In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with IFBB Bikini Pro Morgan Smith. This 23 year old bombshell started competing in 2018 and turned pro at her second national show! She has a bachelor’s in political science with future dreams of attending law school. Her daily activities include coaching a successful traveling softball team and working in the painting business with her boyfriend. Celeste and Morgan kick off the episode by discussing Morgan’s road to become an IFBB Pro. Her passion for bodybuilding started during her college experience and needing to find a community after leaving softball. Morgan missed the team dynamic and the mental challenges of playing a rigorous sport. Morgan believes bodybuilding can be a team effort but enforces that it does rely on constituent individual challenges. Morgan states she is competitive to a fault. She emphasizes that she wants to place well, not just get on a stage. She states that 110% is the bare minimum in this sport, and there is always something a competitor can do to improve. Morgan tells listeners to focus on personal growth instead of comparison to avoid burn out. Celeste and Morgan advice fellow competitors to enjoy their time in the NPC by recognizing the friendships and opportunities made in the community. Morgan reflects on a moment she was told, “You cannot succeed in this sport.” Reflecting on her competitive nature, she was mentally ready to prove them wrong by hiring a coach and buying home equipment. Her mindset as an IFBB Pro is now focused on complete intention in the gym. Morgan states she did not want to use the pandemic as an excuse and feels empowered to consistently improve herself during the pandemic. Morgan explains her emotional process of turning Pro and the doubt she had prior to her win. She was one week out from the show that awarded her a pro card, and she believed she would not get a high ranking after being in 3rd callouts the week prior. She is now self-coaching while in search for her next team and online coach that puts focus on attention to detail. Celeste and Morgan go all in with talking about social media pressure, learning to step back, and finding the right people to surround yourself with. Celeste believes the pressure to show up on social media is often due to personal judgement, trying to make a name of themselves, and fear of failing their friends. Morgan wraps up the episode by giving her best advice to new competitors and women aspired to reach the IFBB league. Morgan’s genuine demeanor and words of wisdom create an episode you do not want to miss! Morgan Michele Brown shares how the grief and anger following the sudden death of her mother in 2012, motivated a new curiosity about life and death, a desire to seek solutions and answers, and new ventures that now provide others with creative outlets for processing their own experiences with death and loss. Interview with Morgan Michele Brown Morgan Michele Brown is a writer, storyteller, photographer, and artist asking people to step into vulnerable spaces around connection, death, and the human experience. She’s been featured on KQED radio, the Women on the Road Podcast, and in Stories of Life-Changing Adventures on the Road and in the Wild, a book by She Explores. Her work has appeared in galleries and museums up and down the west coast of California including The California Academy of Sciences, The Museum of Art and History, and The Laundry. When she’s not making stuff she cares about, she’s probably covered in grease from working on her 1970 VW van, or is making photos with her medium format film camera. Either way, she thinks you should probably read her favorite book, William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. You can find more on Morgan Brown at https://www.morganmichelebrown.com/ or follow her on IG https://www.instagram.com/morganmichelebrown/ In this episode we talk about: Morgan describes the feeling of going from being “deep in the grieving” to being on a plane from Paris to China and experiencing a “light switch” that helped her understand “death is just a human experience” that we all experience at some point. “Up until that time, it was all about me. All about my grief. My sadness. the death of my mom. Instead of looking outward and seeing, ‘oh, every single person experiences and will experience this.’ “ – Morgan Brown on death How Morgan’s Creative Outlets Aided in the Grief and Healing Process With the support of a friend, Morgan encountered a desire to provide opportunity for people to conversations about death, thus was born one of many project “Death Dialogue.” The purpose of Death Dialogue was to provide a dedicated space to start talking about death and dying. Morgan also created “Conversations I Wish I had”, a pop-up phone booth where people have the opportunity to step inside a phone booth and have a conversation with someone they never got to have with someone who is no longer in their lives. Morgan shares her experience of How “Conversations I Wish I Had” evolved and the many places the infamous phone booth has since traveled to What inspired Morgan’s desire to create something that allowed people to have closure around the loss of someone or something in important Creating “A Different Kind of Mother’s Day”, what inspired this project and who it is intended help “Mother’s Day sucks. There are so many people are left out of this cookie cutter Hallmark narrative of mother’s day, so what do we do for them?” – Morgan on A Different Kind of Mother’s Day Morgan talks about how her own experience with death and anger sparked a genuine curiosity about connections, death, and dying. A curiosity that resulted in an ever evolving and humbling journey of creating outlets for others to feel heard, understood, and potentially experience closure around their personal experiences with death and grief. “I love therapy. I’ve been in it since my mom dies. I can’t imagine my life without it. . . But I can’t say therapy is for everyone. And so all of my projects are saying, ‘I love therapy and therapy i’s not the only way and what other ways can we process our grief and find closure and healing in this process.” – Morgan on processing grief Losing someone or something important to death or for any other reason is difficult and typically not something people choose to talk about. Morgan reminds us that despite the discomfort, death is a part of our human experience and it’s okay to talk about it and deal with it in whatever way makes most since for you. She reminds us that grief is very much an individual process and what “works for me may not work for you.” Morgan’s experience with death combined with her creativity and desire to help others in their personal grief and healing journeys, has resulted in several positive resources for someone who may struggling with their own grief. The relationship between personal growth and business growth. Traits that have contributed to the Paisley & Jade team’s success. Moments of celebration in Morgan and Perkins’ rental adventure. Quotes: “She pulled together an incredible business plan as if to reassure me before I made that leap.” - Perkins Morgan “We were smart enough to be successful but dumb enough to not really know what was coming at us.” - Morgan Montgomery “[Smaller rental companies buy] inventory because it's cheap, but not because it fits a particular style or aesthetic that they're grooming into a collection. And we suffered that same mistake.” - Morgan Montgomery "I think it's interesting when an outsider's point of view recommends something that you never thought of, but instantly clicks.” - Perkins Morgan “As our business evolved we evolved who we were working with and who was the best fit as we continued to learn and grow.” - Morgan Montgomery “Why it's worked is definitely a yin and yang dynamic...we are super, super different. But have a lot of respect for why we're different.” - Perkins Morgan “You have to make the right choices for you and for your team...and sometimes that requires being uncomfortable, which we're not necessarily good at.” - Morgan Montgomery For full show notes and resources, head to https://rwelephant.com/podcast/episode-2-paisley-and-jade

Our guest for this week's installment of The Long View podcast is Morgan Housel. Morgan is a partner at the Collaborative Fund, a venture capital firm that makes investments in firms that in its words are "at the intersection of for-profit and for-good." A former columnist at The Motley Fool and The Wall Street Journal, Morgan has become one of the most prolific and insightful writers on the investment decision-making process, as evidenced by his impressive body of work on the Collaborative Fund website's blog. Morgan joined us in this live recording of The Long View from the 31st annual Morningstar Investment Conference in Chicago. Our interview covered a lot of ground, from how Morgan found his way into the finance world, to the role he plays at Collaborative Fund, to a host of other personal and behavioral finance topics that draw on his work. Show Notes The accidental writer: Morgan's background and how he came to write about financial topics (0:55-3:04) "The ability to write a check is no longer a competitive advantage": What Collaborative Fund does, why Morgan was drawn to it, and the role content plays in its strategy (3:05-5:05) Authorial license: "It's really important to write what … you yourself would find interesting" (5:06-5:58) Transparency and impact: "We're looking for companies whose ability to do good is their competitive economic advantage" (5:59-8:21) Public vs. private investing: "If I made a Venn diagram of public and privates, the overlap is much greater than I ever thought it would be" (8:22-9:19) Theory vs. practice: How private-market "lock-ups" can make sense for individual investors but are still inappropriate for the vast majority (9:20-10:24) The future of public-private investing: "There's some liquidity in private markets but it’s not very efficient" (10:25-11:16) Be honest with yourself: Don't try to fight behavioral biases which can't be eliminated anyway; work around them (11:17-13:13) "That's what works for me": How Morgan reckons with his own behavioral biases (13:14-13:44) Financial advisors' job one? Don't allow events or emotions to interrupt compounding (13:45-15:52) History and psychology: "The most important intersection in investing" (15:53-18:24) Scarred, not complacent: Investors are still licking