Are you in need of a blessing for something? Good health? Money? Shiduchim? Improving your marriage? Getting pregnant? Parenting children? or literally anything else?Rabbi Shimshon Chaim Nachmani promised blessings to those who learn his holy sefer, Zera Shimshon, consistently. This could be once a day, once a week, once a month, as long as it is on a consistent basis, you will see blessings in your life.Rabbi Nachmani is an 18th century Jewish Italian kabbalist who wrote mefarshim (commentary) on many of the holy texts. He has commentaries on the Torah parsha of the week, on Tehillim (Psalms), and on other holy books as well.Through learning Zera Shimson (translated as the seed of Shimshon), we begin to have increased menuhas hanefesh (calmness of the soul), emunah (faith in G-d), and bitachon (trust in G-d). Our day becomes more meaningful and spiritual. We are able to think more clearly. In this mesmerizing interview with Rebbetzin Esti Goodstein, principal of Shalsheles Bais Yaakov High School in Brooklyn, New York, we learn all about the Zera Shimshon, including the Zera Shimshon on parshat Pekudei about shabbos. Rebbetzin Esti is a graduate of Machon Bais Yaakov Intensive Seminary, and has been in the field of education for several years. She has a Masters' Degree in Psychology from Columbia University. She has also taught in Prospect Park High School, Machon Bais Yaakov High School, Orot Sarah High School, Touro University, Gamla College, and Manhattan High School for Girls.Rebbetzin Esti emphasizes that tests (nissayanos) happen in life. Sometimes we go through something that is very hard for us, but there is always hope for salvation and growth, especially if we learn Torah through Zera Shimshon. Becoming Modigliani (Rake Press, 2024) is a comprehensive biography that delves into the troubled life of the Jewish-Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.; Written by Dr. Henri Colt, an internationally recognized lung specialist, the book examines the artist's legend and Modigliani's creative journey from a medical perspective, from his birth in Livorno, Italy, to his tragic death in a paupers' hospital in Paris at the age of thirty-five, presumably from tuberculous meningitis. Becoming Modigliani sheds light on the young man's chronic illnesses, addictions, and relationships with friends and lovers as he navigated the vibrant yet challenging world of early twentieth-century Bohemian Paris. Beginning with "Modi's" birth in 1884, the narrative is divided into five parts, seamlessly blending biographical elements with medical insights and a critical analysis of Modigliani's work among some of the greatest artists of the time. It also provides thoughtful descriptions of a changing society governed by the impact of infectious diseases, war, and a flourishing of other creative geniuses such as Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Guillaume Apollinaire. With thirty-seven virtually standalone chapters, a preface and epilogue, three appendices, and a rich array of illustrations and references, this biography promises a profound and compassionate exploration of Modigliani's embattled world. In Becoming Modigliani, Dr. Colt's aim is to foster empathy and greater understanding by unraveling the intricate layers of Modigliani's existence. The result is a captivating and deeply researched tale that will resonate with a diverse audience of serious readers, art and medical history enthusiasts, sociologists, and anyone interested in the human spirit. HelloWelcome to Life Points with Ronda, the podcast that helps you navigate life's challenges with practical wisdom and actionable advice. where we discuss important topics that affect our everyday lives. Today, I'm speaking to the collective and our topic for today is: "The Intriguing Controversy: Did William Shakespeare Plagiarize Amelia Bassano?"In the literary world, a handful of debates persist despite the passage of centuries, and one of the most fascinating among them is the authorship question surrounding the works of William Shakespeare. One particular theory that has been gaining traction in recent years suggests that a woman named Amelia Bassano (also known as Emilia Lanier), often overlooked in traditional literature history, may be the true author of some of Shakespeare's most renowned plays and sonnets. Here, we delve into this contentious topic, examining the evidence and arguments that have been presented.Amelia Bassano, a woman of Jewish-Italian descent and a known writer in the Elizabethan era, has now been placed at the center of this controversy. Bassano was one of the first women to publish a volume of poetry, "Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum," in 1611. While her work was largely disregarded for centuries, recent studies have illuminated her potential role in the creation of what are traditionally considered Shakespeare's works. The argument for Bassano as the real "Shakespeare" stems from several key pieces of evidence. Firstly, Bassano's