Hey Friend, in case youre new here, my name is Arlina and Ill be your host. Today youll hear from my friends Lane Kennedy andamp; Tamar Medford, as we discuss their new book Sobriety for Dummies. And in case you had the same reaction to the book title as I did, dont worry, I totally asked them about it. But before we jump in& I just wanted to share something that comes up for a lot of us in recovery, which is seeking external validation andamp; people pleasing. These are actually very common coping mechanisms that develop in childhood. When were growing up, we are dependent on the adults in our lives to take care of our physical and emotional needs. So if you grew up in a home where your needs were not met or the adults were dysfunctional, then we learn to deny our own needs in ways that appease our parents to get our needs met. This can lead to over achieving behaviors, people pleasing, codependency, and a heavy reliance on external validation. What this means is that we have a tough time recognizing and validating our own needs, wants and feelings. I actually wrote an article sharing my experience of how I am healing my own need for validation with some practical tips on how to let go of old destructive habits that I think youll enjoy. You can find the article at odaatchat.com. And in the spirit of cultivating a sense of self-love, follow me on IG for a free 30 day self-love challenge. Just do a search on Arlina Allen. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Lane and Tamar. =J

Having a community of support has been instrumental in my recovery. When I was able to be a part of a group of like-minded people it changed everything. I was able to connect with people in ways I hadn't before because these people got me. They understood the crazy I was feeling and the best part is that they had solutions if I choose to take suggestions. If you're early on in sobriety and you currently do not have a community of people who can relate to the experience you're going through I strongly suggest you find one. It changed my life! When we get clean and sober we open ourselves up to feel that some of us have never chosen to deal with before. We turned to drugs and alcohol for our solution due to our inability to handle our emotions. Today, almost 10 years into my recovery I'm faced with a new experience. Something I haven't put much thought into before that has become a reality. Some days I wake up sad, angry, and confused and other days I'm happy and excited. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions that can get uncomfortable at times. Today I share my experience and journey of coping with grief in recovery. Do you want to Change Your Brain? In my early 20's I was wrapped up in a victim mindset that spiraled me downward into meth addiction that left me homeless for a short period of time. I kicked the hard drugs but then turned that addiction into a 20-year alcoholic spell. I have now been sober from all of those things for 2 years. I am the happiest I have ever been and also lost a total of 65 pounds. Sterling grew up in poverty, got in the wrong crowd at an early age. Got his first felony at 15 and then 5 more before he was 19. Spent 3 years in prison, got out, and had to relearn how to adapt to society. Without that knowledge, it was a long journey. After almost a decade of hard drug abuse, homelessness and incarceration, and parole, he found his way out through entrepreneurialism. Education opened doors. Hard work and relationships opened even more. Now Sterling has a few small businesses and assets and a family that is proud of him. Now he's helping others to make the changes that can open the same doors for themselves. Many people assume that having a growth mindset means that you are willing to try something new and learn. In this episode, I talk about what it means in my own journey to have developed a growth mindset and some of the tools I use to continue to develop that mindset. Being a full-time entrepreneur, I know that I need to wake up each and every day and ask the universe for what I want to accomplish. I know my mission, my purpose and I don't let any challenges take me away from that no matter how hard things get. Do you want to Change Your Brain? I used to believe that the longer I stayed sober the easier things would get. What I realized in 2021 was that things can get a lot more difficult but what has changed is my ability to handle whatever life throws at me. In fact, 2021 was by far the most challenging year I have experienced yet. That being said, I can safely say it's also been the best year of my recovery and the most rewarding considering what I have had the resilience to move through. My resilience is getting stronger, my emotional intelligence has increased and I realize that I can endure a lot more than I previously thought. These are just some of the gifts of recovery. Forrest was born in Austin, TX in 1961 and his drug of choice was alcohol but definitely not limited to just alcohol. His sobriety date is 09/21/2010. Forrest spent his early childhood in Austin. In 1969 they moved 25 miles east of town where he still lives today. Forrest own and operate a metal fabrication