WUCF's August artist for ‘In the Key of Latin Jazz' is Oscar Hernández. As leader of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra the past 22 years – his contributions to Latin Jazz stretch far and wide. On top of this incredible feat, he is a four-time Grammy winner, worked with people like Celia Cruz, Willie Colón and Paul Simon and is responsible for the piano in the ‘Sex and the City' theme song! His latest record “No Words Needed” is also what can be said about his career. Truly a living legend in our midst.
Ray Viera was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. During his childhood he grew up listening to the recordings of the great "Soneros", such as Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Ismael Miranda, Chamaco Ramirez and Marvin Santiago. Collectively, these artists inspired Ray to pursue his goals, combining their musical influences into his own vocal style and sensibility. At the age of 11, Ray was sent to live with his father in the "Barrio" of Philadelphia. Where he was exposed to many other musical genres. Although he lived outside of his native Puerto Rico, he never lost his cultural roots and musical influences. Ray has worked with many Latin music legends, including Johnny Pacheco, the late Celia Cruz, Yomo Toro, Adalberto Santiago, Papo Lucca, Justo Betancourt, Eddie Palmieri, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Jimmy Bosch, Chino Nunez, The Fania All Stars, and many other greats. He recorded his first album for ATI Records in 1997 produced by Johnny Pacheco with Jovanny Diaz and his Orchestra.Ray has logged over 20 professional recordings where his discography includes background vocals in various genres, including the soundtrack of an Off-Broadway musical entitled "Quien Mato a Hector Lavoe" starring Domingo Quinones, that would later become a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony titled “El Cantante”. He sang background vocals for the late Celia Cruz's Grammy winning "La Negra Tiene Tumbao", her final CD; both Eddie Palmieri's 40th anniversary CD, "La Perfecta II" (Grammy nominated) and "Ritmo Caliente", and is the lead singer in Johnny Pacheco's 50th anniversary CD "Entre Amigos"(2004). He also participated in Ricky Gonzalez's "Oasis", singing lead in the songs "Timbalero" and "Ya Era Tiempo". Over the years, he has toured throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America , Africa, and Europe. While striving to realize his dreams, he has continually performed with intense passion and emotion. Many consider Ray one of the new generation of artists who can blend the traditional style of singing with the flexibility of a crooner and a progressive, modern outlook. After many years of being in a background role to some of Salsa's greatest legends, Ray released his debut album, Aqui Esta Ray Viera in 2002. He shows his talent as composer in songs like "Lo Mio Es Cantar", "Borinquen y Cubanacan", and "Corazon Cerrado". He also composed "Tun Tun Suena El Tambor" in Spanish Harlem Orchestra's Grammy award winning album "Across 110th Street". Ray has been a lead singer for the legendary Johnny Pacheco's Tumbao Añejo since 1998. In 2007 Ray released “TROMBAO which he produced and composed nine of the ten songs. “TROMBAO” made it to the second round of the Grammy nomination process in 2008. Ray Viera y Trombao presented its latest work to the public that provided a cultural blending of rhythm that is bursting with Caribbean flavors titled "SAMBUMBIA RADIOACTIVA" in 2013. Today, Ray Viera is taking his talents to the production side and continuing to compose for various projects.Support the show

As broadcast March 21, 2023 with lots of regret. Tonight we mark 20 years since the US invaded Iraq in what was dubbed "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Obviously, it wasn't that, it was just another dumb war.

Music has been the center of Jeremy Bosch's life since he has memory. Growing up in his native Puerto Rico, he played percussion and sang at his local church , while his family instructed him in a variety of classic legends such as Barry White, Earth Wind & Fire, Miles Davis, Hector Lavoe, Chicago and Tony Bennett, for Name some. He soon manifested his musical talent: at the young age of 17, Jeremy received a full scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music. It was during these years of training that Bosch had his first professional experience as an artist, along with the famous Puerto Rican percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo and his All Star Band. It was there Bosch knew he was destined for a career in music. It has been a long and transformative road since Bosch's summers in Berklee. He has performed worldwide in concerts and festivals in Europe, South America, North America and the Caribbean. He has been the lead vocalist of the acclaimed Spanish Harlem Orchestra and also shared the stage with the legendary salsa player Eddie Palmieri as vocalist for his band. More recently, Bosch had the honor of acting as leader of the band in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.Article credit: RockWood MusicSupport the show (https://cash.app/$AdrianLMontanez)

