Episode 2466: Sarah Vowell tells the Untold Story of Public Service

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2025 42:26

So who, exactly is government. It's the question that Michael Lewis and an all-star team of writers address in a particularly timely new volume of essays. Who is Government? According to the Montana based Sarah Vowell, author of “The Equalizer”, an essay in the volume about the National Archives, government enables all American citizens to find stories about themselves. Vowell praises the modesty of most government employees. But she warns, the work of public servants like the National Archives' Pamela Wright is anything but modest and represents the core foundation of American democracy. Vowell's message is the antidote to the chainsaw. Essential listening in our surreal times. Here are the five Keen On America takeaways in this conversation with Vowell:* The National Archives as a democratic resource: Pamela Wright's work at the National Archives focused on digitizing records (over 300 million so far) to make them accessible to all Americans, regardless of where they live. This democratization of access allows people to bypass intimidating physical buildings and access their history from anywhere.* Public servants are often modest and unsung: Sarah describes how government workers like Wright tend to be modest, team-oriented people who focus on doing their job rather than seeking recognition. This stands in contrast to more visible or self-promoting public figures.* Personal connections to national archives: The conversation reveals how Americans can find their own family stories within government records. Sarah discovered her own family history, including her grandfather's WPA work and connections to the Cherokee Nation's Trail of Tears through archival documents.* Government's impact on opportunity: Sarah emphasizes how government programs like the Higher Education Act of 1965 created opportunities that changed her family's trajectory from poverty to professional careers through access to public education and financial assistance programs.* The interconnectedness of government services and American life: The conversation concludes with Sarah's observation about how government services form an "ecosystem of opportunity" that impacts everything from education to outdoor recreation jobs in Montana, with each part connected to others in ways that aren't always visible but are essential to how society functions.Sarah Vowell is the New York Times bestselling author of seven nonfiction books on American history and culture. By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers personal, often humorous accounts of American history as well as current events and politics. Her book, Lafayette in the Somewhat United States, explores both the ideas and the battles of the American Revolution, especially the patriot founders' alliance with France as personified by the teenage volunteer in George Washington's army, the Marquis de Lafayette. Vowell's book, Unfamiliar Fishes is the intriguing history of our 50th state, Hawaii, annexed in 1898. Replete with a cast of beguiling and often tragic characters, including an overthrown Hawaiian queen, whalers, missionaries, sugar barons, Teddy Roosevelt and assorted con men, Unfamiliar Fishes is another history lesson in Americana as only Vowell can tell it – with brainy wit and droll humor. The Wordy Shipmates examines the New England Puritans and their journey to and impact on America. She studies John Winthrop's 1630 sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” and the bloody story that resulted from American exceptionalism. And she also traces the relationship of Winthrop, Massachusetts' first governor, and Roger Williams, the Calvinist minister who founded Rhode Island – an unlikely friendship that was emblematic of the polar extremes of the American foundation. Throughout she reveals how American history can show up in the most unexpected places in our modern culture, often in poignant ways. Her book Assassination Vacation is a haunting and surprisingly hilarious road trip to tourist sites devoted to the murders of presidents Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley. Vowell examines what these acts of political violence reveal about our national character and our contemporary society. She is also the author of two essay collections, The Partly Cloudy Patriot and Take the Cannoli. Her first book Radio On, is her year-long diary of listening to the radio in 1995. She was guest editor for The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2017. Most recently she contributed an essay for Who Is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service by Michael Lewis (Riverhead, March 18, 2025). Vowell's thirty years as a journalist and columnist began in the freewheeling atmosphere of the weekly newspapers of the 1990s, including The Village Voice, the Twin Cities' City Pages and San Francisco Weekly, where she was the pop music columnist. An original contributor to McSweeney's, she has worked as a columnist for Salon and Time, a reviewer for Spin, a reporter for GQ, and a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, where she covered politics, history, education and life in Montana. She was a contributing editor for the public radio show This American Life from 1996-2008, where she produced numerous commentaries and documentaries and toured the country in many of the program's live shows. Her notable side projects have included a decade as the founding president of 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring and writing center for students aged 6-18 in Brooklyn; producing a filmed oral history series commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Montana Constitutional Convention of 1972; and occasional voice acting, including her role as teen superhero Violet Parr in Brad Bird's Academy Award-winning The Incredibles, and its sequel, Incredibles 2, from Pixar Animation Studios.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Super excited to post this fun, entertaining and informative chat with LEE AARON as we go deep into her entire career. A recent inductee into CANADA'S WALK OF FAME, she is one of Canada's most iconic vocalists; a songwriter, producer, and fearless re-inventor.  Our chat includes how, at the age of 19, she released her first album THE LEE AARON PROJECT and how in 1984 she wrote METAL QUEEN which solidified her as a trailblazer for women in rock. Over the years it has become an enduring anthem of empowerment for men and women alike. We then chat about how Aaron went on to work with producers like BOB EZRIN (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd) and PETER COLEMAN (Blondie, Pat Benatar), with stories about later releases 1989's BODYROCK and 1991's SOME GIRLS DO, which both reached MULTI-PLATINUM status and included chart-toppers like “Whatcha Do To My Body” and “Hands On.” She's shared stages with Heart, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Suzi Quatro, Sinead O'Connor, Mötley Crüe, Van Morrison, and more. Eighteen albums into her illustrious career, including 10 JUNO nominations, Aaron was also honoured with a permanent star on the ARTS WALK OF FAME in her former hometown (Brampton) for her contribution to Canadian Music. After a long hiatus to raise her family and a successful venture into jazz, our chat continues about how Aaron blazed back onto the scene in 2016 with the FIRE and GASOLINE and DIAMOND BABY BLUES, garnering rave reviews. I had the honour of co-managing her at this time with long time manager Pierre Paradis. With a wealth of new original material, she has since released another 5 albums, all of which she self-produced: a Christmas album, a live album and 3 studio albums: RADIO ON! (2021), ELEVATE (2022) and her latest release TATTOO ME (2024) [all recorded with Sean Kelly (guitar), John Cody (drums) and Dave Reimer (bass), who will be on tour doing dates in Canada and Europe this summer].

