I grew up with a disabled sister so there was a lot of worry in the household and I think by watching my mom get really worried to un-pick what was going on even at that early stage, and know that I needed to seek mindfulness. Thoughts on Breathing Pat: Start paced breathing now. There's research that talks about a group of bankers that 62% improvement of cognitive function, 42% decrease in stress after 40 minutes of paced breathing a day, 20 in the morning, 20 in the evening. If that's too much for you in one go, do what you can. I top and tail my day with it and then build it in before a zoom call or while I'm making a pot of coffee or tea. Suggested Resources Book, Claire: The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson App, Pat: Calm / Headspace / 10% Happier Bullying Story Claire: I was twelve years old, in a school cloakroom when two older girls come up and they push me. I fall back into all the coats. I'm a newbie in the school, and I'm looking up at them, and these young women in their fourth or fifth year are trying to exert their power. They're telling me that I need to watch it, and that they're watching me. I have no idea really, what they mean but I'm scared and my heart rate is way up. I do nothing until they leave me alone. They were likely having a surge of oestrogen and a whole lot of testosterone and their cortisol rose. They were feeling aggressive and like they were needing to throw their weight around in order to prove themselves. I don't believe they were bad girls. So they chose to pick on someone younger and weaker. I didn't have very much testosterone or estrogen at that point. I wasn't expecting any kind of confrontation so my arousal chemistry just wasn't there. My testosterone stayed right where it was at a low level, but my cortisol spiked way up and I began to feel terrible anxiety. What mindfulness does is keep all that cortisol band of arousal so we have enough energy to keep our skin in the game but we don't get threatened that's why it's so important for a peaceable, tolerant world. My journey has taught me that sometimes that's the worst thing to show as a professional. Sometimes things just stink and there's nothing we can do. I still remember doing a death notification of a woman, her son was in college, an only child and her husband had died in the country that she had come from. She was telling me about her son. All I could think of was, this poor woman. And I can remember tearing up and part of my journey is, big boys don't cry. My heart really ached for her. It allowed me to be with her. And it was a newspaper article, a couple of weeks later, that I cut out and gave to my wife because in the newspaper there was a thank you and it was written on the worst day of my life. I spent the early morning hours with an angel. My wife didn't believe it was me at first, but when I connected who that person was with her on the worst day of her life. What did I learn about mindfulness and about being present, about not being cognitive but not being a jellyfish just to own what I'm really experiencing and then addressing my mindset to say, I can't fix this, so I am going to be with her and just hear her stories. This is where mindfulness can be a very subjective definition. For me, mindfulness allows me to be present in that moment with that mindset that says, what is the best thing that I can do right now to help. Thoughts on Breathing Here's where my dark humour gets me into problems. Do not start smoking. However, I teach deep breathing from the smoking perspective because smokers do three things that we have to learn: 1. they take a break, 2. they are outside with social support, and 3. they're doing deep breathing exercises. A smoker who might be really stressed as they are exhaling will blow rings. That even slows the exhale down more. The smoke break principle is the triangle model: inhale for 5, hold for 5, exhale for 5. Having sucked my thumb for that long, I believe that it prepared me to deal with opposition in a way that doesn't always beat me down. In episode 91, I talk about why fear is a GOOD thing and how you can embrace it in your marketing. So many women entrepreneurs view fear as a sign that things aren’t working or that they should move in a new direction. It’s actually the opposite - fear shows us what’s important to us and points us in the direction of where we want to go. The key is not to let fear in the driver’s seat or else we’ll never actually follow our journey the way it was meant to go. What one thing are you afraid of right now? That’s the thing you need to go after. Connect with Market Like a Boss! Find & attract dream clients with Michelle’s Land Your Dream Client Challenge. It's there, but I'm not engaged in it. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is my anchor. Breathing is my mindful process that I pay attention to. When I'm out and about in my life I notice that I'm in my head and there's lots of thoughts and I also notice that I'm holding my breath. Then I use a deep breath to bring myself back around to the present moment. Suggested Resources Book: The Gift Of Presence by Caroline Welch App: Headspace Bullying Story I was bullied in Primary School. I was fat and and I had pimples and my surname back then was Boyle, so it was Penny Boyle. I was called horrible names and a few years later I developed anorexia which is a very common pattern. I was very shy and withdrawn and mindfulness has really helped my self-confidence. I was aware back then of what we called the observer so there was a part of me that could observe what I was doing but I didn't know what to do with that. If I'd had mindfulness back then, I think I would have related to my emotions and thoughts in a different way rather than using the repression of food to have that emotional control over my life and it would have helped with my self-esteem too. When I get into something, I get into it. I'm working with an energy healer who's got me running in my underwear, in the snow, barefoot. He says, do 72 steps in the snow, barefoot and it will help your energy. I'm having cold showers each day. I'm doing exercises snacks and after this interview I'll go on the chin-up bar and do some pull-ups just for a minute. That's one example of focus, and it feels good to me. What Anger Are You Holding? I don't identify it as anger, but I think almost all of us have some. For me it occurs as frustration. I've been living with anxiety and depression for twenty years. I had some trauma as a kid which apparently is still impacting me. After twelve years ago I started feeling tired quite often and had some trouble sleeping. I've tried so many different things to work on my energy and it's working to the point that I can sit here with you and it feels good right now. About three o'clock this afternoon I'll probably do a meditation and then hopefully I can go out and be with friends, but sometimes I can't. I would think that after fifteen years of working on this, I would have power over it. Bullying Story After high school, and when I discovered personal growth, and I discovered communication, and I discovered tough conversations, my coach kept encouraging me to clean up my past and make lists of people that I resented and that I was holding anger against. So I would make the lists and then my coach said, now you have to call them. Through good coaching I managed to find my way to call a guy that I used to like and we were friends, but he would bully me. He would make fun of me in class and he would put me down and get the other kids riled up against me. I didn't want to call him because I thought he would think I was an idiot. My coach said, start with that. And so I called him and said, I was afraid to call you because I was afraid you would think I was an idiot. I told him, I felt pushed around and bullied and belittled by you at school and I've been holding onto that for twenty years. I just wanted to let you know. He said, what can I say or do now to help us move forward? I couldn't believe that this guy I thought was such a jerk, could say something like that.Related Episodes 423 Play Life For Real With Coaching Icon, David Wood Using The Success Principles During Challenging Times; Jack Canfield Work With Bruce Have you been trying to lose weight or quit smoking. I don't fear them, I feel them. And I let them pass through. And I have learned to give myself that space and that grace to not always have to feel wonderful. Perfection is only a perception and it's usually not rooted in reality. Thoughts on Breathing Breathwork grounds us. I believe that it's virtually impossible to be truly mindful without being grounded. Proper breathwork, conscious deep breathing, also activates the parasympathetic part of our brains which is part of our central nervous system. It regulates so many functions of our body and when we're in the parasympathetic state, also known as rest and digest, we are doing just that. Our bodies are in the flow. Suggested Resources Book: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay Book: The Freedom Promise: Seven Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What Food Will Do FOR You by Mindy Gorman-Plutzer App: Calm / BrainTap Bullying Story I bullied myself for so many years. I belittled my needs. I bullied myself into believing that I wasn't enough as I was. I bullied myself in such a way that belittled my needs for food and proper nourishment. I thought that I could buy my ‘enough', by denying myself. That for me was a form of bullying and self-betrayal. It wasn't until I went through that dark period that brought me to this period of light and self-discovery did I realize that until I found my enough and reclaimed it. As I said in the book, the freshly baked brownie, the glass or two of wine, the new pair of shoes, was never going to do it. What I needed to do was to dig deep and find what I like to refer to as my sacred space of solitude where I could dig deeper than myself. For me that became my higher power, my deepest self where I knew I was safe. And what does someone who is bullied want? They want to feel safe. They want to feel they belong. If you think about the bully, the bully is really a coward. My bully was my eating disorder self who needed me to believe that I needed her or else I couldn't function. That is what a bully does. We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Goud of Northcote over Zoom videoCanadian singer/songwriter Northcote (aka Matt Goud) is gearing up for his US debut this fall. But first, let us share a little more about this troubadour who sonically falls in line with Ruston Kelly and Lori McKenna: wistfully intimate vocals mixed with a rock n’ roll poet’s heart. Here are 4 things you need to know about Northcote:* Rock N’ Roll Poet: he’s heavily inspired by artists ranging from Lori McKenna to Strand of Oaks; he's a self-described “gentle giant singing poems and stories that shed light on personal growth, love, family, friendship and spirituality with steadfast energy and storytelling imagery.”