It was such a joy to meet Dr. Ryan Shepherd! In our conversation, we dove into the many benefits of licorice root, which is one of the most frequently worked-with plants in herbal medicine, thanks to its wide use in Traditional Chinese Medicine formulas. Ryan also shared about his herbal journey from London to China to Texas – a story that is perhaps as varied and unique as licorice itself! In addition to discussing the medicinal benefits of licorice root, Ryan showed just how versatile this herb is by including it in his mouth-watering recipe for Qi-Boosting Chicken. (I can't wait to give this recipe to my handsome French husband so he can make it for me!) You can find your beautifully illustrated recipe card here so that you, too, can make this yummy herb-infused dinner: https://bit.ly/4kodV05 By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Five different body systems that can benefit from licorice► Why licorice root is like the conductor of an orchestra► When Ryan works with licorice in smaller quantities in formulas vs. when he gives it a more starring role► Five conditions that can be helped by working with licorice root► Who should NOT take licorice root (hint: it's not just about hypertension!)► and so much more…For those of you who don't know him, Dr. Ryan Shepherd is one of those amazing practitioners with a deep well of knowledge and experience. He started his journey at the University of Westminster in London, earning his degree in Medical Herbalism, and then went on to study naturopathy, functional medicine, and acupuncture. Cancer. The very word can strike fear in the heart—and unfortunately, it touches many of us at some point in our lives, whether directly or indirectly through family and friends. But cancer… and herbs? What role can herbs possibly play in a big, scary, potentially deadly disease like that? If you're faced with a cancer diagnosis, what can you do to take control of your journey and feel empowered? Just as important, what steps can you take to help prevent cancer in the first place? These are just some of the issues covered in today's episode with Chanchal Cabrera—an herbalist with 35 years of clinical practice who specializes in holistic oncology. It was so good! And Chanchal's new book, Holistic Cancer Care, needs to be on everyone's bookshelf. It's an impressive and helpful book for anyone who's ever been touched by cancer, and even those who want to prevent it.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What is patient-centered medicine, and why is it so vitally important when crafting a treatment plan?► Is it true that lymphatic herbs shouldn't be used by cancer patients? Why or why not?► Why sunscreen doesn't give you the protection you might think it does (and what you can do instead)► How can herbal medicine be included in cancer care, and what are some specific herbs that have been researched for this purpose?► Depending on the treatments selected and the cancer itself, patients may suffer with radiation burns and/or neuropathic pain. As a listener, you'll also receive free access to not one, but two downloadable recipe cards from Chanchal for soothing herbal creams. Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “I see the role of a herbalist as an incredible opportunity to connect people with plants in such a way that they actually care enough about the environment the plants grow in to do something active to help the environment. Really, I see herbalism as an extremely effective form of activism and I consider myself an environmental warrior, an environmental activist through my herbal medicine work.”For those who don't already know her, Chanchal is a medical herbalist and has been in clinical practice for 35 years with a specialty in holistic oncology. She is the author of Fibromyalgia: A Journey towards Healing and her latest book, Holistic Cancer Care: An Herbal Approach to Preventing Cancer, Helping Patients Thrive during Treatment, and Minimizing the Risk of Recurrence, launched in April. She held the faculty chair in Botanical Medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster 2004-2016. She serves on the board of advisors of Dominion Herbal College in Burnaby, on the editorial board of Medical Herbalism clinical newsletter, and she publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on medical herbalism, nutrition, and health.Chanchal is also a certified Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) practitioner, a certified Master Gardener and a certified Horticulture Therapist. Through her website, her podcast ‘Creating a Buzz About Health', her multiple books, speeches, and live and online courses, Paula shares her skills as a consultant beekeeper and Bologna-trained honey sommelier working with individuals, landowners and businesses who want to incorporate bees into their lives, sustainably.Dr Irene and Paula discuss her journey toward beekeeping through natural medicine, the miraculous remedies available from bees, her struggle with long-term illness and conventional medicine, the ability of the body to heal itself, and the fight against pesticides that harm bees.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Paula learned to manage her illnesses with natural methods and studied Medical Herbalism, and this is how she became familiar with the health properties of honey. Paula has researched beekeeping to find alternative ways to conventional methods to allow it to be successful naturally and sustainably. The venom of bees can be used to stimulate the immune system. The moment you introduce something unnatural into your system it will take your body time and effort to remove it. Manuka honey has proven medical benefits as it has an active ingredient called Methylglyoxal. If you use pesticides and other harmful chemicals on crops you are condemning yourself to ingest those chemicals through your food, it is unavoidable. Saw Palmetto Doesn't Discriminate On Gender

