It's Friday, and I'll be heading back to my native lands this weekend after the Husky Hockey squad finishes up with Duluth. This is NOT a hockey podcast, it's Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's scores around college wrestling. Here's what went down on Thursday. Second-ranked NC State dominated Army West Point 34-6. Jakob Camacho had a takedown and nearfall points late to break open a close bout to earn a 9-1 major decision over Army's Ethan Berginc at 125 pounds. Ed Scott beat Nathan Lukez 14-8 at 157 and Dylan Fishback majored Ben Pasiuk 15-7 at 184 pounds. Minnesota rolled Bucknell in Lewisburg 37-3. Minnesota true freshman Tyler Wells continued to be the second most famous wrestler from Princeton, Minnesota behind Bob Backlund, but his college legend begins as he topped Kurt Phipps at 133 pounds. The Gophers picked up five bonus victories including falls by 125-pound All-American Patrick McKee and heavyweight Bennett Tabor. Tabor pinned Bucknell's Dorian Crosby in sudden victory. Former EWL rivals met up in Pennsylvania as West Virginia bested Clarion 32-7. Bonus victories were registered by Jordan Titus at 141 pounds, Ty Watters at 149, Peyton Hall at 165, Dennis Robin at 184 and Michael Wolfgram at heavyweight. The Mountaineers came in ranked 24th this week. They improved to 4-0. In Division II, top-ranked Lander won eight of 10 to defeat UNC Pembroke 31-9. Lander opened up with second-ranked James Joplin edging 11th-ranked Logan Seliga 6-4 at 125 pounds. Lander's Kaden Kuenzi picked off No. 11 Logan Robinson 8-7 at 133 pounds. The nationally ranked trio of David Hunsberger, Anthony Yacovetti and Juan Edmond-Holmes all picked up bonus victories on the night. Down in Missouri, Third-ranked St. Cloud State picked up a pair of wins, beating Central Missouri 37-11 and host Drury 46-5. The Mules did pick up a ranked win at 133 pounds where eighth-ranked Tommy Frezza majored ninth-ranked Caleb Meekins 11-1. St. Cloud State got one back at 165 pounds where fourth-ranked Anthony Herrera pinned eight-ranked John Ridle in the first period. Central Missouri beat Drury 47-4. Minnesota State Moorhead beat NAIA Jamestown 38-10. In Division III, 15th-ranked Coe beat Central 32-13 with All-American Will Esmoil and L.J. Richardson picking up bonus victories for the Kohawks, yes, with a K. Loras pounded the Beavers of Buena Vista 43-3. Augustana (Ill.) singed the Firebirds of Carthage 22-21 in the CCIW, while Augustana's women beat Carthage 29-20. Pacific beat Linfield 34-24 on the men's side, while Linfield's women prevailed 20-18. In the NAIA, Dakota Wesleyan beat Northwestern (Iowa) 26-21, Ottawa (Kan.) beat York (Neb.) 43-7. The Ottawa women also beat York 40-10. Cornerstone topped NJCAA Henry Ford, the college, not the man, 48-3. Providence (Mont.) beat North Idaho of the NJCAA 39-3. NHL – NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Arizona Coyotes 4, Detroit Red Wings 3 – Shootout Chicago Blackhawks 4, Buffalo Sabres 3 – OT Coyotes 4, Red Wings 3 – SO – Coyotes beat Red Wings 4-3 in shootout to end 9-game skid Nick Schmaltz and Nick Bjugstad scored on Arizona's first two shootout attempts and the Coyotes beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Tuesday night to end a nine-game losing streak. Bjugstad, Travis Boyd and Dylan Guenther scored in regulation for the Coyotes. Lawson Crouse had three assists, and Connor Ingram made 37 saves. Ingram has started two straight games for the first time this season. He stopped 25 shots in a 2-1 loss Saturday in Minnesota. Dylan Larkin scored his team-leading 15th goal for Detroit. Pius Suter and David Perron also scored for the Red Wings in the second game of a back-to-back. They have lost six of eight. Blackhawks 4, Sabres 3 – OT – Seth Jones rallies Blackhawks past Sabres 4-3 in overtime Seth Jones scored two goals, including the game-winner 2:24 into overtime, and the Chicago Blackhawks rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Philipp Kurashev had a goal and two assists for Chicago, which was coming off an ugly 8-5 loss to Seattle. Connor Murphy also scored, and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves. Buffalo lost for the fifth time in six games. Tage Thompson, Victor