Hey folks, Alex here (yes, real me, not my AI avatar, yet)Compared to previous weeks, this week was pretty "chill" in the world of AI, though we did get a pretty significant Gemini 2.5 Pro update, it basically beat itself on the Arena. With Mistral releasing a new medium model (not OSS) and Nvidia finally dropping Nemotron Ultra (both ignoring Qwen 3 performance) there was also a few open source updates. To me the highlight of this week was a breakthrough in AI Avatars, with Heygen's new IV model, Beating ByteDance's OmniHuman (our coverage) and Hedra labs, they've set an absolute SOTA benchmark for 1 photo to animated realistic avatar. Hell, Iet me record all this real quick and show you how good it is! How good is that?? I'm still kind of blown away. I have managed to get a free month promo code for you guys, look for it in the TL;DR section at the end of the newsletter. To celebrate the 100th episode of The Grant Williams Podcast, I'm delighted to welcome my friend Lynne Bryan Phipps for a discussion unlike any of the 99 that preceded it as she and I take a personal journey into the incredible world of Integrative Equine Therapy (IET). Lynne – an ordained minister, architect and psychologist and the founder of one of Rhode Island's leading charter schools – also founded Beachwood Centre, an extraordinary place where Lynne and her staff provide help for those suffering from trauma, anxiety, PTSD, grief and other stress-related issues, with the aid of horses. My own personal experience working with Lynne opened my eyes to something remarkable and, in this conversation, we talk about the remarkable work being done at Beachwood, the extraordinary data collected by Brown University, demonstrating the incredible healing power of IET and how (and why) horses are a transformational factor when it comes to this kind of work. This is a conversation you won't forget. At the end of the conversation you'll find ways in which you can help Lynne continue the important work being done at Beachwood. So, if you've enjoyed my work, and you're in a position to make a contribution – no matter how small – please consider donating to this wonderful cause. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com.  Copper Tier subscribers get access to all podcasts, while members of the Silver Tier get both the podcasts and my monthly newsletter, Things That Make You Go Hmmm… Gold Tier subscribers have access to my new series of in-depth video conversations, About Time.

Sv.

Nav te neviena, kas to novērtētu. Uzsaukt: Bom Caminho! Un ja nu man apniks? Sauksim to par Tezē, jo tur es to piedzīvoju pirmoreiz.

Un es to gribēju.

Cauri laikiem. Tikai toreiz tas sākās ar bērnu raidījumiem. Šogad man bija viena no brīnišķīgākajām raidījumu pieturām – tā bija Subatē, kur atgriezos pēc 30 gadiem, bet sastapu tos pašus cilvēkus, ko biju intervējusi toreiz, kad viņi bija mazi bērni… Piemēram, viena meitene dziedāja to labi zināmo dziesmiņu Šuju lellei jaku.

Virtual engineering is a process by which engineers can combine the world around them with a digitally-generated environment, allowing them to visualize an object or location from a totally new perspective. Credit Advanced VR Research Centre (AVRRC), Loughborough University   While the fundamentals of virtual technology and simulation have been around for some time, particularly in first-person computer games, the application of this technology in the engineering setting is less familiar to most.  Yet virtual and immersive simulations have, and are, revolutionising the engineering industry.   Virtual engineering systems are allowing engineers to evaluate product design and customer requirements without the need for hardware or prototype samples and are becoming increasingly common in the automotive and aerospace sectors. These data-driven simulations enable designers to accurately determine how best to integrate new components into a vehicle before fabricating and testing them, ensuring more efficient and effective products while reducing costs and improving safety.   These virtual processes are however only as good as the digital and mathematical tools and algorithms that drive them, and the design and calibration of these tools requires expert knowledge from across a wide array of engineering subjects.  Credit Advanced VR Research Centre (AVRRC), Loughborough University   Helen's guest is Professor Roy Kalawsky, Royal Academy of Engineering and Airbus Research Chair in Digital and Data Engineering Information Systems at Loughborough University.  In addition, Roy is also the Director of the Advanced VR Research Centre and a Fellow of the IET and RSA.   Roy is a pioneer of virtual engineering and has lead the development of numerous VR and AR systems, having established the UK's first VR lab during the early 1980s.  As well as working for BAE Sysems in his early career, he has been involved in highly classified projects for NASA, the US Navy, McDonnell Douglas, Dassault Aviation, the MOD and many others. His research experience spans the fields of next generation modelling, simulation and visualization and he has undertaken work in the development of digital-twins, co-simulation and machine learning. Whilst his primary research focus is in the aerospace sector, he has achieved important developments in healthcare and other sectors.   Useful Links: Loughborough University Advanced VR Research Centre (AVRRC) Virtual Reality in Engineering Blog     We would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this episode. If you would like to get in touch, email us at podcast@imeche.org You can find more information about the work of the IMechE at www.imeche.org

Stāsta ilggadējā Latvijas Televīzijas redaktore un žurnāliste Sarmīte Plūme Tas bija 1987. gada rudenī. Man piezvanīja rakstniece Marina Kosteņecka. Es tajā strādāju četrus gadus – no 1984. līdz 1988. gadam.

