Become part of the “Science of Sport” Discourse community via Patreon.Show notesThis week on Spotlight, we take a tour through some of the big stories in sport and sports science right now—from race tactics and concussion protocols to doping ethics, expert credibility, and how we identify and develop talent. We start with a lively discussion on the Giro d'Italia and that gravel stage. Was it thrilling unpredictability—or dangerous chaos? As the General Classification gets a dramatic shake-up, we debate whether the pursuit of entertainment justifies what some see as random, unfair risk and compromised race integrity. Do stages like this belong in a Grand Tour, or are they an unwelcome injection of chance into a sport built on precision and control? From there, we shift to cycling's ongoing concussion challenges. Jonas Vingegaard's recent comments compel questions about whether current policies do enough to manage brain injuries. Despite a policy that asks multiple people in the race to identify possible cases, the sport appears to be struggling to accurately identify who gets tested, when and how. Are critical medical decisions still slipping through the cracks because the wrong people, with misaligned incentives, are being asked to make them under pressure? Then it's time for our first featured topic: the evolution of the Enhanced Games. With swimmer James Magnussen chasing a chemically-aided world record and a million-dollar prize, we unpack the ethical and medical dangers of performance enhancement. What are the risks—for athlete health, for fairness, and for the messages it sends to the next generation?Next, we ask: How do you know who to trust? In an age of slick communication and pseudo-expertise, we explore the credibility of experts, and discover why true experts often sound less confident, not more. Ross explains how confidence can be a red flag, and why uncertainty and nuance are often markers of real scientific thinking. Finally, we dive into the messy reality of Talent ID. Ross explains four common errors—especially the “ghosts” created when resource-strained systems make early, high-stakes decisions that can harm both performance and people. We close with a brief segment on doping in Ironman, and why the “contaminated meat” excuse likely doesn't hold up—though science says it's not entirely impossible.LinksVingegaard on his concussion omissionThe UCI Concussion Policy that identifies all the right people to call for tests, but that frequently seems not to achieve thisDavid Epstein's recent article on fact checking and the illusion of expertiseOne example of the research studies used to sell BPC157, despite being in rats and showing nothing of the sort of promises companies make Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. A recruitment specialist says we've likely lost a number of our already small pool of skilled workers. More than 130,000 people moved out of the country in the year to April, the highest on record according to Stats NZ figures. A record 81,200 New Zealand citizens made up the majority of the leavers. Talent ID Director Kellie Hamlett told Mike Hosking that these departures won't be helping our skills issue. She says it comes down to the fact there's more demand for skills than we have skill to fill. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is Episode 49 of Beyond Top 10 that continues our focus on the coach-athlete relationship that sets the foundations for The Secrets to Optimal Performance Success. Building on Part's 1 to 3, today's episode is our BIGGEST to date as it's packed with all key elements with a focus on pressure. Looking at the role of social media to referring back to MySpace and the newer Topicthread, the role of negative noise and susceptibilities when on social media along with a personal recount of re-introducing Beyond Top 10 Tennis. Flashbacks feature mobile phones to now and how pressure has various implications with our inner circle a prime hunting ground. We then take a look at the scientific community and how to develop a Top 10 Tennis Ranking and ask the question: who deserves a seat at your table? Behaviours are then brought to the surface and how coaches can be responsible for both good and bad behaviours that players develop and how to be more mindful of developing 'good' behaviours. A big revisit then follows of this pivotal Chapter from hiring and firing your coach, why some of the Top 300 get stuck and don't make it into the Top 100 with a scientific overlap to how Talent ID contributes to pressure in players before piecing it all together! Governing bodies in junior tennis have traditionally relied on talent ID to determine where to allocate their financial and coaching resources. Players as young as 8 years old would get "tapped" by the organization based on guesses made about their future size, commitment to the sport, and upside potential. As we know, that has led to many mistakes over the years with some children being the Chosen Ones then burning out due to over-playing or injuries and other children being denied coaching and financial resources well before they had a chance to grow into their potential. In this week's podcast, Todd Widom discusses the limitations of traditional tennis talent identification. He argues that the current system of identifying talent fails to account for the differences between players and their individual journeys. He also explains why tennis players need to be evaluated more holistically and how to create a better system of talent identification. Todd and I chat about the factors to consider when trying to decide who will "make it" and who won't, and why Talent ID is such an inexact science. We present several different schools of thought and what parents should consider when deciding whether to invest their time and money in expensive coaching and tournament play. To contact Todd or to get information on his training, you can reach him at todd@twtennis.com. If you aren't already, be sure to follow him on Facebook and Instagram as well. Oliver Gage is the Director of Football at the Canadian Premier League and has a growing reputation for basing his footballing philosophy on a successful evidence-based approach to the sport and player development. Previously Head of Performance at the University of Virginia and Head of Performance Analysis and Technical Recruitment at Houston Dynamo, Oliver joined the Canadian Premier League as Head of On-Field Performance and Recruitment in 2019 before becoming Director of Football a year later. The transfer policy implemented mandated teams sign four of their seven allowed foreign footballers through a league-run recruitment process that approved or rejected certain players, proactively recruited on behalf of clubs and offered teams players the league had secured. Although controversial and unique, other leagues have started to consider introducing a similar strategy following numerous success stories. In our conversation today we cover talent identification, player recruitment, surviving COVID as a new league, and ensuring that players are not overlooked during the critical ages of 16-22. Emma White, who grew up in Duanesburg, is now in Colorado Springs training for the Tokyo Olympics. She started her journey as a competitive road and cyclocross cyclist, following her older brother, Curtis. At 16, she made the junior boys' team — those seven boys, now men, are still her best friends — and turned professional at 18. In 2018, she was invited to a Talent ID camp for USA Cycling. When she was told she had a chance at the Olympics, White went for it. After she and her teammates won the world championship in Berlin in 2020, they were primed for the Olympics — only to be gutted, delayed a year because of the pandemic. She has kept her balance after the suicide of a close friend and teammate, and she relies on the humanity of her coach. White and her teammates devote their days to rigorous training, followed by sauna sessions, without water, to get their bodies used to the discomfort they expect in Tokyo. Emma White is poised to win. — Photo from Emma White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode Derek discusses living in America, his high school season, describes what Game Day "Olympic Style" is like and how that relates to youth talent, talent identification & the path less travelled.

