Guest: Sergio Mittlaender (FGV Law School in São Paulo and Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy). In this podcast, we explore a fascinating study by Lisa Lenz and Sergio Mittlaender on the effects of intergroup contact on discrimination. Through economic experiments, the researchers investigate how structured interactions between individuals from opposing political groups—Democrats and Republicans—can reduce discrimination, further examining the conditions that are necessary for intergroup contact to be effective. Tune in to discover how this research sheds light on human behaviour and offers valuable insights for policymakers working to foster inclusion, integration, and the reduction of prejudice.

Welcome back to THE IAS COMPANION. Follow us on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@IASCompanion. Today's lecture will explore the intricate concepts of prejudice, intergroup conflict, and social integration—key elements in understanding the dynamics of social relationships, the roots of discrimination, and the ways we can build a more inclusive society. We will define prejudice, discuss its characteristics, and explore its harmful manifestations. Then, we'll examine the causes and consequences of intergroup conflict, identifying the factors that lead to clashes between groups. Finally, we'll focus on social integration, understanding its importance and the strategies necessary to create a cohesive and inclusive community. These topics are crucial for recognizing the challenges in intergroup relations and finding paths toward a more unified and equitable society. #UPSC #IASprep #civilserviceexam #IASexamination #IASaspirants #UPSCjourney #IASexam #civilservice #IASgoals #UPSC2024 #IAS2024 #civilservant #IAScoaching #aUPSCmotivation #IASmotivation #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAS #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity

Why do groups enter into conflict when a peaceful resolution could be reached? Dr Nafees Hamid interviews Dr Hannes Rusch about his work examining the ‘logic' of intergroup conflict. Dr Rusch talks us through the basic models which explain why groups might choose conflict, and highlights key questions that remain unanswered by the research. This research is being undertaken as part of a project called XCEPT, which is funded by UK International Development from the UK government; however, the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the UK government's official policies. XCEPT aims to understand the drivers of violent and peaceful behaviour in conflict-affected populations – and to find solutions that support peace. Find out more about XCEPT at xcept-research.org.

Steve R. – Sober 15 Years

AA Recovery Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2023 63:26

Steve first got sober in the early 80s. But five difficult and prolonged relapses over the next 25 years delayed his current sobriety date until July 2008. As bad things got after each relapse, Steve somehow managed to make it back to AA with plenty of reasons why he slipped. Unlike some alcoholics who stay out weeks or months before re-entering AA, Steve's intervals of daily drinking lasted for years. During those intervals, he somehow managed to keep his job, though his physical and mental health were steadily declining with every drink. Several stints of in-patient treatment restored him to sobriety and guided him to the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. But sporadic sponsorship, intermittent meetings, and insufficient Step work eventually gave way to whatever cravings and triggers led Steve back to drinking, often for years at-a-time. But it didn't kill him. By the time Steve picked up his 5th desire chip he'd been thoroughly beaten by the disease and willing to do whatever was necessary to stay sober. The sponsor who'd helped him after his 4th relapse was willing to take Steve back after his last re-entry into AA. Through a combination of willingness and compliance, Steve's ultimate surrender transported him to the center of the Program. He finally worked the steps, consistently prayed, studied the Big Book, attended regular meetings, and sponsored other recovering alcoholics. Steve has also volunteered at our local Intergroup every week for the past 15 years. For everything Steve lost in a quarter-decade of slipping, he never lost the belief that he could stay sober in AA. That he lived to survive his relapses is a miracle in itself. His story provides a unique kind of hope to others who have struggled or are now struggling with the desire to drink. So please enjoy the next hour with my long-time friend and AA brother, Steve R. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. Joseph O. grew up on Long Island, New York. He graduated college with degrees in Psychology & Economics, but he would say his real major was Independent Study in Drugs & Behavior. He made a geographic shift to Los Angeles to get away from his drinking companions & start fresh but still made no real investment in Recovery. In LA he maintained some abstinence over 10 months or so but picked up again when a girlfriend moved on. Very rapidly he lost his job, apartment, and car and found himself on Skid Row living in a Christian mission with 200 other bottom rung cases. Finally on February 29, 1996 he crawled up the steps of a Jewish rehab. He was blessed with a great sponsor that got him into the work quickly and made the process fun & understandable. He was very active in AA around LA. Three years ago He moved to Jerusalem to continue his studies to become a Rabbi. Joseph is a proud member of Spiritual Gangsters and a believer that Alcoholism is a condition he needs to tread even today. Joseph attends meetings daily, leads a Book Study twice weekly focusing on going line by line in order to understand & apply the authentic message as a lifestyle. Discussion Topic: How do I and my local fellowship cooperate with professionals? Do I share everything I need to share in order to get well? Have I shared each and every secret? Do I understand it is the vital difference between staying in my disease and getting well?   Do I dare to step out of the comfort zone of my home group and share about my disease and my recovery with the local professional community? If not, why not? If yes, do I keep within the well-proven principles of personal anonymity; attraction rather than promotion; giving for free and for fun?   Are my home group and Intergroup strong on service? Do we have a local SIP Committee? Do we try to involve newer members too or has the same in-crowd been doing this for years?   What can I and my home group improve on carrying the message of recovery after reading this article and the other articles in this edition? You may use this topic in a discussion meeting, or send a story of your own recovery journey to essay@sa.org

Welcome back to this fifth and final episode in the miniseries where we talk about the institutional prejudice experienced by many people carrying around a label of personality disorder. Like before, this episode was produced as a direct result of the recent, astonishingly discriminatory, personality disorder course description circulated by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. In this episode, I speak with Hollie, co-host of ‘The wrong kind of Mad' podcast, about her experiences of prejudice working as a person with a lived experience in and outside the NHS. At the end of the episode, I've put some ideas together about where we could go next to start to turn around this super tanker of injustice. Remember, these are just ideas, please feel free to get in touch with your own thoughts and feelings. In the meantime, please put aside the 10th of June, at 10am when I'm hoping we can all meet outside the Royal College of Psychiatrists, make a noise and begin the process of real and lasting change. Prosociality is everywhere around us. We share with others. We spend time with those who are grieving. We feel sorrow, joy, and pride for others even when it really means nothing for us. We teach others life skills when they could learn it the hard way, and hope for the best for those around us. Well, most of the time. In this second episode on schadenfreude and gluckschmerz , Edward Thomas explores their intersection with status, opposition, race, radicality, dehumanization, apathy, and research generalization--and why they might just be the cause of polarization and debates.Join Edward on this episode to learn more about how being a good person might just be the bad choice.Note!: Due to the school season, episodes of The Mystery of Your Mind will now be released on a monthly basis rather than a biweekly basis (subject to change--I try to get as many episodes out but I want to make sure my audio and edit quality gets better every episode which requires me to spend more time per episode).  Thank you for your patience, encouragement, and support! :) (In the meantime, check out some of my other episodes!
