Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics releases for the week of April 16, 2025. We have the end of Challengers of the Unknown as some questions are answered and more are raised. Similarly, Detective Comics reaches the end of its first arc for this era in a very satisfying ending that shows that even in the face of great temptation, Batman has lines he will not cross. Nightwing starts a new arc that brings some personal context to the power vacuum that currentkly exists in Bludhaven, while Batman looks to help Wonder Woman solve a murder on Themiscrya. New Gods, Zatanna and Titans all continue their current stroylines in compelling fashion with gorgeous art. Finally Absolute Flash gives us even more personality for the absolute Rogues and shows just how out of control Wally's power are. It's a great week of DC titles so join us to hear all about these books and more.

Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

It's time to swim in the Deadpool and do the DEATHSTROKE! Some people would give their left eye for an episode like this. Those people probably need help just like Slade. Listen now! Intro - Jeremy Whitley Apologies for the delay Background (2:18) Deathstroke (Slade Wilson) created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in The New Teen Titans #2 (Dec. 1980) At 16, he lied about his age to join the Army during the Korean War, and later met his wife, Captain Adeline Kane - after they married, they had three children: Grant, Joseph, and Rose Subjected to an experiment where he was injected with a substance that drastically increased his healing, as well as giving him expanded use of his brain's capacity #BecauseComics Started working as a mercenary, keeping his business private from Adeline, until a criminal kidnapped Joe to blackmail Slade - although Slade killed the criminal, Joe's throat was sliced, destroying his vocal cords and rendering him mute - this angered Adeline, who shot Slade through the right eye Grant took a contract to kill the Teen Titans, but died after an experiment to give him superhuman abilities - Slade vowed vengeance on the Titans, blaming them for Grant's death, but was defeated The Judas Contract - Slade used Terra to infiltrate the Titans, then once he learned their identities and weaknesses, systematically went after each of the Titans - Joseph joined with Nightwing to possess his father, and after Terra died, Slade was captured After that, Slade occasionally worked alongside the Titans while still working as a merc - he was forced to mercy kill Joseph, who was a Titan known as Jericho and was possessed by the souls of Azarath Gave Adeline a blood transfusion which drove her insane, and she tried to kill all metahumans, blaming them for Jericho's death - when she requested a mercy kill, Slade refused but Starfire obliged, and he cut ties with the Titans Jericho possessed Slade right before his death, and used Slade's body to enact revenge on all the Titans - this led to Slade training Rose, his last remaining child, to kill Jericho, but his methods drove her insane Was responsible for the destruction of Bludhaven and killing over 100,000 people to mentally destroy Nightwing - he was defeated by Batman, Robin (Tim), and Nightwing New 52 - reboots Slade as a mercenary who lost his eye in a terrorist attack, and after his sons and wife were killed, he goes on a rampage to protect Rose Dies in Rebirth after being killed by Red Arrow Issues - Theme: Being too smart for your own good doesn't have to turn out this bad! (9:59) Kids: They're a handful, am I right? Intellectualization as an isolator  The definition of “Enough” (26:05) Break (35:58) Plugs for Sips Suds & Smokes and Frigay the 13th Treatment (37:57) In-universe - Give him a protection contract and make him honor it Out of universe - So many examples with real-life veterans (41:35) Skit (49:29) Hello Deathstroke, I'm Dr. Issues. -Hello, Doctor. *pause* This is unusual and I don't like it. Well, therapy or counseling isn't always meant to be fun, and lots of people hate going to the doctor, so -*interrupting* Not like that. I've been a wanted man for ages. You've seen patients like me in confined areas before. Yet you let me waltz in without a hint of security. No shackles, no guards, not even a warning. That doesn't make sense. I can only draw 2 conclusions. Either you are requesting my services, in which case you have no need for safety, or you have an unknown unknown, which uncharacteristically would put me at a disadvantage. I'm sure you've read my profile. -From the “exposure” you had a while back, sure. Very sloppy, and yet cleaned up as if it never happened. Your current information is modest on networks but still acclamatory. But I'm sure you are referencing my ability to infer that you are a pacifist and would never entrust my means. Very well. I will take this session at face value. Humanity is full of idiots, you're no different. That is quite the exposition and non sequitur simultaneously. I'll bite. What's wrong with humanity, and how does that affect you? -It's hard to act with perfection when you can't let morons know you are imperfect. I can exploit anyone I want. Sometimes it's pleasurable. It's certainly profitable. But I'm not above petty revenge. I've loved before. I hate even more. And yet, only one of those goes unrequited for long. No one will pity a mercenary.  