Once again, a Bayern Munich star has been snubbed from a major award shortlist. Yes, that's right — Jamal Musiala hasn't made it onto France Football's top Ballon d'Or Top 30. The longstanding agenda against Bayern Munich continues. Ribéry 2013, Neuer 2014, Lewandowski 2020, 2021 ... and now this. Paul Wanner has been incredible for Heidenheim this season so far, and is starting to turn heads. The player might even receive a call up to the German National team soon. This could bode really well for Bayern Munich, who would be looking to replace the footballing legend that is one Thomas Müller. Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz has also been tearing it up for Germany alongside teammate Jamal Musiala. This leaves Bayern with a lot to ruminate on for the coming transfer windows. And gives us a lot to talk about in this flagship episode. In this episode, Schnitzel and Ineednoname discuss the following topics: Jamal Musiala's snub from the Ballon d'Or shortlist. How much these awards matter for the club's standing and attracting top players. Musiala's stellar form for Germany. Florian Wirtz's performances for Germany. Florian Wirtz or Paul Wanner? Would Wanner be the perfect Müller replacement? INNN and Schnitzel agree on multiple things (WHAT?!!!) From the BBC World Service: Nike is replacing Adidas as the sponsor of Germany’s national soccer team. Then, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pleading for more ammunition for Ukraine’s war efforts; German chancellor Olaf Scholz says he’ll back a plan to use money from frozen Russian assets to buy more weapons. And a Swedish pharmacy chain says it won’t sell anti-aging skincare products to kids under the age of 15.

A German great, Leonie is young and accomplished. She's a star on the German National team and there's no doubt in my mind we'll be seeing much more of Leo in the near future, possibly in Paris at the Summer Olympics and maybe even in New York with the Liberty. Leo has a great attitude, a competitors mentality and a soft spot for coffee and German chocolate.

Mizzou is an underdog against Tennessee following their loss to Georgia + German National Anthem
Dear listeners, we're coming to you on a Sunday, because the German national team is on a trip to the US, where they met the US men's national team in Hartford, CT and will face Mexico in Philly on Tuesday. In yesterday's matchup with Greg Berhalter's team, Julian Nagelsmann got a fun 3-1 win in his debut as "Bundestrainer". It was just what the doctor ordered for Germany who are looking to build some momentum going forward towards the European Championships in 2024. But the events on the pitch where overshadowed by Julian Nagelsmann's fashion choice. In a weak attempt at cultural appropriation he dressed in a plaid flannel shirt. Maybe he was trying to blend in with the local lumberjacks? Enjoy!
According to Dr Kaim, strategies are tricky things: flowery words describe the big picture and in the end, no one really knows what these words actually mean in practice. This is how many of the 76 pages of the first German National Security Strategy read. The Scholz government has not developed any fundamentally new guidelines for its foreign and security policy – it has written down what it has already planned and what is already reality. Much of the Strategy remains vague so that all parties of the coalition can rally behind it, with the Chancellor and four ministers using the presentation of the strategy to send a signal of unity. Nevertheless, the National Security Strategy expands the conception of "security" beyond just diplomacy and the Bundeswehr to also encompass electricity and water resources, pharmaceutical supplies, and the supply chains for raw materials that industry relies upon. But whether this is more than just words is something the German Government must now show in its implementation of the strategy. About the Speaker: Dr Markus Kaim is Senior Fellow in the International Security Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). He was Helmut Schmidt Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington 2019-2020. He has taught as a Visiting Scholar at the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa, as DAAD Professor for German and European Studies at the University of Toronto, and as Adjunct Professor of Foreign Policy and International Relations at the University of Konstanz. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Zurich, at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, and at the Bucerius Law School, Hamburg.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is officially underway and so far the tournament has put on a spectacle! The opener saw Ecadur bury the hosts Qatar thanks to a brace by Captain Enner Valencia! The German National team will face Japan on Wednesday and captain Manuel Neuer has spoken about the importance of sticking to a game plan and touched on how he believes that if his team can successfully play out from the back, the Japanese could be in trouble. Neuer, however, did acknowledge Eintracht Frankfurt's Kamada and how big of a threat he could be! Long story short, Japan is no slouch and Germany will have to be careful to not become complacent. Hansi Flick has hinted that 7 Bayern Munich Players could start this match and considering there has been a loud voice of unhappiness from the team about the timing, one would think that this German side could gel quite nicely, considering the short gap between the domestic season and the World Cup! Neuer and his fellow European Captains have had to halt the breaks on a certain move, regarding the '1Love' captain's armbands. The captains agreed that they would support LGBTQ rights by wearing these armbands, but FIFA has restricted this by threatening point docking, yellow cards, and sanctions! Ovbulsy some regions in the world are more closed-minded than others, but FIFA has always said that no political advances are allowed to be made on the itch! On the latest episode of the Bundesliga Connection, the 2022 FIFA World Cup has begun and injuries have already hit some teams! Hansi Flick and his German side have commented on the timing of the tournament and FIFA has threatened punishments!

