Retraining social media habits to stop being an 'internet artist', with Julian Glander

Creative Boom

Social media has come a long way over the last two decades. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter weren't just great places to connect with others; they became how we built our creative businesses, found clients, and promoted our work. But all good things must come to an end. Profits and shareholders inevitably entered the fray, twisting algorithms and features upside down. We've spent much time and effort chasing likes and clicks until we became exhausted, disengaged, and ready to try anything to market ourselves other than fire out another update. Perhaps we're going through a shift again, as this week's guest might allude. Julian Glander is a Pittsburgh-based multidisciplinary artist who grew his reputation and business online but is now redefining his relationship with social networks. As a self-described "Internet artist", he admits he's trying to break or retrain his social media habits and find ways to use his time online more productively and intentionally. This new approach played a big part in developing his new film, Boys Go to Jupiter – a fantastical coming-of-age story that he has self-financed and put together with a small team over the last few years. The movie tells the story of a teenage delivery driver in suburban Florida whose life is turned topsy-turvy by the arrival of a mysterious and adorable creature from another world. It's been a real labour of love and, by far, the most ambitious and demanding thing he's ever worked on. To get it done, though, he had to pull lessons from his experiences in many different fields: illustration, video games, music, and animation. But he also made the best use of the web, calling upon his social networks to cast and recruit almost every voice actor in this film, including Joe Pera, Sarah Sherman and Elsie Fisher. He's even embraced TikTok and found success there, making new contacts and finding fresh inspiration. As our online habits continue to change, we wanted to find out how one successful artist is adapting and embracing what seems to be a new era of social media and how we might follow suit. While some fans of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre made their way over to Netflix for the new film, the ride or die fans sauntered over to Amazon Prime. Why? Because they have Night Court… featuring John Larroquette. That joke doesn't really land, since he narrated this sequel too, but seriously, you should watch Night Court. This was originally meant to be an episode where the hosts simply talked about movies in their collections that they hated or at the very least disliked. Then Ade popped in to say hi, and we realized that we had all seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre by David Blue Garcia, so we did an episode on it. The director, aside from being the guy in the Eiffel 65 music video, has a very limited resume. If any of you have seen Tejano, please let us know because it is not streaming for free and $3 is a lot of money compared to our numbers on Patreon… eesh… but hey on that topic—did you know we have a Patreon? *nudge nudge* The film must have been well received, because in the weeks since its release, Fede Alvarez was announced to be part of the next Alien installment. If you want to know how iconic that franchise is, keep in mind that I just used a general term for extraterrestrial and you knew exactly what franchise. Let me tell you, no one thinks of Soldier with Kurt Russel whenever you use that word… even if it is in the Blade Runner universe. Seriously, it is. Look it up. This film stars Sarah Yarkin plays Melody. No, she is not a musician from what I can tell. What I mean to say is that she plays the character Melody. Her sister, Lila, is played by Elsie Fisher. Mark Burnham, guy without a Wikipedia page, plays Leatherface. Moe Dunford pays the panty-moistening, Richter, whom Ade and Mikey both had strong feelings for. The Borg Queen, Alice Krige, stops by for a cup of coffee in the movie, delivering a very memorable moment. What did you think of the film? How did it compare to the rest of the sequels, prequels, and requels in the franchise? Pplease let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Leatherface is back in what is apparently the ninth installment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. This "requel" does away with all the sequels and brings back the legacy characters of Leatherface, Sally Hardesty (the lone survivor from the first one), and the voice of John Larroquette as the narrator. The film didn't feel like Texas and was in fact shot in Bulgaria. While certainly grisly, we'll let you know how it holds up to the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). The 83-minute Netflix film stars Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Olwen Fouere, Jacob Latimore, and Alice Krige.

It's here - our FIRST review! We watched Netflix's new Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 3rd film in history to have that title) as our inaugural movie and some may say it's a doozy. David Blue Garcia's slasher is the latest entry in the long lineage of Texas Chainsaw Massacre films and the series' 4th attempt at a reboot in the 21st century. Trying to capitalize off of other "requels" like Halloween and Scream, this Texas Chainsaw Massacre brings back original Final Girl Sally Hardesty alongside Elsie Fisher (of Eighth Grade fame) and Sarah Yarkin as sisters in a group of influencers trying to gentrify the hometown of one Bubba Sawyer AKA Leatherface. *SPOILER ALERT!!! WE WILL BE DISUCSSING TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE IN DEPTH, INCLUDING WHO DIES AND WHO SURVIVES*Sequels are an important part of horror. While that do not always work out (and eventually end up diluting the source material), they are one of the determining factors of success in the genre. In recent years, legacy sequels have become increasingly popular. One of the big marketing themes around Texas Chainsaw Massacre was how it was a direct sequel to the 1974 original. We discuss reboot versus sequel and try to figure out what the latest installment in the franchise was going for.We also talk about popular ideas in horror. Reality versus the supernatural and white science versus Black magic are often seen, but the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies have always been about the city versus the country. This was a big part of the latest installment, but did it amount to anything more than jabs at Austin and modern society? Was the movie genuinely trying to make a statement or was it all a joke?Unlike the original, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a gory movie. We talk about the kills in the movie and whether it was too much. We also talk about what the film means for Fede Alavarez and how the film is indebted to horror movies of the past. Plus, talks about homages, sequels, and final girls.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. MOVIE DISCUSSION: No better way for content creators to return than to complain about things they don't like! Join Melvin and Daniel as they tear into the latest entry in the Texas Chainsaw franchise!Topics: Melvin and Daniel are not massive fans of the Texas Chainsaw franchise, but for different reasons. However, they both like the 1974 film, with it being one of Melvin's top 4 films (as of recording).Discussing the production behind the Texas Chainsaw franchise, as well as Fede Alvarez who produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre. How Fede Alvarez in particular produces visually transgressive/squeamish horror films that have just enough heart and soul to make their wild, extreme content bearable. And, how something must have gone wrong in the process of making Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Before even getting into the episode proper, we both don't recommend Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't hold a candle to the violence and gore within a few other movies Melvin has watched this year (and really enjoyed!), but the violence and gore within Texas Chainsaw Massacre is so nasty and mean-spirited that it made him physically upset.Melvin shares the few, limited things he enjoyed about Texas Chainsaw Massacre.Daniel explains the outright bizarre storyline and "mixed mess of things" within Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The whole movie is so strange that we went 50 minutes without talking about a massive plot point.Pitching pizza commercials featuring Bubba. We definitely don't recommend Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But we definitely do recommend The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for a myriad of reasons.Recommendations: KJV Reformation Heritage Study BibleTill Death Do Us Blart (Podcast)Archive 81 (Show)Support on Patreon for Unique Perks! Early access to uncut episodes Vote on a movie/show we review Social Links: TikTok Twitter Website Facebook Group Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/CinematicDoctrine)
