Ireland is home to a high-performing life sciences industry, offering outstanding opportunities for both economic development and public health. Unlike other European countries, however, Ireland does not have a holistic vision for the future of the sector. This is set to change, as the Government has promised to develop a new national life sciences strategy. Our European peers have already adopted ambitious strategies to secure the industry and harness its social benefits, coordinating policy across a range of areas from enterprise and investment to research and healthcare. This two-part event series, organised by the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, will explore these questions and more, bringing together Irish and European leaders from industry, public policy, and academia to discuss the right approach for a national life sciences strategy for Ireland. Developing a Life Sciences Vision for Ireland: Lessons from Europe on Economic Strategy is the first event in this two-part hybrid series on Developing a Life Sciences Vision for Ireland. The panel discusses how Ireland should develop its promised national strategy for the life sciences, positioning itself as a global hub for the industry. The sector is a critical pillar of our economy, covering industries from biopharmaceuticals to medical devices. The panellists will look at what other European countries are doing to embed investment, sharpen their competitive edge, and prepare for future waves of innovation. Chaired by Bryan Dobson, the panel brings together international and Irish experts to discuss how a holistic vision for the life sciences can become part of Ireland's economic strategy. Panellists: Michael Lohan, CEO IDA Ireland Diana Arsovic Nielson, CEO at the Danish Life Sciences Cluster Professor Mark Ferguson, Former Director General of SFI and current Rapporteur and Lead Author for the European Commission High Level Group for the evaluation of Horizon Europe Jenni Nordborg, Director of International Affairs at Lif and Former National Coordinator for Life Sciences, Sweden Bryan Dobson, Former RTÉ Newsreader (Moderator)

This is followed by a panel discussion that looks at the future of the European Health Union before a moderated Q&A session. He added that they cannot continue with a situation whereby they will be spending close to N3 trillion annually on subsidies and not just because of that, because of the investment, macro-economic implication.

The United Nations was established 75 years ago in June 1945 out of the ashes of the Second World War. It was set up to prevent global atrocities from happening ever again, yet existential threats still remain. In this episode, two former world leaders discuss multilateralism and why effective global partnerships are the best defense against existential threats, including the pandemic that we are facing today. We unpack the reasons for the diminishing levels of trust in public leadership and the paralysis that some believe is affecting the UN's ability to respond effectively to COVID-19 and other global threats. Why is an effective multilateral system and principled leadership the world's best defence against existential threats from pandemics to climate change; from cyberattacks to war? Is the United Nations Security Council effective? What does collective responsibility look like? What should be in the policy toolbox for the new EU Mandate? Citizens are calling for a different and better Europe more aligned to their needs and their inclusion. Uncertainty and unpredictability appear to be the new order of the day, and are upturning the certainties that policy-makers have held for decades. The EU is in a delicate balance and the choices that it makes now will be decisive in setting its path for years to come. But there is a silver lining. The big message from the 11,000 people we surveyed is that with a shift in focus, Europe can still matter to them. Citizens want a renewed social contract that promotes economic growth, peace, security and sustainability for all – a contract that can be the glue that binds together citizens, government, the private sector and civil society in the belief that Europe matters, and that a strong, united Europe can deliver the right responses to take on the challenges we all face. Citizens want a new ‘Vision for Europe’. Friends of Europe will present its ‘Vision for Europe’ report setting out 10 ambitious policy recommendations and a pathway for the next EU leadership. This report aims to map the road ahead on how to construct a Europe fit for purpose in the 21st century. Can the EU increase citizen participation and harness the potential of technology to open markets and secure inclusive and sustainable growth? Will it take measurable action to preserve the planet and make better use of resources? How will Europe rethink its relations with its neighbours and better explore mutually advantageous solutions to international issues? More importantly, can the EU implement a renewed social contract that puts citizens’ needs at the forefront of its priorities? What can it do to make itself matter in the future? Presentation of the New Vision for Europe by Pascal Lamy, Trustee of Friends of Europe, Honorary President of Notre Europe - Jacques Delors Institute, and Former Director General of the World Trade Organisation Interventions from the ‘Vision for Europe’ authors: Alberto Alemanno, EU Law Professor HEC, Founder of the Good Lobby and European Young Leader Caroline de Gruyter, Author and EU Correspondent at NRC Handelsblad Jakob Haesler, Founder of Project Alloy and European Young Leader Martin Porter, Executive Chair at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) Jamie Shea, Senior Fellow at Friends of Europe and Former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges at NATO (2010-2018) And reactions from member states and political parties: Evelyn Huytebroeck, Member of European Green Party Committee Andrea Vitolo, First Counselor to the Diplomatic Advisor to Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy Moderated by Dharmendra Kanani, Director of Insights at Friends of Europe Read the 'Vision for Europe' publication here: https://www.friendsofeurope.org/sites/default/files/media-files/foe_vision-for-europe_web.pdf
CSIS and USA for IOM cordially invite you to a book launch of We’re in Danger! Who Will Help Us? Refugees and Migrants: A Test of Civilization with author James Purcell. While millions of people are displaced around the globe and thousands more contemplate dangerous journeys in search of a better life, We’re in Danger! Who Will Help Us? draws on lessons from the “refugee decade” to inform responses to today’s crises. During the 1980s, major humanitarian emergencies erupted throughout the world. Indochina was the first complex refugee crisis the global humanitarian community faced after World War II. The international community devised new and creative approaches, with victims of crises at the center of policy decision-making, toward humane and durable solutions. Knowledge gained from Indochina and simultaneous crises in other regions proved invaluable in addressing critical challenges in various parts of the world. Mr. Purcell shares his experiences leading the U.S. State Department's Bureau for Refugee Programs (now called Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to call for multilateral approaches—incorporating refugee-decade lessons learned—to solve current and future humanitarian crises. Please join us for a conversation with James Purcell, author of We’re in Danger! Who Will Help Us? and Chairman of USA for IOM followed by a reception. Mr. Purcell is the Former Director General of the IOM and Former Director of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau for Refugee Programs. Mr. Purcell will be available for book signing from 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM. The public event will run from 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM and will be followed by a food and beverage reception from 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM.Books will be available for purchase and signing before the event. Ten percent of all proceeds will benefit USA for IOM and their work to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance for people displaced by natural disasters and conflicts, as well as assistance to survivors and victims of human trafficking. This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
