Demon befriends us on this, his journey through the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Inspired by the unflinching truth-telling of David Copperfield, Kingsolver enlists Dickens' anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead gives voice to a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can't imagine leaving behind. We are in a mental health pandemic. Do you struggle with asking for help? How do you know what is the right type of helping resource for you? How do you overcome personal and systemic barriers to seeking mental health care? What characteristics do you look for in a therapist? In this episode, Dr. Diana Hill and Dr. Nicole Siegfried take the mystery and the stigma out of mental health care. Diana shares skills to practice the vulnerability of asking for help despite emotions that may come up.   About Dr. Nicole SiegfriedDr. Nicole Siegfried is the Chief Clinical Officer for Lightfully Behavioral Health. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has worked in mental health for over 20 years and has served in national leadership positions for the past 10 years. She is an international speaker and has published research, magazine articles, and book chapters in eating disorders, mental health, and suicide. Nicole believes that recovery is possible for all individuals with mental health disorders and that all individuals are capable and deserving of a life worth living. She brings with her a commitment to a training-focused, outcomes-driven clinical model and a passion for team culture and collaboration. Nicole lives in Birmingham, Alabama with her family. She loves reading, skiing, and traveling with her family. Key TakeawaysIsolating ourselves and avoiding our human emotions contributes to mental health suffering. Asking for help is a vulnerable process of communication. If you are struggling with symptoms that are interfering with living your life, it's time to seek outside help for the problems. Identifying the processes that keep you stuck and the processes that lead you to wellness are critical in mental health care. The relationship with your therapist is central to meeting your goals in therapy.  A therapist should convey warmth, be self-aware, understand power dynamics, and be up to date on research-backed care. Mental health care is not one size fits all.  Relevant Resources Mentionedhttps://drdianahill.com/extras/ (Download Your Daily Practice for Episode 9 Here) http://www.lightfully.com/ (Learn more about Lightfully Behavioral Health) https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-siegfried-3218b2184/ (Learn more about Dr. Nicole Siegfried) https://drdianahill.com/guest-post-be-in-the-present-with-process-based-therapy/ (Read Dr. Siegfried Guest Post on my blog) Research article:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7000132/ ( Examining Hope as a Transdiagnostic Mechanism of Change) Research article: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/282703349_Love_Yourself_as_a_Person_Doubt_Yourself_as_a_Therapist (Love yourself as a person, doubt yourself as a therapist?  ) Book Chapter: https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2017-19174-002 (How and why are some therapists better than others: Understanding therapist effects )by Wampold et al. Yes! We made it to 100! This podcast has been a labor of love for the last 3 years. I've had the immense pleasure to chat with some of the most accomplished yoga teachers, wellness experts, and spiritual teachers in the west so they can share their work and best-kept secrets with you. Some were genuinely excited to come on, others I had to slightly harass and I've reached out to many more who never even made it on. I want to take a moment to say thank you to all our guests so far, for giving freely their time, sharing their expertise, and being so open and generous with the process… For today's episode, we are celebrating, by first, doing a recap of the episodes that were the most listened to in the last 3 years. We'll also go over the episode that you guys voted for to enter our celebration giveaway and I want to underline a couple of episodes that I think were underrated but that were special to me and that should have made it to the top of the chart in my opinion.100TH EPISODE GIVEAWAYIf you voted for your favorite episode, thank you so much! Our randomly selected winner for our 100th episode giveaway is Flo Dupuy from the US. Congratulations!!!Our winner voted for Ep58 Restorative Yoga and the Importance of Slowing Down, with Judith Hanson Lasater. Their takeaway was “Some people's cholesterol levels dropped up to 50 points in one hour of yoga practice. Cholesterol is a measure of stress. The sequence is not the key part, it's more taking the weight of stress off. It is so powerful.”I want to say a huge thank you to all our sponsors for this giveaway. You are winning a 100$ gift card from Athleta, a yoga mat from Liform, an Eco Yoga Bolster and Acupressure Mat and Pillow set from Ajna WellBeing, a Roll Model Starter Kit, and a class pass for one of Jill Miller union-fit classes, one month on my membership, an eye pillow from Spritz wellness London, and the book Move, Connect, Play from Jason Nemer.TOP 5 MOST LISTENED EPISODESHere are our top 5 most listened-to episodes of the last 3 years!