On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 25 at 6:45 a.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees has warned that without immediate deliveries of fuel it will soon have to sharply cut back relief operations across the Gaza Strip. The territory has been blockaded and hit by devastating Israeli airstrikes since Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel more than two weeks ago. The warning came as hospitals in Gaza struggled to treat masses of wounded with dwindling resources. Health officials in the Hamas-ruled territory also said the death toll was soaring as Israeli jets continued striking the territory overnight into Wednesday. The Israeli military said its strikes hit Hamas targets. ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Otis has slammed into Mexico's southern Pacific coast as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, bringing 165 mph winds and heavy rain to Acapulco and nearby towns. Otis rapidly intensified Tuesday, growing from a tropical storm to a Category 5 monster in 12 hours. The storm then quickly weakened to a Category 4 shortly after making landfall with its maximum sustained winds decreasing to 130 mph. The hurricane is expected to continue to weaken quickly in Guerrero state's steep mountains. But the 5 to 10 inches of rain forecast, with as much as 15 inches possible in some areas, raises the threat of landslides and floods. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have chosen congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana as their latest nominee for House speaker. Johnson will face a floor vote Wednesday trying to unify the divided Republican majority. Johnson is the fourth candidate Republicans have nominated to replace Kevin McCarthy. Johnson's nomination came just hours after an earlier pick, congressman Tom Emmer of Minnesota, dropped out amid opposition from Donald Trump. The Republican majority has been without a speaker for three weeks and is desperate to end the chaos and get back to work. Johnson had no opposition on a private tally, but many were absent. Johnson will need almost all Republicans to win the gavel in a floor vote. BANGKOK (AP) — China said the United States is the “biggest disruptor of regional peace and stability” in the world in a scathing response to a Pentagon report on China's growing military buildup. The annual report that is required by Congress is one way the Pentagon measures the military capabilities of China, which the U.S. government sees as its key threat in the Asia-Pacific region and America's primary long-term security challenge. The statement China's Ministry of Defense issued in response early Wednesday morning called the Pentagon report's findings false and used it in turn to hit back at the U.S.′ recent actions in helping Israel and Ukraine, as well as its buildup of military installations worldwide. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Roundtree, the trailblazing actor for Black filmmakers who starred as the ultra-smooth private detective in the 1971 action movie “Shaft” and several sequels, has died. He was 81. Roundtree's longtime manager, Patrick McMinn, says the actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday. He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy. Roundtree was considered as the “first Black action hero” and became one of the leading actors in the blaxploitation genre through his New York street smart John Shaft character in the Gordon Parks-directed film. At age 28, it was Roundtree's feature film debut after starting his career as a model. The Diamondbacks end their two-plus decade World Series drought, the defending champion Nuggets raise a banner and beat the Lakers, Kevin Durant helps the Suns win in his Phoenix debut, and the Kraken rally for an overtime victory against the Red Wings. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Health Ministry in Gaza says hundreds of people were killed in the past day as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Israel has been striking Gaza since Hamas militants attacked southern Israeli towns on Oct. 7. Israel said Tuesday it had launched 400 airstrikes over the past day, killing Hamas commanders, hitting militants as they were preparing to launch rockets into Israel and striking command centers and a Hamas tunnel shaft. The Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, said more than 700 people were killed in the past day, a claim that AP could not independently verify. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have picked Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota as their nominee for House speaker, but there's no guarantee he can win the gavel. In fact, Republicans are no closer to ending the bitter infighting as Donald Trump and hard-liners have rejected the choice. As the GOP whip, Emmer jumped out front in private balloting Tuesday as the top vote-getter among the hodgepodge list of mostly lesser-known congressmen. He won a simple majority of his colleagues behind closed doors but fell far short of the support of almost all Republicans he would need during a House floor vote ahead. It's been three weeks since Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy as speaker. ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump's lead attorney in the 2020 Georgia election case against him is using another attorney's guilty plea to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the racketeering charges brought against all 19 defendants. Trump attorney Steve Sadow says it's the fourth time Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has dismissed the racketeering charge “in return for a plea to probation." Attorney Jenna Ellis pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony over efforts to overturn Trump's election loss in Georgia. The Florida resident is the fourth defendant in the case to enter into a plea deal with prosecutors. Prosecutors say Ellis helped other lawyers as they lied to Georgia lawmakers. WASHINGTON (AP) — A powerful Haitian gang leader has been charged by U.S. prosecutors with ordering the kidnapping of an American couple, which left a woman dead. The U.S. attorney's office for the District of Columbia announced a new indictment Tuesday against Vitel'Homme Innocent, the leader of the Kraze Barye gang, in connection with the October 2022 kidnapping in Haiti of Jean Franklin and Marie Odette Franklin. Marie Franklin was shot and killed in the kidnapping. Jean Franklin was held for 21 days. