It's a special free agency edition of the Real Life Podcast, and that meant the boys had to get back on the grind and talk about what happened so far on the first day in free agency.Kicking off the podcast, the guys got started with some of the news and stories they didn't have a chance to get to since the last time everyone was in the same room together. From what they did after Game 7 in Florida to Tyler's hotel room having sewage backing up into the sink, there was a lot to get caught up on after the guys hadn't really done a show together in a while.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the boys started by looking back at Ken Holland's tenure as the team's GM and whether it was a successful five-year run by him. As you'll hear, the guys aren't willing to give Holland as much credit as others. Despite the fact that the Oilers just made it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, no one was saying it was a mission accomplished for Uncle Ken. The discussion then turned to what the Oilers did on the first day of free agency: They locked in Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year deal, Corey Perry to a one-year deal, Josh Brown to a three-year deal, and Connor Carrick to a one-year deal. While it was certainly an eventful day, that doesn't mean everyone was totally on board with what happened. Of the moves the Oilers made, it seems like only Arvidsson gets a passing grade from the squad, but it's noteworthy that everyone agrees they're probably not done. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of the Real Life podcast with a few stories from Tyler about what it was like to cover the draft in Las Vegas at the Sphere. According to Tyler, it was beautiful to look at the Sphere, but it was one of those things that would have been better experienced in a different setting than trying to do work while the walls were moving. Needless to say, it was a long stretch on the road for old man Yaremchuk.

A solo episode with Elisa who shares her insights and own unlearning about running a podcast. You'll hear a review of top quotes from guests and also a preview of what is to come with a new series on Relationships coming soon. “I am unlearning that I always know in the moment what is good or bad. The present is always changing our stories about the past. We have the ability to change the past because we have a different relationship with it, based on our present day." Connor Carrick, Episode 1 “Unlearning is the ultimate act of humility for me. It is the surrender to the fact that everything and everyone is a teacher, and everyone and everything is a student.” Claude Silver, Episode 15 "What I feel when I hear the word unlearning, I feel a relief, a softening, a permission. And, what I think about it is that if we have some intact culture and some experience at all with elder-hood, and what it may be to be near someone who are true elders, or many people or who are true elders, there wouldn't be so much we have to unlearn, we could trust the learning that we did." Kimberly Ann Johnson, Episode 22 "Unlearning in degrees matters." Kate Fagan And, Elisa previews an upcoming episode with Jordan Dann which will be released on June 13th. Do you ever wonder how your brain works? In this episode, we have the privilege of hosting Neurotherapist Dr. Andrew Hill, who graciously guides us through an exploration of cerebral operations. Following our participation in Quantitative EEG "brain mapping," we had the opportunity to interpret the ensuing data in real time during the podcast. Our analysis delves into an array of brain patterns, connections, and states of neural activity. Notably, several of these revelations unveil significant correlations with the daily-life symptoms I encounter and even extend to my athletic performance, all without any prior interaction with Dr. Hill. Our discussion extends to the impact of brain injuries on function, alongside an examination of how brain mapping holds promise for forthcoming athletes. We conclude by addressing pivotal lifestyle factors poised to enhance cognitive capabilities. In the first ever episode for The School of Unlearning podcast, I sit down with my friend and NHL Defenseman, Connor Carrick. We traverse childhood, pro sports in the NHL and Connor reveals what he believes to be the secret weapon for the next generation of athletes. This episode is special to me as it bridges the gap between sports and spirituality, a less talked about gift that comes with playing team sports. Connor nudges us to curb our ego, shares his tips on how to settle into the present moment and stop pretending to be someone we really aren't. After 9 seasons in the NHL, Connor finally "lets his shoulders drop", a reminder he uses on the ice to help him tap into flow state so that he can play his best hockey. I have a sneaky feeling that whether you play pro sports or not, this episode will empower you to redefine success and find agency in your life. In this episode you'll hear: How growing up as the oldest of 3 boys influenced and shaped Connor's sense of success How to move from "force to flow" How Connor embraces the spiritual side of the game and what that means for him How pretending/posturing is an energy drain How athletes struggle to balance the highs of the sympathetic and the mundane of the parasympathetic in sports The power of granting yourself permission to show up fully and lead Where the best version of you lives Connor's definition of unlearning and finding agency If you loved this episode with Connor Carrick, click here to learn/hear more from him. Connor is on Instagram @connorcarrick and has his own podcasted called, "The Curious Competitor" which can be found on iTunes and Spotify. Wait til you hear about our NFL ring ceremony concept...Jonah is back in from his Fresh year of college and contributes in a big way. Maria can best be described as mildly bemused and tolerant as the guys propose the following:1) What would you do if you had the Stanley Cup for a day?2) A total reimagining of the NFL Super Bowl ring ceremony. What if NFL Super Bowl rings were turned over every year like the Stanley Cup? 50 yard line, previous winners line up across from new winners and (Benny Hill theme starts playing) each player has to find another one to wear his ring.Would there be Red Carpet event fan overlap for the Super Bowl if there was a week long leadup with players discussing the rings, their potential outfits for the ceremony and who their potential targets might be?If this sounds to you like it might be a terrible idea, maybe you need to ask yourself this question: “If Elvis Grbac, 1994 Michigan Wolverines starting QB, thinks its a great idea...is it possible that maybe I’m the one missing the point?”*If you are an NFL athlete or know an NFL athlete, please explain to us why or how you think this will be successful and who to contact to make it work.*To date, Elvis Grbac is definitely unaware of this idea and may or may not think it’s a good idea. Please visit us at https://thetragedyacademy.com On social media, you can find us at @thetragedyacademypodcast on Instagram, The Tragedy Academy Podcast on Facebook, and @tragedy_academy on Twitter. Every team at twenty is a way better team at forty.” (19:06) “I play a sport that, if you ask any GM, any coach, any player for that matter, what percentage of the game is mental, you’re not gonna get a percentage lower than eighty.” (23:57) “I think athletics puts you uniquely in touch with that because you know you can go sprint and run as fast as you can or jump as high as you want. On this episode of the Hockey Think Tank podcast, we bring on current NHL player Connor Carrick! Connor grew up in Chicago and then played his junior days at the US National Development Program. We talk about the ups and downs of playing there, and then we go into Connor's choice to play in the OHL, where he played for AHL Calder Cup winning coach Mike Vellucci, and what it was like to play for him. Connor was extremely open and candid about the game we love and where he sees it right now, the all-so-important coach athlete relationship, and ways to better yourself on and off the ice...especially as a defenseman. Connor is a great ambassador for our game, and this was an incredibly insightful conversation! Thanks again to everyone for tuning in! *Opening music: Forget the Whale - Take to the Skies (Instrumental)