and welding business. Passions include cooking, fishing, restoring old things and most importantly helping others. His addiction became active at age 12. He didn't fit in or feel loved as a child and he really didn't know how to deal with it. Another factor at this point in his life was his religious upbringing. Forrest would go to church weekly and all he ever got out of that was a long list of deeds for which he would be sent to hell for. At this point in his life he felt no love from his parents or God, didn't have any real friends and he was sad and scared. Learn more on today's show. Do you want to Change Your Brain? Have you ever wondered how you would get sober? Really sober? My next guest opens up about her recovery and how her lifestyle led to a life of drinking and using. My guest, Lane Kennedy, opens up about how "Mutual Aide saved her life!" Lane was blessed with a lifestyle that would cause most of us to have envy. On the outside, her career looked promising. She lived in a beautiful home in California. She had nice cars, 6 closets, 500 pair of shoes and a pedigree dog. But on the inside, she knew she needed help. Lane indicated that, "Her lifestyle said it was ok" to drink and to show up to work and sell homes. Lane needed to stop drinking but found it difficult. Her friends and clients drank and she knew that drinking was socially accepted. She believed drinking was a normal everyday activity but "what wasn't normal was the way I felt afterwards". Her friends held it together while she remained at home after a night of drinking throwing up, curled up in a ball hiding in her closet. She needed help and needed it now. Tune into the podcast to learn how Lane recovered from her addiction and is living her amends daily. Check out her podcast at: Recover Like A mother. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! This week my guest is Lane Kennedy. A mother in long term recovery she is a podcaster who has used meditation as a vital tool in her recovery journey. She now helps others to learn how to meditate. Lane quit drinking in 1996 so is 25 years in recovery. In this Episode Lane describes her drinking life as glamorous and great fun - until it wasn't Her drinking was inconsistent - she would sometimes only have two glasses - on other days she would drink to blackout She did notice that she drank differently from her friends Although she lived in a big house in Hollywood Hills and had lots of "stuff" but she wasn't happy - drank to figure out why She didn't have a specific "rock bottom" but knew her whole life was falling apart Some well meaning friends tricked her attending an AA meeting, where she heard the message of recovery for the first time It took her a year to get sober - up to 90 days it was really difficult and she missed alcohol which was her coping mechanism 9/11 changed her life - she left the US and joined a Buddhist retreat in Thailand - looking for safety She realised that in fact the only safety any of us will find is deep within ourselves - and meditation enables us to reach that place Meditation got her to the place she was looking for when she was drinking - a place of peace Lane now believes that meditation and mindfulness are keys to handling addiction She has a podcast called "Recover like a Mother" which includes episodes devoted to meditations We discussed the "mommyjuice" syndrome - and how motherhood is glamorised via social media We talked about the importance of sober influencers - Lane's podcast provides a platform for sober moms to spread the word Lane has a podcast and a website - recoverlikeamother.com Lane is thrilled about the rise of the Sober Curious movement which enables more people to find the space to try sobriety Joining Tribe Sober is a great way to start your Sober Curious journey - find out more on tribesober.com We'll put you on a 30 day alcohol free challenge so you can test your dependency Membership also allows you to find your people as we welcome you into our supportive community Just go to tribesober.com and hit the "join our tribe" button to read more about the benefits of membership More info Subscription membership for Tribe Sober is just R85 (£4/$6) a month - you can join up HERE To access our website click HERE If you would like a free copy of our "Annual Tracker" or our e-book "66 Days to Sobriety" please email janet@tribesober.com If you would like to come to our Saturday afternoon Zoom Cafe as a guest and meet our community just email janet@tribesober.com Episode Sponsor This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program. Have you been wondering what is wrong with you on the inside? I got to chat with Lane Kennedy today as we dive in and talk about how important it is to get down to the issues that are in your tissues. Lane shares about being in the fashion world and her transition into the coaching and mindfulness practice she does today. Lane got sober almost 25 years ago and talked about how just being sober wasn’t enough for her and for many people she has helped. Just recently she started opening up more about her recovery and she shares what kept her from speaking up more on the topic. Lane Kennedy is today’s no nonsense