On this episode of Club + Resort Talks, Senior Editor Phil Keren speaks with Eric Brey, one of the Directors at GGA Partners, about his firm's Club Members Perspective Report. GGA surveyed more than 3,500 club members throughout North America to find out what members value at their clubs. The report offers a lot of great information to help general managers understand what members like about their club and what aspects they feel could be improved. Phil and Club + Resort Business Editor-In-Chief Rob Thomas also discussed how Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich. kicked off a new master planning process for its golf course. With the club planning to celebrate its 50th anniversary in three years, leaders felt the time was right to do a full-scale upgrade of the course. Rob and Phil also highlighted the new 12-hole short course called The Clutch which opened at South Seas on Captiva Island along Florida's Gulf Coast, and a $25.4 million renovation at the historic Desert Horizons Country Club in Indian Wells, Calif.

Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Patrick Martinez, a mixed media visual artist from Los Angeles.About Artist Patrick Martinez:Patrick Martinez maintains a diverse practice that includes mixed media landscape paintings, neon sign pieces, cake paintings, and his Pee Chee series of appropriative works. The landscape paintings are abstractions composed of Los Angeles surface content; e.g. distressed stucco, spray paint, window security bars, vinyl signage, ceramic tile, neon sign elements, and other recognizable materials. These works serve to evoke place and socio-economic position, and further unearth sites of personal, civic and cultural loss.Patrick's neon sign works are fabricated to mirror street level commercial signage, but are remixed to present words and phrases drawn from literary and oratorical sources. His acrylic on panel Cake paintings memorialize leaders, activists, and thinkers, and the Pee Chee series documents the threats posed to black and brown youth by law enforcement.Patrick Martinez (b. 1980, Pasadena, CA) earned his BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in 2005. His work has been exhibited domestically and internationally in Los Angeles, Mexico City, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Miami, New York, Seoul, and the Netherlands, and at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian NMAAHC, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Buffalo AKG Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Vincent Price Art Museum, the Museum of Latin American Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the Rollins Art Museum, the California African American Museum, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and El Museo del Barrio, among others.Patrick's work resides in the permanent collections the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Broad Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), the Rubell Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the California African American Museum, the Autry Museum of the American West, the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Tucson Museum of Art, the Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, the University of North Dakota Permanent Collection, the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, the Crocker Art Museum, the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art at Chapman University, the Manetti-Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, the Rollins Museum of Art, and the Museum of Latin American Art, among others.Patrick was awarded a 2020 Rauschenberg Residency on Captiva Island, FL. In the fall of 2021 Patrick was the subject of a solo museum exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art entitled Look What You Created. In 2022, Patrick was awarded a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. This year, Patrick's suite of ten neon pieces purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art is on yearlong exhibition installed in the Kenneth C. Griffin Hall in the entrance of the Museum. In September 2023, Patrick opened a solo exhibition at the ICA San Francisco titled Ghost Land and in November of 2023 Patrick will exhibit in Desire, Knowledge, and Hope (with Smog) at The Broad Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Patrick will be the subject of an expansive solo exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary opening in April 2024. Solo Cleaning School
Best Of - Monday and Friday Mugs

Solo Cleaning School

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2023 30:13