documented life experiences and knowledge align more closely with the content of Shakespeare's works than the Bard's own known history. For example, Bassano was educated, multilingual, and was likely familiar with court life and Italy - experiences reflected in Shakespeare's plays.Secondly, there is the matter of Bassano's unique voice and themes that echo throughout Shakespeare's works. Bassano, who was raised in the household of Henry Carey, first Lord Hunsdon and Queen Elizabeth I's Lord Chamberlain, had access to a world few women of her time were privy to. Her poetry reflects an intimate knowledge of these settings and circumstances, knowledge that is mirrored in many of Shakespeare's plays. The most compelling argument for Bassano's authorship is the alignment of her personal circumstances and experiences with the themes in Shakespeare's plays. Bassano, a woman of Jewish heritage living in a Christian society, often infused her poetry with a sense of alienation and discrimination. These themes are pervasive in Shakespeare's works, most notably in "The Merchant of Venice."Despite these intriguing arguments, it's important to remember that the evidence remains largely circumstantial. There are no definitive documents or direct evidence linking Bassano to Shakespeare's plays. Scholars who argue for Bassano's authorship often rely on textual analysis and historical context, which, while compelling, don't provide irrefutable proof. The theory of Shakespeare's plagiarism or the proposition of Bassano as the 'true' author, therefore, needs to be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism. Yet, regardless of whether or not Bassano penned Shakespeare's works, recognizing her as an influential figure of the Elizabethan literary scene is long overdue. Her poetry, which so often tackled themes of gender and power dynamics, started conversations that are still relevant today. In conclusion, the debate around ShakespSupport the showhttps://chat.openai.com/g/g-8E47AuJfB-life-points-assistanthttps://FaceBook.com/Lifepointswithronda1https://youtube.com/@lifepointswithronda2968https://TikTok.com/@lifepointswithrondahttps://Instagram.com/@lifepointswithrondahttps://Patreon.com/@lifepointswithrondahttps://Lifepointswithronda.com

How do you sell a movie to Netflix, this episode will give you a bit of insight. We're getting deep into the weeds on Italian director and screenwriter, Ferdinando Cito Filomarino American cinema debut film, Beckett, which I absolutely enjoyed! Beckett stars the incomparable John David Washington and Swedish actress, Alicia Vikander. This action thriller follows an American tourist (Beckett) who had been in a tragic car accident in Greece and suddenly finds himself at the center of a dangerous political conspiracy and on the run for his life. He sets to reach the USA embassy to clear his name. Elements of romance and questions of political power are rolled up into a 90-minute manhunt. Beckett's world premiere was at the Aug 2021 74th Locarno Film Festival and is now distributed exclusively on Netflix.Filomarino talks about the cultural diversity on set - having seven languages spoken. I assume that would include, English, Italian, Greek, Swedish, etc. I was fascinated by the film's meticulously crafted visual elements and screenplay. Filomarino's work may be new to American screens, but he's gained notoriety in European cinema directing or writing on films like The Other Man, Academy award-winning 2017, coming-of-age romantic drama, Call Me by Your Name (Second Unit Director). The story sets in a 1980s rural Northern Italy --- romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old Jewish Italian, Elio, and a 24-year-old research assistant, Oliver, who's living with the family over the summer to help Elio's father, archaeology professor with his academic paperwork. Call Me By Your Name.Filomarino shadowed Call Me By Your Name's director, Luca Guadagnino while working the second unit on the film and forge a good professional relationship which led to a collaboration in 2010. He was fortunate to have Luca produce his directorial debut, Diarchy in 2010. Diarchy is a Locarno and Sundance Film Festival award-winning short film. Giano and Luc are traveling through the woods when a storm breaks, forcing them to take shelter in Luc's villa. Gradually and insidiously, a competition emerges between them, with terrible consequences. We also chatted about Richard Eyre's, The Other Man, fresh out of university, and how that experience prepared him for his own films. We know that experience is the best teacher, so I am always down for hearing knowledge bombs filmmakers learn from other filmmakers in this line of business. Sort of like an unofficial masterclass. Go watch Beckett! But first, enjoy my conversation with Ferdinando Cito Filomarino. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas discover the beauty of life, even during the darkest of times. We continue our WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?... HOLLYWOOD MOVIES arc – where we will be talking all things war movies and war adjacent movies – and we finally get to one of those war adjacent films with Roberto Benigni's LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (1997). Set during World War II, this fairy tale-like film tells the story of a Jewish-Italian waiter who meets the love of his life in a beautiful schoolteacher. The pair eventually settle down and have a child together. Just when their idyllic life is taking off, their world is turned upside down, when they are shipped off to a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. In order to keep his son safe from fear, the father pretends the whole experience is an intricate game with a special prize for the winner up for grabs. This Academy Award-winning feature is both joyous and utterly devastating. The film was not without controversy, but it is one of the best stories about sacrifice, family and the human experience during the worst of times you'll find in our war season. When related to Italian Jewish cuisine, the foods of Italy embark on a two-way journey. There are dishes that non-Jewish Italians taste without knowing anything about the Jewish origins of the recipes. And throughout history, Jewish people have ingeniously turned Italian dishes into kosher. They do that by the division method, following the Torah's strict laws and dividing dairy derivatives from meat in general, especially pork, rabbit, horse, camel, and others. But Jewish cooking is much more intricate than few rules. Read the full transcript www.flavorsandknowledge.com for more info Podcasts are available on Anchor FM, Spotify, or preferred platforms. On this episode of The Massimo Show, Rod sits down with Jon Gordon.  Jon is a husband, father, and author. His best-selling books and talks have inspired readers and audiences around the world. He's the author of The Energy Bus, The Carpenter, Training Camp, The Power of Positive Leadership, The Power of a Positive Team, and his latest The Coffee Bean. Jon believes in keeping his bio short because his past accomplishments, well, they're meaningless. What matters most is that he has something to say today that will inspire you to take action tomorrow.  Usually, Rod starts out the show by asking guests about their teenage years. But this time around he felt like he already knew a bit about Jon because Jon attended Rod's arch-rival high school!  Even though they don't share the love of the same high school they do both appreciate Long Island NY and lacrosse.  Jon grew up in Long Island, New York, and a Jewish Italian family, “a lot of food, a lot of guilt. A lot of wine, a lot of whining.” Jon tells Rod. Not only did he play lacrosse in Highschool but he went on to play at Cornell University. There he learned about the culture of teamwork and about being a leader in many ways.  Jon struggled and didn't know what I really wanted to do after college. He opened up a restaurant in Buckhead, went to work for a dot com, and even ran for city council! He was young - just 26 - but his opponents were seasoned and knew how to smear the other candidates. Jon didn't like the negativity and lies that came with the campaigning and decided that wasn't for him.  After these various upheavals, Jon's quest for purpose became a little more existential.  “What am I born to do? Why am I here?” Eventually, he decided on writing and speaking without much of a solid answer about what his topics would be. At the encouragement of his wife, Jon knew he needed to focus on positivity and he figured there were others out there who needed to as well.  “And so I started to research ways that I could be more positive,” Jon tells Rod.  “Start to practice those ideas, start to write about them, start to share them. The next thing you know, people are reading my newsletter. I'm getting an offer to do a book.”  That first book didn't do very well and Jon started feeling negative again. One day, while he was out for a walk the idea for The Energy Bus came to him. “I wrote that book in three and a half weeks. And that book would change my life because so many different NFL teams, NBA teams, corporations and nonprofits and hospitals and you name it started to read this book, and I started to get brought in to speak at these different events and that led to another 22 More books since.”  Listen in as Rod and Jon discuss the premise of The Energy Bus, the science behind being the best version of yourself, the true origin of negative thoughts, and how to get rid of them.

The story sets in a 1980s rural Northern Italy --- romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old Jewish Italian, Elio, and a 24-year-old research assistant, Oliver, who's living with the family over the summer to help Elio's father, archaeology professor with his academic paperwork.Filomarino shadowed Call Me By Your Name's director, Luca Guadagnino while working the second unit on the film and forge a good professional relationship which led to a collaboration in 2010.