#25. Nat Kendall is a San Francisco-based Bhakti yoga teacher and musician who hosts weekly classes in the Bay Area, annual retreats and has produced numerous albums with different collaborators, most recently an acoustic collection called “My Friend."Raised in Bozeman, Montana, Nat learned guitar, keys and percussion instruments early on and attended the Musicians Institute of Los Angeles followed by the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He then moved to San Francisco at the age of 30, working as an audio producer and creative director for Pandora Internet Radio before he discovered the path of yoga and began his teaching journey with Rusty Wells and Janet Stone. This is a deeply personal conversation about truth, vulnerability, commitment to self love, and life as the ultimate practice of yogic philosophy. We talk about seeing our teachers as humans, not people who are perfected beings or enlightened masters. He openly shares insight into how his yoga practice helps him remain humble in partnership, the incredible gift of parents who always told him to 'Keep Going' no matter what project or hobby he was pursuing, and the long and winding path of how he navigated a 'Dark Night of the Soul' period in his twenties. We get plenty of laughs, though, as he recounts his time playing in punk and hip hop bands, a path that ultimately led him to using music as an expression of devotion rather than ego.You can hear the buzz of the fans in the heat of the evening, the clink of people setting down mugs of tea between sips. This audio brings you right into the main lodge of the Feathered Pipe Ranch—a place that perhaps you've been before or want to venture to in the future.Nat Kendall WebsiteSupport the show (https://featheredpipe.com/gratitude/)

Janet Stone (@janetstoneyoga) is a global yoga warrior, servant to the breath, and student of this heart journey. Janet’s studentship began at 17 under the meditation teachings of Prem Rawat. In 1996, she traveled to India, the birthplace of her grandfather, and became dedicated to the path of yoga. Janet blends the alchemy of her own practice with decades of study. She aspires not to teach but to allow the practice to emanate from her, letting awareness blend with movement and breath. Based in San Francisco, she leads immersions, retreats, workshops and more locally and internationally.   In this episode, you’ll hear from Janet on:  [09.20] Embracing her humanity. Rather than reaching for transcendence, she focuses on integrating yoga philosophy, and particularly, the qualities of kindness and compassion into her life by extending them towards her family, her community and the wider world.   [18.50] From Hollywood to motherhood. Janet charts the steps on her life’s path, from her career in the film industry and introduction to asana practice in India to her return to California, where she raised a family and set up a sangha.      [22.05] Learning lessons from death. How the experience of watching her father die provided the basis for Janet’s spiritual practice, forcing her to face her own mortality and come to terms with the passing of loved ones.   [33.59] The concept of enoughness. Critical of our constant need to do better and own more, Janet advises us to practice gratitude for what we have rather than fixating on what we feel is missing from our lives.   [46.20] The link between sustainability and yoga practice. Janet urges us to treat the earth as well as we treat our bodies, to act with care and compassion towards the environment and to avoid letting our greed for consumer goods destroy the planet’s resources.    Announcements:  Visit https://www.henryyoga.com/masterclass to get your free 60-minute hatha vinyasa masterclass Follow @henryyoga.app on Instagram  Visit www.warriorbridge.com/teachertraining to learn more about their upcoming teacher trainings Go to www.henrywins.com/vitamin to claim 10% off Future Kind Vitamins Check out https://henrywins.com/events/ to view all my upcoming workshops   Links from this episode:  The Ramayana by R. Welcome to a year of Life is a Festival! It has been 12 months and 40 conversations since I launched this project, and what a project it has become! In fact today’s episode opens with the announcement of some incredible news for the show: I have been asked to perform a live version of Life is a Festival for Spotify’s end of year parties in London and Stockholm next month. This exciting honor bubbled up as life’s treasures often do, thanks to the support and belief of you, my community. I will publish those interviews together as a special Holiday episode so keep you ears open for that. Today’s episode is perfect for an anniversary. If there’s one resounding theme of Life is a Festival, it is integration. Indeed, integrating festivals, psychedelics and even our regular yoga practice into our daily, sometimes prosaic, experience is the key to living life as a festival. As my mother used to say, only Hanuman the Monkey Man can leap from peak to peak. The rest of us must wander down into the deep valleys in order to ascend to lofty heights. But perhaps we might someday become like Hanuman, if we can only remember our true power. This is brief but mighty. I am interviewing my yoga teacher, Janet Stone. With her expertise in all aspects of the eight limbed path, Janet manages to pack a curriculum of knowledge into 40 minutes of casual conversation. Now in her 18th year at Yoga Tree in San Francisco, Janet teaches around the world including pretty much every yoga festival in the world from Bali Spirit to Wanderlust. On the podcast we talk about how to take yoga off the mat and assimilate asanas into our daily lives. We discuss the importance of humor and service, including Janet’s passionate dedication to the environment. Finally Janet tells the story of Hanuman, whose deep devotion to Sita and Rama gave him the power to leap all the way to the island of Sri Lanka. From Burning Man to the bake sale, Janet Stone teaches us to live life like a festival both on the mat and off it.

