Brazil's Proactive Measures Against HIVBrazil has been at the forefront of combating HIV, implementing proactive measures that have made a significant difference. The country began providing no-cost access to CD4 and viral load testing and antiretroviral drugs as early as 1996. This early intervention and consistent approach led to a remarkable outcome: the number of HIV cases in Brazil was significantly lower than initially predicted. An article from the New England Journal of Medicine stated that initial estimates predicted Brazil would have 1.2 million people infected with HIV by the year 2000, but with the strategies the country put in place, their actual numbers were about half of what was predicted. By offering free access to treatments and diagnostic tests, Brazil showcased the importance of early and sustained intervention in managing and reducing the spread of HIV. The Rising Challenge of HIV Drug ResistanceOne of the most pressing challenges in the fight against HIV is the development of drug resistance. Dr. Ricardo Diaz emphasizes that as the HIV virus replicates, it can produce strains resistant to treatment. This resistance threatens the efficacy of antiretroviral drugs, making it crucial to monitor and manage. The World Health Organization reports an increasing rate of HIV drug resistance, underscoring the need for continuous research, monitoring, and adaptation of treatment strategies. Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Drugs Exist, but are not 100% EffectivePrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is also an antiretroviral drug given to uninfected individuals who are at risk of infection to reduce their chances of acquiring HIV. PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV when taken as indicated, but much less effective when it isn't taken consistently. Additionally, it's possible to be exposed to HIV strains that are drug resistant while on PrEP, so monitoring resistance in people on PrEP is another important step in prevention. The Gap in HIV Drug Resistance TestingDespite the advancements in treatment, there's a noticeable disparity in HIV drug resistance testing, especially in Brazil. Dr. Diaz highlights that while a centralized lab in Brazil performs genotype testing, the number of tests conducted falls short of the actual need. With 10% of patients on treatment showing a viral load above the desired limit, the demand for resistance testing is evident. Bridging this gap and increasing surveillance efforts is essential to tailor treatments effectively and combat the spread of drug-resistant HIV strains.

Dan talks with Athletic Director for Penn State- Schuylkill Joe Godri on site at the BIG Vision Sports Complex. Joe Godri, who is a former Head Baseball Coach for Villanova was passing by the complex one day and had an epiphany. There was a need and we could fill it. Penn State-Schuylkill needed a location for home games and we have fields to spare. Thus began the partnership with Penn State Schuylkill to hold their Baseball and Softball home games at our facility. Joe talks about his journey from Coach to Athletic Director and about his hopes for the future with the partnership. Dan is later joined by Berkshire Baseball Alumni and now Penn State – Schuylkill Catcher, Ricardo Diaz. This is his 2nd year at college and he talks with Dan abou the differences from playing at the complex compared to the other locations they were at. He also gives some advice to younger players about the transition of High School to College and the importance of class.

But Diaz gets all the inmates on his side. All except Turner, who Oliver has convinced that he can help him get some leniency. So the two of them make their way through the gauntlet of mad prisoners and save some guards' lives. Once Oliver is able to confront Diaz, the final battle ensues. It's not an easy road to save the day, but they all manage to stop the bad guys, and with the mysterious Green Arrow's help, they even successfully capture the Dragon! "The Longbow Hunters" are loose in Star City and they are stealing tech for Ricardo Diaz. Diggle and ARGUS are on their trail, but their priority is recovering the goods and not stopping Diaz. Felicity isn't comfortable with that reality and does whatever she needs to to track the man that is destroying her life and family. Oliver wants to know the people in prison with connections to Diaz. The best person to get that information is from Brick, but the only way to do it is do take out an honest guard. Oliver isn't quite that far gone, but he will have to stoop a little too low to get what he wants. Despite her feelings, Dinah sends police to protect Laurel from Diaz. Laurel won't have that and tries to go after him herself. Luckily, Black Canary trails along to help out. Michelle - Roy comes back, first words are “Thea sent me.” Diaz gets captured quickly; otherwise, Felicity will be gone too long, and the show can't be without Felicity and Oliver most of the season. Diggle head of ARGUS, Roy, and NTA not enough to carry show; has to be resolved by crossover or the crossover deals with this mess. There has to be a better villain or maybe not one big bad all season. Sometimes "The Ties That Bind" us are stronger than those that separate us. Oliver and all of his friends will need to band together once again if they hope to stop Ricardo Diaz. Now that his goal is to kill Oliver and everyone he loves, everyone will have to use extra caution as they're attacked around every corner. The only option Oliver can think of is asking Anatoly for some help in getting to Diaz. Anatoly proves he has found his honor again by feeding them some intel and leading Diaz out. But his new friends in the Quadrant help him out and he gets away, after stabbing Curtis in a fight. Luckily for the good guys, they discover an piece of tech that may contain important information. Lyla will have to break into SCPD with a sniffer to get it. It almost works, but to no avail. Furious, Diaz kills two more leaders in the Quadrant and declares war on Team Arrow. They fail to get what they needed, so Oliver will have to ask for help from a very unexpected source. All rise to hear "Docket No. 11-19-41-73" in which Oliver Queen is on trial for the crimes of being Green Arrow. The sharp lawyer, Alexa Van Owen has many tricks up her sleeve to convince the jury that this man is guilty. And it's really a problem that Ricardo Diaz has everyone from the judge