the inventor of the Heimlich Maneuver. Anson explains how he got the name Potsie and reveals some inside info about the show.

In the 1960s, choking was a national epidemic. In the United States alone, close to 4,000 people were dying from choking every year. Lobster, ham, and hamburger were common culprits. But steak was by far the greatest offender. Coroners called for a solution to these “Cafe Coronaries,” and the medical community responded with weird and dangerous gadgets: vacuum tubes and long tweezers. But Dr. Henry Heimlich knew this problem required something else; a simple technique that anyone can use to save the lives of choking victims—the Heimlich Maneuver. The Heimlich Maneuver would save the lives of thousands of people, including Carrie Fisher, Cher, New York Mayor Ed Koch, and at least one American President. And yet, Dr. Heimlich would spend a decade fighting for the legitimacy of his life-saving maneuver.Listen to new episodes 1 week early and ad free, and access exclusive seasons of American Innovations with Wondery+. These Pen Pals Were So In Sync, They Passed Away On The Same Day! Welcome to June 1st, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate bridging the gap in a single stroke and a life saver that stands the test of time. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were what you might call frenemies. They were very close as they worked on the Declaration of Independence, but had a big falling out after the presidential election in 1800. For the next 12 years, they didn't speak. But when a mutual friend died in 1813, Jefferson wrote a letter to tell Adams the bad news. Adams wrote back to say thank you and shared some of his memories. They slowly rebuilt their friendship over the next 13 years, corresponding until the day they died. And, ironically, they passed on the same day—July 4th 1826. On National Pen Pal Day, take some time to reach out to a friend or strike up a correspondence with someone new. It's hard to say how many lives have been affected by Dr. Henry Heimlich. Some estimate that his abdominal thrust technique has been performed successfully over 50,000 times since 1974! This procedure is so simple that even young people with very little training have been able to save choking victims. Dr. Heimlich did not use the method himself until he was 96 years old, when he saved a woman that lived in his nursing home. What an amazing testament to the power of a method that can still be used by both young and old. On National Heimlich Maneuver Day, we celebrate this life saving technique and the man who invented it. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

Today's episode features a man who wears many hats in the entertainment industry. ANSON WILLIAMS earned a special place in the hearts of TV viewers as Potsie Weber on the ABC-TV series 'Happy Days.' After ten seasons in front of the camera on that hit show, Anson continued with many endeavors, including a very successful career directing behind the camera. It was an honor to have Anson as my featured guest to discuss all that and more! You'll get to hear him relive some memorable moments in his career, such as a the day Robin Williams debuted on the show as Mork From Ork. You'll also learn why after 'Happy Days', he decided to not make a singing career his priority. However, to Anson Williams, all those wonderful things pale in comparison to a product that he developed in collaboration with his late uncle Dr. Henry Heimlich ... ALERT DROPS' It is a natural wake-up aid that is sprayed on the tongue to make you alert and prevent a tragic automobile accident, and is, to quote Anson, "the most important thing I've ever done!" Information is below with a link. Plus Anson will give some great inspiration and advice. Enjoy the show, everybody!More info on Anson and Alert Drops at www.alertdrops.com

Welcome to the History of computing podcast. Today we're going to review A Brief History of Time - no, not that brief history of time. But instead how time has evolved in computing. We love old things still being used on this podcast. Time is important; so important that it's epic! Or epoch more specifically. The epoch is a date and time from which a computer measures the time on the system. Most operating systems derive their time from the number of seconds that have passed since January 1st, 1970 when the clock struck midnight, when time began - likely the Catch-22 that the movie was made based on, later that year. This queue is taken from Unix Epoch time. Different systems use different time as their epoch. MATLAB uses January 0, 1BC - which is all you need to know about Matlab developers, really. COBOL used January 1, 1601, likely indicating that was the year Cobol was written. OK so it isn't - but I'm guessing it's when many of the philosophies of the language were first conceived. Time must seem like it started on January first 2001 to Apple's Cocoa framework, which began epoch then. My least favorite would be AmigaOS, which started Epoch time on January first 1978 - Nothing good happened in 1978. Jaws 2 and Halloween were released that year. Yuck. Well, Animal House was pretty