This episode features a conversation that explores the intersectionality of race, careers in engineering and joy. These are big topics on their own and become highly amplified and sometimes harmful, when one's self-identities and protected characteristics intertwine.  Today, we're going to approach them with care and mindful intention as these are themes that we don't often get to share in this way. My name is Beatrice Udeh and I am the guest host for this Black History Month episode of Impulse to Innovation.   Beatrice Udeh is Head of Diversity at the Arts Marketing Association (AMA). She is an award-winning creative specialist, a theatre producer, broadcaster & poet, and has held positions at both the BBC and Arts Council England. She has a degree in mechanical engineering and was a mechanical design engineer for Rolls Royce.   So, why am I hosting and not Dr Helen Meese? Well, Helen approached me as she was keen for the IMechE to celebrate Black History Month, but wanted to make sure that somebody with lived-experience and a professional EDI background was at the helm to hold the space for the panel. I'm no stranger to the IMechE or to the microphone. I'm a former broadcast journalist and radio producer. I'm a former Mechanical Design Engineer and was an IMechE member nigh on 25 years ago, chairing the Young Members Panel for Derby and Nottingham in the East Midlands. I am joined on the episode by some amazing people who are leaders in their technical and engineering fields including start-ups, geeks, policymakers and just plain, smart engineers. I'm excited to get to the pulse of what makes them rock and find out how they roll during BHM and beyond.   I wanted to share a few things as provocations for this discussion, here are some interesting stats by the Association of Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK): “Currently, around 30% of the U.K.'s engineering university graduates are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. However, these underrepresented groups account for only 9% of professional engineers. This is largely due to the barriers and challenges these groups face in recruitment, retention, and advancing professional development.” With my Diversity-lead hat on, three things stick out for me. One, there is the language - black and minority ethnic. Two, the stats (30% of University graduates vs 9% entering the sector) and three the business case for a thriving workforce: recruitment, retention and career advancement.   According to Engineering UK, Global Majority individuals in the UK engineering sector face several specific challenges. Research has been done to quantify this, with specific examples of inclusion of people and inclusivity written into processes and policies. Not being seen aka representation  Different types of bias such as the halo effect, or conformity bias and even attribution bias. All of these biases impact our behaviours and lead to discrimination even before reaching the workplace, let alone in the recruitment, onboarding and retention processes. The National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC), released a report this summer highlighting the importance of increasing representation in engineering and emphasising the need for a diverse and skilled workforce.  And with a reported 700,000 people contributing to the engineering economy and 'Statista Data' showing that there are 540,000 engineers working in the UK, what does this mean when we intersect this with Black-British history and Global Majority engineering futures?    This months guests are:   Swati Swati is a dedicated, award-winning Biomedical Engineer. Having moved from India  where she worked at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, she studied for her engineering degree before starting a new career as a Clinical Technologist at Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. With a passion for STEM education and Healthcare Swati has set up her own company and now provides a variety of leadership, technical and regulatory affairs courses for students at universities and healthcare related solutions to hospitals and healthcare industries.   Dr Nike Folayan MBE is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the IET. She holds a PhD in Electronics Engineering with referenced international research publications and citations. She sits on a number of advisory boards for various governmental and non-governmental organisations including the Royal Academy of Engineering, Transport for London and  the University of Kent Industrial Panel. Nike is recognised as one of the top 100 most influential women in engineering and recieved her MBE for services to diversity in engineering in 2020. Nike is co-founder and chairperson of AFBE-UK, a UK-wide organisation that promotes higher achievement in Engineering particularly for underrepresented groups in engineering. She is presently Technical Director at WSP UK.   Shefali Sharma is an Aeronautics & Space Engineer and Co-Founder & Director of Oxford Dynamics. Seconded to India on behalf of the UK space industry & the Dept. for International Trade in her early career, Shefali has gone on to become a leading Entrepreneur in the space sector creating OxLABS and Oxford Dynamics in less than five years. With multiple honours to her name, she is now focusing on cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence research for the space industry.     Dr Bridget Ogwezi is an award winning doctoral research engineer and civil engineering graduate. She is Senior Strategic Project Manager for Ansys UK. Bridget is passionate about the process of discovery in particular, how to harness human innovation, technology and the materials we build with to make buildings healthier and less damaging to the planet.     Maira Bana is a chartered mechanical engineer with expertise in analysing and resolving cooling and airflow challenges in the data centre industry, through thermal simulation. She manages the CFD Team at RED Engineering Design. Maira is an active IMechE volunteer and Co-Chairs the Construction & Building Services Division, she is also a past Trustee of the Institution. The idea of service robots is no longer science fiction, indeed if the launch of the Optimus bot on the 14th October is anything to go by, for a cool $20,000 you will soon be able to have a human-looking robot in your home. Or not! At least not in the way that tesla imagines it, just yet. But the reality of service robots isn't totally out of our reach. Intelligent machines designed to perform useful tasks for humans are now rapidly transforming the world, by automating chores and providing assistance in a variety of settings.  Service robotics encompasses a broad field of applications, which have unique designs and different degrees of automation – from full tele-operation (remote human control) to being fully autonomous. These machines can be found in bustling restaurants to sterile hospital rooms and are blurring the distinction between human and machine capabilities.   Helen's guests on this episode are CEO of the National Robotarium, Stewart Miller and Professor Praminda Caleb-Solly.   Stewart comes from an aerospace background and he is a member of the IET. He took up the position of Chief Executive Officer at the National Robotarium in 2021 having previously been CTO of Innovate UK, in addition to previously working in senior roles at major firms including Leonardo and BAESystems. Stewart's aims are to grow the reputation of the National Robotarium to help create greater investment and talent attraction to both Scotland and the UK, fulfil national potential for the development of robotics manufacturing, and deliver a thriving robotics industry on the global stage. He is a member of the Scottish Government Industry Leadership Group for Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing, an advisory board member of the Smart Manufacturing Data Hub, and a non-executive director of the Satellite Application Catapult.   Praminda is Professor of Embodied Intelligence in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, where she leads the Cyber-physical Health and Assistive Robotics Technologies (CHART) research group. She holds a BEng in Electronic Systems Engineering, MSc in Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering and a PhD in Interactive Evolutionary Computation. With a research portfolio spanning 20 years, Praminda has collaborated with commercial and industrial partners from the UK and across the EU, focusing on person-centred approaches to develop creative design solutions. Her work has included designing and evaluating socially and physically assistive robotics and Internet of Things sensor-based intelligent technology as well as different ways in which these technologies can assist people and their carers, with age-related long-term conditions, in providing support for activities of daily living.