I remember this season of life like it was yesterday. I was overwhelmed with cleaning work, cleaning all the time, and we had no money either! The business that was supposed to be my way out of the nine-to-five had turned into a nightmare. Yes, I loved serving people. Yes, I had flexibility to go later or move appointments around. But I was a slave to our house cleaning business. I was solo, and I was feeling SOooo LOW.Can you relate to this? Are you working endless hours in your house or office cleaning business with little to no hope for a way out? Are you feeling stuck? Do you want your time back? I did bad. I didn't just WANT it. I NEEDED to have time back with my family. And that made all the difference. Most solo cleaning companies believe the only way out is to delegate their cleaning through a team of employees or subcontractors. This is absolutely a path and it's a great one IF you do it right. However, I was wise enough to understand my numbers. I studied them, I tracked my times, evaluated my customers and their locations, and I realized something. There is another way! It's called the ISO Model for solo cleaners. Did you know that you can earn $50,000 profit cleaning less than 20 hours per week without any employees or subs? It's true and you CAN do it. I know because I've done it twice now in two different states. Our first solo house cleaning company in Upstate New York earned our family $60,000 profit on 2 days per week cleaning by myself. Our second house and office cleaning company earned us $70,000 profit cleaning 2 days per week by myself. I was solo for 16 years. The ISO Model works! Today, we're growing a team to clean professional, financial, and medical office spaces in the Indian Valley of PA through Carfagno Commercial Cleaning. This best-of episode is a flashback from the early days around 2011, right after my wife and I made the decision to optimize instead of scaling. It was an inflection point in our lives. I couldn't keep driving full-speed toward a cliff I couldn't see... overwhelm, overwork, injury, no money bankruptcy, you call it what you want. But that's where we were and the change we made, changed our lives.I really loved my Monday and Friday mugs that I had in my cabinet. Oh my goodness. It's sad to say now, but I don't have them anymore. One cracked and broke. It was the brown Friday mug with beige lettering. I think one of my kids did it. The beige Monday mug with brown lettering lasted until 2021. I was still using it on Monday mornings. But it cracked somehow and Teresa eventually persuaded me to part with it. It was very sad because I knew what those mugs represented. As you'll see in this best-of episode, these Monday and Friday mugs were only allowed out of the cabinet when I was home with my family on a Monday or a Friday. You see, it was always my dream to be home with my family. These mugs represented slice of that dream. It was amazing! That's what optimizing my solo cleaning business allowed me to do. But I'll tell you... I'm not too sad anymore about losing my Monday and Friday mugs. Today, I could celebrate all 7 days of the week. I have a Captiva Island mug and my wife has an Oasis Church mug now. These represent the two month-long family trips we took in February 2022 & 2023. I like these mugs way more than the Monday and Friday ones. We've earned the dream we once held of being home together as a family. I am so grateful looking back at where we were and now experiencing what we've already accomplished. But we're not done! We're heading toward another dream now! Check out this best-of episode and see if you can find some kind of a mug or anything that represents your dream and keep it in front of you like I did. This week we (SW Florida) took a direct hit from Hurricane Ian.  Let me say that it was the scariest day of my life. By formality I mean, White Tie, Black Tie, Black Tie invited or optional, Formal, Cocktail, Resort or Beach Casual, or Casual? In this episode Kristy and I will be explaining the differences in maximalist and minimalist black tie.  This topic is intriguing is because day in and day out couples steer away from Black Tie because they're concerned it will be too stuffy or over the top when in actuality it can be the exact opposite.KRISTY'S WORK, LIKE HER PERSONALITY, is at times difficult to pin down. Get out your tissues because this one is going to have tears rolling down your face.  In this ceremony planning episode,  Greg and I discuss honoring the long standing tradition of the father of the bride giving his daughter to the groom versus presenting her to him.  Once we discussed why or why not, Greg offered the actual script he did for his daughters weddings that were, oh my gosh, beyond heartfelt.  I was BALLING! Oh but it gets better.  Greg also wrote a song for their father daughter dance as a surprise.  You'll get to hear it at the end of the episode. You can swipe Gregs script and listen to the song here.  Absolutely let us know if you plan on incorporating either - we'd love to know!Greg Stielstra is a husband, father of three, author of two business books, behavioral scientist, marketing guy, Packers fan, songwriter, and Nashville's worst guitarist. He worked as a wedding reception DJ for 27 years and has personally entertained at 1200 wedding receptions. Hurricane Charley  took out the Peace River Sanctuary owned by Lisa Stoner.  I took a crew down to put her perimeter fence back up so that no wild animals would escape the property.  There was an AZA supplier that also went by the name of Peace River, and many of their animals did escape into the country side.   I went there first, not knowing there were two facilities with the same name.  One a breeding compound and the other a good sanctuary.  I was really glad, after seeing all of the animals running wild at the first place, that I was at the wrong location.   It had always been our plan to load our cats onto semis and leave town if we were in the path of a hurricane, and I previously had the trucks, trailers and contacts to do it, but on this trip I saw semi trucks up in trees and know our cats are safer at the sanctuary than they would be on the road.  