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his arrest. He was previously charged in connection to the 2021 kidnappings of Christian missionaries. Dozens of US states, including California, New York, Arizona and Indiana are suing Meta Platforms Inc. for harming young people's mental health and contributing the youth mental health crisis by knowingly designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to the platforms. The lawsuit filed in federal court in California also claims that Meta routinely collects data on children under 13 without their parents' consent, in violation of federal law. DETROIT (AP) — A strike by autoworkers against General Motors is expected to cut the automaker's pretax earnings by $800 million this year, and another $200 million per week after that. That's according to the company's chief financial officer. And those figures just include factories that are on strike now by the United Auto Workers union. So if more plants are added, the losses will pile up further, CFO Paul Jacobson told reporters. His statements came as GM reported Tuesday just over $3 billion in net income from July through September, a figure that was 7% below a year ago due to lost production from the strike and increased warranty costs. But the results soundly beat Wall Street estimates. NEW YORK (AP) — A new shot for infants against RSV is in short supply, and U.S. health officials are telling doctors they should prioritize giving the drug to babies at the highest risk of severe disease. The one-time shot is called Beyfortus. It was developed by AstraZeneca and Sanofi. It contains a lab-made antibody that helps the immune system fight off the virus. RSV is a common cause of coldlike symptoms, but it can be dangerous for young children. A seasonal virus, it's already widely reported in the southern United States and is expected to continue to spread over the next month or two. Georgetown women's basketball coach Tasha Butts has died after a two-year battle with breast cancer. The 41-year-old coach was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer in 2021. She stepped away from coaching Georgetown last month. Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed announced Butts' death on Monday. Her diagnosis inspired the Tasha Tough campaign which has brought awareness and raised money to bring quality care to women who can't afford it through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Butts came to Georgetown from Georgia Tech this past April after a long coaching and professional WNBA career. Reigning AP national player of the year Zach Edey is a unanimous selection on The Associated Press preseason All-America team in college basketball. The big man tested the NBA waters before deciding to play one more season for No. 3 Purdue. Edey is joined by Marquette guard Tyler Kolek, Kansas center Hunter Dickinson, Duke big man Kyle Filipowski and North Carolina forward Armando Bacot. Edey was the consensus national player of the year last season after averaging 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds while shooting nearly 61% from the field. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. This week on The Final Straw Radio, we spoke with Dylan and Enzo of Unity & Struggle. Unity & Struggle, or U&S, is an anti-state communist collective spread across the so-called US. Their members publish essays and engage in local organizing activities. Enzo recently authored a short essay entitled “How Do We Stop A Coup” which had editorial contribution by the wider U&S collective. For the hour, we talk about the threat of a “Constitutional Coup”, the importance of street action and organizing among the working classes to resist authoritarianism and ideas about fighting recuperation by Liberal power structures like the Democrat party. More by U&S, including this essay, can be found at UnityAndStruggle.Org. You can find a mini series of podcasts with Unity & Struggle talking about their study group on Race over 5 parts starting in November of 2019 on RevLeft Radio. You can also find a recent interview with members of U&S entitled “Organizing In The Face of Crisis and Far-Right Terror” on the same topic as our discussion on ItsGoingDown's IGDcast. . … . .. This Monday, October 26th there will be a march in Lincoln, Nebraska at the State Capitol at 14th & K from 11:30 am– 3:30 pm in support of the review of the wrongful conviction, and eventual release of, Ed Poindexter. Mr. Poindexter is the surviving member of the Omaha 2 who, along with Wopashitwe Mondo Eyen we Langa (whose state name was David Rice), were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 1971 murder of Omaha Police Officer Larry Minard on August 17th, 1971. The two were suspects before there was any evidence in the case because they were leaders of the National Committee to Combat Fascism, a splinter from the Black Panther Party. Despite shoddy investigation and signs of evidence tampering by authorities, an appeal to the conviction based on new evidence that surfaced in the case of the Omaha 2 was denied in 2010 by the Nebraska Supreme Court due to limitations imposed by Clinton's 1996 Effective Death Penalty and Anti-Terrorism Act, a law mentioned by Cinque Magee in our last episode. The Nebraska Board of Pardons will be meeting Monday afternoon and supporters are invited to participate in a public comment period at the end from 4-5pm (depending on the length of the hearings). Mondo died in prison of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on March 11, 2016, after being incarcerated from age 23 to 69. Ed has diabetes and had triple bipass heart surgery in 2016. He is confined to a wheelchair and cataracts that limit his ability to read. He did not deserve this treatment and needs to be released after 49 years on a wrongful conviction. If Ed Poindexter is not pardoned, we hope to speak soon with supporters of him about his case. Meanwhile you can get involved and support him by visiting the