A theme has come up in sales calls that I thought we left in 2020. So today, Iet's address the outdated notion of trading money for design assets without considering the long-term value they bring to a brand.    Here's a hypothetical: say you're given one hundred brand photos and 20 social templates designed for you. What do you think the value of these photos and templates will be if they're mismanaged, neglected, or misinterpreted over time? They're probably not going to continue bringing you results if your rebrand isn't fully integrated and intentionally executed over time.    That's why it's flawed thinking to go into the investment of a rebrand with the mindset of "I'm paying X dollars for X amount of assets." The fact is, assets are only the beginning of the conversation. And approaching design with such a black and white view ultimately devalues the ROI that business owners actually can see from rebranding.    You're not just paying for the website. You're paying for the high ticket client that will pay twice as much as they would have if your business was stuck in word-of-mouth land. Suddenly, they trust you more because your website is validating their interest instead of detracting from it.    In this episode, we're chatting about:  The evolution of branding and design since 2020 Why many business owners are slashing their rebrand's value over time  The importance of brand maintenance  How to actually approach your rebrand to ensure the highest ROI

Her initial conventional therapy brought back painful memories and imposed pressure to use antidepressants, which did not resonate with her needs. Seeking alternative solutions, Kim turned to holistic practices like Reiki, meditation, crystals, and eventually life coaching. These elements played a pivotal role in helping her navigate past her traumas, eventually leading her to become a certified life coach and practitioner of various healing modalities, including sound healing and Reiki. The episode delves into how Kim's teaching career came to an abrupt end due to burnout, igniting an identity crisis that led her deeper into her healing journey. She discusses her engagement with therapy, which initially revolved around revisiting distressing memories and coping with labels given by her therapist. Kim found traditional therapy methods somewhat lacking, as they did not equip her with the necessary tools to manage her ongoing challenges effectively. The discussion transitions into how Kim embraced holistic practices. She describes her transformative experience at a holistic festival, which opened her doors to Reativity and other energy healing practices. The impacts of these practices were profound, providing her relief and insights that traditional methods had failed to deliver. Additionally, Kim compares her experiences with therapy and life coaching, emphasizing how life coaching offered more direct approaches to managing present challenges without dwelling excessively on past experiences. 158. Molten Salt Reactor Technology Solves Several Nuclear Industry Problems