Have you heard that black cohosh is “for menopause”? Or that red clover is a “natural estrogen replacement”? Or that saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is “for men” or “for BPH”?Herbs are not gendered, and they’re not “for” conditions. They have qualities and actions, and they act in context – the context of each individual body. Herbs act on particular types of tissue, and it turns out that in the reproductive system, the various forms and functions mask a deeper similarity, a more fundamental identity. Saw palmetto doesn’t check your chromosomes or your estrogen/testosterone ratio before it goes to work in your system: it acts on the pelvic floor organs, regardless of their shape. In this episode we deconstruct saw palmetto’s famous ability to help out with BPH, widening our scope to consider other patterns of pelvic stagnation and atrophy this herb can help us correct. We even look outside the reproductive system entirely, noting historical precedent for this herb as a digestive tonic and respiratory expectorant. Historical traditions, contemporary science, and our own direct experiences with the herb all provide helpful points of contact which help us draw a much fuller picture of the herb than “good for BPH”.Saw palmetto is a complex herb, with actions that can seem – at first glance – contradictory. Taking this in-the-round view of the herb helps us see it more clearly and resolve some confusion. This lesson goes beyond this one herb, though – we always need to be aware of our culture’s tendency for reductionism and putting herbs in neat boxes.Mentioned in this episode:Sabal in The History of the Vegetable Drugs of the U.S.P. by John Uri Lloyd (1911)Serenoa – Saw Palmetto in King’s American Dispensatory by Harvey Wickes Felter & John Uri Lloyd (1898)Serenoa in The Eclectic Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics by Harvey Wickes Felter (1922)Serenoa: Eclectic materia medica for Saw Palmetto – this includes text from Willam Bloyer (writing in the Eclectic Medical Journal, 1896), with commentary from Paul Bergner at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism (1997)Saw Palmetto in A Modern Herbal by M. An in-depth talk about Functional Medicine via the foundations of health, the language of the body and the intersections of humanity in the greater whole. This episode looks at the physical, metabolic and metaphoric causes of dis-ease and how we are being asked to return our bodies and our lives to inner and outer balance. KEY MOMENTS “For the modern body, in spite of the great diversity of different disease manifestations, there are common roots causes and key processes. There is a meta-language for that which really speaks to our current situation – disconnection and conflict.” “In relation to the human body, it is about returning to a sort of balance. And that balance speaks through the imbalance of dis-ease. So you can find your way back knowing how you’ve strayed and where the path has taken you. And for me that is a learning path. So it’s not about short cuts; it’s about feeling and understanding and finding a way home.” “My approach is to understand the dis-ease process because that will tell me what needs to be rebalanced. It’s a language. It’s the language of the body. Dis-ease is the body speaking.” “I really question the dogma that issues from these pronouncements about what a healthy diet looks like, especially when you look behind at who is invested in that particular dogma.” “There’s so much around addiction in our relationship with food. I think that’s a big one to begin to look at and clear out because the compulsion from addiction can override. So you need to have a flavour for what you’re being pulled to for addiction and comfort and what is the body speaking that it needs nutritionally.” “What is the discomfort? What is the despair? What’s the pain? What’s the sense of lack? There’s a beautiful opportunity to actually sit. Something is speaking and is wanting to be heard.” “All I have is a bit of a map. That map I can share with another. And it is absolutely working in collaboration with somebody. It feels like you’re working with somebody and there is a body there.” VALUABLE RESOURCES The Adventures Of Self Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the.adventures.of.self/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The.Adventures.of.Self ABOUT THE GUEST Nicole Freris, MBBChir, MRCP, MRCGP, trained in medicine at Cambridge. After completing her general practitioner (GP) training in London, she worked for 10 years as a doctor and health educator in the Brasilian Amazon. In the latter half of this period, she was a freelance researcher for Greenpeace and trained in Permaculture. On returning to the UK, she taught Permaculture Design and took a degree in Medical Herbalism at the Middlesex University. She has since developed and taught a core curriculum in “Restorative Medicine” as part of a professional herbal medicine qualification at Heartwood Education. She continues to work as a GP in London. Since her early years, she has been fascinated with the unfathomable and intricate complexity of the human frame and physiology, and the greater ecology we are part of. She is painfully aware of the epidemic of chronic diseases afflicting the modern body and has sought to understand and unravel the root causes and key processes that lead to imbalance and dis-ease. This exploration of the human terrain has been enabled by