Through art, film, fashion, collecting, and now music, Daphne Guinness has been a creative force and industry muse second to none. On this season finale of The Grand Tourist, Dan speaks with Guinness about her new album “Sleep,” what it was like collaborating with legendary producer Tony Visconti, the unconventional summers of her youth with Salvador Dalí, her memories of Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, her thoughts on AI and the future of creativity, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Heiress, fashion icon and musician Daphne Guinness joins the boys to discuss her latest album, her friendships with the late Alexander McQueen & Isabella Blow, and growing up in the South of Spain with neighbor and family friend Salvador Dali.
Daphne Guinness is a style icon and creative force. Heiress to the Guinness brewing dynasty, she transcends her lineage as a fashion muse, designer, and philanthropist. Renowned for her avant-garde fashion sense—and her extraordinary couture collection—Guinness seamlessly blends artistry and eccentricity, distinctly weaving past sartorial narratives into the contemporary. Her collaborations with designers like Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh have left an indelible mark on the fashion world. But beyond fashion, she is a musician, and writer with a flair for the dramatic and the unexpected. A self-described pessimistic optimist, Guinness is an enigmatic persona and a captivating perennial figure in both high society and artistic circles worldwide. Episode Highlights: Guinness says her formative years were a mixture of “art, stoicism, military thought, and surrealism.” She's interested in philosophy and the Stoics and calls herself happy to be an outcast. As a child, she lived in a monastery in Spain with no other than Salvador Dali as a neighbor— “he put me up to make some of my best pranks as a child.” On the pre-1999 era of Daphne Guinness, she says she was never a society wife, only a mother, hermetic. Her friendship with magazine editor Isabella Blow, her relative “in spirit,” exposed her to things and people most people would only ever dream of or see in a film. Guinness's otherworldly aura and fantastical upbringing seems perfectly normal from her perspective. She was mentored by David Bowie, who spotted her as a singer. She recently released “Hip Neck Spine,” which has a music video directed by the legendary Nick Knight. Philanthropic efforts are crucial to her; Guinness sponsors a CSM scholarship every year. She considers herself a pessimistic optimist, exhausted by putting her heart and soul into her art and music—she sees what's contemporary as pessimism, but she's “Team optimism.” She sees the beauty in human error and process, saying, “I like to do things the old-fashioned way.” Learn more about your ad choices. fWotD Episode 2474: Taxi Driver (Alexander McQueen collection) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 12 February 2024 is Taxi Driver (Alexander McQueen collection).Taxi Driver (Autumn/Winter 1993) is the second collection by British designer Alexander McQueen for his eponymous fashion house. It was named after the 1976 film Taxi Driver, and his father, who was a London taxicab driver. McQueen developed the collection following his 1992 graduation from the art school Central Saint Martins. At the time he was unemployed and seeking a job in the fashion industry; although he was reluctant to launch his own company, he worked on designs to pass the time. The collection included experimental techniques and silhouettes, most notably the bumster trouser, whose extremely low waist exposed the top of the intergluteal cleft. In lieu of a traditional fashion show, Taxi Driver was exhibited in a room at the Ritz Hotel during London Fashion Week in March 1993. McQueen was one of six young designers funded by the British Fashion Council that year. Aided by magazine editor Isabella Blow, who took it upon herself to promote McQueen, the collection garnered positive reviews. When the exhibition ended, McQueen packed the clothing into bin bags, went clubbing, and left the bags hidden in the rubbish behind the club. When he returned the next day, the rubbish had been removed. Nothing remains of the collection. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Monday, 12 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Taxi Driver (Alexander McQueen collection) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kajal Neural.