Here's a special bonus episode for y'all – a wonderfully frank discussion with Jonathan Hertzberg, founder of boutique repertory film label Fun City Editions (and its self-proclaimed one-man-show). Two of the films he helped re-release were screened at the Trylon in January 2022: WALKING THE EDGE (1983) and RADIO ON (1979). This weeks joint A Place For Film/Physical Media Isn't Dead, It Just Smells Funny episode is a special one. Artist and graphic designer Drusilla Adeline made her way down to the IU Cinema to chat about her work as an artist designing some of the best and most instantly recognizable work for distributors like Criterion, Kino Lorber, Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome and Fun City Editions. She discusses her non-traditional art background and then dives into the wonderful period of discovering cinema in her youth and how that opened her world as a queer woman. Things then turn to discussion of her latest collaboration with Jonathan Hertzberg and Fun City Editions with their latest release, Radio On. It's was an honor to have who is essentially the "Cal Schenkel of Criterion" on the podcast and also just a lovely evening of gushing about what movies mean to two cinephiles from Indiana. You can check out more of Drusilla's work at her website: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/ You can order Radio On from Fun City Editions through Vinegar Syndrome: https://vinegarsyndrome.com/products/radio-on-fun-city-editions

Believe it or not, I've been doing these reviews for over a year at this point and it's been lovely watching how much it's all grown. This originally started with me desperately wanting to review the Criterion Collection's The Complete Films of Agnès Varda boxset and it has grown into something I couldn't imagine. Over the past 12 months, this has gone from just the lovely folks over at Kino Lorber and the Criterion Collection to also working with other lovely folks over at Arrow Video, Fun City Editions, GKIDS, Code Red, MVD Entertainment, Synapse Films, and Cohen Film Collection to help bring awareness to the wide world of well-curated and pristinely-packed cinema you could experience from the comfort and safety of your home with no more than a TV and a Blu-ray player (no internet required). This started as a way to keep people engaged with repertory and arthouse titles while theaters were closed and tech companies continued to gobble up the scope of cinema, but it's now evolved into blog discovery and being intentional and passionate about cinema I consume. It's been great hearing all the feedback over the past 12 months and getting to hear from people who found this column by chance. I love doing it and I hope you guys still like listening to and reading it. So what better way to celebrate a one-year anniversary than with the addition of two new distributors! From the UK but bearing “All Region” gifts comes Imprint Films with its releases of Basil Dearden's penultimate film, The Assassination Bureau starring late greats Oliver Reed, Telly Savalas, and of course Diana Rigg, a romp about assassins who clearly don't understand there are more efficient ways to kill a person than bombs (more on that later). They also have released a handsome boxset containing both the 1951 Anthony Asquith/Michael Redgrave and 1994 Mike Figgis/Albert Finney adaptations of Terrence Rattigan's The Browning Version. Also making their debut is the long-awaited and oft-asked-for Vinegar Syndrome! We're starting off with their exclusive release of the very exciting reconstruction of the nearly lost and soon-to-be-cult-favorite New York Ninja. We also have our usual suspects with Kino Lorber giving us releases of director John G. Avildsen and composer Bill Conti's unlikely but welcome follow-up to Rocky, Slow Dancing in the Big City starring unlikely romantic lead Paul Sorvino. John Huston's Freud biopic starring Montgomery Clift and Susannah York makes a welcome appearance, which prompts me to once again think about what makes a biopic work artistically in the first place. There is also the season 1 release of Rod Serling's horror-tinged Twilight Zone follow-up Night Gallery. Arrow Video brings us two welcome releases for cinephiles who have their sights set on lesser-known Japanese genre cinema: Gamera director Noriaki Yuasa's adaptation of Kazuo Umezu's manga “Hebi shōjo (Snake Girl)” into a horror film aimed to traumatize children everywhere, The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch, and there's also the genre-bending mash-up that is Shinji Somai's Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, which somehow threads the needle between quiet coming-of-age drama, yakuza movie, and Japanese “idol movie.” Finally, we have my pick of the month from Fun City Editions with their recent release of Christopher Petit's New German cinema-inspired and new wave-scored British road movie Radio On, a gem I hope won't remain hidden for long. After a year of doing this, I hope some of you have found something you've enjoyed that you would have otherwise missed or overlooked, and if you haven't yet, I hope this month can change that. You can read the rest of the written reviews on the IU Cinema Blog, here: https://blogs.iu.edu/aplaceforfilm/