* A cappella religious singing to heavy metal: growing up in Carlyle, Saskatchewan (pop. 1500), Goud grew up wanting to star in musicals. He quickly dove into music, first taking up the piano, guitar and drums and joining the school band in his elementary and middle school years. He even joined a capable religion singing group and event sent out to perform with a Canadian heavy metal band for over 6 years.* Seminary drop-out turned mental health worker & touring troubadour: Dreams and reality quickly collided and when Goud graduated from his Christian boarding school he went on to ministry until dropping out at 21. Now — when he’s not in the studio or on the road — he’s a harm reduction and mental health worker in shelters and safe injection sites.* Self-acceptance, reconnection and intimacy: on his upcoming album, he delivers sonic patchwork of warmly crafted folk/Americana storytelling about self-acceptance, intimacy and liberating feeling of releasing yourself form guilt and shame, while seeking genuine and honest connection.Northcote is the performance moniker for Victoria-based singer and songwriter, Matthew Goud. A troubadour at heart, Goud has been writing songs and touring the world for most of his adult life. With three full-length projects, two EPs and over 500 shows performed globally alongside some of the heavyweights of his genre, Goud's is a familiar voice to many in the community. 2020 sees the latest iteration of Northcote, one that finds his signature raspy-sweet voice effortlessly laid over a beautifully blended landscape of folk and Americana. Drawing inspiration from two years of self-reflection and exploration, the forthcoming collection of songs, Let Me Roar (October 2020) are the most personal and affecting of his career to date. The first single “Dancers and Queens”, leads the way in this regard. The song lauds those who Goud sees as having taken the less conventional path in life, a group of which he considers himself and some of those closest around him to be members. Of the song, Goud remarks. "I have wrestled with fear and guilt as I have grown into the person I am today. I have tried my best to be open to where my heart, mind and soul was leading me to in my life up to this point. The story and visuals of a youthful traveller resonates with me even now, since I am still on my journey to find more Dancing and to find that hidden gem that is a crown that fits only me.”Subsequent singles, “Keep On Saying Goodbye”, a song about real or imagined borders in a relationship, and “Nine To Midnight” which explores the sacrifices that parents make to provide for their families, continue this theme of personal yet relatable stories. This is something Northcote has endeavoured to capture in his songs throughout his career and has achieved in spades with this new batch of songs. If there is a hallmark to the new material beyond his distinguished voice, it’s the stories he has been able to tell. With roots in mid-western Canada and having lived in over a dozen places during his time as Northcote, Goud has settled in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife where he does social work while not on the road. His outward dedication to the community, especially marginalized communities is commendable, and finds its roots in his faith upbringing. This of course weaves itself into the fabric of his songs as well. With no touring for the foreseeable future, Northcote is without one of his most powerful points of connection with fans, new and old. Having toured from small clubs, to beautiful churches and alternative spaces, to some of the biggest concert halls in the world, Goud is routinely praised for his ability to make any venue an intimate, personal affair. Performing solo, or along with accompaniment in a duo or quartet format, Goud’s presence on stage is equally captivating. As we all hope for the quick containment of the global pandemic, Goud yearns for the opportunity to get back on the road to share these songs and these stories with audiences around the world. We want to hear from you! I’ve seen plenty of women throw out their entire marketing strategy simply because of one no. They assume that because they heard the word no that means their messaging isn’t right, they’re showing up in the wrong places, and their entire strategy needs to be thrown out. That couldn’t be further from the truth. When you understand why certain leads become clients (and others don’t), you’ll realize that the no has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the other person. You’ll also get a lot better at predicting who will say no and who will say yes. Here’s why certain leads become clients: 1 → They need the help you offer the MOST 2 → They’ve struggled long enough with their problem 3 → They feel a connection to you 4 → Your offer aligns with the type of support they’re looking for 5 → They value their