to the jury under his control. Despite calling some witnesses that give some damning evidence against Oliver, Diggle may have something that could actually get him out of this mess. Green Arrow shows up in court, but under the hood seems to be Tommy Merlyn. This puts some reasonable doubt in the heads of some, but when Laurel takes the stand Diaz expects her to put the nail in the coffin. Though she may have the guts to finally make a difference. This week we find "Shifting Allegiances" that could either take Ricardo Diaz down, or be bad for the good guys. Oliver is trying to get Anatoly to see that his allegiance is misplaced, and even gets him an opening back into the Bratva. But Anatoly seems to appreciate his new place with the Dragon, so he delivers Oliver right to him. Curtis and Dinah welcome home Rene from the hospital and they are hoping to stop some of Diaz's operations. They even get some assistance from Diggle's new ARGUS team, but Wild Dog is a little more Wild Dog when he realizes that Zoe could be in danger of losing her dad if he dies on a mission. Quentin gets a visit from Diaz and learns that Laurel has been working closely with him and can't get out of her dangerous alliance. And it all ends when Ricardo sends Oliver to the police for a trial that could end it all for Green Arrow. Enter "The Dragon", on this week's Arrow. Ricardo Diaz is out to get even more power by gaining the favor of the most powerful crime syndicate in the country, the Quadrant. At first they send Diaz on a series of doggy errands for them, but he quickly gets tired of that and decides to overtake the son of one of the head members of the powerful group. By the time this arrogant mobster realizes how powerful Diaz and Black Siren are, it's too late. He is sent in as a trap to his father's meeting. And when Diaz gets in there, he is able to decisively convince them that he is powerful enough to be a part of their group. A "Doppelgänger" can cause a lot of problems if they pretend to be your daughter and join up with the new criminal boss in town. Laurel goes to the press and claims to be the real Laurel Lance. This insures her protection by Oliver so she won't reveal his true identity to the public. As long as the good Mayor can keep Dinah away from her, that arrangement may work out ok. But then the prosecutors reveal that they will present Roy Harper as a key witness in the case against Green Arrow. The team does all they can to track down Roy and rescue him, but he's being held and tortured by some pretty bad guys, who are all minions of Ricardo Diaz. Thea is even so desperate to rescue Roy that she suits up too. But Diaz is smart, and he seems to know everything about the team. In an attempt to gain their trust, Black Siren steps up and gives them the information they need to get Roy to safety. It works, and luckily he gets away with Thea. The producer jokingly mentions that he tweeted the title “Deathstroke Returns,” with actor Manu Bennett tagged. The key part has now been cast. Kirk Acevedo has been tapped for a season-long recurring arc as Ricardo Diaz, based on the Richard Dragon character. In the comics, Ricardo is one of the identities Richard Dragon takes on. A hardened ex-con recently released from prison for crimes he didn't commit, Ricardo Diaz (Acevedo) is bent on taking over Star City's criminal underworld. We apologize for any inconvenience.  Tonight's event features the book To Live and Dine in L.A. by USC Professor Josh Kun with a Foreword by Chef Roy Choi.To Live and Dine in LA is a huge project of The Library Foundation of Los Angeles based on the Menu Collection of the Los Angeles Public Library. Central to the project are a major exhibition at the Central Library downtown and the book published by Angel City Press. Together, the exhibition and the book ask and address an important question: How did Los Angeles become the modern city the world watches? We know some of the answers all too well. Sunshine. Railroads. Hollywood. Freeways. But there's another often overlooked but especially delicious and revealing factor: food. Think veggie tacos and designer pizzas, hot dogs on sticks and burgers from golden arches, Cobb Salads and chocolate topped ice cream sundaes, not to mention the healthiest dishes on the planet. Ask anyone who has eaten in L.A.—the city shapes the tastes that predict how America eats. And it always has.  ​With more than 200 menus—some dating back to the nineteenth century—culled from thousands in the Menu Collection of the Los Angeles Public Library, To Live and Dine in L.A. ​is a visual feast of a book. In his detailed history, author Josh Kun riffs on what the food of a foodie city says about place and time; how some people eat big while others go hungry, and what that says about the past and today. Kun turns to chefs and cultural observers for their take on modern: Chef Roy Choi sits down long enough to say why he writes “some weirdass menus.” Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Jonathan Gold looks at food as theater, and museum curator Staci Steinberger considers the design of classic menus like Lawry's. Restaurateur Bricia Lopez follows a Oaxacan menu into the heart of Koreatown. The city's leading chefs remix vintage menus with a 21st century spin: Joachim Splichal, Nancy Silverton, Susan Feniger, Ricardo Diaz, Jazz Singsanong, Cynthia Hawkins, Micah Wexler, Ramiro Arvizu and Jaime Martin del Campo cook up the past with new flavors. Josh Kun ​is an Associate Professor in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. His previous collaboration with L.A. He is author and an editor of several books, including Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America, Tijuana Dreaming: Life and Art at the Global Border, and Black and Brown Los Angeles: Beyond Conflict and Coalition. As a curator he has worked with the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Jewish History in Philadelphia. Kun curated Songs in the Key of L.A. in 2013 and To Live and Dine in L.A. in 2015, both exhibitions that originated at Los Angeles Central Library galleries. Roy Choi was born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and went on to cook at the internationally acclaimed Le Bernardin. He was named Best New Chef by Food and Wine in 2010. Choi is the co-owner, co-founder, and chef of Kogi BBQ, as well as the restaurants Chego!, A-Frame, Sunny Spot and POT. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