modern day, Calm Maker. She is a holistic practitioner, mindfulness teacher, DNA nerd and host of Recover Like A Mother podcast. She has been a meditator for over two decades and teaches publicly, and privately for Government Agencies, and Corporations in San Francisco and Abroad. As a seeker, Lane has sought to harness the power of human capacity. She became a graduate of the Neuroscience Academy of Australia, was one of the first graduates of the Human Potential Institute, and a Hormone Cure Practitioner. Lane became certified in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to complement her decades-long meditation practice. It started in Chicago, where Debra wrote and sang original musicals for her stuffed animals when she was very young. She began an illustrious theatrical career starring as Toto in a summer camp production of Wizard of Oz. Barely surviving head-to-toe fur in sweltering July heat, she already knew how to suffer for her art. https://debrawanger.com/ Debra studied acting at the nationally-acclaimed Piven Theatre Workshop with such talents as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and Jeremy Piven. Her vocal training began at the Northwestern University vocal department while still attending high school. She declined an opera scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory in order to study musical theatre at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM.) She took a quarter off to work for a few months in live theatre. Fifteen productions later, she returned to school and graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received a Masters of Fine Arts in musical theatre from San Diego State University, where she graduated Phi Kappa Phi as a Marion Ross Scholar. Debra has performed in regional theatres and cabaret clubs across the country, most frequently in Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, and South Florida. In Professionally Speaking at the Off-Broadway, The Miami Herald hailed her “a comic sparkplug.” Her role in Triumph of Love won a KPBS-TV Patté award. Her one-woman show My Nights With George, Kurt & Cole, (co-written and directed by comic genius, Phil Johnson) was featured at various venues throughout Southern California and won Best New Play and Best Actress at the 2003 San Diego Actors Festival, and the San Diego Playbill Billie Award for Best Actress in a musical. In 2019, Debra won a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award (Craig Noel) for Angels in America: Parts 1 & 2. She appears regularly in San Diego regional theatre, including: Angles in America, Handbagged, God of Vengeance at the La Jolla Playhouse, Hairspray, Footloose, Sound of Music, La Cage Aux Folles, Billy Elliot and White Christmas at San Diego Musical Theatre. Spring Awakening, My Fair Lady, On the 20th Century and Dogfight at Cygnet; Hamlet (Gertrude) at Intrepid; Titanic & Sunset Blvd. at Moonlight Amphitheatre; Permanent Collection at Mo’olelo; Full Monty (Vicki) at New Village Arts; Anything Goes! (Reno) Oliver! (Nancy) and Babes in Arms at Lyric Opera San Diego; Carousel and Sound of Music at Lawrence Welk; My Nights With George, Kurt & Cole (NCRT & 6th@Penn, AASD & Billie Awards); Debra studied at Tufts & CCM and holds a M.F.A. from SDSU. In this fast-paced world, meditation allows you to slow down and manage your stress. In fact, it's estimated that 10 minutes of meditation will buy you 10 seconds of pause before reacting in a stressful situation. When it comes to the benefits of meditation, the list is expansive. Meditation brings greater focus and clarity, a more flexible mindset, lower blood pressure, reduced depression and anxiety, and can be used to help with recovery from substance abuse. Listen as Lane Kennedy joins Dr. Taz to discuss the basics of meditation, including how long to practice, free apps with meditation guides, and tips for getting started.
Coaching and meditation go hand in hand. Not only is it one of the primary coaching tools I teach in Mama Bliss Coaching School, but the practice of it personally will allow you to weather the entrepreneurial storms that are going to test your tenacity on this career path. Let's face it, life in itself tests us on a regular basis so might as well muster up all the tools we can cram in that cute little steam-punk tool belt we got going on there labeled life and coaching skills. I was really excited to see my dear old friend and colleague Lane Kennedy has written a book just on that so I couldn't wait to get her on the show.

We are all given the same 24 hours in a day but it seems some people are able to do so much more with those hours than others. Lane Kennedy says it all comes down to presence, clarity and choice. Lane started on her health journey after getting very sick over 20 years ago and struggled to find answers or anything that helped. She decided one day that she was going to find the answers herself and “hacked” her own internal system. She started using bio-identical hormones, balanced her hormones, looked at her mental health and found relief, happiness and inspiration. Now, Lane is helping people all over “hack” their way to a healthier and healthier life.