The POWER Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2024 37:44

Today, molten salt reactors (MSRs) are experiencing a resurgence of interest worldwide, with numerous companies and research institutions actively developing various designs. MSRs offer several potential advantages, including enhanced safety, reduced waste generation, and the ability to utilize thorium as a fuel source, as previously mentioned. “There are several molten salt reactor companies that are in the process of cutting deals and getting MOIs [memorandums of intent] with foreign countries,” Mike Conley, author of the book Earth Is a Nuclear Planet: The Environmental Case for Nuclear Power, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Conley is a nuclear energy advocate and strong believer in MSR technology. He called MSRs “a far superior reactor technology” compared to light-water reactors (LWRs). The thorium fuel cycle is a key component in at least some MSR designs. The thorium fuel cycle is the path that thorium transmutes through from fertile source fuel to uranium fuel ready for fission. Thorium-232 (Th-232) absorbs a neutron, transmuting it into Th-233. Th-233 beta decays to protactinium-233 (Pa-233), and finally undergoes a second beta minus decay to become uranium-233 (U-233). This is the one way of turning natural and abundant Th-232 into something fissionable. Since U-233 is not naturally found but makes an ideal nuclear reactor fuel, it is a much sought-after fuel cycle. “The best way to do this is in a molten salt reactor, which is an incredible advance in reactor design. And the big thing is, whether you're fueling a molten salt reactor with uranium or thorium or plutonium or whatever, it's a far superior reactor technology. It absolutely cannot melt down under any circumstances whatsoever period,” said Conley. Conley suggested that most of the concern people have about nuclear power revolves around the spread of radioactive material. Specifically, no matter how unlikely it is, if an accident occurred and contamination went airborne, the fact that it could spread beyond the plant boundary is worrisome to many people who oppose nuclear power. “The nice thing about a molten salt reactor is: if a molten salt reactor just goes belly up and breaks or gets destroyed or gets sabotaged, you'll have a messed-up reactor room with a pancake of rock salt on the floor, but not a cloud of radioactive steam that's going to go 100 miles downwind,” Conley explained. And the price for an MSR could be much more attractive than the cost of currently available GW-scale LWR units. “The ThorCon company is predicting that they will be able to build for $1 a watt,” said Conley. “That's one-fourteenth of what Vogtle was,” he added, referring to Southern Company's nuclear expansion project in Georgia, which includes two Westinghouse AP1000 units. Of course, projections do not always align with reality, so MSR pilot projects will be keenly watched to validate claims. There is progress being made on MSR projects. For example, in February 2022, TerraPower and Southern Company announced an agreement to design, construct, and operate the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE)—the world's first critical fast-spectrum salt reactor—at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Since then, Southern Company reported successfully commencing pumped-salt operations in the Integrated Effects Test (IET), signifying a major achievement for the project. The IET is a non-nuclear, externally heated, 1-MW multiloop system, located at TerraPower's laboratory in Everett, Washington. “The IET will inform the design, licensing, and operation of an approximately 180-MW MCFR [Molten Chloride Fast Reactor] demonstration planned for the early 2030s timeframe,” Southern Company said.