Olofsson and Peyton Krebs scored for the Sabres, and Craig Anderson stopped 22 shots. NCAAMBKB – Men's College Basketball Last Night Florida State 84, Notre Dame 71 Ball State 71, Western Michigan 70 Akron 69, Central Michigan 51 Kent State 77, Eastern Michigan 63 Florida State 84, Notre Dame 71 – Cleveland’s 8th double-double in row sends Seminoles to win Matthew Cleveland had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double and Florida State led all the way in an 84-71 victory over Notre Dame. Darin Green Jr. led Florida State with 20 points, 15 in the first half. Jalen Warley added 17 points, Caleb Mills 11 and Cameron Corhen 10. Marcus Hammond had five 3-pointers and a season-high 19 points to lead Notre Dame, which has lost six of its last seven. Trey Wertz added 15 points, JJ Starling 12 and Dane Goodwin 11. Notre Dame got within six late but the Seminoles made 13 of 16 free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes. Ball State 71, WMU 70 – Coleman’s 22 help Ball State down Western Michigan 71-70 Mickey Pearson's three-point play with 35 seconds left proved to be the game winner and Ball State beat Western Michigan 71-70. Lamar Norman Jr. missed a layup for the Broncos with 17 seconds left. Western Michigan secured the offensive rebound, called timeout but JaVaughn Hannah missed a shot at the buzzer to end it. Jarron Coleman scored 22 points, collected eight rebounds, distributed seven assists, and had four steals for the Cardinals. Norman led the Broncos with 31 points Akron 69, CMU 51 – Castaneda’s 13 lead Akron past Central Michigan 69-51 Xavier Castaneda scored 13 points as Akron beat Central Michigan 69-51 on Tuesday night. Jesse Zarzuela led the way for the Chippewas (7-11, 2-3) with 20 points. Central Michigan also got eight points and three blocks from Carrington McCaskill. Miroslave Stafl also put up eight points. Kent State 77, EMU 63 – Carry has 14 as Kent State beats Eastern Michigan 77-63 Sincere Carry scored 14 points as Kent State beat Eastern Michigan 77-63 on Tuesday night. Carry had five assists for the Golden Flashes (15-3, 5-0 Mid-American Conference). Emoni Bates led the way for the Eagles (4-14, 1-4) with 24 points and six rebounds. NCAAMBKB – COVID-19 outbreak at Northwestern postpones game at Iowa The men's basketball game between Iowa and Northwestern scheduled for Wednesday in Iowa City will not be played due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Northwestern program. They were the first January tornadoes Iowa has seen in more than 50 years,The first of two tornadoes touched down two miles northeast of Williamsburg at 2:01 p.m. and lasted until 2:09 p.m. It traveled northeast for 4.7 miles, with a peak wind speed of 90 mph.It was rated a 1, or EF1, on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The tornado caused minor damage to a cattle shelter and tree damage at a farmstead west of Highway 151. It also blew a semi-trailer over on Interstate 80, according to NWS Meteorologist Tim Gross.The second tornado, observed by a storm chaser, touched down only briefly. It was spotted north of Ely, and didn't cause any observable damage, Gross said. In 1973, a group of 5 teenagers was attacked and four of them killed in Iowa in a case dubbed The Gitchie Manitou Murders. Gitchie Manitou State Preserve in Northwestern Iowa was a place where kids would go to hang out and have fun. But, in 1973, Stewart Baade, Dana Baade, Roger Essem, Michael Hadrath, and Sandra Cheskey faced three brothers who were bent on destruction. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the Gitchie Manitou Murders. Brothers Allen, David, and James Freyer encountered the group on a November night. This encounter ended with the brothers shooting and killing Stewart, Dana, Roger, and Michael and abducting Sandra. Once they were captured, the brothers began pointing the finger at each other, each one trying to minimize their own involvement. On a team with high school superstars Logan and Hunter Stieber and Chris Phillips, the "Monroeville Four" were destined for college greatness. Drew Tewell wrote the screenplay of a movie about Cam's life as he rebounded to win an NAIA national championship his senior year. That’s true with wrestling