Comeback Stories

Jon Gordon, best selling author and motivational speaker, shares his hard-won insights into happiness and fulfillment, and talks about the power of positivity in transforming your life. Learn how Jon escaped a life of misery and depression and turned his life around, by pursuing service instead of his ego and focusing on encouraging and inspiring one person at a time.  Jon grew up on Long Island New York in a Jewish-Italian family. It was not a very positive household overall and he often got into fights with other neighborhood kids. It often felt like he was battling for survival. He played lacrosse at Cornell University, where he learned about culture, leadership, and teamwork. He didn't originally plan on playing lacrosse but an instrumental high school coach convinced him to stick with it and showed him that coaches can change your life forever. Basketball was always Jon's favorite game, so the transition from lacrosse wasn't the worst. The real challenge was when Jon's wife almost left him when he was 31. He had experienced a rollercoaster of bouncing around between law school and a dot-com job and blamed her for the circumstances for his life. It wasn't until she said she was leaving that he started to question why he was so miserable. He was addicted to trying to prove himself and earning the validity of someone successful. The more he chased that idea, the more miserable he became. Jon started taking walks of gratitude, praying, and meditation, and those things helped him escape the rut he was in. We are all addicted to something, and it's not always the usual substances. Many people are addicted to their work, or their smartphone, or social media. Your past is a part of who you are and your soul has wounds that define you. For Jon, his biological father leaving was deeply impactful on him and shaped his attitude on life. A major life-changing moment for Jon was forgiving his biological father and letting go of the past. We all have wounds, and we all try to fill those wounds. Your wounds are your constraints and you can either heal them and rise above them or the wound can become infected. We are not strong enough on our own. That's why every addiction program includes a higher power. The most important first step in Jon's turn around from misery was in committing to serving others instead of just building up his ego. You become a person of significance when you make others significant. This became the foundation for Jon's future work writing books, speaking, and sending out his weekly newsletter. Ironically, the greatest self growth strategy of all is to help others grow. When you are focused on yourself, you don't grow very much but when you become a conduit for others, your growth rises to a whole other level. Jon wasn't successful right away. His first book was rejected by 30 publishers and not one book store in the US would carry the book. He decided to go on a 20-city tour that he paid for himself to promote the book and even when there were only five people in the crowd he knew his mission was to encourage and inspire as many people as possible, one person at a time. When Covid hit, Jon went back to the rookie mindset and continued to push his vision, even though his talks were being cancelled left and right. When he got started, selling five million books was never the goal. It all comes back to what your intention is, where your heart is, and what you focus on. Don't chase things to build up your ego. So many people struggle with feeling unworthy. People aren't afraid of success, they feel like they are unworthy of success. When we forget who we are, we forget the power we have inside us. Would you choose to have a negative thought? Ideas and thoughts emerge from your subconscious all the time and some of them will discourage, distract, and divide you. Recognize those thoughts as lies and speak truth to them. Greatness and potential are within you and once you start speaking that to yourself, you will start walking with power. The key is to unite the self. This can be done with meditation, prayer, and mindfulness. Success is doing what you love and loving how you do it. Success doesn't have to be tied to your performance, that's the mistake that many athletes and professionals make. The fear of underperforming will drain you. Perform for an audience of one. The narrative of the universe is a battle of good versus evil. We are spiritual beings on a human journey and we each experience this epic struggle in our lives every day. We can always change our story. As a coach, you have to know the story someone tells themselves so that you can help them tell a better story. So often, our minds don't need fixing, it's our souls that need healing. No matter what is happening outside of us, it's always about what is happening on the inside. Talk to yourself, but don't always listen to yourself. Write down all the negative thoughts that come into your mind and then flip the paper over and write down words of encouragement. Make refuting your negative thoughts into a daily practice. Take small action steps each day to feed your positivity and at the end of the day think about what went right. What you look for you will find.   Mentioned in this Episode: jongordon.com