Tisha is back off of her vacation so the gang is in full form! To celebrate the 50th birthday of Hip Hop, the trio discusses their favorite eras of the music genre. There was a big time riverboat fight in Alabama that everyone is discussing. Is the “ball cap toss” a universal sign of distress? What is your worst (non-casualty related) fear on a Navy Vessel? Damon asks everyone what's the thing that they sacrifice as they strive to be good leaders. Damo discusses his experience after reaching out to a Facebook group for Electrician's Mates. Barracks room inspections are pretty interesting, especially when you find plastic bags over smoke detectors. Tisha catches the guys up on what she's been doing on her break. She also talks about her next moves as she's officially entering the world as a retired military veteran. A few of last week's topics are revisited to include IET vs. duty section watches, southern cooking, and Damo's statement about Chief Petty Officers being “middle management.” Is leadership a “role” or a “mindset”? Big salute to Admiral Lisa Franchetti on her selection as our new Chief of Naval Operations! “The Brandon Act” and the importance of having conversations regarding mental health is discussed. President Biden signed historic order moving prosecution of military sexual assault outside chain of command. With all these Unions being formed, what do we think about military unions? What in the world is going on in Fort Cavazos… now? Damo reviews the “Shellback” application that can be found in the Navy App Locker. Do Better: Damo - Not leveraging his Sailor's work lists to do favors for fellow Chiefs. Tisha - TMO not understanding the “moving” assignment. Damon - People blindsiding him by tasking his people without reaching out to him first. Was Damo wrong for how he handled a situation with a Sailor during his RA duty? Damon asks are we seeing an end to the CPO Season. PTSF introduces another term, “Gatekeeper.” What is a gatekeeper and why gatekeepers can have a negative impact on their division. Should we be letting our people try to “work us out of our jobs?” These topics and more are covered in this episode. In today's episode, Iet's go out on a limb and strategize how CrossFit can reach 30 million athletes by 2030. In order to do so, we look at CrossFit's current standing, the way it interacts with its affiliates, and its marketing strategies. Above all, let's make the case that a singular app could be the solution to the impediments CrossFit faces and how it could revolutionize the experience for new entrants. If you agree that CrossFit works, then we need to clear the fragmented landscape of current CrossFit and fitness apps and allow CrossFit HQ to message the potential consumer directly, and to help the affiliates and membersship communicate more effectively and grow. Big vision, big goals, big successes. As we wrap up, we invite you the listener, to join this discussion about CrossFit's future. What do you think is the best command coin?Have you ever wondered what's it's like to stand Resident Advisor (RA) watch in the barracks? What does it mean to let “power go to your head” in an organization as structured as the Navy? The term “micromanagement” is discussed. An update on a NAVADMIN that was released and discussed last week. Damo shares his “profound” story. How's life treating you on that Aircraft Carrier? “Day After Duty” is discussed. Do you prefer “IET” or the normal duty section? Is the era of remote work coming to an end? Who cooks better - People from up north or people from the south? This initiates an age old conversation about who makes the best burger. Two US Navy Sailors were arrested for allegedly spying for China. Is battlestations supposed to be a secret? Damon discusses the woes of aging and trying to stay fit. Do Better: Taking leave to get out of getting underway (Damon), dropping NAVADMINs and programs without much context (Damo). The guys get into a few non-Navy topics, including writing down your goals and most surprising tv or film moment. The government is being urged to support a campaign that hopes to tackle the £1.5bn engineering skills shortage by placing greater emphasis on how engineering can be taught in primary and secondary schools.Tonight, Kevin Burke education consultant, ex-Department of Education and author of the IET's new report Engineering Kids' Futures will head to a Parliamentary event at Westminster to remind MPs of the vital importance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects play in supporting the UK economy. It follows an open letter to the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson from Professor Danielle George last year that argued the key to delivering on the Government's ambitions and reinforcing the UK's position as a science and technology superpower relied on future generations of engineers. The engineering economy accounts for 26% of all UK employment and adds an estimated £645bn to the UK's annual economy (source: Royal Academy of Engineering November 2022). It is estimated there is a shortfall of over 173,000 workers in the STEM sector: an average of 10 unfilled roles per business in the UK. What is more, 49% of engineering businesses are experiencing difficulties in the skills available to them when trying to recruit (source: IET Skills Survey 2021).David Lakin, Head of Education at The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) believes the engineering skills shortage can only be filled if the UK generates an estimated 59,000 engineers annually. Lakin argues a simple solution to the problem is to “grow your own” workforce with an emphasis on the development of engineering and skills starting at the primary school level, feeding through into secondary education and beyond. It comes as new research from the IET has found just how important the school system is to finding the next generation of engineers with 59% of Dads and 53% of Mums relying solely on the school curriculum for teaching their children about engineering and technology with a further 61% saying they would struggle to explain to their children which careers require engineering and technology qualifications.Furthermore, 64% of parents admit it's been more than ten years since they learnt about engineering or technology so don't feel they are qualified to pass their knowledge on and 38% also don't think that the current school curriculum is adequately preparing their children for all available career options. In fact, 69% feel the curriculum doesn't teach real-life skills with engineering and technology (39%) topping the list of subjects that leaves their children least prepared for a career. 69% of parents say it's essential that primary school children are exposed to engineering and technology to spark interest from a young age with a quarter (24%) of parents saying there's not enough emphasis on Science, Maths and English.Worryingly, 60% of parents also believe schools don't do enough to encourage young girls to consider engineering and technology career options. The IET is now offering the Government some key recommendations to make sure potential scientists, engineers and technicians are not lost.
