From 2007-2010, I worked as a billing clerk for a trucking company, R+L Carriers. For the first several months, I was stationed at the Wilmington, Ohio headquarters. One of only two male billing clerks in the department, the other guy was a huge fan of Insane Clown Posse. We didn't talk much. A Christian heavy metal group called Demonhunter in particular paired well back then with commuting on my motorcycle until they gave me permission to work remotely from home. It was like a dose of masculinity offsetting what otherwise felt just a touch effeminate about what I did for a living - not least because my dad and one of my brothers-in-law were truck drivers there. Yet the older I get, the less sustainable the intensity of Demonhunter feels. For one, I think this is because I'm getting more easily tired the older I get. For another, I realize more the older I get that greater carefulness is needed in addressing complex, high-stakes situations and issues. More than intense emotion is required of me. Still, every now and then, I turn on this heavy stuff as a kind of palate cleanser, especially if an opposite sentiment like meekness, gentleness, kindness, patience seems as though it's been stressed overmuch in recent engagements. But I also think of where James says we should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. And I'm just not convinced a steady diet of angry music is any more helpful than committing to a steady diet of some other sentimental fare. Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes that there is a time and season for everything under heaven. That includes – to my mind, at least – a time to get angry and make just war. But that doesn't mean you want to become the theological equivalent of a Norseman berserker, unable to distinguish friend from foe, swinging wildly in all directions just because there's a war on. The same holds true for other sentimental imbalances. I'm reminded of a line from John Reuben's album ‘The Boy vs. The Cynic.' “And entertainers sing of extremes that don't exist for you and me.” Where James says the anger of man does not bring about the righteous life God desires, we do well to consider whether other emotional states do. I mean this as a sincere question. All the while, I suspect the answer is in the negative. We clearly are emotional beings. God made us that way. There's no sense apologizing for it. Moreover, I believe our being emotional is part of what it means that we are created in His image. So setting a goal of showing no emotion is not good. Instead, our goal should be to feel the appropriate emotion for each situation based on what is good and true. If I'm right about that, we should guard our hearts. We should take regular inventory of the emotions we're feeling and being influenced to feel – by music, imagery, words, relationships, décor, festivities, press releases, the news cycle, and even by God's Word. Just like we should be weighing whether we are thinking rightly about God and one another, or any other object or event, we should also be weighing whether we are feeling rightly. This holds true even of the recent book by Sinclair Ferguson I read, 'The Whole Christ,' concerned with, as the subtitle says, 'Legalism, Antinomianism, and Gospel Assurance—Why the Marrow Controversy Still Matters.' It's not hard to see how emotions ran high where discussions of the proper order of operations discussing the Law, Grace, Works, Salvation, and the Gospel were concerned. Controversy arose in relation to the pseudonymously published work by a certain E.F., titled 'The Marrow of Modern Divinity.' Yet all the more rather than less, works like this can prove instructive regarding the need not only to keep close watch over our doctrine and conduct, but also to regulate our emotional responses to ideas, works, and disagreement about the same. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Send us a Text Message.Welcome back to BLA Connections: a clear voice with your host Natalie Watson, bringing you discussions and insights from experts from across the globe on all things laryngology. In today's episode, we'll be discussing a lesser-known area of laryngology – the management of cricopharyngeal hypertrophy and small pharyngeal pouches with our guest, Kate Heathcote. Kate is a consultant laryngologist from Poole Hospital Foundation Trust on the south coast of England. As fellow to Professor Jean-Paul Marie in France, she learned techniques of laryngeal renovation, which she has continued to develop, research and introduce into the UK. During a further laryngology fellowship at the RNTNE she focused on airway procedures with Guri Sandhu, our president and phonosurgery with John Reuben. She now runs a comprehensive NHS laryngology service offering a voice clinic and a laryngology treatment clinic in which she treats many laryngological symptoms, one of which dysphagia, we focus on today. Kate became interested in dysphagia because of the scale and complexity of the problem and the lack of a clear treatment plan. She takes us step-by-step through in-office and surgical treatment of cricopharyngeal hypertrophy and small pharyngeal pouches, namely balloon dilation, endoscopic laser procedures and myotomy. Kate emphasises the importance of treating the individual, considering the risk/benefit factors and the vital role of the multidisciplinary team in managing these conditions. We hope you enjoy today's discussion. In this episode, we begin discussing our trauma surrounding our relationship with our Dads. Vanessa and Doug have the same biological mother, but Doug had both a biological father who was present in his life and Vanessa's biological father--who raised him. So, in this first part, we focus on Doug's Dads and how he understands his relationship to each of them. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll concentrate more thoroughly on Vanessa's relationship with the man both Vanessa and Doug call "Dad." [TRIGGER WARNINGS: Father's Day, Gaslighting, Mass Incarceration, Systemic Racism, Drug Addiction, Childhood Abandonment, Rape, Anti-Asian Racism (in the quiz)] Show Notes The website Doug found through a link on Twitter is called Shoppe Black, and it contains links to all sorts of Black-owned businesses--including the list of Black-owned coffee brands where he discovered Blk & Bold. This week, Doug began drinking their La Guadalupe, Honduras - Single Origin (Direct Trade), Light Roast, and it is 100% certifiably delicious. Buy their stuff, y'all. And then follow the company on Twitter @BlkandBold so you can talk about it. The local coffee shop in Columbus that Vanessa mentioned is called Upper Cup Coffee. If you're ever in the area--and if this whole Covid shit ever goes away--be sure to check it out. Doug refers to his biological Dad as "Dad Rice," because his last name is "Rice," and he refers to his "other Dad" as "Dad Roland," because his last name is "Roland." Also, Vanessa and Doug mention "Urbana" quite frequently. Just FYI--that's the central/southwestern rural Ohio hometown they grew up in. It looks like Carmazzi's, the vintage Urbana candy store Vanessa references, is still in operation after all. Doug mentions having believed, as a 13-year old, that John Reuben was the "Christian Eminem." If you listen to his music, you'll see how ridiculous that is. Hmm, it looks like he actually is still making music. Who knew? (Bonus show note: Doug named his and Jessy's first dog together "Reuben" after John Reuben). The study Doug is participating in with his church is based on the book How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram Kendi. It's definitely worth looking into if you haven't read it already. We're not even going to give the quiz the courtesy of a link, because it's sooooo racist. If you Google it, find the quiz, and don't understand why we think it's racist, then we recommend you actually getting to know some Asian people (or at least Asian-Americans) before you go visiting any country on that list. This episode was recorded on June 24, 2020.