time MORE than money Why some leads don’t become clients: 1 → They still think they can solve their problem on their own 2 → They have more time to spend trying to solve their problem 3 → They need a lot of help in different areas 4 → They’re not confident you can help them 5 → They’re not confident in themselves Connect with Market Like a Boss! Giovanni Dienstmann is an author, certified meditation teacher, coach and speaker. He has a diverse training with over 9,000 hours of meditation, and a teaching style that is pragmatic, simple, methodical, and non-sectarian. Giovanni's personal anthem is Empowered Peace and Empowered Peace is the reality he lives in now. At only 15-years old, meditation taught Gio that the real bully was inside his head, and that he could learn to be his own best friend. It taught him how to let go, be greater than his problems, and accept himself. Giovanni has written a book called Practical Meditation: A Simple Step-By-Step Guide. I can just accept whatever emotion is happening to me right now, with all the sensations in my body, pleasant or unpleasant and that there's still space for me to chose what I want to do with it. Do I just want to watch and let it pass? Do I want to fuel it to attention and then increase it if it's a positive emotion? Do I want to process it so that it kind of disappears. Mindfulness gives me these options. Thoughts on Breathing My style of meditation is not about breathing. I've tried breathing styles in the past and they were not the best ones for me. Having said that, breathing is an important element of my mindfulness practice throughout the day. I notice that when I am eating, I try to pay attention to my breathing. When I breathe more deeply and slowly while I eat, I chew better and I feel that digestion happens easier after that for some reason. When I'm working, I may be answering emails or something and from time to time I remember to breathe deeply and slowly and the more I do that throughout the day, the less tired I feel at the end of the day. The train was off the track and there was nothing you could do to bring it back. Being mindful has actually helped me to contain, corral, and not be a victim of my own anger and temper since I've aged. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is how I center myself. I swim a lot and breath control is a very big part of swimming. A deep breath will allow your gases to exchange. I can actually feel the increased circulation in my body as I take a big, deep breath and hold it in for a second or two, or five or ten or even thirty. I can feel my body getting invigorated because I've given it the opportunity for that very efficient gas exchange. So breathing is a huge part of how I can improve my physiology on a second to second basis. Now I can be with my sadness, my anger, my rage, and my fear; and breathe into it and not run from it. It's incredibly empowering to welcome whatever's arising. Thoughts on Breathing I didn't learn much about breathing until I started to learn to meditate. Then I learned that there are all kinds of ways to breathe and breathe differently; breathe through the body, breathe through the nose, breathe through the mouth, hold my breathe, exhale longer. I'm still learning, I'm still on that journey. I think how we breathe has a big impact on our life. Suggested Resources Book: Touching Enlightenment: Finding Realization In The Body by Reginald A. Ray Book: A Path With Heart by Jack Kornfield Book: John Welwood's Books / Bruce Tift's Books App: n/a Bullying Story I was bullied and I, in turn, bullied some people. In every story, mindfulness would have made a difference. In Middle School I bumped into some big football player and knocked over his chocolate milk and he grabbed me by the neck and held me up. I was this little scrawny kid and I hadn't gone through puberty yet. I was terrified and I ran off. I felt so ashamed and embarrassed because it was in front of everybody at lunch. [With mindfulness] I probably would have still run off because that was an appropriate thing to do. Had I just rounded the corner and just sat down outside and just knew to breathe, and cry and be with myself, and even better, have some adult or older kid who would have been able to hold space for me and breathe with me and just hang out while I just moved through the trauma. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bella Kelly over Zoom video!BELLA KELLY is acutely aware of the powerful, lifesaving potential of the creative arts. She has firsthand experience, because music saved her life, too, and it’s a gift she hopes to pass on.Conjuring strength and resilience from the depths of anxiety, depression, and despair, the enchanting and adroit young singer/songwriter makes music for the melancholy, the outcast. The disenfranchised and pushed-aside are all welcome within the fascinating worldbuilding of her haunting and immersive songs. Each composition is a distinctive clarion call to self-acceptance and empowerment. A small child who was “othered,” unequipped to connect and make friends, robbed of innocence, BELLA used her rich imagination to make an emotional escape through song. Her music is at once grand and cinematic in scale and yet equally intimate, with stark vulnerability.Songs like the mesmerizing slow burn “Heartbreak Motel” and the invigorating gothic-trap anthem “Throat” resonate with outsiders because BELLA casts her lot with them, alone with the alone. “Goodbye” is alarming in its naked intensity, its stark emotional honesty, an alluring tug at the soul. She paints sonic pictures of smoky greys and ghostly whites, cloaked in protective darkness.BELLA’s life began with a triumph over adversity almost supernatural in scale. A heart condition nearly took her from this world just as soon as she’d arrived, her tiny body robbed of its heartbeat several times just a few days after her birth. She was born in Brunswick, Georgia, a small town anchored by the Victorian-era Old Town District and its massive 900-year old Lover’s Oaktree. From the age of six, she penned short stories and songs, to replace the demons of isolation and sadness as her childhood companions. A talent agent cast her in a television commercial when she was nine, which began a four-year detour into short films, series, and feature-length movies. Film and TV remain essential to her, from vintage horror to classic cerebral anthologies. But music is BELLA’s true calling, from the healing magic it works in her own life to the way it affects others. At one of the lowest emotional points for her personally, as a young adult, the dark fire and churning sentiment under her surface were recognized by David Gnozzi, the Italian-born producer and YouTube star. Well versed in everything from pulsating electronic-driven music to rock and hip-hop, Gnozzi began a creative partnership with BELLA that was nothing less than revelatory. Over two years, BELLA sharpened her sound and musical identity, with David producing, resulting in more than 30 songs, and fully realized narrative visions for music videos and related imagery.Like the greatest of vocal-driven indie-pop, Gothic Folk, chillwave, and balladeering, BELLA KELLY’s music offers safe passage from the real horrors of modern everyday life. Get lost and immersed in narrative soundscapes that give rise to evocative phantoms and specters, beckoning those who’ve struggled with anxiety, depression, or hardships. Previous releases from The Sea The Sea—Love We Are We Love (2014), In the Altogether (2016 / EP), and From The Light (2018)—have been praised by outlets including NPR, American Songwriter, and No Depression, and the animated video for their song "Waiting" sparked viral interest from Buzzfeed and Pitchfork, as well as inclusion at the international TED 2015 conference. We had the pleasure of interviewing FINKEL over Zoom video! Adam was able to talk to Brian and Jane of FINKEL over Zoom video. The married couple told us about meeting in a college acapella group, starting a band and how a viral hit took them to LA. Check out FINKEL’s new song, Bleach Vial!Jane and Brian Spencer of FINKEL seem to arrive from the near future, or perhaps somewhere out there, appearing with a slight shimmer of a dimension adjacent to our own. With an atmosphere treading the periphery of pop, the duo’s tangible vocal presence overlays hypnotic electro pulsations in a combination that teases out details of last night’s otherworldly dreams and tempts the waking state to return to its astral analog. While it remains unclear where these two have been, it’s evident enough that they’re here now. She triggering a MIDI mixing board, he on guitar, their vocals intertwine with a shadowy fluidity that invokes notions of another time; perhaps the middle of next week. They sense you wondering what you’re doing then, and invite you back to the present with a wink. A tale of two spirits unravels curiously from the seams of FINKEL's musical catalogue. Their ethereal synthetic textures and rich vocal harmonies produce an aesthetic that grabs attention and gives it a nudge. The result somehow distills the mood of a strange day’s fleeting moments into a potent, lingering hex. Like the feeling of a passing glance with a mysterious stranger, we’re left assured we just encountered something ineffable, and wondering if someone else felt it too. FINKEL most recently released their debut EP, "Backpack of Snacks" on April 3rd and then put out a remix EP, "Remix of Snacks" on August 21st. To round out 2020, the duo plans to release a pandemic reflection record titled "Sick 2020" with features from hip hop artists Monse and Kamakaze, comedian Laura DiLorenzo, along with several other features on December 11th, 2020. What Does Mindfulness Mean To You? Mindfulness means being aware of bringing ourselves back home to ourselves. Connecting with our body. I call it the Universal Slap. It's a reminder from the universe that we need to bring ourselves back to ourselves. Suggested Resources Book: The Black Ball: Does Anybody Else Have A Secret? Bullying Story One of my first bullying events was when I was about 6 years old and it was through a teacher at school. Imagine a classroom of 20 children and the energy of that room is green, green being positive. So you're 6 years old and you're in this room playing and you're talking about the Simpsons. Then a teacher who is very angry, comes into the room and says, ‘wipe that smile off your face, Lovell'. He shames me in front of the other kids at a key developmental age. This happened multiple times. I am now creating a story that says, I'm not good enough, what's