their wounds from the global financial crisis (18:25-20:12) You can't shake investors out of their experiences; it takes a new generation to come along (20-13-21:17) "There’s no other industry in the world where the rewards are as big as in finance": How big paydays can distract focus from everyday work (21:18-23:42) How fee arrangements can impact portfolio managers' risk and reward calculations (23:43-24:26) Avoiding confirmation bias and bringing in diverse perspectives: "Find someone who you admire their thought process in one aspect of thinking … but you disagree with them about something else" (24:27-26:10) A crank whose views Morgan respects--"Jake" on financial Twitter (@econompic) (26:11-26:45) "No one hires a luck manager": Morgan explains how investors tend to account for risk, but not luck, in their decisions (26:46-29:17) "Investing isn't the study of finance. Investing is the study of how people behave with money." Morgan explains why he doesn't read investing books (29:18-30:03) How people deal with uncertainty and opportunity: The importance of content aggregators and of ditching bad books (30:04-31:14) Perishable: Morgan's favorite non-investing book of the last few years is about how much things can change, on average, in everyday life (31:15-33:03) "You're not proven until you've survived a calamity": Why it’s so hard to distinguish skill from luck (33:04-35:16) Good advice (that Morgan doesn't follow himself): Carry a little bit of debt to hone your focus (35:17-36:56) "You have to pay the fee": How thinking of volatility as an ongoing price for the opportunity to grow capital can help investors put risk in the right context (36:57-38:56) Are investors giving up on investment skill? Yes, but that’s probably OK (38:57-40:41) The importance of financial planning: Telling clients the truth (i.e., that they're not on a path to a secure, comfortable retirement, not matter how much they want to believe otherwise) (40:42-43:09) On Jack Bogle: "The biggest undercover philanthropist of all time." (43:10-44:48) What matters is how well you behave: The psychology of investing (44:49-45:41) References The Collaborative Fund blog Morgan Housel’s collected works Morgan Housel, bio “You Played Yourself” by Morgan Housel (Apr. 24, 2019) “You Have to Live it to Believe It” by Morgan Housel (Apr. 9, 2019) “Useful and Overlooked Skills” by Morgan Housel (May 1, 2019) Jake (@econompic) and Econompic Patrick O’Shaughnessy, “The Investor’s Field Guide” Abnormal Returns “The Big Change: America Transforms Itself 1900-1950” by Frederick Lewis Allen Books recommended by Charlie Munger “Origins of Greed and Fear” by Morgan Housel (Jan. 31, 2019) George Soros “A Man in the Mirror” by William H. You may never have heard of Morgan DeBaun, but if you’re a black millennial you’ve probably heard of the brand she created: Blavity. Morgan and her co-founder have done an amazing job building a recognizable and influential brand in record time and she is Rosetta’s guest on this episode. You’ll hear her tell the Blavity story, describe how they came to be, and how they are leveraging their platform to build a brand that’s not only profitable, but also influential in the minds of those who follow it. It’s a great conversation between Rosetta and Morgan, on this episode of Happy Black Woman. It’s important to spend the time to build a brand that others will miss if it vanishes. For the entire first year that Blavity was in existence, Morgan DeBaun and her team were busy creating content and resources to make an impact on their following. They weren’t worried about making money or gaining influence, they just wanted to make an impact on those they were serving. Today Morgan says it was that focus that enabled the Blavity brand to stand out and be one that fans would miss if it were to go away. She says that’s the focus every entrepreneur should have and shares how she did it on this episode. Trust your gut and believe in yourself. That’s the best advice I can give. ~ Morgan DeBaun Every episode of Happy Black Woman includes Rosetta’s question to her guest about the best advice they could give someone who wants to build a brand or business of their own. On this episode, Morgan DeBaun says that her best advice is that upcoming entrepreneurs need to trust their gut and believe in themselves. There will be all kinds of reasons for why you can’t do what you want to do. It’s up to you to silence those voices and believe that you not only had the courage to envision what you’re doing but that you’ve also got what it takes to build it. It’s important to be yourself. That’s what creates the brand. ~ Morgan DeBaun It’s easy to think that you need to copy what other successful entrepreneurs are doing in order to be successful. While there is definitely something to be said for learning from those who have gone before you, it’s important to be who you really are. Morgan DeBaun says that YOU are the brand, so you can’t spend your time trying to be like somebody else. It’s YOU that will shape, influence, and maximize your brand so don’t shy away from being all-out you. Move fast. Keep going. That’s what provides the momentum you need to succeed. The Blavity team has done the impossible: They’ve built a