You don't deserve pity. No one does. -*pause, genuine shock* Too Machiavellian of a phrase for a Hippocratic practitioner. Too quick of a process for the smartest man in the room. No one deserves pity. They deserve grace, honesty, and empathy, the ratios of which can be seen as enlightening, punishing, and rewarding, depending on the circumstances. The chase is beneath you. By your own account, I'M beneath you. So why bother? Money? Really? -If I have mastered the rules of a game, then I should be able to keep my own scoreboard at my whim. But I have other motivations, and yes, I will admit that they are just as basic as any other *ahem* family man. I don't pretend to be stereotypical in my reactions, but I mourn my losses, too. I feel like this is all a test of my wits. I have to prove to you I'm worthy of your time. You could have ended this…take of that what you will…at any point. Do you really think I have some sort of ace up my sleeve? -Unlike you, I don't use the colloquial “I feel” To substitute for “I think.” And yes, I think…haha, I KNOW you have me scouted. Anything less and you are a trusting fool. Try me. -I know you've encountered the Titans before. I created a diversion so they will be too busy searching for a fake battle hundreds of miles away. You are alone. Am I? -I know about your latest burner phone. All signals from this office are blocked. It's a brick, now. No bats will be in this belfry. Um…well… -Surely that can't be it, right? You have more to deliver to test my mettle? The archer? The Martian? The big blue buffoon?  Don't call me Shirley. -*Pause* You truly are an idiot like all of the rest. Cool, then you don't have to waste your energy on killing me. -You're not a mark. That's the only reason you're still breathing.  I'll take it! -As if you have a choice. Pathetic. *door opens as he's about to leave* Oh, and Mr. Wilson, I just wanted to let you know that you don't have to intimidate someone who is genuinely trying to help you. It makes you look like a casual jerk instead of a ruthless assassin. Amongst the government agencies, interstellar factions, extradimensional rulers, and plain ol' folks who want to see you suffer, I might be your only chance of living any semblance of a peaceful life. I'm risking my existence by talking to you and keeping my vow of confidentiality only if you mean what you just said, because I can have a clear conscience that you are a shrewd butthurt businessman rather than the essence of evil that those who conspire against you would want me to believe. I figured all of that out without anyone telling me a single word. So I may not be a queen on your chessboard, but I damn sure am NOT a pawn. -Do you *interrupting* Slade. -*pause* All you had to say was my name, and we could have avoided the banter. No contacts, please, unless I come to you. Now we have an agreement. Goodbye. A starting point for anyone curious, another reference for those who devour all genre-related things, or a cool artifact for anyone in the know. This book is part of an ongoing series that covers musicians like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Poly Styrene, Don Letts, Minority Threat, and many others. From LA to London, from the early 1900s till today, Buchanan examines and presents narratives to show how Black musicians shape (and are shaped by) the world we live in. Buchanan is an illustrator, writer, and musician born in Eerie, PA. After risking more than a decade of her life to drumming and singing in hardcore, post-punk, and power pop bands, she has returned to her first love: comics. Besides doing industry work-for-hire, she has most recently created self-published books Strange Glances and the POCtober Sketchbook. Buchanan's creative work centers on exploring different areas of Black heritage, such as rock ‘n' roll musical roots and general history, in social and political arenas and science fiction. Background (4:13) Dick Grayson created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in Detective Comics #38 (April 1940) Dick Grayson is a trapeze artist whose parents were killed by gangsters - Batman helps him seek revenge against the crime boss responsible, and he trains under Batman to become Robin the Boy Wonder Later leads the Teen Titans, a group of sidekicks Post-Crisis, he chafes under the sidekick role, and renames himself Nightwing, starting to operate as a solo hero in Bludhaven, neighboring city to Gotham First operates as Batman after Bruce leaves Gotham after the Knightfall storyline - begins to appreciate what Bruce goes through on a regular basis Reunites with the Titans, although after two teammates die, he disbands the team once again After Battle for the Cowl, he works as Batman, with Damian Wayne as the new Robin New 52 - still Nightwing, just a few years younger than before His identity is revealed to the world by the Crime Syndicate - they believe him dead after attaching him to a machine connected to his heart rate - Lex Luthor stops his heart to free him from the machine before reviving him with a shot of adrenaline Working undercover, he infiltrates the criminal Spyral organization - this storyline is told in the Grayson