wrong with you, you're bad. When it comes to your present life, that interruption of energy from green to red, when I'm being shamed by the teacher, it's called hyper arousal. It's that hyper arousal that sends you into fight or flight. If that doesn't get resolved, you will continue to live a life where, when I'm 13 years old and I'm in a shower room being bullied by a rugby kid, now based on the earlier event, do I now stand up to the bully in the shower room, or do I cower? I cower. I was going through clinical depression at the time, in my early 20s. Someone asked the Dali Lama, what would you do if you were depressed, as a Buddha? First, he laughed and said, I wouldn't know, I'm not depressed. Then he said something which resonated and stayed with me. He said, your emotions are like the waves on an ocean … sometimes they're bigger and sometimes they're smaller. And they are always passing by. But deep below the waves, there's a calmness, a serenity; there's clarity and there's wisdom. And any point in time, you can often find waves of going deeper within, you can operate from that place. Thoughts on Breathing Seth: I would first set a specific time to practice because it's really easy to have an intention to do it but then other things will inevitably get in the way. Then, start small with maybe a minute, or 3 minutes, or 5 minutes and just sit, notice the breath, be with those sensations, and know that meditation is not about making your thoughts stop. The more we try to do that actually, the more persistent the thoughts become. We just focus on the breath and then the mind will wander and will bring it right back. Want to know the #1 thought that made me a multi 6-figure business owner?⠀ It wasn't: "I'm amazing at what I do."⠀ It wasn't: "Clients are on their way to me."⠀ Ready for it...?⠀ It was: "I'm going to work this until it works."⠀ Yep. That's the driving thought that has made my business $300K and counting. It's the thought that has led to me doubling my income this year. And frankly, it's the thought that will make me a million dollars.⠀ Why? Because working your strategy until it works is what leads to REAL growth. All the gurus and experts would have you believe that real success happens overnight. Not the case, my friends. Long lasting, sustainable success comes from tweaking and refining. From making what you're already doing well work even better. It comes when you learn from your mistakes and the things that didn't go the way you expected.⠀ If everything worked perfectly 100% of the time, we would never grow. We would never have the space to get better at our craft. We wouldn't build up any endurance. And believe me - you need business endurance if you're planning to make a massive impact on the world.⠀ I truly believe that this thought is the one that makes all the difference. I also believe it's the lack of this thought that keeps talented women spinning themselves in circles chasing the next shiny object because things aren't working the way they want them to.⠀ What if you committed to working your strategy until it works? ⠀ What if you stopped expecting overnight success?⠀ How much longer would you stick with your strategy?⠀ How consistent would you be in showing up for your audience?⠀ How much more FUN would you actually have in your marketing?⠀ Connect with Market Like a Boss! With mindfulness, you find inner pieces. And I call it inner pieces because you get pieces of it and then you go through the other human emotions and then you find your way back to peace. But you're not in inner peace all the time because you need all of the other emotions to channel you, to challenge you, to help you grow, to help you remember what not to do. In this week’s episode, I talk about why it’s so important to share your success with your audience. I see so many talented women keeping themselves small to make others feel better and so no one else is threatened. Unfortunately, when they don’t share their accomplishments, their dream clients don’t recognize how they can help them. Here’s the truth: dream clients are inspired by success - not threatened. In the episode I talk about: the difference between bragging vs. sharing success how I got out of my funk last summer (and the post that turned things around) the REAL reason we’re afraid to talk about our success Connect with Market Like a Boss! Effect on Emotions Mindfulness helps me to stay with the poems. When I write a poem, I meditate. Every time that I work with a poem, I'm in a mindful state. In a class I was teaching, a woman told me she didn't have thirty minutes to exercise every day because she had two jobs. When I was driving home I was thinking how could a person not have thirty minutes in a day to create this micro progressive system so they could get better in life. So I came home, went to my meditation room for four hours and then wrote a poem. I went back to the class and read the poem and the poem was very moving to everyone. The women said that the poem moved her. (Jerzy shares the poem later in the episode). Thoughts on Breathing I created singularity of the brain within one repetition and there are six things that happen with one repetition. Inhale and then holding the breath, flexing the seven body parts, lifting, stretch, return, and exit. All six things repeat, and