With The Bundesliga getting some friendly matches underway, a few shock results came from this past weekend, with Bayern Munich losing to FC Koln 3-2, with Bayern not fielding a full-strength team. Another shock result was the newly promoted VfL Bochum overpowered Borussia Dortmund 3-1. Dortmund were without Jadon Sancho who has been signed by Manchester United, as well as Erling Haaland. In the latest episode of The SL Podcast's “The Bundesliga Connection,' German football expert and DW Sports correspondent Kres Harrington breaks down the pre-season friendlies and poses the question, ‘does this mean that the playing field is becoming even?' Kres also talks about the racial abuse hurled towards the German National team which saw them leave the pitch in protest.

Mr. Julius Tabert is a black belt of the old school. Member of the German National karate competition team in the 1980s, he grew up grinding the proverbial 12 miles uphill (both ways) to train in traditional martial arts. He went on to win international kumite championships, and has since become an American citizen and raised two kids through to black belt. Mr. Tabert continues to embody the spirit of a karateka in family, business, and life philosophy.
The Harz Mountains once divided East and West Germany, but today there's a popular national park there. Where barbed wire once stood, a primeval forest is growing. Now climate change is posing serious challenges.

Hour 1 of the program this week features a localized view at some of the biggest stories of the week, including the anniversary of the passing of the great Terry Fox; as well, plenty of discussion on the failure of the German National team to advance in the World Cup.
In this podcast Darcy Norman, Director of AS Roma and current Performance Advisor to the German National team joins Stephen Smith to challenge the view of a home-continent advantage. After their historic World Cup win in 2014 in Brazil, Darcy shares how the German team's wise investments off the field helped them to succeed on the field. Will these same tactics pay off in their 2018 pursuit? Listen now and let us know what you think!
It's far more interesting to talk about a loss than it is to chat about wins for Bayern Munich, so the pair treat this (relatively) short podcast as such. First up is the standard HSV butt-kicking that FCB have handed down over the last couple of seasons: Is this the year the clock actually stops in Hamburg? Is losing them to 2. Bundesliga a great loss? While Thomas Mueller had a fantastic match, is Hamburg the correct team for him to be judged on? Next the duo travel to the seething crowds in Istanbul, but sadly, with Bayern being up 5:0 in the first leg, the result was already a foregone conclusion. But, wait! The star of the show was a cat! (And no, to all who asked, it was not Susie's cat.) The loss to Leipzig brings up plenty of questions from Jupp Heynckes' selection, to what in the world was going on with Sebastian Rudy, but the one thing that was definitely agreed on by both Maurice and Susie was that Bayern wholly deserved to take a loss here. Of course this comes from a place of extreme privilege noting that Bayern will be holding the Meisterschale very soon. Segueing nicely from there, the pair ask some legitimate questions about Joachim Loew's German National team selection, like: Why was Rudy called up? There's the usual banter over “who would you rather?” as the DFB now will truly start to take some shape with the side they'll bring to Russia. Thank you, as always, for listening in! We'll rejoin you for a round-up after the friendlies with the hope that no one gets hurt before getting back into the heart of the season. Mia San Mia!

The link between emotional stress and an enhanced risk of cardiovascular death is well established. In particular, sports events such as soccer matches are capable of provoking strong emotions, which might cause a failure of the cardiovascular system, and thus a peak of death numbers in the population. Now a study published in JECH has examined the number of deaths in Germany on match days of the national soccer team during a long-term period including several tournaments. Editor Jim Dunn talks to lead author Daniel Medenwald, Institute of Medical Epidemiology, Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg. Diet and physical activity before and during pregnancy affect short- andlong-term health of mother and child. The energy needs at the end ofpregnancy increase only by about 10% compared to nonpregnant women. Anexcessive energy intake is undesirable since maternal overweight andexcessive weight gain can increase the risks for a high birth weight andlater child overweight and diabetes. Maternal weight at the beginning ofpregnancy is especially important for pregnancy outcome and childhealth. Women should strive to achieve normal weight already beforepregnancy. Regular physical activity can contribute to a healthy weightand to the health of pregnant women. The need for certain nutrientsincreases more than energy requirements. Before and during pregnancy, foods with a high content of essential nutrients should bepreferentially selected. Supplements should include folic acid andiodine, iron (in case of suboptimal iron stores), the omega-3 fatty aciddocosahexaenoic acid (in case of infrequent consumption of ocean fish)and vitamin D (in case of decreased sun exposure and decreasedendogenous vitamin D synthesis). Pregnant women should not smoke and notstay in rooms where others smoke or have smoked before (passivesmoking). Alcohol consumption should be avoided, since alcohol can harmunborn children.
