I (Pastor Joel) had the privilege of interviewing Rob Bell about his new book, Where'd You Park Your Spaceship? An Interplanetary Tale of Love, Loss, and Bread. In our discussion, we talk about love, loss, and bread--including the ways that ungrieved grief can keep us from being truly seen. Rob currently hosts the RobCast, and has also authored books like Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith and Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. All of his books can be found on his website: robbell.com. Additionally, he wrote and was featured in the series of NOOMA videos: short, captivating films about life and God. Later in the interview, I referenced the idea of "committing to the bit," which I credited to Hank and John Green, the duo behind the vlogbrothers YouTube channel. I think Rob also mentioned it on his podcast, although I don't have the link available. If you're interested in learning more about the community of people at Sunnyside, you can find out more on our website, our YouTube library of worship services, or by contacting the church office.
John talks about how we have two principal feasts and should not be displaced by any other celebration: Epiphany and the Baptism of the LordOriginally they were on the same day, and still are for many Eastern Orthodox Churches. Both stories are unsettling, intense, almost violent. They rupture the lives of those involvedHe finishes by askingWho is the God revealed in JesusHow do we live that revelationWe then watched "Rich" by Rob Bell, part of the Nooma series. The notes for this sermon can be found here
When Target embraces emerging categories, we take notice. The hosts discussed the retailer's new curated endcaps of non-alcoholic cocktails and wine and what it means for the nascent set of zero-proof beverages. They also spoke about why Nosh is broadening its coverage (and tapped a new leader to helm the vertical) and how a fast-growing hydration brand and popular sparkling water company have each taken a bigger-is-better approach to their packaging, This episode also features an interview with Will Fabry, the master distiller for CraftCo, a Michigan-based portfolio company that owns several acclaimed spirit brands, including Jos. A. Magnus and Fox & Oden. Fabry spoke about CraftCo's distilling philosophy, how it operates at the intersection of production, consumer demand and pricing, and how he attempts to improve upon and become more proficient in his role. Show notes: 0:40: More Green Juice & THC. LinkedIn Loves Monica. A ‘Perfect' Upgrade. Kids + Tuna… Hmmm. – The hosts shared their thoughts on healthy habits for 2024 and chatted about Nosh's expanded lens and the warm reception online for its new managing editor, Monica Watrous. They also spoke about Lemon Perfect's move to a larger bottle and Spindrift's similar shift, why they're not convinced that a tuna company's attempt to woo kids will work and a sports drink brand's new line of better-you-sodas. 28:24: Interview: Will Fabry, Master Distiller, CraftCo – A 20-plus year veteran of the culinary industry, Fabry joined CraftCo in 2018. In our conversation, he spoke about the impact of Michigan's climate in how the company's spirits are finished, how he and his team are consistently meeting the high expectations that consumers have come to expect from CraftCo brands, and how he managed Covid-driven supply chain challenges. Brands in this episode: Trader Joe's, Evolution Fresh, Pressed Juicery, Biena, The Good Crisp, Lesser Evil, Lemon Perfect, Spindrift, De Soi, Ghia, Kin Euphorics, Surely, Nooma, Coppercraft, Jos. A. Our conversation this week is with Jarred & Brandon Smith — co-founders of NOOMA.The NOOMA journey began for Jarred & Brandon as hockey-playing brothers who couldn't stand the sugar-packed, artificial sports drinks we've all been given our whole lives, all the way up to their time as professional athletes. The whole thing made no sense to them; they were competing at the highest level, yet given products based on big corporate partnerships, not what's actually good for you. So they forged their own path using only organic, plant-based, and real ingredients - and no added sugar - to make products that taste great and actually work. The other part of their mission is to go beyond making drinks and build a company that makes an impact on society.NOOMA is a Cleveland staple and increasingly a national one! The Naked Now by Richard RohrFor Christians seeking a way of thinking outside of strict dualities, this guide explores methods for letting go of division and living in the present. Drawn from the Gospels, Jesus, Paul, and the great Christian contemplatives, this examination reveals how many of the hidden truths of Christianity have been misunderstood or lost and how to read them with the eyes of the mystics rather than interpreting them through rational thought. Filled with sayings, stories, quotations, and appeals to the heart, specific methods for identifying dualistic thinking are presented with simple practices for stripping away ego and the fear of dwelling in the present. My conversation with Brandon Smith, NOOMA co-Founder, took place as he was driving with his brother and two work colleagues in a car from Cleveland to Baltimore for a Natural Products Expo show. Exactly what entrepreneurs are doing every single day of the year. Really appreciated Miami University’s Director of External Relations and alum Nick Petraglia for connecting the dots and making the conversation happen. Brandon articulately explains the origin of NOOMA – an organic electrolyte drink and what it is going to take to win in the beverage game. He has incredible fortitude, dedication and a clear sense of direction….but as in all new businesses, not without some bumps. He explains the bumps and how he has overcome them. His story about staying up to 3am on this product while his hockey team had a game 7 the next day is…well….just perfect.