those six things create the mantra and that singularity and mindfulness that happens during this time creates thirteen minutes of exercise system when they exercise that way. They also feel like they meditate. So they are completely mindful during the thirty minutes. Suggested Resources Book: Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth Book: The Happy Body: The Simple Science of Nutrition, Exercise, and Relaxation by Jerzy Gregorek App: n/aBullying Story I was one of the shorter boys and of course the communism was there too, and communism was tough. When you are thirteen, you sense what parents are going through. They were persecuted and they have problems so you feel it. When I was around thirteen I was bullied, badly. I had to walk to the school, not a long walk, maybe a quarter of a mile. During this walk I would be caught by boys to get money, and they would hold me upside down by the ankles and shake me to get money from me. There was constant bullying. Final Words of Advice I think that we need to focus on goodness, the goodness in every way and fight for it. The goodness is getting more flexible or stronger or more mindful. The goodness is be kind in the world. The goodness is to love people as they are and give them the science of what to do to get better. Goodness is to choose hard choices verses easy choices in life to create micro progressive systems. Goodness is an amazing thing because goodness also creates self-control and self-discipline, delayed gratification and it is a sign of virtues. I think the stoics were right that virtues are more important than almost anything that we do in life. Related Episodes 388 Total Heart Health With Renowned Physician-Scientist Dr. Robert H. A reaction, I find, comes from a place in you that is very driven by emotional frequencies in your body where I think response and thinking, taking a breath and mindfulness, I think that represents a true authentic reaction rather than some kind of weird human instinct. Thoughts on Breathing Juliana: Breathing has been a huge part of my mindfulness practice because it's the one tool that allows me to ground myself any time I feel that I can't get ahold of my emotions or my reactions or my thoughts. Practicing different breathing techniques, like the 3-part breath or Wim Hof; all of that allows me that conscious awareness of me bringing in more prana and that life energy into myself and my body into my being which reminds me that I'm in control of that energy. Taking it into the present moment; bullying in business. Our life is very public on Youtube and we like to share our experiences. These days we're trying to do that even more. We get so much positive feedback from our community, which is amazing, but from time to time, of course, there is negative feedback. There's so many trolls in the internet. “What I do is basic knowledge. Anyone can figure it out.” Be honest: this thought has definitely crossed your mind at some point. Maybe it’s even on your mind right now and is keeping you from showing up and saying what you really want to say. Here’s the problem with this statement: if you believe that your knowledge is too basic, then you won’t show up confidently and say the thing that your dream client ACTUALLY needs to hear. Then you don’t attract the clients you want and that’s when women contemplate lighting their businesses on fire. Put the matches down and hear me out for a second on a few things: 1 → If your information feels basic to you, that’s a GOOD thing. It means you’re marketing the knowledge that you know intimately. If what you do didn’t feel basic to you, then I would question whether you’re actually tapping into your inner God-given talents. I see so many women try to come up with a unique offer that is padded with extra crap they really don’t want to do. We resist the things that come easily to us because we don’t think we should charge for them. Guess what - the thing that IS basic to you is the very thing you should be charging for. 2 → What feels basic to you is NOT basic to your dream clients. I’m always surprised because the things that I feel are the most basic are often the things that blow the minds of my audience. People are distracted. They have a lot going on and they can’t keep up with all the information out there. Even if your information were basic and they could figure it out on their own (which I highly doubt), they still have to figure out how to apply the info to their business. They also won’t be able to see objectively enough to apply the information to get the best results possible. That’s why they need you -- to help them digest the knowledge and put it into context. Remember - just because someone knows something doesn’t mean they can apply it to their business in a way that gets results. Don’t undervalue the clarity you give someone in helping them apply the information to their business or life. You’re saving them so much more time than if they tried to do it on their own. 3 → A client’s success isn’t just about what they know - it’s about consistency in working toward their goal. You can give them that consistency by talking them off ledges and helping them get out of their own head and way. That’s something Google can never teach them. One last thing: if someone truly thinks your info is too basic, they’re