and I’m going to continue to belabor the point that if you’re a wrestling fan, let’s branch out and be a wrestling fan. There’s a lot of teams that don’t get any love, but they’re out there competing. Some might even be within a reasonable drive when we get back to normal or some might have a kid who’s from your hometown. I’ve had kids from my hometown compete in D1, D2, D3 the NAIA, NJCAA through the NCWA. Following those kids helped me keep up with the York College’s of the world, the Labette’s. That being said, onto Tuesday’s college wrestling scores, because YES, there IS college wrestling going on. Of course, if you’ve listened to this show enough, you know that top-ranked Grand View is approaching history. Scratch that, they’ve tied history as Tuesday night, the Vikings blanked Benedictine (Kan.) 55-0 for its 92nd straight dual win, tying the all-time college record with SUNY-Delhi from 1979-1982. Grand View sets out to break the record on December 10 at Baker. Grand View picked up seven falls in the win, the fastest coming in 20 seconds from 125-pounder Matthew Jordan. Briar Cliff 44, Dakota Wesleyan 6 Chris Paulsen and Caleb “Tornado” Shanks each picked up falls for Joe Privetere’s Chargers. Yes, THAT Joe Privetere. Hastings 39, Midland 15 This one was nutty with all 10 bouts scoring bonus points, including six falls. Unfortunately for Midland, Hastings picked up four of those falls and a forfeit. Northwestern (Iowa) 30, William Penn 27 This one came down to heavyweight as Northwestern College, the one in Iowa, got a fall from Chris Van Der Brink in the first period to give the Red Raiders, from Orange City, the Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over the Statesmen. The NAIA released its first Women’s Coaches Poll of the season on Monday and Wayland Baptist comes in No. 1, ahead of Campbellsville, Grand View, Menlo and Life. Wayland just recently lost its head coach as Aaron Meister left to go back to his native Kansas to start the men’s and women’s program at Friends University in Wichita. Speaking of Life, coach Ashley Sword’s team was in action over the weekend and topped Indiana Tech and the University of the Cumberlands. Indiana Tech was wrestling its first ever women’s dual matches in school history. Life won 39-5 while the University of the Cumberlands edged Indiana tech 25-23. Life beat Brewton-Parker 42-4 on Monday night as well. On the men’s side of things, third-ranked Reinhardt opened up 2-0 after a trip to Florida, beating Keiser 55-0 and fifth-ranked Southeastern 24-19. Southeastern beat Keiser 49-6. Coleman Bryant of Southeastern knocked off Cole Tenety 3-1 in sudden victory at 174 pounds in a matchup of returning All-Americans. Former Indiana Hooser Blake Rypel has resurfaced on the college mats, he’s at Southeastern. He won his debut by fall at 184 for the Fire. Reinhardt did pick up powerful bonus victories from returning All-Americans Trent Leon, Nolan Saxton and Antonio Stewart to power coach Jeff Bedard’s Eagles. In other action on Monday, Brewton-Parker College beat Central Baptist (Ark.) 53-3, while St. Andrews beat the Central Baptist 42-15. No official score from St. Andrews and Brewton-Parker, but I’m told it was 43-9 in favor of Brewton-Parker. Not the first time I’ve had to chase down the opposing team looking for a score from a wrestling event held at BPC, but I digress. There isn’t a whole lot I’m going to go in-depth with tonight, but it’s now 2020 and oddly, this will be statistically the third decade I podcast. Yes, I realize that starting in 2009 and then going through all of the 10s into the 20s is basically 12 years, but whatever. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the wrestling scores and more from around the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. In case you’re wondering, this will continue to be MOSTLY a weeknight show, since I also need to have some semblance of a life on weekends (but I still do the newsletter) and I figure most wrestling fans have an opportunity to consume what’s on the web on the weekend. Or, I’ll just do it on weekdays when relevant, because it’s my show. And probably nothing on Friday night, since I’m heading down to The Clash. Minnesota Beer of the Night: I’ve been kind of holding out on this one - it’s Castle Danger’s Castle Cream Ale. This was a small brewery in Castle Danger, Minnesota, which is a real place, but now it’s grown to the point it has its own spot in Two Harbors, just north of Duluth. This is a beer that if it’s on draft where you’re at, you buy it. It’s really everything I want in a beer. Not heavy, not hoppy, just smooth, crushable and awesome. I’ll be honest, it’s almost always in my fridge. New Patron: Mike Conley, a guy I’ve known a long time from his days wrestling at York High School in Virginia. York has a cool history and Yorktown itself is one of those places where history buffs can spend days on end and still not discover all the world-changing events that happened there. Thanks Mike for your support, but that’s the only love I’ll give to those Falcons - well, there’s that one time where I picked Jason Dye to win the state title. Jason Fulmore also jumped on, he’s the guy behind SoutheastWrestling.com. He’s trying to start something rolling there in the south when it comes to wrestling, I’d encourage you to give it a look. The Scuffle: Oklahoma State edged NC State 116-109 to win the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which kicked off the new year just right. Stanford was third. Oklahoma State just had one champ - Nick Piccininni at 125 pounds, while NC State crowned Hayden Hidlay the champ at 157 pounds. Stanford had three champs, most of any team, with titles coming from Real Woods at 141, unattached Jaden Abas at 149 and Shane Griffith at 165 pounds. Other titlists were Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers at 133, Penn State’s unattached true freshman Carter Starocci at 174, Lou DePrez of Binghamton at 184, West Virginia’s Noah Adams at 197 and Iowa State’s Gannon Gremmel at 285. DePrez avenged an early-season loss to NC State’s Trent Hidlay 3-2. OW went to Adams, who pinned Stanford’s Nathan Traxler in the finals. Yes, thank you Cliff Fretwell. Full results on FloArena. In Duals Light night in duals, but Fresno State hosted Cal Poly and Utah Valley to kick off the new year at the SaveMart Center. In the opening dual, Fresno State won six of ten bouts with a fall coming from Brandon Martino at 174 to beat the visiting Mustangs 24-16. While Cal Poly had a chance going into the final match, Jacob Wright’s 7-6 decision at 157 pounds closed out the win for the Bulldogs. Fresno State rallied from a 19-12 deficit to win the last two matches to beat Utah Valley 24-19. Big match there came at 285 as Tate Orndorff knocked off Josh Hokit 3-1. Greg Gaxiola was leading 6-1 in the second period when he earned an injury default win over Brigg Hoopes. That set the stage for the final bout where Wright got up big on Jerry Rubio and finished the dual off with a fall with 40 seconds to go. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) upended No. 23 Western Colorado 24-12 in Sioux Falls. The Vikings won five of the last six matches to close things out. Notables on the Docket: Long Island University heads through Pennsylvania to take on Bloomsburg, while No. 5 Virginia Tech heads to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to take on No. 24 Central Michigan. In the NAIA, Menlo will host the Menlo duals with Arizona Christian, Northwestern (Iowa), and Simpson (Calif.). The heavy stuff won’t be coming down for an hour or so, or Saturday, if you’re wondering. Kris Rumph, the guy who beat Iowa’s Gavin Teasdale over the weekend, yeah, he won by fall at 133. The win ran Wartburg’s win streak in the American Rivers Conference is now 215. St. Cloud State, which should be ranked No. 1 when the next Division II rankings come out, extended its win streak to 52 in a row and its conference dual win streak to 69 in a row after shutting out Southwest Minnesota State 42-0 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. Top-ranked James Barzowski topped Nathan Moore 10-3 at 157 pounds. Shippensburg knocked off Division III Waynesburg 35-12. The Red Raiders notched three falls, with the fastest coming from DeAndre Reed at 149 in 1:02. Northern State beat its Division III opponent, Concordia-Moorhead, 24-15 just across the Red River in Moorhead, Minnesota. Billy Holtan, son