Hey Friend, in case youre new here, my name is Arlina and Ill be your host. Today youll hear from my friends Lane Kennedy andamp; Tamar Medford, as we discuss their new book Sobriety for Dummies. And in case you had the same reaction to the book title as I did, dont worry, I totally asked them about it. But before we jump in& I just wanted to share something that comes up for a lot of us in recovery, which is seeking external validation andamp; people pleasing. These are actually very common coping mechanisms that develop in childhood. When were growing up, we are dependent on the adults in our lives to take care of our physical and emotional needs. So if you grew up in a home where your needs were not met or the adults were dysfunctional, then we learn to deny our own needs in ways that appease our parents to get our needs met. This can lead to over achieving behaviors, people pleasing, codependency, and a heavy reliance on external validation. What this means is that we have a tough time recognizing and validating our own needs, wants and feelings. I actually wrote an article sharing my experience of how I am healing my own need for validation with some practical tips on how to let go of old destructive habits that I think youll enjoy. You can find the article at odaatchat.com. And in the spirit of cultivating a sense of self-love, follow me on IG for a free 30 day self-love challenge. Just do a search on Arlina Allen. Having a community of support has been instrumental in my recovery. When I was able to be a part of a group of like-minded people it changed everything. I was able to connect with people in ways I hadn't before because these people got me. They understood the crazy I was feeling and the best part is that they had solutions if I choose to take suggestions. If you're early on in sobriety and you currently do not have a community of people who can relate to the experience you're going through I strongly suggest you find one. It changed my life! When we get clean and sober we open ourselves up to feel that some of us have never chosen to deal with before. We turned to drugs and alcohol for our solution due to our inability to handle our emotions. Today, almost 10 years into my recovery I'm faced with a new experience. Something I haven't put much thought into before that has become a reality. Some days I wake up sad, angry, and confused and other days I'm happy and excited. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions that can get uncomfortable at times. Today I share my experience and journey of coping with grief in recovery. Do you want to Change Your Brain? Austin Linney is a former service industry veteran of 20+ years, turned serial entrepreneur, real estate investor, mindset, and business coach. He is the host of the weekly podcast, Construct Your Life With Austin Linney. When he's not building businesses, growing his expansive network of who's who in the leading industries, providing massive value each week with his podcast, or helping his coaching clients achieve a breakthrough, he can be found training for and competing in Ironman Triathlons across the country. In my early 20's I was wrapped up in a victim mindset that spiraled me downward into meth addiction that left me homeless for a short period of time. I kicked the hard drugs but then turned that addiction into a 20-year alcoholic spell. I have now been sober from all of those things for 2 years. I am the happiest I have ever been and also lost a total of 65 pounds. If you're an entrepreneur, wanting to start a business, wanting to improve your mindset through coaching or you just want to have a heart-to-heart conversation of how to overcome the odds, Austin can help you get where you want to go. Sterling grew up in poverty, got in the wrong crowd at an early age. Got his first felony at 15 and then 5 more before he was 19. Spent 3 years in prison, got out, and had to relearn how to adapt to society. Without that knowledge, it was a long journey. After almost a decade of hard drug abuse, homelessness and incarceration, and parole, he found his way out through entrepreneurialism. Education opened doors. Hard work and relationships opened even more. Now Sterling has a few small businesses and assets and a family that is proud of him. Now he's helping others to make the changes that can open the same doors for themselves. Many people assume that having a growth mindset means that you are willing to try something new and learn. In this episode, I talk about what it means in my own journey to have developed a growth mindset and some of the tools I use to continue to develop that mindset. Being a full-time entrepreneur, I know that I need to wake up each and every day and ask the universe for what I want to accomplish. I know my mission, my purpose and I don't let any challenges take me away from that no matter how hard things get. Do you want to Change Your Brain? I used to believe that the longer I stayed sober the easier things would get. What I realized in 2021 was that things can get a lot more difficult but what has changed is my ability to handle whatever life throws at me. In fact, 2021 