fedbook page entitled Freedom4Ed (with the number 4). You can also contact them at freedom4ed@gmail.com You can write to Ed, whose 76th birthday is coming up on November 1st, at: Edward Poindexter #27767 Nebraska State Penitentiary P.O. On this episode, it's all music, except for a clip from an interview with Kuwasi Balagoon, an anarchist and member of the Black Liberation Army. Most of the tracks here are from the past year, including a few anarchist rap tracks from the US and some new underground tracks from Indonesia. We've also got a couple songs by Palabras En Conflicto, the rap group that Sebastían 'Angry' Oversluij was a member of. Angry was a nihilist-anarchist who was killed by a security guard during an attempted bank robbery in Dec 2013. His death was recently commemorated by high school students in Santiago, Chile (see the photo that goes with the episode). We also feature a track by Nepalese anarcho-punk band Rai Ko Ris. In today's episode of the solecast I sit down with Frank Lopez to discuss Submedia's new film in their ongoing Trouble series, “And You Don't Stop.” And You Don't Stop is a documentary about radical hip-hop as done by grass roots activists. Its an excellent look on hip-hop's roots, its evolution and highlights some artists that are doing amazing work today. In our conversation we talk about: -Hip-hop rising from the failures of -Neoliberalism in the South Bronx -The rise of the Zulu Nation -The importance of aesthetics -The role music can play in social movements -Public Enemy and some of Franks favorite artists of the 80s/90s -Combatting sexism in Rap -What rap can learn from punk and why we need to build up a network of radical hip hop based social centers Frank also goes in depth talking about the artists he highlights in the documentary, the work they do and their music. Trouble #15: And You Don't Stop It's often said that hip hop is more than just a type of music…. it's a way of life. A code, a set of practices, an aesthetic and a way of handling yourself. And despite the efforts of industry executives to commodify it and strip it of its subversive potential, hip hop remains a lifestyle firmly rooted in the daily struggles faced by oppressed peoples around the world. It is a weapon, masquerading as culture. In this month's episode of Trouble, subMedia explores hip hop as a potent site of revolutionary politics, drawing on the first-hand knowledge and experiences of some of Turtle Island's baddest grassroots emcees: Ant Loc, Mic Crenshaw, La Marea, Sima Lee, Lee Reed and Mare. Just a heads up that some of the dialogue in the film is in Spanish, so for English speakers we recommend turning on the subtitles by clicking CC on the video player, and/or downloading the SRT file – particularly if you plan on using a hard copy of the video for screening purposes. As a bonus, The Stimulator brings us a very special sedition of Burning Cop Car, featuring the music of the emcees we interviewed for Trouble #15. Click here to check it out.

We return to the rising wave of renters struggles across the province of Ontario. On May 1st, tenants in the Stoney Creek Towers in Hamilton declared a rent strike, demanding that their corporate landlord drop an above-guideline rent increase of almost 10% over three years, and that the property managers perform numerous needed overdue repairs to their units. I first interviewed Jason of the Hamilton Tenants Solidarity Network back in May. The HTSN helped initiate the rent strike and works to support tenant self-organization and struggle across the city of Hamilton, and increasingly in coordination with like-minded groups across Ontario. In this follow-up interview we discuss the East Hamilton Rent Strike as it enters its fifth month. The second interview in this episode is with a tenant organizer in the neighbourhood of Herongate in Ottawa, where another massive real estate company is attempting to conduct the largest urban eviction campaign in Canada, after having bought up a literal quarter of the neighbourhood. But the residents of Herongate aren't going to leave without a fight. All the music tonight is by Lee Reed, who actually just released an EP to fundraise for the rent strike - check it out! The audio clip at the end is Ikram Dahir, a resident of Herongate. It is part of a series of resident statements collected by Neal Rockwell.
Scott and Greg continue with the topic Why Canada Sucks with a discussion on the links between Climate Change, racism, and imperialism. Over the last several weeks there have been a number of racists attacks in Canada. Xenophobic rhetoric is on the rise as Canadian media play into a bogus "border crisis" narrative and the Liberals appoint Bill Blair (former police chief of Toronto who has a horrible record on civil liberties) as their new Minister of Border Security and Organized which has only emboldened the far right. Scott and Greg talk about all this in context of climate change and imperialism, how Canada is on the wrong side of these issues and why we are just seeing the start of refugees seeking asylum in Canada. To solve these issues we can't frame them as consumer choices but rather in political and economic choices. Scott and Greg also talk about gentrification and the replacing of "unwanted" people and how cities are becoming unaffordable. Show Notes Music break brought you by Lee Reed. His latest "The Steal City" ep is all about gentrification in Hamilton. 100% of proceeds to the Hamilton Tenants Solidarity Network (HTSN) and the East Hamilton Rent Strike Defense Fund. https://htsn.bandcamp.com/releases https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-former-toronto-police-chief-bill-blair-takes-charge-of-canadas/ http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/views-expressed/2015/11/why-canadians-should-be-worried-if-trudeau-appoints-bill-blai https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/man-confronts-muslim-family-toronto-ferry-terminal-viral-1.4761908 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/hate-is-alive-here-wife-of-beaten-mississauga-man-speaks-out-after-attack-1.4751217 http://rankandfile.ca/organizing-against-racist-attacks-in-your-workplace/ https://www.afsc.org/resource/dos-and-donts-bystander-intervention
