We also discuss the hero who saved a little kid from a wayward hockey puck at a Lake Erie Monsters game. Did you know that Rhode Island native, David Quinn, is an American ice hockey coach and former player?. He is the former head coach of the New York Rangers and was the former head coach of the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL, an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, and the head men's hockey coach at Boston University. Now, we turn our feature story…. A state investigation that brought together 36 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and led to charges against 23 individuals who have all since been found guilty for various roles in an organized drug-distribution ring was recognized this week with a national Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces award. The U.S. Department of Justice recognized 10 individuals with the OCDETF honor. The recipients included personnel with the U.S. Postal Service, Pembroke, Massachusetts Police Departments, the Rhode Island State Police, Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Attorney's office. Among those who received recognition were Richard Atwood, James Burns, Mario Cerullo, Kristopher Dees, Daniel Hernandez, Alexander Koumanelis, Sam Masiello, Andrea Metz, Michael Rusciano and Lindsay Beltzer. U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Cunha said: “I am pleased to see the team deservedly recognized with this award. This award is a testament to two things: the results that flow from effective coordination among our law enforcement partners, and the commitment of those agencies to dismantle and disrupt significant drug trafficking in our state and region,”  Cunha said in a news release that the eight-month Project Safe Neighborhoods investigation, dubbed “Operation Panamera,” relied on the combined expertise of different Rhode Island police units and task forces, whose joint work dismantled a drug-trafficking organization that imported hundreds of kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine from Mexico and Puerto Rico and redistributed them to drug dealers in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont. The investigation culminated in the seizure of 13 kilograms of fentanyl, 11 kilograms of cocaine, 11 kilograms of marijuana and two kilograms of psychedelic mushrooms. In addition, law enforcement also seized $60,000 in cash, 10 vehicles and a handgun. All 23 individuals charged, including several from the greater Providence area, have since been judged guilty in the U.S. District Court in Providence and sentenced to federal prison. Educated in the Westerly schools, a graduate of Tabor Academy and URI, Nicholas was commissioned a 2nd Lt of Infantry from ROTC at URI. He served as an infantry officer and then as an air defense artillery officer in the 197th Infantry Brigade from 1971 until 1974 at which time he left active service as a lieutenant and joined the reserves. Upon return to Westerly, he joined his father at The Westerly Sun and The Utter Co. as manager of Sun Graphics becoming co-publisher of The Westerly Sun. His service to the community was demonstrated in his dedication as past president of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce and the Westerly Lions Club, as a board member of the Westerly Hospital, and as a member of the Westerly Economic Development Committee. He was a member of the Watch Hill Yacht Club and his beloved Low Cleveland Poker Group. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, two sons and daughter, brothers, and five grandchildren. In this episode, Fred Pletsch and I catch up and chat with longtime pro hockey goalie, Jason Bacashihua of Dearborn Heights, MI. Cash, as he's known in the hockey world, was a 1st round pick of the Dallas Stars, (26th overall), in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. In his teen years, Cash played for the Chicago Freeze in the NAHL, Fred was the commissioner of the NAHL then, so they had some great conversation about that part of Cash's hockey journey. After 2 seasons in Chicago, Cash then played for 1 season in the OHL with the Plymouth Whalers before he was drafted in the 1st round. In 2001, the year he was drafted, he embarked on his pro career, we discuss that, his 1st NHL call up, some of the players and teams he played with and on, his journey through pro hockey, including his stints with the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL, a place Cash and I met, I was the team broadcaster there. We also chat with Cash about his journey, that started in 2012, in Europe as a pro, plus, where he was when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and what it was like for him to get back to the U.S. during that time, and so much more in this episode!!

In this episode we catch up with Grand Rapids Griffins Captain/Forward Matt Ford. I first met Matt in Cleveland when he was playing for the Lake Erie Monsters and I was the team broadcaster, in fact as Matt tells Fred Pletsch and I in this episode, his time w/Lake Erie was big in his development as a pro hockey player. Matt starts from the beginning with us as he tells us the story of his grandfather moving his family from Toronto to Southern California and Matt's first memories of hockey and how he started to play as a kid. In his teen years he would attend Shattuck St. Mary's School in Minnesota, a program that has helped produce dozens of players that have gone on to play college and pro hockey. From Shattuck, Matt attended the University of Wisconsin and was part of their 2006 NCAA Title team, he discusses that, and one teammate who helped teach him more about the game. Matt's pro hockey career started in 2008 with Charlotte, in 2009-11 he played for Lake Erie, leading our team with 26 goals in his 2nd season & was a part of our late season run to the Calder Cup playoffs! Matt has been with Grand Rapids since 2016, later that season, the Griffins would hoist the Calder Cup as AHL Champions. Matt is 35, and he's now showing the younger players in the Detroit Red Wings organization what it takes to be a pro player, all while still playing the game he loves!!!

Outstanding time chatting and catching up with NY Rangers Head Coach David Quinn who had his team in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs before COVID-19 shutdown the sports world. Quinn is in his 2nd season as the Rangers head coach, after being the head coach at his alma mater, Boston University. Prior to returning home to BU, Quinn was an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche, after spending 3 seasons at the head coach of the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL. Quinn and I met in Lake Erie, where was the radio/TV broadcaster for 2 seasons. We chatted about the AHL days, his current team in New York, and much more! Was a lot of fun to have my son Luke on the podcast with me, Quinn had not seen or talked with my son in 9 years, was pretty cool to have him now asking questions to the Rangers head coach.