Lane approaches health from alternative methods and teaches us how to find the best hemp oil, why you should take hemp oil and who hemp oil can benefit. She breaks down the new market of hemp oil and why you need to do your research before taking just any hemp oil brand. Sign up for my newsletter to receive inspiration, news, Beautycounter offers and more. Here are a few of the big topics we talked about: Kelly introduces Lane Kennedy. Lane shares her backstory on how she’s gotten to a place of deep listening and healing. What happened when Lane’s body began to break down after quitting drinking. The difference between data and intuition and how it affect Lane’s life. How Lane came to her journey of deep listening. Using meditation in a different way by using the breath and going deeper. Lane shares how the meditation practice allowed her body to speak ot her. Hemp oil and how it changed Lane’s life, by alleviating pain from her “dental chair accident.” Listening to her Inner Voice tell her it was okay to try this hemp oil helped change everything. Writing and a strong circle of women is how Lane is always questioning her stories, versus succumbing to them. Lane questioned her Inner Voice when she was involved in a startup because a great deal of money was involved. The ladies discuss Dave Asprey, biohacking and bulletproof coffee and how listening to what your body says is more important than what an influencer may say. Your body will tell you what it wants you to give it and what it needs to nourish. Kelly discusses her sensitivity to gluten. How Lane balances loving herself right now where she is, understanding her worthiness versus always wanting to be better. It’s hard, but you must know what YOU need in order to feel whole and happy. Lane shares what her Inner Voice is asking of her. In Lane’s Voice: “I feel like my intuition is super strong. I’ve tapped into that. It’s always been there. I either ignore it or I don’t. And what the data does - it’s a tool. It’s simply a tool that I use to reflect on.” “I learned how to meditate in a different way by using my breath and by going deeper within. It shifted my perspective on how I saw the world and how I saw the data and how I had conversations with doctors and people in my life.” “When I was on the [meditation] pillow or sitting, my body was calm and quiet. And my symptoms were calm and quiet.” “With chronic pain, there’s a depression that comes. You’re sleep-deprived. And there’s a disconnection that happens between me and my inner voice because I just wasn’t present. “There’s a difference between that voice saying it’s time to leave and the voice that said you’ve got this, you’re the boss! But I wanted to believe that the “you’ve got this, you’re the boss” voice because I was getting paid. I was getting the accolades. It looked good. Sometimes it’s hard to listen to the voice when it’s not gonna look the way you want it to in the moment.” “Listening to that inner voice of you don’t have to do what everybody else is doing. It’s been a huge change for me.” “It’s a priority to put my self-care and that self heart and love into me so that I can give back and be present and helpful and be of service to others.” Connect with Lane: Lane’s Website Lane’s “In Her Voice” Freebies Facebook Twitter Instagram
Hemp has been used for thousands of years as a medicine to help with pain and inflammation in the body. It's fatty acid breakdown is similar to that of flaxseed thus it's omega three component makes it ideal for use as an anti-inflammatory. What hemp contains in addition to essential fatty acids is CBD (cannabidiol), a plant chemical that binds to receptors in our endocannabinoid system, a component of our nervous system, to relieve pain, reduce anxiety and inflammation. CBD, is one type of cannabinoid as there are approximately 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The secret to getting the maximum benefit from hemp is in the delivery of it to the body, aka the absorption, and it's best achieved through liposomal delivery techniques. In this episode Doc J interviews Lane Kennedy Levy, the Upgraded Woman, about how hemp oil changed her life and why she is committed to educating the world on the benefits of hemp oil. What You'll Learn In Today's Episode: Why liposomal hemp oil provides the best results How long it takes for hemp oil to work How to dose hemp oil for maximal effect Why hemp oil is not going to get you high