good. But I could do without Boogie Oogie Oogie. And I could do without Andy Gib's Shadow Dancing. Disco died the next year. As did the soul of anyone that had to use an Amiga. Due to how many modern encryption protocols work, you want to keep time in sync between computers. A skew, or offset in that time, by even microseconds can impact the ability to decrypt data. This lead to the Network Time Protocol, or NTP for short. NTP NTP was designed by David L. Mills of the University of Delaware. It is a networking protocol that provides for clock synchronization between computer systems over standard data networks. NTP has been running since 1985, making it one of the oldest Internet protocols still in use today, with the most updated specs defined in RFC 958. `date +%s` NTP has had a number of updates over the years, although they have slowed as it became more popular. NTP 0 was released in 1985, the same year as the Goonies, Pale Rider, the Breakfast Club and ironically Back to the Future. Given that NTP was free, it's also ironic that Dire Straits released Money for Nothing the same year it was released. Simple Minds, Aha, and Tears for Fears ruled the airwaves that year, with Tears for Fears proving that Everyone wants to rule the world, but despite being free, NTP is the one on all computers, thus outlasting the rest and being the one that ended up ruling the world. Version 1 came in 1988, 2 in 1989, , 3 in 1992, and NTPv4 was drafted in 2010 but has not yet been published given how dependent we as an IT industry now is on NTP. To better understand how dependent we are, let's look at the three main platforms: In Windows, you can just “Double-click the system clock and then click on the Internet Time tab.” On Mac, open System Preferences > Date & Time which configures the /usr/libexec/timed launchdaemon And on Linux, open System > Admin >Time and Date. These screens allow you to enter an NTP Server. NTP is short for Network Time Protocol. NIST Internet Time Service (ITS) provides 24 names of Network Time Servers, and each vendor often operates their own, such as time.apple.com. Each machine then operates a time zone offset. You know Apple's time servers because you can read them plain as day by default if you cat /private/etc/ntp.conf - it just outputs server time.apple.com. I'd tell you how to do it in Windows but it would blow your mind. OK, I'll do it anyways: Just reg query HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParameters and then read the value of the NtpServer field in the output. OK, not mind blowing. But what is mind blowing? The Big Bang is mind blowing. Not the TV show; that's not. NTP uses 64-bit timestamps. Those consist of a 32-bit portion used for seconds and a 32-bit portion used for a fraction of a second, meaning that it rolls every 232 seconds, which is 136 years. NTPv4 will still need to get ratified by February 7th, 2036, if only to cover the first rollover. NTPv4 moving to a 128-bit date format should take us until the next Big Bang when this stuff won't matter any more. Mills was an interesting cat. He got his PhD in Computer Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1971, where he worked on ARPA projects wrote terminal software that provided connections to the IBM360 mainframe. He also worked on the Exterior Gateway Protocol. He initially invented NTP in 1981 and was a professor in computer science at the University of Delaware from 1986 to 2008. He's still an emeritus professor at the University of Delaware. In 1610 (a few years after the COBOL epoch), the English naval officer Samuel Argall named the Delaware River and Delaware Bay after then governor of Virginia, Thomas West. West happened to be the 12th Baron De La Warr. Did you know that Delaware was the first state to ratify the constitution on December 7th 1787? Delaware is the diamond state, and the second smallest state in the Union. The state insect is a lady bug. Ryan Phillippe is probably more famous than NTP, even though he killed disco with his awful acting in Studio 54. Henry Heimlich is from Delaware. Hopefully you don't need to use his infamous maneuver as often as NTP gets updated. Elisabeth Shue is also from Delaware. The Karate Kid was awesome. But that's it. No one else of note. Joe Biden, Senator from Delaware from 1973-2009 and Vice President from 2009 to 2017 - he's not from Delaware, he's from Scranton. In case you're curious, that's not in Delaware. Following the retirement of Mills from the University of Delaware, the reference implementation is currently maintained as an open source project led by Harlan Stenn, who has submitted bug fixes and portability improvements to the NTP codebase since the 1980s. He's been allowed to focus on time because of the Network Time Foundation, which can be found at https://www.nwtime.org. What's next for NTP? For one, ratifying NTS. Network Time Security (NTS), draft RFC 7384, lets users or servers authenticate to the Network Time Protocol (NTP). This involves a key exchange over TLS that protects against man in the middle attacks, using standard PKI as well as a TLS handshake that then allows time synchronization via extension fields.