NOT your dream client. They’re not in the right stage to work with you. Don’t worry about marketing to them and focus on the people who need your knowledge and support right now. Connect with Market Like a Boss! I believe on the healing journey, we need to get our thinking to a place where we learn how to take responsibility for everything because when, in your psyche, you get to a place where you take responsibility for anything and everything, then there is no part of your psyche that can be a victim anymore. Effect on Emotions Crystal says mindfulness has affected her emotions tremendously. It helps me realize that whatever is going on outside of me that's causing me to feel these things can always be questioned and it's not necessarily the truth. If I go inside and be still with myself, then I can find the truth. Thoughts on Breathing Mark's thoughts on breathing: Breathing is everything because breathing brings you back to center. I wrote a forward to a book called Three Deep Breaths, by Thomas Crum. Three breaths are what you need to take before you go into meditation, I believe. It relaxes you, it centers you, and you get in touch with your soul, the essence of who you are, the god in you, that's what I believe. Pert App: Ask – The Book Club (www.AskTheBookClub.com) Bullying Story When I was in 8th grade I got a ride to school with the minister in this purple car. It was embarrassing to go to eighth grade in a purple car. We arrived at school and I had grown so tall, so fast. I was the tallest kid in class at 6′ 4″ and 13 years old. I was gangly and uncoordinated. I wrote to the radio station, WLS in Chicago. Wrote to the Great Pumpkin, who would answer every kid's question. My question to him was, Dear Great Pumpkin, my name is Mark Victor Hansen, I go to Webster Junior High School, I'm in Eighth grade, I'm 6′ 4″ and too tall for my class and I'm uncoordinated. So we're in the car with 6 kids and this question comes over the radio. He says, I'm going to tell you what to do today, Mark. “Cut off your head and carry it to school in a paper bag.” Every kid kept asking me, where's my bag. Picture this scenario: You get an email notifying you that someone has booked a discovery call with you. You look at the questionnaire they filled out and they seem like a perfect fit. You get on the call and everything is going perfectly - until you get to the part where you talk about your services and the investment. The prospect pauses and then says the four dreaded words: “I can’t afford it.” All the wind gets sucked out of you. You feel extremely frustrated because you have no clue why things were going so well and now they’re not. So you spin into a cycle of anxiety questioning why people can’t afford to work with you. You start thinking that maybe you should add more to your offer or add a special bonus or discount to attract more clients. Next thing you know you’re completely reorganizing your business. Stop right there, my friend. It’s NEVER really about the money. Want to know the real reason they can’t afford you? It’s because your service isn’t the top priority for them. They just feel uncomfortable telling you that - so they tell you they can’t afford it because it feels easier to make it about them vs. risk hurting your feelings. I realize this may be hard to hear. But it’s so necessary if you want to attract higher level clients who are ready to invest in solving their problem. When your offer is a priority for someone, they will FIND the money (even if they don’t have it right now). Think about your own life. Have you ever not had money for something but you figured it out because you wanted the solution really badly? Exactly. It’s not the money...it’s the value the person associates with your solution to their problem. When you make it all about the money, you will attract people who make it all about the money. Focus on conveying the value of your offer and watch the type of clients you attract shift. Also be careful not to make assumptions about what your dream client can/can’t afford. It’s not up to you to manage their wallet. Often the people you don’t expect to sign on do. Let go of your desire to control the outcome and let your audience make their own decisions. In the operating room, everyone always says, how come he's so calm. That calmness is because of mindfulness. Just taking time, having peace and presence of mind. That's how mindfulness has impacted me. It's given me a great amount of equanimity at times of duress. Thoughts on Breathing Mindfulness is very central and it's foundational to keeping myself centered and I also believe it helps to regulate my heart rate. I wear a sensor watch so I'm always proud of myself when my resting heart-rate is in the 40's. Sometimes I can get it down to 41 or 42. I'm also a runner so I should qualify that. I don't take any beta blockers. It's my way of saying to myself, I'm doing well. He embraced mindfulness and found a lot of value from it. I remind him now that he's in the stress of high school with a rigorous curriculum that he should use it as a way to bring himself back to present. It will give him the calm and the space to look at the world and understand how you fit into life holistically. Mindfulness gives me the opportunity to have gratitude and that has been very helpful.