Through my own experiences I have an interest and passion for talent development and especially late developers I was surrounded by people who knew more than me – so wanted to know more! I developed an obsession with the sport. If couldn't get the experience then I would make it I sent my CV to every Rugby League club as I wanted a job in development. Don't worry about being cheap (not being paid a great deal) at the start [of your career]. It will change in time Go where you can get the opportunity. There have been many times I have sat their and gone ‘how have I got this (job)?' There were time I felt desperately out of my depth Your qualification may say you have the ability to get you through the door – but its not that, that gets you through the door. Its all the other stuff that you are willing to do Sport is a pastime that millions love – so it becomes competitive. You have to make yourself stand out from the crowd through your own efforts. My work ethic stood me out – nobody was working harder at it than me. The better you get the more chance you have of being lucky Imposter syndrome has always been and issues and is still and issue now. Be confident in what you do know – put forward what you know and don't blag or lie. Develop great people skills He frames it as ‘he is a 100 cap international at thinking about what he does' Listen to people you don't agree with and develop an understanding of why they think ‘that' You have got to be really comfortable with mistakes and let them happen If you try to stop every mistake you are killing learning left right and centre. Courtesy of David Faulkner – Fail Fast. Try something, recognise when it's not going right and change it. Make mistakes with the best of intentions. Talent development is like ‘Indiana Jones trying to find the Holy Grail'. There is no single answer to how to produce world class athletes. The questions I always ask is -Why (the rationale) and how you going to do it? Never you cant! Much more important than the rules are the KEY/CORE PRINCIPLES Will what we do make the player better or the environment in which the player sits better? I build a philosophy around happiness and contentment. He opportunity at the Women's FA was a ‘miss it and miss out opportunity'. I left with no bridges burnt at the RFL - as I may need or want to go back at some stage I found out about people – do my reading. If there is a source of knowledge then I know to ask lots of questions. I work to a core principle – you are either ALL in or you're not. If you are all in then give everything you have got. Do what makes you happy – we all want to jump out of bed in the morning with a spring in our step. Some of the stories I can tell and experiences I have had are astonishing – go an make them! My work ethic is getting me somewhere – possibly beyond what I thought my talent deserves. I will take it though. Talent development and Talent Id is like panning for gold. A lot of sifting is required to find what you are looking for The vast majority of the academy managers job is to manage disappointment as 98% of the players in the system will likely not fulfil their dreams I hurts me when I hear about broken players – I see it as the journey has not been managed very well Be open to how your story ends – write your own chapters. As soon as you are not happy you have to look at what is your next step If you get everybody using their skill sets and everyone is happy then that is when the organisation or team will really start to fly Happy people work well – constrained people never do I have a notebook where I write down peoples names and details about them, so when I speak with them I have something to speak and connect with them on. I have been known to wear my feelings on my face – it has caused me problems in the past. Enjoy yourself along the way because when you get ‘there' it might not be what you'd though it would be. Happier now than I have ever been but 10 years ago couldn't see as far as next week – it was a deeply difficult time. Back then when I hit the ‘bottom' I put my hand up and asked for help Mental Health challenges - Trying to be something for another reason Quick fire questions: The books that you would recommend are. The Way of Zen (Vintage Spiritual Classics) by Alan Watts The Shack: THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER by Wm Paul Young From Hull to Hell and Back by Lee Crooks In one sentence – What advice would you give to your teenage version of yourself? Don't worry Enjoy yourself Be happy Whos' Sport Story would you be really interested in hearing? Flt Kerry Bennett from the RAF ( Mum on a programme to be an Astronaut) Coaching questions I would like to pose: 1 What efforts do you take or could you take to ‘make yourself stand out from the crowd' 2 What are you a ‘100 cap international ‘at? What would you like to be a 100 cap international at? 3 What would you do if there was no such thing as money? How would you fill your time?