nationally recognized brand for black millennials in just under 3 years. How did they do it? Morgan DeBaun, co-founder of Blavity says they didn’t take a lot of time before taking action. They were quick to make decisions and quick to take action on almost everything they did. That’s what enabled them to build momentum and keep it going until they reached the level of success that they couldn’t be ignored. Find out more of the details about Blavity and Morgan’s journey as an entrepreneur, on this episode of Happy Black Woman. Dead bodies - and their viewing - were liberally sprinkled through our time with Morgan Busse. Morgan is a writer of epic fantasy. She's recently branched out into Steampunk with the soon-to-be-released Tainted. The idea for Tainted? A discussion on necromancy! When we weren't discussing the history behind morgues and what rain did to Victorian-era graveyards (you won't want to miss the answer!), we had fun talking about tea. Though Morgan did admit that she'd like nothing more than to enjoy a Raktijino. Her path to becoming an author is actually a bit unique, and Morgan didn't always want to be a writer. You'll have to tune in to find out how she came to be an author! Her odd Google searches are truly odd, even for this crowd. You'll want to tune in for that. How Morgan writes with four kids and as a pastor's wife. If you have a crazy house, you'll want to hear how she deals with writing in that environment. This podcast is brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple. It has exploded in popularity in the last two years and now has more than $2.5B under management. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it’s all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams. Check out wealthfront.com/tim, take their risk assessment quiz, which only takes 2-5 minutes, and they’ll show you—for free–exactly the portfolio they’d put you in. If you want to just take their advice and do it yourself, you can. Well worth a few minutes to explore: wealthfront.com/tim. This podcast is also brought to you by 99Designs, the world's largest marketplace of graphic designers. I have used them for years to create some amazing designs. When your business needs a logo, website design, business card, or anything you can imagine, check out 99Designs. I used them to rapid prototype the cover for The 4-Hour Body, and I've also had them help with display advertising and illustrations. If you want a more personalized approach, I recommend their 1-on-1 service. You get original designs from designers around the world. The best part? You provide your feedback, and then you end up with a product that you're happy with or your money back. Click this link and get a free $99 upgrade. Give it a test run. Morgan Then is the Sarawakian half of the popular Australian electronic duo, Slumberjack. Since launching their career with a No. 1 track on Triple J's influential sister station, Unearthed, SLUMBERJACK have released four EPs—including their newest effort, Black & Blue—and over 10 singles. They've received 2 ARIA Gold Records (for their 2014 self-titled debut and their 2017 single, “Fracture”), while their second EP, Fracture, debuted at No. 1 on iTunes Australia's electronic chart. *Childhood* We talked about Morgan's childhood: what it was like growing up in our hometown of Kuching, Sarawak, and that moment where he was first determined to learn the piano. Something that he had to enter into an “agreement” with his dad on. *Moving to Perth, Australia* Morgan eventually moved to Perth, Australia where he triple majored in economics, finance and commerce. And at the time, he was even determined to become the best accountant there was! But he had amazing friends who lent him instruments - including a Taylor guitar! - and that kept the fire going. *Entering the Music World* Having spent time playing at weddings & music gigs, there came a point where Morgan graduated and he was faced with the choice of taking on a full-time graduate role, or pursuing the world of music. And we talked about: * How he ended up participating in the Limelight DJ Competition in 2012, when he didn't even know what DJing was about! * Meeting Fletcher & how they first got together to make music and form Slumberjack; and * What it means to have synesthesia & what the Slumberjack sound “tastes” like to Morgan. In addition, we talked about: * What it was like when Fracture came out & started going viral; * How Morgan first found & channeled his inner Freddie Mercury when performing on stage to crowds of up to 15,000. * Meeting real skulls kept in rucksacks when in Sarawak; * Getting a hand tapped tattoo; * What it was like meeting real Hollywood stardom aka Jason Day (Lifehouse) and collaborating with Corey Enemy (producer and songwriter for Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, will.i.am, David Guetta etc.); * How Slumberjack has been staying connecting with their fans during the COVID-19 season; * His biggest advice for those seeking to follow in their footsteps; and * Knowing when to quit Show notes: https://www.sothisismywhy.com/11 To chat further with past STIMY guests & be a part of the exclusive STIMY community, visit: https://www.facebook.com/groups/523851861591311