book by Tim Seeley & Tom King Briefly returns as Robin to help other members of the Bat-Family while Bruce is amnesiac Rebirth - Spyral wiped his identity clean, so he resumes operating as Nightwing, and starts a new Titans team Shot by KGBeast and nearly dies - gives him memory loss, and he stops fighting crime for a spell until he’s attacked by the Court of Owls (specifically his grandfather, who is a Talon), and the fight triggers his memory Issues (10:15) Transition from angry teen in the New Teen Titans to a more carefree, relaxed adult in modern comics - is this natural development or just a character retcon? Shared trauma with Bruce led to interesting mentor-mentee relationship (21:42) Mental adaptation as a “Jack of all trades” within the Bat Family (29:00) Break (37:22) Plugs for Grief Burrito & Now You’ve Seen It, plus Gail Simone Treatment (38:45) In-universe - Doc is the man in the chair Out of universe (44:54) - treatment similar to those of first responders Skit (51:19) Ending (57:41) Recommended reading: Grayson by Seeley/King Next episodes: Laura Kinney (X-23), Superboy Prime, Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley) References: Sidekicks episode - Anthony (05:38) Bane episode - Anthony (07:31) Pulp Fiction - Anthony (08:30) Saved by the Bell - Doc (14:18) Scott Adams - talent stack - Doc (33:00) Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Spotify: here Twitter Facebook Patreon TeePublic Discord

Dick Grayson goes through relationship problems, which are far worse than Nigthwing having to battle a boatload of supervillains.Affiliate link include.Transcript:Host: Nightwing takes on a ship full of supervillains, from stem to stern, and then faces his former espionage colleagues in a battle for his life but could the worst thing going for Dick Grayson be his relationship problems? We'll tell you all about it next as we look at Nightwing volume 4 Blockbuster straight ahead.[Into Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best Comics in the universe from Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. Host: During the New 52, Dick Grayson went through an era where he was no longer a superhero or Nightwing but rather a secret agent for Spyral because spies are known for their very punny use of names. However, with D.C. Rebirth, Dick Grayson returned to the role of Nightwing at the first book better than Batman. It's really good but in current adventures you can probably start reading with Nightwing Volume 2 book, Back to Bludhaven. In that book he came to Bludhaven, got a job at a community center and came upon a group of washed up young super villains who were trying to avoid falling back into the life of crime and also were a bit phobic having been defeated by Batman and Robin in the past so they moved to Bludhaven for a fresh start. Among them is Shawn, who as a super villain operated as the Defacer. Dick fell in love with Shawn and she is actually kidnapped at the end of the 2nd volume and rescued in the 3rd volume. During that period, it was thought that Shawn was pregnant, but her pregnancy test was not confirmed. So, with that history in mind we take a look at the Volume 4 of the D.C. Rebirth Nightwing Blockbuster and we'll talk about the two arcs as action pieces and then talk about the relation stuff that went around it Nightwing Blockbuster; This one focuses on Roland Desmond, who is actually the brother of Mark Desmond, the original Blockbuster. Tiger Shark is the big fish, if you will, in Bludhaven, the boss of the city and does not like Nightwing's presence and wants Blockbuster to take care of him. However, Blockbuster appears to Nightwing offering him a chance to take down the villain, Tiger Shark and really this is a case of Blockbuster trying to play both sides against the middle and it's an interesting maneuver. He actually ends up leading Nightwing into a trap where he is aboard a ship full of supervillains who have been brought on by Tiger Shark and are supposed to turn the tables on Nightwing. I actually like a lot about this storyline. One thing that I will highlight; I think the Blockbuster character is interesting in the way that that character develops in his plan plays out is kind of fun to watch. I also think that I like how Tim Sealy, the writer of the book, handles this guest supervillain or I should say all the super villains on the boat because a lot of them were somewhat obscure, particularly if you weren't expert in every aspect of the D.C. Universe and sometimes when you have a book it gets kind of overloaded when you have so many supervillains stars where you've got to explain who this super villain is and all of their background. However, you don't really have that with Nightwing and the idea advanced by Seeley is that Nightwing was required to learn very basic sketches of the various supervillains that he and Batman might encounter so that they would be prepared and so you just get this very quick thumbnail sketch. What's the nature of this villain? What's the nature of the threat that he poses? Cool, let's fight and it's just handled very quickly in a way that doesn't bog down the story. So, I really like that aspect of this and I also like how it shows Dick's heroism when it's revealed that all of the supervilla...