We are really excited to focus an episode around the BFI Blu-ray release of Chris Petit's existential British road movie Radio On as it's a film that we had talked about for a long time. Alongside this, it gave us the perfect excuse to bring on one of our original supporters and true friend of the show, Mark Jenkin. Mark kindly took the time out from editing his new feature Enys Men, to explore why Radio On is one of his most influential films. Indeed, there is no one better to talk about the handmade sensibility of the film along with the combination of its unique aesthetics of place and time and its abstracted subjectivity of characters alienated from their social reality.  We also discuss the film's almost singular place in British film history and examine how this is related to its European art-house sensibility, particularly in terms of the links to Wim Wenders and New German Cinema. We also discuss the way the film is structured musically, with signature Bowie tracks along with the electronic futurism of Kraftwerk and even Sting popping up to give an Eddie Cochrane tribute. There is also the question of how the film is one of the more idiosyncratic road movies, one without a specific motivation or destination, and an ending that is sublimely ambiguous and maybe even strangely uplifting. Shownotes John Patterson's Guardian article - A Film Without a Cinema Oliver Lunn - BFI article on How Britain has changed since post-punk classic Radio On You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Welcome to a very special cross-over episode of On the Nose! (Perfume on the Radio - On the Nose) Saskia Wilson-Brown (of the esteemed Institute for Art & Olfaction) and I were lucky enough to interview five talented individuals, all of whom have had experience with scent & sound in one way or another. We start with Saskia interviewing me, so you get to know how I connect the two mediums while touching on the vibrational theory of both. Then we had a fascinating conversation with Peter de Cupere, whose work intersects with technology, explains what the Odophone is and “shows” us some of his futuristic gadgets and more! YoYo Fearless gave us really great insight into how status and scent are related in hip hop, putting us in the mind of a performer as well as if flow and scent have anything in common. Heather D’Angelo shared her thoughts on how scent & sound are connected, with lots of experience as a member of the band Au Revoir Simone. While Chavalia Mwamba, also a perfumer and musician, talks about using music to process grief, breaks down the notes and some of the perfume lingo we use, all of which happen to connect with music. Finally, we end with Kaya Sorhaindo, whose work with many artists from all sorts of mediums paved the way for many multi-sensory ideas, his perspective as a creative director brings us full circle. Recorded on May 7th, this episode feature Joe Tierney & Scott Rymer. Joe is an old Sparta buddy who now lives out in Roseville, California and works for Oracle. Joe's dad, Tom Tierney owned the Speakeasy in Sparta, NJ, where Old Crow basically became the house band...while in high school! Joe talks about those early days of the "Speakeasy Beer Blasts", his first job in San Francisco...a Deadhead's dream job, working security for Wolfgang's, Bill Graham's private club, and his career in telecommunications. Scott Rymer joins the conversation and tells us about his and Brady's early childhood influences and how music became a big part of their lives way back in elementary school. Scott pursued an acting career as From Good Homes was getting going, but was along for the whole journey, first as a fan, supporter and brother, and eventually rejoining the band providing tech support for six years in the 1990's. This is a great glimpse back to the high school days and some stories from someone who was there for the whole ride! This episode features a version of "How Long" from Bogies, 11/16/90, and "Radio On" from Tinker Street, 11/28/92.
