Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2024 4:49

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with political commentator Owen Jones to round up the week in news. Then she speaks with comedian Kate Willett! First, Emma runs through updates on the brutal assault on Emory students and faculty protesting genocide and cop-city by the Atlanta police, mass arrests of anti-war protesters on college campuses across the US, Israel's imminent invasion of Rafah, US troops' presence in Chad, Trump's legal woes, Net Neutrality, the climate crisis, and new anti-trans legislation out of Tennessee, before parsing through some rather telling comments from the ongoing Supreme Court case about Trump's potential immunity as President, with representation going as far as to make space for immunity over extra-judicial assassinations. Owen Jones then joins, as he and Emma reflect on the last seven months of constant scenes of devastation and genocide coming out of Gaza, and the mainstream media's heart-wrenching insistence on downplaying the horror, denying the deaths, and running cover for Israel's project of ethnic cleansing under the guise of victimhood. Expanding on this, Jones and Emma explore how the severe repression and propaganda from mainstream Western political institutions is seeing an en-masse public awakening to the genocide of Gaza, and the Western elites' violent commitment to controlling the discourse, with supposed “liberal democracies” from the US to the EU and UK defaming anti-zionist Jews and anti-semites and uplifting actual racists and Jew-haters as legitimate actors. After parsing through the absurdity of the media's insistence on ignoring the obvious rhetoric and policy that has shaped Israel's approach to this entire war, Owen steps back to look to the role of the UK in particular, with the Labor Party's step back from the coalition of Jeremy Corbin at the end of the last decade, and committing itself fully to Israel's agenda of dehumanization and hasbara. Wrapping up, Jones walks Emma through the performative cruelty of the UK's Tory government's ongoing illegal and immoral deportation scheme for asylum seekers. Kate Willet also joins, as she and Emma discuss the repression of left-wing beliefs in the supposedly “liberal” entertainment industry, and the growing trend of the industry's support for right-wing reactionary comics. Kate and the MR Team explore the attempt to present left-wing comedy as hyper-politicized and right-wing comedy as almost de-politicized, before wrapping up by touching on the difficulty of escaping the self-censorship pushed on women and lefties when it comes to speaking out about politics. And in the Fun Half: Emma previews new allegations about Kristi Noam's killer personality, watch Briahna Joy Gray refuse to back down from Rising Co-Host Robby Soave's fascist criticism of student protests, reflects on the greater failure of the US media amid this crackdown on free speech, and listen to Donald Trump attempt to frame these non-violent protests as worse than Charlottesville. Shawn Hannity's Blonde and blue-eyed guest waxes about the severity of the ongoing “illegal occupation” of Pal– I mean– of college campuses by students who pay tuition to be there, and the MR Crew discusses the media's reproduction of genocidal propaganda, plus, your calls and IMs! The world is witnessing an epochal shift, according to Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis: from the now-dead capitalism, to “technofeudalism”. In his latest book, the former Greek politician - who in 2015, at the height of the Greek debt crisis, was catapulted from academic obscurity to Minister of Finance - argues that insane sums of money that were supposed to re-float our economies in the wake of the financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic have ended up supercharging big tech's hold over every aspect of the economy. And capitalism's twin pillars - markets and profit - have been replaced with big tech's platforms and rents; while we, the “cloud serfs”, increase these companies' power with every online click and scroll. Today on Ways to Change the World, Yanis Varufakis tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy how the world is grappling with an entirely new economic system and therefore political power, and why Britain and the EU are “irrelevant” compared with the “fiefdoms” of US and Chinese tech firms. How does an economy emerge from recession? Historically, cities hard hit by deindustrialization have strived to attract big employers from elsewhere by offering incentives and tax breaks. But outside employers rarely invest in a place long term, and all too often skip town when the incentives run out. In some places, local governments have been experimenting with other strategies. In Preston, England, they're experimenting with investing public money in locally-owned businesses and cooperatives, and encouraging local “anchor” institutions to buy from, or train, local vendors. They're calling it the Preston model of community wealth building, and it's inspired by a model in another formerly industrialized city: Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Evergreen Cooperatives.  This week on The Laura Flanders Show, we take a look at a transatlantic experiment in cooperative community wealth building. For the full episode notes, the series the Story Behind the Story,  and more goto https://Patreon.com/theLFShow

We continue our conversation about the state of the UK informed somewhat by the outcome of #GE2019 where we have moved onward from the hung Parliament territory of the 2017 General Election to a government with a healthy majority. Our wide-ranging discussion started with our assessment of the 2019 election outcome, our opinions on the catastrophic situation the Labour Party now finds itself in, who might success Jeremy Corbin and what the way forward for Labour might be to become electable. We spent a little time picking over the entrails of the predictions we made for the election in episode 30 and looked ahead with further prediction for 2020.

Last night was debate night in the UK and it was pathetic. James and Toby dissect the “girly-man” tussle between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbin on ITV's “Tron” set, Nigel Farage's separate appearance on the BBC's Question Time and “minor Royal” Prince Andrew's PR nightmare turn with Emily Maitlis. Then it's off to the culture wars and real wars. We get reviews of Netflix's new WWII documentary... Source

Det snackas boomers, Generation X, Millennials och framförallt om en generation som inte minns tiden före datorer, mobiltelefoner och internet: Generation Z. 26 February 2018 – Perhaps this time we will be willing to finally talk about the elephant in the room, white men and guns. We will never be able to ask the right questions or find workable solutions until Americans acknowledge that white men are not only usually the shooters but purchase most of the guns, organize the gun shows, protest in favor of their gun-based religion, own the gun manufacturers and are the legislators. The problem is white men from top to bottom. Will begins the show talking about Jeremy Corbin and the Czech spy fiasco in the UK and then moves on into his main block on the subject of bulls*t. He ranges from the right-wing conspiracy theories about so-called “crisis actors” to left-wing nonsense that the “Russia stuff” is a smokescreen conceived by Hillary. I burn the barn down (lol) explaining why neoliberal economists are completely wrong when they say “deficits crowd out investment” or that deficits cause inflation. It’s amazing that they continue to push this unproven drivel to the detriment of the real overall economy. Next week I will cover the relationship between unemployment and inflation while Will will cover something genuinely compelling. Many carrots! – Arliss

We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Spring 2017 concludes with Prime Minister Theresa May winning the election, but losing a substantial amount of political power in her pitiful victory over Jeremy Corbin. The first week of Bill Cosby criminal trial concluded. The prosecution completed their argument, and there's speculation the former entertainment mogul may testify. Speaking of comedy, chaos reigned at the White House, as former FBI director Jamey Comey testified before the Senate. His workplace docuementation became key evidence. One of Gus's BFF's, Bill Maher, spent the week backpedalling and apologizing after he referenced himself as a "house nigga" while talking to Republican Senator Ben Sasse. Victims of Racism like Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, who's repeatedly been a guest on the white comic's late night show, have been voluntary character witnesses and insist Maher is not a Racist. Again spotlighting the attention to social media, Harvard University rescinded admission to at least a 12 students charged with posting racist commentary online. These Ivy League-bound White teens demonstrated supreme awareness of White Supremacy. Chi sono i populisti? Cosa vogliono?