It was also the first real test of our cage structure.  Lisa Stoner had emulated our cage design and those were the only cages left standing after Hurricane Charley.   Hurricane Charley was the third named storm, the second hurricane, and the second major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. Charley lasted from August 9 to August 15, and at its peak intensity it attained 150 mph winds, making it a strong Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. It made landfall in southwestern Florida at maximum strength, making it the strongest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992.   After moving slowly through the Caribbean Sea, Charley crossed Cuba on Friday, August 13 as a Category 3 hurricane, causing heavy damage and four deaths. That same day, it crossed over the Dry Tortugas, just 22 hours after Tropical Storm Bonnie had struck northwestern Florida. It was the first time in history that two tropical cyclones struck the same state in a 24-hour period.  At its peak intensity of 150 mph, Hurricane Charley struck Captiva Island, causing severe damage.   Charley, the strongest hurricane to hit southwest Florida since Hurricane Donna in 1960, then continued to produce severe damage as it made landfall on the peninsula near Port Charlotte. It continued to the north-northeast along the Peace River corridor, devastating Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Cleveland, Fort Ogden, Nocatee, Arcadia, Zolfo Springs, Sebring, and Wauchula. Zolfo Springs was isolated for nearly two days as masses of large trees, power poles, power lines, transformers, and debris filled the streets. Wauchula sustained gusts to 147 mph; buildings in the downtown areas caved onto Main Street. Ultimately, the storm passed through the central and eastern parts of the Orlando metropolitan area, still carrying winds gusting up to 106 mph.   The city of Winter Park, north of Orlando, also sustained considerable damage since its many old, large oak trees had not experienced high winds. Falling trees tore down power utilities and smashed cars, and their huge roots lifted underground water and sewer utilities. The storm slowed as it exited the state over New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet, just south of Daytona Beach. The storm was ultimately absorbed by a front in the Atlantic Ocean shortly after sunrise on August 15, near southeastern Massachusetts.   Damage in the state totaled to over $13 billion. Charley initially was expected to hit further north in Tampa, and caught many Floridians off-guard due to a sudden change in the storm's track as it approached the state. Throughout the United States, Charley caused 10 deaths and $15.4 billion in damage, making it the second costliest hurricane in United States history at the time.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. In Episode 120, expert Peter Zalewski of Condo Vultures® interviews Randy Thibaut - the founder and CEO of LSI Companies in Fort Myers in Southwest Florida - for the "Real Estate Players Profile" about the increasing number of investors from South Florida and the Northeast who are shopping for houses and developable land in the counties of Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties. In Segment 1, Thibaut discusses growing up in the farming business in Ohio, working in the construction industry in the Florida Keys and ultimately serving as a division president for a public homebuilder in Southwest Florida. In 2000, Thibaut launched his firm - Land Solutions Inc. - to focus on land brokerage with a specialization in entitlements. The firm has brokered more than $2 billion in land transactions in the last two decades. In Segment 2, Thibaut talks about the connection between Ohio and Southwest Florida that dates back to at least the 1970s when a Cleveland-based builder developed and marketed the South Seas Plantation resort on Captiva Island, just off the coast from Fort Myers. During the last decade, Thibaut said the pool of buyers has diversified beyond Midwesterners to include an increasing number of people from South Florida and the Northeast. This includes residents of Southwest Florida who were already commuting to work in South Florida even before the pandemic. In Segment 3, Thibaut shares his outlook for land deals, residential development and home sales in Southwest Florida as the pandemic enters a second year. They discuss the largely improvised performances, the themes that went into these recordings – covering everything from conceptual art and activism to politics and philosophical thought – as well as how the first songs were written in residency at Robert Rauschenberg’s studio on Captiva Island, Florida, but only after Michael was detained by the CIA for carrying sensitive communist propaganda. Combining text from these tracts, as well as from their Index 01, exhibited at Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972, Art & Language provided the lyrics that were sung or chanted by, among others, Michael Baldwin, Ian Burn, Kathryn Bigelow, Charles Harrison, Pauline Harrison, Sandra Harrison, Christine Kozlov, Lynn Lemaster, Philip Pilkington, Mel Ramsden and Mayo Thompson.