Rachel also talks to Italian travel writer, the absolutely delightful Susan Van Allen about an overly dramatic Rabbi who caused an artichoke controversy that rocked the Jewish/Italian food world only a few months ago. Bonus: hear Susan's beautiful pronunciation of "carciofi alla giudia!" Support your favorite neighborhood bookstore and pick one up Deb's books, "Smitten Kitchen Cookbook" including her latest, "Smitten Kitchen, Every Day - Triumphant and Unfussy New Favorites." You can also check out the recipes on her blog smittenkitchen.com. You can find Susan Van Allen's books and articles on Italy at susanvanallen.com which is also where you can sign up for one of the women-only trips she leads through her beloved Italy. What was Italy's role in the Holocaust? Why is it that Italy is known as the Axis power that was benevolent to Jews, despite a scholarly consensus that many Italians actively participated in anti-Jewish persecution? In Italy's Jews from Emancipation to Fascism (Cambridge University Press, 2018), Shira Klein skillfully narrates the historical developments that belie this myth, and the complex process that have led to its perpetuation. By examining the experiences of Italian Jews during the Second World War from a wide chronological lens, Klein shows how the particular history of Italian Jews in the century prior to the Holocaust helped to mold their positive perception of Italy during and in the aftermath of genocide. Drawing from oral testimonies as well as unpublished memoirs, Klein reveals how a uniquely Jewish Italian patriotism was fostered in the decades leading up to (and even during) Fascism. Through their allegiance to Italy, she explains, many Jewish exiles and survivors themselves helped to spread the myth of Italian innocence. Shira Klein is Assistant Professor of History at Chapman University. Robin Buller is a PhD Candidate in History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Let’s face it, we’re right at the beginning of “Dessert Season," cold weather, family gatherings, ski-vacations…it lasts until we start thinking about bathing suits and beaches sometime after Valentine's Day. After a little dessert-directed Day Drinking featuring Stone Brewing Co’s Seasonal Chocolate/Chili/Spice/Coffee Beer, “Xocoveza” and Handmade, Barrel-Strength Bourbon from Noah’s Mill, Strauss and Phelps sit down with Lisa Ritter, one of the founders of LA's beloved “Big Sugar Bakeshop” (and a really great story-teller). We taste and talk about the sweet stuff and hear about Lisa ’s journey from being raised in a food-centric, Jewish/Italian family to the surprising, even to her, beginnings of Big Sugar.  She'll share her recipe for Old-Fashioned (and amazing) Banana Bread and a few great secrets to REALLY EASY Cookie Pie Crusts. Oh, and Strauss and Lisa explain the wonders and complexities of catering “Abondanza" style…something they each learned in their own way from Lisa’s mother, (and pro-caterer) Carol Ritter. Additional guest appearance from Friends writer/producer, Jeff Greenstein (who also happens to be Lisa's husband).   Day Drinking: Stone Brewing's "Xocoveca" - a winter-spiced mocha stout, and Noah's Mill handmade, small-batch Kentucky bourbon.    Recipe: Old-Fashioned Banana Bread Big Sugar Bakeshop - Website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook

On today’s episode of A Taste of the Past, Linda Pelaccio is talking about Jewish Italian food, or Cucina Ebraica, with a panel of experts. Jayne Cohen is a food writer and cookbook author involved with preserving the culinary roots of Jewish cooking. Her most recent cookbook is entitled Around the Passover Table and Cooking for Jewish New Year. Cara De Silva is a food historian who writes about food and culture, and has authored In Memory’s Kitchen: A Legacy from the Women of Terezin– a book featuring recipes from women in a Nazi concentration camp. Alessandra Rovati is a Jewish Italian food writer who also authors the blog Dinner in Venice. Tune in to hear how and when Jewish people immigrated to Italy, and how the various neighborhoods where they resided influenced their cooking. Learn why Jewish cuisine helped to popularize certain vegetables in Italian food, such as the tomato and the eggplant. What substitutes were used by Jews in the pork-heavy Italian diet? Hear about how ethnic tradition and cultural food survives through holiday meals. What Jewish foods have become part of everyday Italian cuisine? This program has been sponsored by Route 11 Potato Chips. “The number of things that went into making Italian Jewish cuisine… created a cuisine of incredible variety- even though it was all Jewish in some way. There were also issues whether or not some of these dishes came to be associated with Jews- and that was sometime the case- but most of these dishes were brought by Jewish people.” [6:50] “There has been fusion since there have been borders!” [15:00] — Cara De Silva on A Taste of the Past “One thing that is notable about Jewish Italian cuisine is that it was influenced by so many immigrants, sort of like Jewish food in the United States.” [11:20] — Jayne Cohen on A Taste of the Past
