Cocktails at Home - Crawfish Omelets - Beyond Beef - Outrage Culture - Chicken, Kale and White Bean Soup - Who's Quirky? A $15 martini proves, yet again, that we can do it better at home. Add the loss of a beer partner and our craft cocktail-at-home game has been rising. Our exploration of the world of plant-based meat rabbit holes into chickens-in-the-mail, empty beef shelves and fake chicken nuggets. It remains to be seen if VCs are ready to shift their focus to do the same. There’s a reason to expect criticism: Paul and Rich dig into the newest article from VC Marc Andreessen. In it, Andreessen exhorts Americans to innovate and blames our lack of preparation for the pandemic on a lack of desire to do so. We reflect on the current state of America and how apparent the holes in our social governance have become since COVID-19 (especially the education system). Is there a world where VC and startups can help us improve these old systems? Has social policy towards more privatization led us towards the wrong things being optimized? We look to other innovations that have come from crises and ask: How can you install that startup-style motivation outside of commercial profit? (Spoiler: Marc Andreessen doesn’t have the answer!) The applause from your speech may have faded, but the connection you make with your audience doesn't have to. Engaging online can help you deepen and broaden your audience relationship, while building a growing network that may become one of your most valuable assets: your platform. Links: It's been a few years since Platform by Michael Hyatt came out. It may not include the latest news on social networks and mobile engagement, but the principles will still be sound years from now. Strongly recommended. There are newer books, but this is the one I keep coming back to. Cliff Atkinson's The Backchannel is nearly a decade old and a lot has changed; I'd love to see him revisit it. But he has some excellent advice on engagement specifics, including handling the Twitter backchannel during your presentation (which I didn't touch on in this episode — it was already the longest yet!) By the way, Cliff is the author of the utterly essential Beyond Bullet Points. And here's my blog post for speechwriters on how to call on your social network to help you craft your next opus. Everyone's talking about Kanye's nutty meeting with Trump in The Oval Office last week; whilst Melania, in her most frank televised interview yet, described herself as the most bullied person in the world. Meanwhile, Fendi has made a £750 scarf which looks like a vulva (transcendental experience of being ‘born again' presumably baked in to the price), the Duchess of Sussex is having a baby and we discuss the juiciest tidbits of the 850-guest royal wedding that we both, accidentally, got really quite into. Also this week we discuss why 1/3 of Gen Z don't drink (and interview two Gen Z authors Scarlett Curtis and Charly Cox about their differing attitudes to alcohol) and some brilliant pieces of journalism this weekend by Josh Glancy and Max Hastings, that discuss how feelings have trumped rational thought. Let's be real: sometimes people say stupid things. I mean, we don't, but some people do. In this Superhero Friday episode, Tony joins Brian to talk about some of those situations in which we're confronted with a need to start a conversation in an uncertain environment. Since we live in an uber sensitive environment in which everything we say has the potential to offend someone, how do we go about having small talk with people we just met? In This Episode March Maaaaaadness Pet cancer is real and getting realerer Taking care of your pet(s) Awkward introductionss... ...topics to talk about with people you just met Really dog?!? We can't control how other people choose to engage in small talk, but we can manage our own approach. Tony and Brian get heavy into different options for starting up conversations with people we've just met or don't know well, that can help us avoid awkwardness of offense or bringing up sensitive topics, so instead I want to dive into the other side of this. Since we can only control ourselves, we can make adjustments to handling introductory conversations. We can select questions, take a different approach, try to make people feel at ease. But we cannot control how other people choose to approach small talk. I wrote at the top of the blog that culture, as a whole, has become increasingly sensitive to comments people make, to such a degree that it sometimes seems better not to talk to anyone than to talk to someone and fear saying the wrong thing. The conversations that may seem innocuous to us are sensitive to others, and vice versa. The things we think will be fun will be uninteresting or annoying to someone else. It happens all the time. There isn't a way to avoid it entirely (unless you become a hermit and only talk to frogs... but even then you'd better be careful, they make look happy but that's only because they eat whatever bugs them). So the best we can do is learn to control our own responses. I can have terrible reactions to things, and the reaction is almost never due to just what was said but of mounting stressors that precede whatever information I just got causing me to react badly. I was reading a little from Jerome Kagan recently, specifically about the three general categories of child temperaments, and I was surprised (and not surprised) to realize that we all tend to revert back to our child-like temperament under stress. Without honing our reactions, we are all a bunch of babies. Be excellent to one another! My challenge to you, and to me, this next week is to not make anyone feel bad for asking a question that they couldn't possibly know is a sensitive topic to us. Rise above and treat them with respect and kindness. Let's change the way we react, and change the way we converse! (David Attenborough speaking.) "The grizzled male turtle slowly peaks his scarred head out of his weathered shell. He knows danger may await, yet his need to do right by others compels him to take this time honored risk. It's a risk others like him have braved since the dawn of personal development pioneers, in order to reach great heights of achievement, while helping millions transform their lives for the better. For the sake of us all, we wish him much success." And I feel Sir David really nailed it there Holy shit. How egotistical was all that? But it really helps sell a concept hearing it told in his voice. I'm just trying to make a point. The world needs all of us to overcome our shit as quickly as possible Timeframes to successful conclusions will vary. Just know you need to start trying, looking, seeking. To not start is to court death. There is no middle ground in life. Holding still is an illusion, masking the lack of growth (death) that it really is. And in this case, what's dying is the embryonic fully formed version of you. The you that can bring you the life of your dreams. You must start questioning why you do (or don't do) anything the way you've currently chosen. Listen quietly for your answers. Pay attention to any responses that seem truly outside your norms. Then carefully, yet boldly, start down those new paths and see where they take you This is how you not only end up doing life better, you'll start feeling better. As you feel better, you'll begin to want to share what you've learned with others. This will create new problems, causing you to restart the whole "WTF am I doing?" process all over again but at a higher level! And your light, the one that helps not only you find your way but also the ones who end up following you, just gets brighter and brighter. The added light will illuminate worlds that were always right in front of you but up til now remained invisible. Prepare yourself for all that and be excited about it. Our genre this month (Religious Fiction) demands we take a look at what makes a book count as "religious fiction" (instead of just fiction about religion). Plus in our one hour and 48 minute episode, Meghan reads too many books (as usual), Amanda explains Sex Magicks, Matthew makes terrible jokes, and Anna fails to finish anything. How fast can the fastest human being run?  We know that Usain Bolt of Jamacia ran at a top speed of  27.78 miles per hour (44.72 km/h) between the 60 to 80 meter segment of the 100 meter sprint in 1.61 seconds on August 16th, 2009 at the Berlin World Championships.   But what I want to know, is how fast could the fastest human being ever really run.  I’m not talking about Usain...the guy is amazing...but we are human beings, and we have evolved with this particular physicolgy.  What would it take for one of us to run the fastest that is possible as a member of our species? It turns out that, according to the latest science, there are two contending factors which affect the speed of human beings: first the amount of force that our bodies can handle as we smash our limbs upon the ground, and second the speed at which our muscles can contract and pull on our tendons.  Only one of these is the primary factor, and it will become obvious as we go through the science which matters most. We need to consider the mechanics here to come up with a theoretical limit to human speed, and as we do you need to keep Usain Bolt’s 28 miles per hour in mind. This is an episode about the theoretical limits to the speed of a human being. The answer to “How Fast Can We Run”, as a species, may surprise you!