insights from science, as well as knowledge passed down from our forebearers and traditional peoples who sustain a balanced and nourishing relationship with the earth. It is her hope that this understanding might be a map, to help navigate our bodies and beings into a place of harmony and health. Kimberly Beck is the founder of Relational Rewilding in CO. Kimberly shares that she was obsessed with animals and nature as a child. Her passion grew into facilitating the relationship between people and nature, people and animals, and people and people in various ways. Kimberly has designed and led environmental programs as a Naturalist and a Certified Interpretive Guide. She would go earn a Master’s in Counseling from Colorado State University which began her path into healing others via Ecotherapy. Bio from the Relational Rewilding Website:  As a young child walking through Ohio oak-hickory forests, Kimberly would regularly ask: 'How can I teach others to love these woods as much as I do? How might people take care of these places? Can we heal here? Do people develop differently with more exposure to nature?' These internal questions have guided her life's work, and still continue today. Kimberly's passion is facilitating relationship between people and nature, people and animals, and people and people. As a naturalist, humane educator, eco-therapist, nature mentor and dog trainer, she considers herself to be living her childhood dreams. She attributes her relationship with nature as a primary protective factor in her own emotional and psychological resilience, and hence chose to blend nature and psychology in her work. Kimberly values helping others improve their health, confidence, relationships, and sense of belonging in the world by restoring the original kinship we humans share with nature. She believes the health of people is absolutely intertwined with the health of our ecosystems, and hopes that re-establishing natural, native connections will generate more compassionate attitudes and actions toward ourselves, one another, and the planet upon which we depend.  In addition to operating Relational Rewilding (founded in 2017), Kimberly currently works as coordinator and faculty for the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies, teaching nature-based approaches to therapy. She is also a contract instructor with Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Audubon Society and Evergreen Audubon Society.  She is on the advisory board for Outdoor Education at Red Rocks Community College. Kimberly holds a Master’s degree in Counseling from Colorado State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education & Plant Biology from Ohio University. She has been practicing nature-based and eco-therapy for 10 years . Kimberly designed and led environmental and humane education programs at state parks, outdoor education centers, and animal shelters throughout the country. She is a Master Naturalist, a Native Plant Master, and Certified Interpretive Guide. Kimberly has participated in continuing education programs through North American Institute of Medical Herbalism (now the Colorado School for Clinical Herbalism), The Foragers Path, Artemisia & Rue Herbalism, Somatic Wilderness Therapy Institute, Wildcraft Forest School, Wilderness Awareness School, 8 Shields Institute, and The Tracking Project - training in cultural and natural awareness, animal tracking, plant studies, herbology, bird language, primitive skills, community building, & Gestalt and nature-based therapy.  She lives in the foothills west of Golden, Colorado with her partner, 3 horses, and a diversity of surrounding wildlife. Today’s episode is brought to you by the NorthWest Herb Symposium. I had the pleasure of attending this wonderful event a few years ago and I gotta say it’s top notch. The location alone is worth the trip. It’s located at the Camp Casey Conference Center in beautiful Coupeville Washington.  Next year’s event, titled “Botanicals at the Beach” will be from August 23 – 26 2018. For more information you can head to NWHerbSymposium.com. Also, you can purchase recordings from last year’s event, as well as many other events from the symposium’s organizer’s website: www.treefarmtapes.com Today’s episode was recorded at the 2017 NorthWest Herb Symposium. It’s with none other than David Hoffmann. What can herbalism do as opposed to the hype? What actions are relevant, what tonics can support the various body systems. We will discuss acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from Sage to Huperzia. How do these herbs actually effect the aging body and mind. David, a Fellow of Britain’s National Institute of Medical Herbalists, has been a clinical phytotherapist for more than twenty-five years. He started his herbal practice in Wales, continuing at the Findhorn community in Scotland, and has been practicing in California since 1986. A long time activist in the environmental and peace movements, he ran for parliament in Britain for the Green party in 1983. He is one of the founding members and a past president of the American Herbalists Guild and is on the advisory boards of the American Botanical Council and HerbalGram. The author of seventeen books, including the highly regarded The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal, An Elders’ Herbal,Medical Herbalism and The Herbal Handbook, Hoffmann teaches phytotherapy throughout the English-speaking world and is currently a faculty member of the California School of Herbal Studies. He is also a visiting faculty member at Bastyr University, the California Institute of Integral Studies, the National College of Phytotherapy, and the Rocky Mountain School of Botanical Studies.