Whether it’s because of social anxiety, social awkwardness, or just plain stubbornness, audio engineers have a tendency to play the lone wolf. We’d rather sit in our dungeons and manipulate audio than actually speak to another human. What if I told you that being a social troglodyte isn’t the fastest, easiest, or most-effective way to move your business forward. John Ruben is a fantastic example of what you can accomplish when you surround yourself with incredible team members every step of the way. Listen now to learn how rapper John Reuben went from rapping to running a team for one of the first YouTube networks and eventually selling the company to Disney. In this episode you’ll discover: How finding the right thing at the right time and innovating can lead to incredible growth Why you should collaborate with other people What opportunities the “lone wolf” attitude can destroy Why you shouldn’t compare your stress with someone else’s stress How the go-giver mindset helps grow your business What questions you should ask yourself when launching a new venture Why you should run a practical business How you can get ahead by having a DIY mindset but also accepting help when it’s offered For full show notes, go to www.thesixfigurehomestudio.com/119 If you want to suggest a guest, an idea for the podcast, or you have some general feedback, then you can submit that via email to podcast@thesixfigurehomestudio.com

What does a teenage farm kid growing up in Pataskala, Ohio know about launching a career in hip-hop music and becoming a rapper — in the no-internet era of the mid-1990s? Arguably very little, but that didn’t stop a young John Zappin from pursuing his joy anyway. Always using humor as his safety shield, John embraced the uncomfortable moments of dropping his rhymes in front of audiences at summer camp, the church hall, and open mic nights to build his confidence and find his voice. That voice would eventually ink a deal with Gotee Records where he would go on to record six albums. In a pre-file sharing, pre-American Idol world, John put in the work to carve out his niche in an unlikely genre of rap. John shares his story and drops some wisdom for anyone pursuing their dream. But now on the cusp of 40 and having already achieved a level of success that any recording artists would envy, John is like that teenage kid all over again: back in Ohio and asking “what if" and wondering “what’s next.”

David and Chunjay discuss where they are and what they are doing for the weekend. David discusses the ups and downs of therapy. On the collapse of silence. What is lacking? Sometimes it’s not stuff. On living within the evangelical subculture. Discussing whiskey. On Jamey and David’s friendship, and the wisdom David imparted to him. On sharing stories. David is working on a project called Postmodern Hymns. On Christianity and Art. On the narrative of faith giving way to the narrative of consumption. On how Christian music has become a safe soccer mom thing. On John Reuben saying “shit” on his new record. Lots of other stuff. :) Kenosis - about emptying, not acquiring knowledge. On success vs. vulnerability. On being helpful to friends. Great lines from David: “Sex is a gift or a curse, depending on how you handle it.” “Maybe postmodernity and consumption are not the best thing for the soul.” “I’m an older guy trying to figure out, ‘What is my legacy?’” “I get to be around children a lot. I find that the older I get, the more and more children make. They’re still vibrant about life.” “In ancient cultures, there was a lot more storytelling, and people had those stories inform them.” “As the consumption became more important than the proclamation, the proclamation got dumbed down, and the consumption went up, and so now it’s bad art, and it’s trying to talk about God simultaneously. It’s like, oh, crap, we don’t need more of this.” “Any guy who wants to walk in integrity with his sexuality knows that he needs assistance.” “I think self is much more communal. It’s not just communal in the sense of you’re meant to be a part of something bigger than yourself. You don’t become yourself until you understand you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. There’s a mutuality to it.” “What part of my life am I in denial about? Because I think somehow what has happened to me in the past when I did those things, it wouldn’t happen again. What would lead me to believe that I could somehow bypass that? And when somebody tells you the story of where they’re at, it’s a reminder of their mutual vulnerability.” “Our culture doesn’t teach us to wait for the good stuff.” “I was trying to act like I was angry, because that was what I was told to do. The truth is, I had to get in touch with how pervasive those acts had…affected me, made me afraid of people, made me stand-offish, made me fearful of intimacy, made me distrustful of EVERYBODY. I’m talking at a deep level. Physically distrustful.” “And of course it fed into some of my weaknesses, like rather than be in a healthy sexual relationship, I would be more of a voyeur. I would stand apart. I didn’t know how to be in my body, because I left my body as a 6 year old kid.” “I’ve had to realize that not going to that place and processing that was very dangerous for my soul. I didn’t know it, but it was forming in me this sense that I was what happened to me.” “And we often tend to think like we are what happened to us. So if somebody divorces me unfairly, if someone abuses me unfairly, fires us unfairly, says something to us that’s unfair, there’s this part of us, the little kid inside, ‘Well, I guess that’s who I am.’ And then we start making decisions that affirm that. And then one day we wake up and find that we’re the perpetrator that hurt us.” “Now, it’s more of a protecting myself by believing what’s beautiful about me, what’s beautiful and true. And not what’s dark and hidden.” “Before I was trying to be angry because people would say, ‘Oh, he’s working on it.’” “Do you like tacos?” “Look at me, sure.” Lines from Chunjay: “The intent and context. I played a couple of ‘Christian’ shows this summer, and I really am trying to avoid doing that. The must that I am writing now belongs in bars and breweries, and coffee shops where adults are. And I remember playing my first youth group in more than a decade. And I cut two songs out. It’s not that I said anything that was technically wrong, but gosh, our lead song is ‘The Waitress Song,’ and we talk about drinking rum and Coke, and asking the waitress for her phone number, and that is not what I’m trying to put in front of 14 years old.” What are we drinking: David Bunker: Riesling Wine Jamey Bennett: 1816 Chattanooga Whiskey, a Yuengling David Bunker’s info: Find him on Facebook, and look up the notes if you friend him. KJ-52 and Chunjay sit down for coffee in Florida and reflect on their experiences in hip-hop and the Christian hip-hop subgenre. Little Cuban cafe, on KJ discovering Cuban colada coffee. KJ does not enjoy pour over coffee. Chunjay eating a Cubano sandwich. On what KJ-52 is up to: crowdfunding new album, videos, documentary. Adding public speaking to rapping. “I’m coming from the perspective of a 42 year old man. I’m not coming from where I was when I was 25 and came into the industry….I’m an old MacBook Pro with updated software.” KJ-52’s struggle after his record deal with Essential ended. Shopping to Nashville record labels. Ended up with Tooth & Nail/Uprok. KJ on Flicker Records: “Then they turned round and signed you guys, and I was so ticked off.” “Revenge of the Nerds” by KJ-52 with Pigeon John from the KJ-52 Remixed album. On figuring out his niche, and finding a way forward. On catching criticism for things he did. On his “backpack rapper” origins with Sons of Intellect and Shadow of the Locust. “I always looked at every record as ‘starting over.’” On his platform, not just “youth group rapper.” History: Goatee led him to Todd Collins. Todd took him to Essential. On the KJ-52/Royal Ruckus tour of Maui in 2001. On Royal Ruckus: “You two were the most interesting, hilarious, weird people I’d ever hung out with in a long time. Historically Yours from the University of Iowa Special Collections
(Corrected version of the podcast! While talking about international pirated versions of Poe's books, we mis-stated details about U.S. copyright in 1868. This file corrects that. If you know more about this letter be sure to email us and we'll read your letter on the pod. colleen-theisen@uiowa.edu, thanks! - Colleen). For this episode of Historically Yours, Curator of Science Fiction and Popular Culture, Peter Balestrieri takes us back into the publishing industry reading a handwritten letter from 1868 written on behalf of Miss Rosa Poe, sister of Edgar Allan Poe. Letter information: MsL T473d Thompson, John Reuben to Eugene Didier 28 January 1868 Letter text: 17 Lafayette Place: New York City, 28 Jan. 1868 Dear Sir, I am again compelled to remind you that you have returned no answer in the matter of the Juvenile Verses of Edgar Poe, which I submitted to you some time ago for “Southern Society” and to ask either that you will return me the Ms. or else authorize us to write to Miss Rosa Poe that she may draw upon you for $15 - the sum I named as compensation for them. I explained to you when I sent the Ms. that Miss Poe was in a very destitute situation, and that I had undertaken, purely as a work of charity, to find a purchaser for the verses. If you want them, write me to that effect at once, if you do not want them, send them back to me, for delay in a case of destitution is really really unreasonable. I desire to get two copies of your paper containing my poem of “Music in Camp,” and one copy of the number which published Simms’ Sketch of [Timrod?]. If you will be good enough to send us these, and will let me know what I am to pay for them, I will send you the amount in postage stamps. Very truly yours, R. Thompson Eugene Didier Esq.