In this episode, Eric and Russell review the first in the ongoing series of Nightwing. Child of Justice was published in October of 1996, written by Chuck Dixon with art by Scott McDaniel. This issue begins the Bludhaven story arc for Nightwing. There is some great setup for the ongoing story in this issue. We meet an old Batman villain, get introduced to a band of bad furries, and run into the trope of corrupt cops. The eighth episode [of ‘Arrow'] is going to have a lot of big things coming out of it, and that's going to be one of them. Yes.” Ramsey also weighed in how Digg will react to the idea of an alien invasion, which will take place over the course of The CW's four-show crossover this fall. “How is he going to react to seeing a woman fly across the horizon in a skirt? That's an even better question!” he shared. “All of this flips Digg out, but I think he's slowly getting a grip that this is the world that he now lives in and that's part of his journey as well this season.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-diggle-will-confront-flash-about-the-consequences-of-flashpoint/   Arrow: Amell calls Oliver's vigilantism ‘A last resort' (Date: 28 Oct 2016) Asked what he thought of Oliver's enduring legacy as Green Arrow, Amell told CBR, “He's very tough on [the new recruits], but then — in private moments, speaking with people he holds in close confidence — he sort of extols their virtues. So I think that he's proud, but again, being a vigilante (and I think that he would agree with this) is the last resort, not the first resort. In a perfect world, Star City wouldn't need a Green Arrow. So I think that the proliferation of them, while heartening in some sense and encouraging, is also a reminder that he hasn't gotten the job done.” As to whether or not this job could ever truly be done, he added, “Of course! When the show is done, he'll have gotten the job done.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-amell-calls-olivers-vigilantism-a-last-resort/   Mericle calls Arrow's 100th episode a ‘Love letter to the show' (Date: 28 Oct 2016) Wendy Mericle spoke to CBR about finding a balance between “Arrow's” legacy and the crossover event, the future of the show, Green Lantern Easter eggs, female super-villains and more. About the 100th episode, she said, “It's the 100th and we wanted it to be very nostalgic and very much about the DNA of “Arrow,” of the show when it started. We feel really lucky. We found a way to balance the fact that we do now live in a world where there are metas and there are aliens. Greg Berlanti came up with this brilliant way of accomplishing that and making it very much a love letter to the fans and to the show.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/mericle-calls-arrows-100th-episode-a-love-letter-to-the-show/   Arrow: Lance & Thea will develop a father/daughter dynamic  (Date: 29 Oct 2016) At the celebration of “Arrow's” 100th episode, Paul Blackthorne — who plays Quentin — told CBR that Thea's offer of help will lead the two to develop a father/daughter relationship as the season moves forward. He said, "We both felt the characters wouldn't realize that was happening for quite a long time. It's not like, ‘Oh, she feels like my daughter!' It's quite unspoken, but of course it does certainly feel like that. It's like, ‘I recognize this feeling, but it's with somebody else.' It's been interesting playing on that dynamic with her.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-lance-thea-will-develop-a-fatherdaughter-dynamic/   Is Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim teasing The Question appearance? Talia is the daughter of Ra's — who was the main villain in “Arrow's” third season, played by Matt Nable — and the half-sister of Nyssa al Ghul, who's played by Katrina Law. Talia, like Nyssa, is an elite warrior, excelling in multiple different forms of combat. Unlike her sister though, she refuses to pick sides and instead creates her own. "In some ways, there can be some episodes of Arrow that can be just as optimistic in their own way, especially given the perils that they're up against," Berlanti told ComicBook.com during a recent event celebrating the hundredth episode of Arrow. "It's definitely a darker-toned show in a lot of regards, but it's always the relationships and those are just as emotional and deep and fun." What's the Flashpoint connection? CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES   Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/10/05/arrow-easter-eggs-and-dc-comics-references-in-legacy (comicbook.com)   Captain Pike -  Is that a Star Trek reference? We really can't decide. Either way, per his nametag, that police captain talking to Thea in the opening scene appears to be "Captain Pike," the captain of the USS Enterprise immediately prior to James T. Kirk. Lonnie Machin - A recurring villain from season four of Arrow, Lonnie Machin (the first baddie Oliver fights in season five) is better known to DC Comics fans as the antihero Anarky. Wild Dog - the first new member of  Team Arrow version 2.0 was introduced to the audience, in the form of Wild Dog, a hockey mask-wearing, gun-toting vigilante who was inspired by -- and then shot in the kneecap by -- Green Arrow. The character first appeared in Wild Dog #1 in 1987, making him one of the first new superheroes created following Crisis on Infinite Earths. Created by Road to Perdition writer Max Allan Collins, "his super power is guns." Konstantin Kovar - Konstantin Kovar is the father of Leonid Kovar, better known as Red Star.  