I'm honored to have Janet Stone, AKA Mama Stone, on the show this week. She's the one who helped to demystify chanting when before I used to be afraid of it and make fun of it. We sit down and chat about how motherhood and raising her daughters have influenced her yoga practice and her teaching, as well as how chanting is a gateway to opening within. We also talk about bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and how it calls for all of us to acknowledge all of our emotions, instead of suppressing them.Chanting in Sanskrit has a special vibrational quality with none of its previous associations you might have attached. Despite chanting to various deities, or calling forth for a certain energy, it is an invocation to draw inward and start over again, and again, and again--and it doesn't matter if you are a singer or not. For our 25th episode, I sat down with Janet Stone. Janet is a world renowned teacher and forever yoga student at heart. Her devotion to the practice and the study of yoga is palpable. She’s based in San Francisco and I discovered her work at the Yoga Journal Live event a couple years back. I loved her teachings right away and continued to follow her work online. She offers great programs for students that want to take the studies a little further than what we can cover in public classes. And that’s what we sat down to talk about today. As always, I really appreciate your support. So as you leave a review on iTunes or on your iPhone podcast app, you automatically enter a giveaway. Why are they in that order? Where do we start and where are we trying to go?To understand them a bit better can we unpack it and break it down limb by limb and discuss each of them? For teachers that might not feel comfortable teaching explicitly the yamas to their classes, how can they act in a way that embodies the yamas so they teach by example instead? What are the niyamas in contrast to the yamas? What’s missing to the physical practice if there’s no attention on the yamas and niyamas? In your opinion, can we say we practice yoga if we don’t practice physical movements? Or if we only practice physical movement? How do we want to practice? What kind of quality are we looking for with our body? Can you explain what prana is?What's the difference between pratyahara and the following limbs? How can people cultivate dharana? Can people hope to find samadhi? Janet Stone is a beloved yoga teacher and longtime faculty at the Esalen Institute. Janet grew up on a self-described “slightly crazy hippie farm” in Northern California, where she ate tofu, baled hay, and cleaned rabbit cages. As an adult she spent eleven inspiring years in film and TV production, then traveled the world, visiting New Zealand, Egypt, and then northern India, where she began her yoga journey. Janet lives in San Francisco and continues to travel the world, teaching and leading. Some of her favorite things, per her website, include "Tantric Shaivism (go, Hareesh), Egyptian Licorice Mint Tea, the search for the perfect whoopie-pie (found many times), the New Yorker, great stretchy jeans (no, not jeggings), tall boots, long boards, flip-flops, warm toes, KCRW, inner exploration, curiosity, carpooling, that spot under the tree in Golden Gate Park, sunsets from Bingin, Bali, bath time, story time, snack time, picnic time, anytime with my girls." She is an articulate and passionate speaker about yoga, life, humility, the concept of "enoughness," meditation, why Esalen works, and more.