was by far the most challenging year I have experienced yet. That being said, I can safely say it's also been the best year of my recovery and the most rewarding considering what I have had the resilience to move through. My resilience is getting stronger, my emotional intelligence has increased and I realize that I can endure a lot more than I previously thought. These are just some of the gifts of recovery. Forrest was born in Austin, TX in 1961 and his drug of choice was alcohol but definitely not limited to just alcohol. His sobriety date is 09/21/2010. Forrest spent his early childhood in Austin. In 1969 they moved 25 miles east of town where he still lives today. Forrest own and operate a metal fabrication and welding business. Passions include cooking, fishing, restoring old things and most importantly helping others. His addiction became active at age 12. He didn't fit in or feel loved as a child and he really didn't know how to deal with it. Another factor at this point in his life was his religious upbringing. Forrest would go to church weekly and all he ever got out of that was a long list of deeds for which he would be sent to hell for. At this point in his life he felt no love from his parents or God, didn't have any real friends and he was sad and scared. Learn more on today's show. Do you want to Change Your Brain? Have you ever wondered how you would get sober? Really sober? My next guest opens up about her recovery and how her lifestyle led to a life of drinking and using. My guest, Lane Kennedy, opens up about how "Mutual Aide saved her life!" Lane was blessed with a lifestyle that would cause most of us to have envy. On the outside, her career looked promising. She lived in a beautiful home in California. She had nice cars, 6 closets, 500 pair of shoes and a pedigree dog. But on the inside, she knew she needed help. Lane indicated that, "Her lifestyle said it was ok" to drink and to show up to work and sell homes. Lane needed to stop drinking but found it difficult. Her friends and clients drank and she knew that drinking was socially accepted. She believed drinking was a normal everyday activity but "what wasn't normal was the way I felt afterwards". Her friends held it together while she remained at home after a night of drinking throwing up, curled up in a ball hiding in her closet. She needed help and needed it now. Tune into the podcast to learn how Lane recovered from her addiction and is living her amends daily. Check out her podcast at: Recover Like A mother. Hemp has been used for thousands of years as a medicine to help with pain and inflammation in the body. It's fatty acid breakdown is similar to that of flaxseed thus it's omega three component makes it ideal for use as an anti-inflammatory. What hemp contains in addition to essential fatty acids is CBD (cannabidiol), a plant chemical that binds to receptors in our endocannabinoid system, a component of our nervous system, to relieve pain, reduce anxiety and inflammation. CBD, is one type of cannabinoid as there are approximately 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Catherine is here today with Lane Kennedy, The Bulletproof Coach! About Lane Kennedy Over the years I've come to know that I have a single intention, that intention is to help people. Simple, right? No fame, no glory, no outlandish recognition, simply helping people become better at who they are in the world. The past twenty years have been rife with practical experience, while mastering and acquiring knowledge that is required to live in today's overstressed tech'd world. I've been fortunate enough to spend hundreds of hours learning about hacking our human potential. I was one of the first women to go through Dr. Sara Gottfried's Hormone Cure practitioner course, learning the Gottfried protocol while gaining a deeper understanding of the female's delicate hormonal cascade, and the many imbalances that occur at any given time. Since I'm not one to stop learning, it was only an obvious choice to become a Certified Bulletproof Coach when fellow biohacker, Dave Asprey, opened the doors to a coaching practicum that has been mind blowing! What this all boils down to is this — I've had the opportunity to sit with people from around the world and listen to them unravel and heal from unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles, watch others gain independence and grow, help mothers regain control of their hormones, and find balance with the many obstacles of motherhood, and help men and women build million dollar businesses, and grow incredible communities. Yes, I help people, it's my job. You know when you go to a cocktail party or a networking event and that stranger asks you, “What do you do?” My answer is simple, it's this: “I help people mindshift into being more. Once you start making clear decisions in your life, everything will change. Want me to help you with that?” Find Out More About the Upgraded Woman Lane Kennedy on Facebook The Upgraded Woman - Website Lane Kennedy on Instagram @lanekennedylevy Lane Kennedy on Twitter @lanekennedy Lane on Pinterest Ready to find out how you can upgrade yourself?