When Anson Williams comes to call, I’m newly inspired, informed, and fantastically entertained. My years-long mentor, time spent here 'splains why. Anson's all about moving forward, focusing on what we do have, not what we don't; finding the diamond in the rough on the table in front of us and mining it for all it's worth. Throughout the BROADcast, Anson demonstrates through his life experiences, the essence of why I created this show... how to successfully merge creativity and commerce... which, still eludes me. Dammit. But, I'm blessed to have Anson in my corner, helping to steer my ship. A listen here as he guides me through my current travails I trust will inform others, pray tell, you, too. Iffin' you don't need such things, if you're already banking coin, stay for the stories. The legislators agreed that the quality and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine materials should be ensured with improved regulations.Legislator Jia Chunmei said during the discussion that bad materials lead to ineffective treatments, and cause people to mistrust Traditional Chinese Medicine.Legislators applauded the draft as it stresses enhanced supervision over farms producing Chinese medicine materials, adding that growth hormones used for herb cultivation should be brought under control.Legislator Zhang Boli said the overuse of growth hormones will sacrifice quality for quantity.Meanwhile, legislators urged specific rules that clarify the civil and criminal responsibilities of those who violate the Traditional Chinese Medicine law. Focusing on the worst offenders, Facebook will partner with outside fact-checkers and news organizations to sort honest news reports from made-up stories that play on people&`&s passions and preconceived notions.Facebook will make it easier for users to report fake news, in only two steps when they see it. If enough people report a story as fake, Facebook will pass it to third-party fact-checking organizations that are part of the nonprofit Poynter Institute&`&s International Fact-Checking Network.Five fact-checking and news organizations are working with Facebook on this, including ABC News and The Associated Press, and the group is likely to expand.Stories that failed the fact check won&`&t be removed from Facebook, but they&`&ll be publicly flagged as "disputed", which will force them to appear lower down in people&`&s news feeds. Users will be able to click on a link to learn why that is. And if people decide they want to share the story with friends anyway, they can, but they&`&ll get another warning. This is Special English.German officials are stepping up their criticism of Facebook, saying the social network is doing too little to stop hate speech and could face stiff fines unless it deletes illegal content faster. In an interview published recently, Justice Minister Heiko Maas said his ministry was checking whether it would be possible to make social networking sites legally liable for illegal posts.Maas told media that if other measures fail to work, they have to think about fines in the end, and that would be a strong incentive to act quickly.Germany has seen a sharp increase in vitriolic posts on social media in recent years amid a heated public debate over the influx of more than a million migrants since the start of 2015.The country has laws against speech deemed to be racist, defamatory or inciting violence, a response to Germany&`&s Nazi legacy. But authorities have struggled with the deluge of often anonymous postings on foreign-owned websites.Facebook, based in California in the United States, says it takes the issue seriously and has hundreds of contractors reviewing posts at a Berlin office. The mechanism means that low-dose aspirin, or "baby aspirin", may have some benefits in helping cancer prevention, especially colon cancer, in addition to protection against cardiovascular disease. The researchers from Oregon State University say the benefit of aspirin may be due to its effect on blood cells called platelets, rather than acting directly on tumor cells.Early cancer cells live in what&`&s actually a pretty hostile environment, where the immune system regularly attacks and attempts to eliminate them. Platelets can play a protective role for those early cancer cells. Inhibition with aspirin appears to interfere with that process. For the first time, the study shows the ability of platelets to regulate cancer cells. The anti-cancer benefit of aspirin occurs at very low doses. Higher doses are used to treat inflammation, headaches or pain. The new findings have enabled doctors to use low doses of aspirin, to minimize the risk of inner bleeding. Inner bleeding is a serious concern with any anti-platelet medication. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.
