Born in the United States, Azby Brown is an architect and accomplished author of Japanese design and architecture who embarked on a transformative journey to Japan. He recalls his story in today's book, The Genius of Japanese Carpentry: Secrets of an Ancient Craft. In this episode, I go through his writings about a traditional pagoda construction at Yakushiji Temple in Nara, which took place throughout the 1980s. We learn about the guidance Azby received under master carpenter Tsunekazu Nishioka during that time, as well as the ancient knowledge, wisdom, and way of life that Nishioka practiced. The book also serves as a practical guide for learning the step-by-step process of assembling temple buildings using traditional Japanese methods. I especially enjoyed the book because it offers a rare and personal window into the life of a community of Japanese carpenters. The book also evoked a sense of somber reflection in me, as it conveyed the gradual disappearance of the invaluable craftsmanship embodied by Nishioka and his team.If you'd like to dive deeper into Azby Brown's work, have a look at some of his most popular books below:* The Very Small Home: Japanese Ideas for Living Well in Limited Space* Just Enough: Lessons in Living Green from Traditional Japan * Small Spaces: Stylish Ideas for Making More of Less in the Home * The Japanese Dream House: How Technology and Tradition Are Shaping New Home DesignPlease subscribe to the Local Japan Substack for free. Dr. Terri DNP, ACNP, APRN-BC is the founder of EVEXIAS Health Solutions and creator of the EvexiPEL method. She leads the EVEXIAS Medical Advisory Board, hand-selecting leading experts from around the globe to support the education and knowledge resources that provide the opportunity to experience a whole new way to practice medicine that is truly transformational for patients and practitioners. Dr. Terri is a board-certified nurse practitioner, nationally renowned speaker, author, and entrepreneur. She holds advanced certifications in Hormone Replacement Therapy, Preventive Wellness Medicine, and Functional Medicine. Dr. DeNeui earned her bachelor's degree in Nursing from Texas Woman's University, and achieved both her master's and doctorate degrees in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her career in medicine began as a hospitalist in emergency medicine, where she quickly realized that day in and day out, the focus was on disease management instead of disease prevention. She felt saddened and frustrated—she wanted to do more for patient care and for that, she had to know more. In this episode, Tee and Terri explore a number of issues addressed in Dr. Terri's new book, Hormone Havoc: Dispelling the Myths and Misconceptions about Hormones in Women and Men. When describing her hopes for her patients, Dr. DeNeui says, “At EVEXIAS, we believe in an integrated approach to wellness that includes not only education but evaluation of the individual patient as a whole rather than just a specific problem that he or she may present.” Connect with Dr. Terri  Website Book  Facebook  Instagram LinkedIn Book  __________________________________ Follow Therese "Tee" Forton-Barnes and The Green Living Gurus: Tee's Organics - Therese's Healthy Products for You and Your Home:  The Green Living Gurus Website  Instagram Youtube Facebook Healthy Living Group on Facebook Tip the podcaster! Oddly enough I make a sugar scrub with the same lemon & patchouli combo. No wonder I was drawn to her.Living from the land and in a net-zero house, opens your eyes and mind to so many other possibilities. The amount of research and focus that was put into carting a home that could do so much in mind blowing for me. Not only is there so little use of common things that harm Mother Earth, but the house actually gives back. Every time Andrea would tell me something more about her home, I get a boost of inspiration for what I see as my role on this Earth. As we all have a unique part to play in keeping our home safe and beautiful for all. Andrea connects with all things living in such a loving way, that is refreshing to see. Taking time to reflect on how you view others and interacting with them, is so important. So many time we go on auto pilot and disconnected from others and ourselves without even realizing. I feel that Andrea connects to others on a deeper level, even if you don't realize it at the time.Let's get well together!Host: Karla Turnerwww.KarlaTurner.caIG: @theansweriselephant & @karlaturner.wellnessadvocateFB: @The Answer is Elephant Podcast & @Karla Turner.Wellness Advocate Guest: AndreaSponsored By:

But the heaviness associated with choosing sustainable choices day in and day out stems from experiencing a trifecta of difficult emotions, too, including confusion, hopelessness, and anger. Are you looking for an easy step by step plan of action on how to contribute to living green as a conscious global citizen? How about starting this journey right in your backyard? Building A Better World In Your Backyard by Paul Wheaton and Shawn Klassen-Koop is a wonderful book about making a huge, positive, global difference from your own home! They have prioritized comfort over sacrifice while saving thousands of dollars as they explore dozens of solutions and their impacts on carbon footprint, petroleum footprint, toxic footprint, and other environmental issues. According to Paul and Shawn, if 20% of the population implemented half the solutions in their book, it would solve the biggest global problems. All without writing to politicians, joining protests, signing petitions, or being angry at the people causing the issues. Paul Wheaton is passionate about permaculture. He has made over 177 hours of video of a full Permaculture Design Course and Appropriate Technology Course, and permaculture playing cards. Before this, Paul created hundreds of podcasts, YouTube videos, and articles about permaculture. He has contributed 26,000 forum posts at Permies.com. And he has at least that many at his other site, CodeRanch.com. Paul used to be a software engineer before embarking on the permaculture journey. Join Paul Wheaton me on Tuesday, July 21, 10-11 A.M. Fleeing military conscription and a "landless" future in his native Denmark, Jens Jensen fell in love with the vast though fast-disappearing prairies around Chicago, his adopted home. He saw democracy embodied in these open spaces. His life-work became growing "American Gardens" with these American (today we call them NATIVE) plants, bringing nature into the burgeoning city, as a source of public good. Earthworms welcomes filmmaker Carey Lundin to talk about her story of legendary landscape designer and public parks advocate, Jens Jensen The Living Green. Jensen (1860-1951) incorporated native plants into sought-after landscape design in an era when gardens here had merely mimicked the formalities and plant types of Europe. He appreciated and popularlized the natural beauties of prairie even as Chicago's growth gobbled up its prairie outskirts. A free St. Louis screening of this film will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Missouri Prairie Foundation. Carol Davit, Executive Director of MPF, also talks with Earthworms, about this organization that conserves, studies and helps restore the biodiverse native grasslands that once covered central North America. Sponsored by Roeslein Alternative Energy, a company researching sustainable-energy use of prairie biomass, The Living Green will fill the outdoor Public Media Commons of the NineNetwork for Public Media on Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. Music: Big Piney Blues, performed by Brian Curran live at KDHX, December 2015. On this weeks garden podcast Peter Donegan and Brian Greene chat with Neil Crosson of Living Green. The largest grower of worms (17 million in total) on the island of Ireland, more importantly Neil is the maker of Irelands first organic compost (made with 80% worm casts and 20% peat). Together Peter and Neil chat everything from why (seriously why ?) start this as a business, to what happens when your sister thinks she’s doing you a favour and turns all of the lights off in the sheds – to the moments you cried and the moment when after almost 15 years perfecting this product you realised you had turned a corner. Far more than just the story of compost making, this episode of the garden podcast is not to be missed. The Sodshow garden podcast airs every live Friday at 3pm and can be found in iTunes and all good podcast stores from 4pm. This weeks show with thanks to the lovely folks at GIY International for helping us put this one together.

Last month, my wife and I traveled to Israel with , an organization that brings international on- and offline opinion leaders in health and nutrition on a weeklong personalized experience of the burgeoning wellness scene in Israel. I've already released two valuable lessons I learned on that Israel journey: "" and "". Today, you get to listen in as I interview one of the most amazing individuals I met on the Israel trip - a man named Alik Pelman. Alik completed his PhD in philosophy at the University of London and then took a break from academic life and went to learn how to grow food, becoming a professional organic farmer for two years. Alik then set up his own self-sufficient home in the small village of Clil, in Western Galilee. I had the pleasure of visiting him in his small hut, built almost entirely from local, natural materials. This is where he grows virtually all of his food, and spends most of his working hours doing farm chores, reading, writing and hosting curious visitors like me. In this show, you'll discover: -How to grow food on your roof... -How to use sheep's wool for insulation... -How to make walls out of completely edible corn flour porridge... -How to use natural oils to protect your floor and furniture... -How to build an efficient, composting toilet that uses no water... -How to easily rotate your garden crops for maximum yield... -How to grow and make your own bread, from seed to loaf... Resources from this episode: -... -... -My ... Do you have questions, comments or feedback about Alik, his life, his hut, and how to grown your own food? Leave your thoughts at !
