In 2006, Paige Mycoskie walked into one of the most exclusive boutiques in LA, wearing her handmade clothes and hoping to get a meeting with the buyer. And why not? On the street, people seemed to love her boldly striped shirts and sweats, always asking “Where can I get that?” whenever she wore them. Three years later, Paige opened her first store in Venice Beach, and then she relied on word of mouth – and shrewd negotiating tactics with landlords – to launch more new locations. Despite early struggles with managing her team and an onerous trademark battle with Adidas, Paige grew Aviator Nation into a multi-million dollar brand - that still makes all its clothes in California. This episode was produced by Alex Cheng with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research from Rommel Wood. Our engineer was Josephine Nyounai. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Fan vom Literatursenf? When Paige Mycoskie launched 15-year-old fashion brand Aviator Nation, she was looking to solve her own pain point. “I was most excited to wear vintage clothing -- stuff that was made in the '70s and early '80s. And so I found myself looking for clothes at flea markets and thrift stores. But it's not easy to find good T-shirts from the '70s,” she said on the latest Glossy Podcast. “I'd spend a whole day looking for one T-shirt. Then it dawned on me: ‘Why don't I learn how to make this?' So I started sewing clothes for myself and I taught myself how to screenprint within a couple of weeks.”  That led to a buyer from Fred Segal placing a hefty order, solely based on the shirt that was on Mycoskie's back. And the brand took off from there. In the last year, with staying home being the norm, the level of comfort that comes with wearing a vintage-inspired T-shirt has been in demand. Brands have been adjusting their product offerings accordingly, which has meant new competition for Aviator Nation. But Mycoskie isn't concerned: “Now that athleisure is such a big deal, people are [OK with wearing] a tracksuit or a sweatsuit pretty much anywhere they go,” she said. “It obviously works to my benefit -- but it's definitely what we've been doing since day one. The L.A.-based company now has 13 brand stores, and 90% of its sales are direct-to-consumer. Mycoskie said more stores are on the way.  “When my friends ask me about business, one of the things I always say is to just go for it,” she said. “Don't waste too much time on the details; just put it out there.”

I learned quickly that we had a lot in common, so we maintained a connection after that initial meet up. We've chatted regularly by DM, email and text since that day about our businesses, sometimes venting about how slow the start up process can be. Ugh! You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re in the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s, and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled, and overcome as you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. This is the premiere episode of Group of Five Live, hosted by Chris Mycoskie (http://mycoskie.net/) . This show will concentrate on the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference, and Sun Belt Conference.    The Group of Five has shrunk to the Group of Three this fall. The MAC announced its decision to cancel fall football on Aug. 8, with hopes of playing in the spring. The Mountain West did the same two days later. The lone exception is the Air Force Academy, as the Falcons will play its two games vs. service academy opponents this fall.    We’ll drop episodes of Group of Five Live every Monday and Friday. Each Monday, we’ll look back on the weekend and preview upcoming mid-week games. Fridays, we’ll look ahead to the Saturday slate.   This week, the Thursday schedule features two games: Central Arkansas at UAB, 7 pm Central, ESPN3 (https://www.espn.com/watch/) . South Alabama at Southern Miss, 8 pm Central, CBSSN (https://www.cbssports.com/cbs-sports-network/) .    After the introduction, Chris is joined by UAB radio color analyst Steve Irvine (3:59). If there’s any team and coach prepared to handle this crazy off-season, it’s the UAB Blazers and Bill Clark. The program was shut down in 2015 and 2016, only to be reborn in 2017. By 2018, the Blazers were Conference USA champions and Boca Raton Bowl winners.   Then Chris chats with South Alabama radio play-by-play broadcaster J.D. Byars (12:53). The Jaguars are coming off a 2-10 season and will face Southern Miss for the first time this week. After that, they’ll return home to Mobile for the grand opening of a new on-campus stadium, hosting Tulane on Sept. 12 in front of a 25 percent capacity crowd.

Blake Mycoskie had a number of hits and misses as a young entrepreneur, but it was a trip to Argentina that inspired the idea that would become his mission—and end up having a huge impact on the business world. Mycoskie wanted to find a way to help the children he encountered who didn’t have proper footwear, but he wanted to do it in a for-profit, self-sustaining way. That’s how TOMS came to life. From there, Mycoskie blazed a trail in the way companies think about social good, by popularizing the one-for-one giving model and building the beloved brand that still exists today. TOMS generates hundreds of millions in sales and still stays true to its mission of giving back to communities around the world. Check out this episode to learn more about Mycoskie’s advice for those who want to pursue social entrepreneurship, the business model that led to his success, and the expansion of TOMS into other types of products. Blake Mycoskie is the Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS, and the person behind the idea of One for One®, a business model that helps a person in need with every product purchased. A simple idea has grown into a global movement: TOMS Shoes has provided over 86 million pairs of shoes to children since 2006, TOMS Eyewear has restored sight to over 600,000 people since 2011 and TOMS Roasting Company has helped provide over 600,000 weeks of safe water since launching in 2014. In 2015, TOMS Bag Collection was founded with the mission to help provide training for skilled birth attendants and distribute birth kits containing items that help a woman safely deliver her baby. As of 2016, TOMS has supported safe birth services for over 25,000 mothers. TOMS humble beginnings happened unintentionally. While traveling in Argentina in 2006, Blake witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes. His solution to the problem was simple, yet revolutionary: to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Blake's vision soon turned into the simple business idea that provided the powerful foundation for TOMS.