David Thomas is a world-renowned, well respected fashion stylist with over 30 years of experience in the fashion world. He is considered one of the original pioneers of celebrity styling and was recently included in The Hollywood Reporter's 2017 "5 of Hollywood's most in-demand men's stylists" list. In 1982 at the age of 16, David Thomas was living in his hometown of Gloucester, UK and dropped out of school at the advice of his career teacher. Upon that advice, David pursued a four-year plumbing apprenticeship. When he was a plumber, during his spare time David would devour glossy fashion magazines and newspaper gossip columns. Determined to fulfill his dreams, David left his plumbing job. Undaunted and unstoppable, in 1988 David applied for and received a grant from the Prince's Trust. To support himself, he worked weekends washing dishes in a café and evenings as a lavatory attendant in a West End nightclub while attempting to build his career by working as an assistant for free. That allowed him to get his foot in the right door. He began working as a freelance assistant to Isabella Blow and Ian R. Webb; eventually landing his dream job as an assistant to Judy Blame, stylist and jewelry designer.By 1990, David was himself styling. In 1991, at the age of 25, David became the youngest fashion editor in the world for British Esquire Magazine and subsequently at 26, the youngest fashion editor in the US as contributing fashion editor of Esquire Gentleman. During the time at Esquire, the magazine had a policy of ‘no models'. David developed an alternative approach to filling the fashion pages and promoting fashion by using musicians, actors, artists and writers. In addition, David later worked as contributing fashion editor at Vogue Homme, L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Hommes International and Interview as well as contributing to Vanity Fair and British GQ. Through the years of David's career, he has worked with various clients such as: Sting, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Liza Minelli, Angelina Jolie, The Spice Girls, David and Victoria Beckham, Dita Von Teese, Usher, P.Diddy, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Meghan Trainor, Mariah Carey, Lana Del Rey, Matthew McConaughey, Henry Golding, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Casey Affleck, James Franco, Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Lionel Richie, Calvin Harris, Harry Connick Jr, David Guetta, Barry Manilow and more. Kim and Luca celebrate the life and work of trailblazing designer Alexander McQueen. Fashion should be a form of escapism and not a form of imprisonmentFrom his formative days as an apprentice for Cornelius O'Callaghan on Savile Row, his pivotal meeting with Isabella Blow, spending unemployment benefits on fabrics to becoming Creative Director of Givenchy, McQueen's life was one of extremes, excesses, passion and emotion. We discuss some of his groundbreaking shows including the robots painting Shalom Harlowe in #13, his depictions of Scottish history in the Highland Rape and Widows of Culloden, his literary and historical influences, his Clothes as Armour approach to empowering women, his difficult relationship with the media and much more. Behind the story of the little boy who sneaked over to use his mother’s sewing machine is a man who has had a profound effect on famous fashion houses: from Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel to Ralph Lauren, Valentino to Gianni Versace.Making hats not just for his friends, like fashion lover Isabella Blow and designer Alexander McQueen, but also the Royal Family, plus all the clients he has across the world - some formal, others wild and wonderful - it is Philip who describes the hat as "not only an accessory, but a visual indicator."The secret of Philip Treacy’s success is not his connection to fame - although well deserved - it is his extraordinary talent. This is all currently displayed in a large-scale exhibition of his hats at the Erarta Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, which has people queuing round the block to see it. Isabella Blow got us wondering – who was Guy Laroche? And why was she drawn to West Texas to work for him? Well, spoiler alert… She just worked in one of his boutiques. Nevertheless, this week we take a look at Guy Laroche’s life and career. It turns out he had quite the knack for business, identifying early manufacturing trends and bringing in partners at crucial times throughout his brand’s history. He was also a keen designer who transitioned early into RTW. Listen in this week to learn more about his contributions to the fashion industry, including (gasp) culottes. Plus in Style Snacks we speculate on Saint Laurent’s confirmed absence from the runway and Gigi Hadid’s pregnancy. One of the most famous friendships in fashion history, Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow had an undeniable bond. From the moment Blow saw McQueen’s graduate collection, she knew he was destined to be the powerhouse designer we all view him as today. She used her connections to catapult him into the world of fashion elites and he never looked back. This week, we chronicle their complicated connection filled with incredible highs and desperate lows. Plus in Style Snacks, we discuss best friend Clare’s shocking departure from Givenchy. Is she going to a Meghan Markle collab? We sincerely hope not. Oh and “Revenge Buying” is a thing and it’s happening right now in China. “Eu realmente me preocupo com a independência de uma mulher. Não quero que ela pareça ingênua ou frágil. Philip Treacy is one of the most prolific and acclaimed hat designers working in the UK. His work was very much in evidence at this year's Royal Wedding and at Royal Ascot. Meghan Markle wore one of his designs for her first official public engagement as the Duchess of Sussex. Other notable clients include Madonna, Tina Turner, Grace Jones, who has showcased his creations on and off stage, and Lady Gaga, for whom he made a black telephone hat. Originally from Ahascragh, a small village in County Galway, Ireland, Philip learned to sew when he was six years old. He grew up opposite a church and he recalls how, as a young boy, he would go to all the weddings, uninvited, to look at the clothes and in particular the wedding dresses. He went on to study fashion at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, and then won a place on the MA fashion design course at the Royal College of Art in London, graduating in 1990 with first class honours. He enjoyed a meteoric rise to success when fashion stylist Isabella Blow saw his student hat collection. She introduced him to Karl Lagerfeld, who quickly invited him to design hats for Chanel Couture when he was still in his early twenties. He has won the title of British Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards on five occasions, and was awarded an honorary OBE for services to the British fashion industry in 2007. Presenter Kirsty Young Producer Sarah Taylor.