IMPORTANT: Cancer is a serious and very scary disease. I know firsthand from being with my mom through her journey and ultimately passing from cancer. A lot of people out there, from conventional doctors and researchers to very alternative people are pushing very dogmatic views of what cancer treatment should look like. I do not believe there is ONE treatment for cancer, nor that we will find a "CURE" for cancer. As we discuss below, Donnie and I believe that a holsitic approach using any and all tools and approaches is the best way to treat cancer. Cancer is not a do it yourself disease, so if you are a loved one are dealing with cancer, make sure you have a good team on your side ======== In this podcast Dr. Gerstmar & Donnie Yance discuss: -No medicines are bad, but we need to understand them, and when they are appropriate. There are people who get tremendous benefit from conventional medicine, those who they don’t help, and those who are hurt by those treatments. The same is true for all medicines -Three types of treatment for three types of cancer - Go-go (aggressive cancer = aggressive treatment), slow-go (in-between; medicines carefully considered and often treatments at lower doses or specific timing), no-go (passive, slow growing cancer = little to no treatment) -The fearful atmosphere of medicine & reasons oncologists often won’t consider alternatives -True cancer care - treating the person + treating the tumor -Cancer is not cancer. Not all cancer is the same, and each person with cancer should be treated individually. Genetics alone are not enough to create a treatment plan. Genetics have to be considered in the context of the whole person! -The nervous system is a big driver of cancer growth. Sympathetic mode drives the growth of cancer. Poor HRV (heart rate variability) is a predictor of poor cancer prognosis -Cancer must hijack the microenvironment (area around the cancer) to grow. It will be unable to grow or become problematic if it is unable to hijack the environment. We must retake control of the microenvironment - inflammation, immune system, pH, nutrients, blood clotting -The heart must be the driver and the brain must come in service to the heart -The history of herbal medicines in he US and in particular Eclectic medicine -Surgery shouldn’t necessarily be the initial treatment. You might do treatment for 6-8 weeks before doing surgery. Cancer is a systemic disease, even when the tumor is local. If whatever we’re doing is effective than the tumor is going to shrink Links: www.donnieyance.com www.mederifoundation.org Book: Adaptogens and Medical Herbalism by Donnie Yance at http://amzn.to/2hIcg8c At Aspire Natural Health we are experts at helping people with gut problems and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Neubauer is a naturopathic physician, was a medical coordinator at the Berkeley Free Clinic, has worked extensively with Natural Doctors International, and has studied with Karen Sanders, Michael Moore and Adam Seller. A “calling,” according to Paul, is something that “when you’re doing it, the universe conspires to make you succeed.” Paul and Tania, along with herbalist 7Song (Northeast School of Botanical Medicine), are leading a delegation to the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. This trip is open to anyone, no matter what your herbal or language background. It is an amazing opportunity for those who want herbal clinical experience. Paul and Tania discuss this opportunity in great detail, however, this interview will be of interest to everyone, as Paul discusses what a calling is, and some tips for those who might be interested in being a clinical herbalist. It’s a fascinating look at the state of herbalism from someone how has been doing this for nearly 40 years. I wanted to get this interview out for 2 reasons… 1) To share what I learned from Paul about finding one’s calling and 2) to spread the word about this trip, which will help a lot of people get quality, natural medical help.