Catherine is here today with Lane Kennedy, The Bulletproof Coach! About Lane Kennedy Over the years I've come to know that I have a single intention, that intention is to help people. Simple, right? No fame, no glory, no outlandish recognition, simply helping people become better at who they are in the world. The past twenty years have been rife with practical experience, while mastering and acquiring knowledge that is required to live in today's overstressed tech'd world. I've been fortunate enough to spend hundreds of hours learning about hacking our human potential. I was one of the first women to go through Dr. Sara Gottfried's Hormone Cure practitioner course, learning the Gottfried protocol while gaining a deeper understanding of the female's delicate hormonal cascade, and the many imbalances that occur at any given time. Since I'm not one to stop learning, it was only an obvious choice to become a Certified Bulletproof Coach when fellow biohacker, Dave Asprey, opened the doors to a coaching practicum that has been mind blowing! What this all boils down to is this — I've had the opportunity to sit with people from around the world and listen to them unravel and heal from unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles, watch others gain independence and grow, help mothers regain control of their hormones, and find balance with the many obstacles of motherhood, and help men and women build million dollar businesses, and grow incredible communities. Yes, I help people, it's my job. You know when you go to a cocktail party or a networking event and that stranger asks you, “What do you do?” My answer is simple, it's this: “I help people mindshift into being more. Once you start making clear decisions in your life, everything will change. Want me to help you with that?” Find Out More About the Upgraded Woman Lane Kennedy on Facebook The Upgraded Woman - Website Lane Kennedy on Instagram @lanekennedylevy Lane Kennedy on Twitter @lanekennedy Lane on Pinterest Ready to find out how you can upgrade yourself? Women Rocking Wall Street - A podcast dedicated to women in financial services
Episode 37: Giving Yourself Permission to Say “No” Guest: Lane Kennedy Welcome back! My guest this week has done it all. She is a woman who has many talents – especially when it comes to being an entrepreneur. Lane Kennedy has turned a startup into a million dollar business in less than 18 months, has built a lingerie company and has even worked for a non-profit company in Bangkok. She is a mom, fiction writer, podcaster, and business coach to women who are looking to start a business in the online market. Lane is one busy woman and she has a lot of demands on her time. Throughout her experiences, she has had to learn to say “no,” which is difficult for many of us. The nagging guilt of letting someone down, or hurting their feelings tends to leave us stretched thin on time and feeling strained and sometimes even resentful. However, a lot of us keep finding ourselves in the same situation time and time again – we want to say “no” but we hear ourselves saying “yes.” Many of us have a hard time setting boundaries and determining when it’s okay to say “yes” and when it’s okay to say “no.” The key is to ask yourself: is this going to serve my family or me? If you’re uncomfortable saying “no,” an alternative is “not right now,” or “no, but thanks for the opportunity.” However you choose to say it, the most important thing is that you start protecting your time and prioritizing. "My calling is to help people find their north star." - Lane Kennedy About: Lane Kennedy - Podcaster, Online Business Coach, and Founder of Game Changer Society Overview: Lane is a serial entrepreneur and is here to help you find your true calling in life. Highlights: Game Changer Society: This online community is for people out there who see the world a little bit differently. It's for people who live on the edge and are pushing the envelope. Lane's goal is to really help empower people, find their calling, use their voice, and to get out into the world. How Lane Can Help: She will help you implement organizational skills to help you find your calling. She wants to help you get to where you need to be in order to be successful. At the end of the day, Lane wants people to be satisfied. Work-Life Balance: Time is Lane's solution. After having her first child, she was feeling very overwhelmed and when her son was 18 months, she decided to leave her full-time job. She started focusing on a women's community she had started building when her son was born. In this community, she taught moms/women how to run their businesses, how to balance their term sheets, and marketing. She did that for awhile until she came to a point where it wasn't satisfying for her anymore. She realized her calling was helping people find their "north star." Goal: To have thousands of people coming together and building really great things. Lane says that we have to keep evolving and communicating face-to-face. Advice for Entrepreneurs: First, find out what your non-negotiable's are. Then making your schedule work around those non-negotiable's. For Lane, it's having dinner with her son four nights a week as well as leaving her phone out of her bedroom each night. She also doesn't look at her email until 9 am. This Bonus Episode I’m sharing an interview with serial entrepreneur Lane Kennedy today as a bonus episode. Although Lane isn’t involved in the yarn industry, she has a lot to share about managing your business while being a mom. Since I’m not a mom, I thought her perspective would be helpful for listeners who are! I also thought this episode would pair nicely with my interview with Amy Ramnarine earlier this week about how she planned out her maternity leave.