n this episode we speak with Jarred Smith, one of the founders of sports drink brand NOOMA. As AA hockey players, Jarred and Brandon received free sports drinks on the bus rides and during their games. Jarred, however, found that the beverages gave him acid reflux, and struggled to incorporate them into his fitness regime. When he discovered in 2012 that he wasn’t the only one who had this negative experience with sugary sports drinks, Jarred and Brandon knew this was a business opportunity waiting to unfold. Listen to learn about how they brought this idea to fruition, and how they continue to strive to raise the standards not just for the industry, but for themselves as a company.
Join Doc and host Ross Allen Skorzewski on the Dr. Patrick Flynn show as they host the the NOOMA brothers talk about their story and why they created a clean sports drink! Hockey is an exceptionally tough sport. Of the big four, it is arguably the most dangerous sport to play due to it's very physical nature and the speed at which it is played. Making it to the pro-level is a great accomplishment in itself, but what if you're not the next Tyler Seguin or Vladimir Tarasenko? If you pay attention and prepare accordingly, the game of hockey is full of lessons, both inside and outside the rink; it is the perfect arena in which to hone and develop your skills for after and outside the game. Meet Brandon and Jarred Smith of Nooma, a lifestyle brand focusing on healthy living and an active lifestyle. In Episode 10 of Uncharted Performance, learn how these two gentlemen took advantage of their hockey careers and set out on a business evolution. From identifying a personal need and moonlighting as sideprenuers to moving out their Craigslist office into a brand new warehouse facility to house their expanding operations, let them take you on a "journey to the ultimate you".

As we close the 2nd letter of Peter, we reflect on some of the themes that have resounded throughout the book. In many ways we have seen Him reveal so much to us, but as we look forward to the book of Job, we are also reminded of what is ahead in our life of learning to trust Him for who He says we are. We are learning to cling to His grace in our times of need. We are loved in all of that. Here's to growing deep in Him.

What's up with the word 'love'?
The central claims of the Christian faith are the source of many debates.
Why is it that often when we get what we want, we still feel empty?
Jesus invites our false selves to die.
Is God limited to a gender?
What are we really doing with our time?
Does God answer prayer?
Why are we so concerned with what other people thing, say, or look like?
How much time and energy do we spend wishing things were how they used to be?
We all get angry about things from time to time.
Is our physical breath a picture of a deeper spiritual reality?
Do our lives really matter?
Things don't always work out the way we want them to.
Suffering a loss can be the most difficult thing to deal with in life.
What does it mean to have a relationship with God?
A lot of us have done things in our lives we are ashamed of.
Can we separate loving God and loving others?
What does God see in us?
It isn't always easy to forgive.
Why can't we always have what we want?
Why is silence so hard to deal with?
Why do we do the things we do?
Maybe we've been blessed so that we can bless others.