In the comics, Konstantin originally wasn't a villain, but a relatively benign figure: an archaeologist who unearthed a nasty bit of business that gave his son powers. But Red Star himself, a loyal communist in the Soviet era, was occasionally a problem for the other heroes before he turned his life around.  Eventually, he would become a bad guy in service of the Soviet Union -- something that might make him an interesting figure going forward in case Anatoly Knyazev's comic book destiny of becoming the cybernetically-enhanced "KGBeast" is to become part of Arrow's story. Tobias Church - Church's nickname is apparently Charon, the ferryman of Hades from Greek mythology. There is a Charon in DC Comics, although he shares basically nothing in common with this version. This is something that will be repeated again in the episode: choosing a historical/mythological meaning instead of a contemporary/comics one. Vigilante - "Mr. Ski Goggles," as Felicity calls him, is actually Vigilante, a DC Comics antihero created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.  Perez provided the police sketch seen on Felicity's computer screen.  Created during Marv Wolfman's time on the New Teen Titans, Vigilante in the comics is a former New York district attorney who's set on the path of justice after hsi family is killed by the mob. The CW describes him similarly: Chase is "Star City's new district attorney and an ally of Mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who aims to clean up the streets through the legal system." Hub City and Bludhaven - According to Detective Malone, before he made his way to Star City, apparently he haunted Hub City -- the home of The Question -- and Bludhaven, the home of Nightwing. Ross Paints - Is that a little bit of free advertising for comic book artist and painter Alex Ross on the side of the truck Tobias Church and his goons are driving to their crime spree? Bertinelli - Whoever the head of the Bertinelli crime family is now that Helena has killed her father, he makes an appearance here -- only to be immediately killed by Tobias Church's men.     ARROW NEWS:   Arrow Showrunner breaks down all those new S5 characters (Date: 05 Oct 2016) Executive producer and showrunner Wendy Mericle gave an in-depth look into some of season 5's new characters in an interview with CBR.com. Included in the interview are discussions about Ragman, Artemis, Wild Dog, and Mr. Terrific. Mericle drops hints about Vigilante and Prometheus. When asked about Katie Cassidy, Mericle says, “Nobody ever really dies on ‘Arrow.' (Date: 05 Oct 2016) Producers have stated that Diggle will be impacted by Flashpoint. On the season premiere, Diggle said he has “the worst case of deja vu ever.” The article speculates that perhaps Diggle's wife and child could be erased. (Date: 05 Oct 2016) com goes into the history of Wild Dog. Covering his first appearance in “Wild Dog #1” in 1987 to his Booster Gold run. Wild Dog was created by Max Allan Collins, who stated that Wild Dog's “super power is guns.” Wild Dog is star athlete Jack Wheeler, who had to become a mechanic after an injury. He became Wild Dog after the woman he loved was gun down. Link:http://comicbook.com/2016/10/06/arrow-season-5-premiere-ratings-released/ Arrow: Stephen Amell talks legacy, Russia, and why Prometheus is the right villain for season 5 (Date: 05  Oct 2016) In an interview with IGN, Stephen Amell discusses season 5. When asked about Prometheus, Stephen said, “ Prometheus is a villain that is a byproduct of Oliver Queen being Green Arrow. That's something that you get to do once you're five years into a show. In a lot of ways, I think the most success that we've had with a villain, in my mind, was with Manu Bennett as Deathstroke. One of the reasons is because we got to tell a really personal story. We got to tell the story, sort of the dueling time of their time on the island and then their time in the Starling City at the time. Because Prometheus is a villain of Oliver's creation, so to speak, I feel like it will bring in that personal element as well.” Link:http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/05/arrow-stephen-amell-talks-legacy-russia-and-why-prometheus-is-the-right-villain-for-season-5   Spartan's new helmet and a Diggle/Oliver-centric episode of Arrow is coming (Date: 02 Oct 2016) Bleeding Cool - Picture of Diggle in his new helmet.