of longtime Mat Talk Podcast Network patron Bill Holton, picked up a major decision at 165 pounds in the Wolves’ winning effort. Going back to PA, Kutztown defeated Millersville 24-13. In Division I, Missouri hosts Division II Central Missouri and NAIA Missouri Valley, while a pair of teams from out west head east. Oregon State heads to George Mason, while Air Force will face Hofstra. In Division II, a pair of newer programs will hook up as Urbana will face Bellarmine. In D3, we’ve got Manchester heading to Adrian, an all-Iowa tilt as Central faces Coe, while up in Wisconsin, UW-Stevens Point will face UW-Oshkosh. A pretty solid slate of duals in the NAIA, with Corban facing Simpson and Southern Oregon in a tri-meet, while Life Pacific will host Arizona Christian. Vanguard will also be in the house facing Arizona Christian. That’s a tri with three teams in the west all started in the past two years. Warner Pacific is at Montana State-Northern, Central Methodist heads to Iowa for a men’s and women’s double dip with Grand View. Grand View trying to extend its win streak to 79. The Vikings currently hold the second longest win streak in college wrestling history. If the math is right, the Vi kings won’t break the record of 92 this season. Doane is at Midland, Benedictine is at St. Mary and who knows what the heck is going on at Lindenwood-Belleville. Last I’d heard was the school was going to consolidate its sports with Lindewood’s main campus in Missouri. The women’s roster and coaching staff hasn’t been updated, yet the women are supposed to face MacMurray, while the men are allegedly facing off with Calumet College of St. Joseph. Keeping with the women’s schedule, Limestone heads to King, Adrian is at Tiffin, Simpson is also up at Southern Oregon with the men and Midland heads west to face Colorado Mesa. FROM THE DWN: Wyatt Henson, the son of Sammie Henson and a 2021 Iowa commit, was reportedly ruled ineligible for the postseason by the WPIAL, which is essentially the athletic association for Western PA. Henson started out at Waynesburg Central while his dad was the head coach a short distance away in Morgantown, West Virginia at WVU. IAwrestle posted about it, while PA Power is following up. Dual Meets: As noted in the Monday episode, there was a dose of Division III wrestling in Ohio where No. 4 Mount Union beat Muskingum 54-0, highlighted by seven falls from the Purple Raiders, including a 10-second fall from returning All-American and top-ranked Antwon Pugh. No. 1 Jordin James, last year’s national champion at 133, picked up one of the other six falls. John Carroll beat Heidelberg 25-15, No. 9 Baldwin Wallace beat Ohio Northern 28-6 and No. 15 Otterbein beat Wilmington 53-0. Of note with Wilmington, this is the second year the team has been active since reinstatement, but with no home duals last year with an abbreviated schedule, Tuesday was the first home dual in seven years for the Fighting Quakers - yes, I say again, Fighting Quakers. All-American heavyweight and top-ranked Drew Kasper had a fall in 94 seconds there for Otterbein. In the NAIA, Baker beat Graceland 32-12. Returning national champion Lucas Lovvorn picked up a major decision at 174 pounds over Brennan Swafford of Graceland. Lovvorn was No. 1 in the preseason at 174, while Swafford was No. 2 at 165 in the NAIA preseason rankings. I mean, it was a tie-breaker that decided it, right? Rider also entered at No. 20, while three teams who beat ranked teams - Stanford, Illinois and Michigan State, were just outside the rankings this week. As far as the individual rankings go, each site puts them out Monday or Tuesday. As I said last week, those individual rankings won’t be linked in the newsletter because some sites put them behind paywalls, while others update the same page weekly, which makes for sharing links difficult because it thinks its a repeat. Whatever. That’s one shortcoming I can’t quite overcome here. I’m going to share them all, or I’m going to share none. Gotta keep it fair, right? Bo Nickal’s going to do some grappling thing. Sometimes you have to pivot. I had every intention of putting together another episode of The Guillotine Grapevine here on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, but sometimes things don’t go as planned, as you’re about to find out. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. Dual Meets: The biggest upset of the night and one of the bigger upsets in the past several years saw unranked Rider come into Williams Arena in Minneapolis and knock off No. 6 Minnesota 21-17. The key wins came from Jonathan Tropea at 125 pounds and Dean Sherry at 174 pounds. Sherry pinned All-American Devin Skatzka in one of the most exciting three minutes of wrestling. Instead of talking you through it, I talked with Rider coach John Hangey about the match and its impact on the Rider program. Rider’s Ryan Cloud won an absolutely not thrilling bout 1-0 at 285 over Bobby Steveson to lock up the win for the Broncs. (Hangey Interview) In other Top 25 action, No. 3 Ohio State won six out of 10 at No. 15 Pittsburgh, but it was bonus points that blew the match open for coach Tom Ryan’s Buckeyes. Ohio State prevailed 23-12. Kollin Moore opened the dual with a major at 197, Chase Singletary scored a mild upset over Demetrius Thomas at heavyweight, Luke Pletcher, no, that’s not a typo, got a major at 141 pounds over Cole Matthews, while Sammy Sasso picked up a fall at 149 pounds. The Buckeyes return home to face No. 11 Virginia Tech on Sunday. In Philadelphia, No. 4 Oklahoma State won eight out of 10 bouts to open its dual season with a 30-6 win over Drexel. Cowboy 165-pounder Travis Wittlake knocked off Ebed Jarrell 5-1. John Smith also tied Bobby Douglas for fifth on the all-time collegiate dual wins list with his 427th victory. No. 8 Arizona State won its home opener 35-6 over Division II Augustana (S.D.). We’ll save the story of that dual for what’s in the Daily Wrestling Newsletter. No. 9 NC State always seems to get a fight from ODU and Friday was no different. The Wolfpack would prevail 22-11 after getting a huge fall at 197 pounds from Tyrie Houghton to go along with ranked wins by top-ranked Hayden Hidlay at 157 over Larry Early and Tariq Wilson’s 3-2 win over Sa’Derian Perry at 141. Elsewhere in Division I, Northern Illinois beat Bucknell 24-10, Binghamton beat South Dakota State 25-16, Oregon State beat Division II Simon Fraser 40-8 in Tahoma, Washington. I deliberately didn’t post this until Fresno State and Rutgers were finished. Rutgers won 23-13. Did Fresno State set their school’s attendance record? No, but they still drew a solid 3,500-plus. Division II Coker beat NAIA St. Andrews 45-8. In Division III No. 1 Wabash shut out Manchester 45-0, No. 15 Ithaca topped Stevens Institute 29-12, Williams beat Trinity 28-18, Lycoming beat Thiel 40-6 and smashed NJCAA Jamestown (N.Y.) 51-3. Thiel beat Jamestown 44-6. In the NAIA, Concordia (Neb.) beat Northwestern (Iowa) 29-10 and Southern Oregon beat Warner Pacific 36-16. Campbellsville swept a quad at Embry-Riddle. The Tigers beat Arizona Christian 32-6, host Embry-Riddle 33-9 and Vanguard 43-3. So two wins over first-year teams. Play nice Franky James! In junior college action, Minnesota West beat Northland Tech 36-21. Late Thursday: Fresno City beat Bakersfield 42-6, while Modesto beat Skyline and West Hills. Central Baptist beat Oklahoma Wesleyan 24-22. Tournaments In Bristol, Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales is out to an early Day 1 lead at the Roger Williams Invitational. Following the Wildcats are Castleton, TCNJ, NYU and host Roger Williams. International Wrestling Day 1 of the Bill Farrell came and went as the most important aspect was athletes qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April in State College. In Greco, five Americans won titles - Ryan Mango at 60kg, Alex Sancho at 67kg, Alan Vera at 87kg, G’Angelo Hancock at 97kg and Adam Coon at 130kg. Also qualifying was Sammy Jones at 60kg and Spencer Woods at 77kg. In women’s freestyle competition at the Bill Farrell, Victoria Anthony beat Erin Golston to win gold at 50kg. Golston qualified for the Trials by being the highest placing American who wasn’t already qualified. Areana Villaescusa and Alex Glaude also qualified. Of note at 76kg, Erica Wiebe of Canada, the 2016 Olympic champion, beat 2014 world silver medalist Aline da Silva of Brazil 4-0 for gold. Women’s World Cup in Narita, Japan kicked off.