EPISODE 034 of Chicago Music Revealed with Mike Jeffers and special guest Spanish Harlem Orchestra Artistic Director Oscar Hernández discussing the upcoming release "The Latin Jazz Project" due out May 22nd. Visit http://www.spanishharlemorchestra.com/ About the Spanish Harlem Orchestra Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the three-time Grammy® winning Salsa and Latin Jazz band, sets the gold standard for excellence in authentic, New York style, hard core salsa. Whether in a concert hall or at an outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing you in, they come at you full force, from start to finish. Their energy on stage and their rich sound and musical precision leave audiences mesmerized until the last note is played. With an unwavering respect for the music’s storied history, the ensemble’s thirteen world-class musicians and vocalists come together to create an unparalleled musical experience. Now celebrating their 15th year, SHO, as they are known to fans, is dedicated to the sounds of the barrio (Spanish Harlem NYC). Their music is characterized by the raw, organic and vintage sound defined by the genre. They are on a mission to keep the musical legacy of salsa dura (hard salsa) alive and expand its audience to those who love great music, not just Latin music. Grounded in the past, while focused on the future, they strive to keep the music relevant, creating a unique and fresh approach. With six CD’s and five Grammy nominations, this powerhouse orchestra is aware that it is crucial to continually push themselves and raise the bar. Their latest release and 6th album entitled “Anniversary” won the 2019 Grammy® Award for “Best Tropical Album”.
The hosts discuss family lineage, life during the COVID-19 pandemic and special guest Oscar Hernandez of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra joins the show by phone.
All hands on deck - it's a big band episode! The boys look at two "historical" releases - one an oddity from the 1950's, the other a pace-setter from the nineties, and then dig into three brand new releases by large units. Lots of musings from Pat about the pro's and con's of large ensemble jazz, but hey, that's what the fast-forward button is for. Stay tuned for a heart-felt endorsement of Scott Walker's misanthropic "Scott 2." Sauter-Finnegan Orchestra – NEW DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC; Mingus Big Band – LIVE IN TIME (disc 1); Spanish Harlem Orchestra – ANNIVERSARY; Ralph Peterson – I REMEMBER BU; Charles Pillow – ELECTRIC MILES.
Damon and Marcos talk with Pablo "Chino" Nuñez about his upbringing, studying with and performing alongside the greats of Afro-Latin music as well as some of the struggles he worked through before joining the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. In addition to the interview, there are some cool product reviews, listener letters, an educational spotlight and music news!
Host Deardra Shuler talks with Oscar Hernandez, pianist and bandleader of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The two-time Grammy Award-winning salsa band, sets the standard for authentic New York style salsa dura. Live or recorded, it doesn’t get any better, and whether at a concert hall or outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing the audience in as the Spanish Harlem Orchestra performs at full force from start to finish. Although the Bronx native was once best known as Rubén Blades’ pianist and musical director, Hernández has also worked with such seminal artists as Ismael Miranda, Ray Barreto, Celia Cruz, and Paul Simon. Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s blend of classic salsa tunes with new material debuted with 2002’s Un Gran Dia En Barrio, which earned the 2003 Latin Billboard Award for Salsa Album of the Year-Best New Group and a Grammy nominee for Best Salsa Album. Their second release, Across 110th Street won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. Next came the Grammy nominated album United We Swing (2007) that featured Paul Simon, and Viva La Tradición with guest artist Issac Delgado that was honored with the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album. Their latest release is the self-titled album Spanish Harlem Orchestra with special guests Chick Corea and Joe Lovano. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra will be appearing at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 250 Bedford Park Blvd West, Bronx, NY on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at 8pm.
Pianist Oscar Hernandez, leader of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, can get down with a salsa beat or play a lilting Latin Jazz tune. In this JazzCorner.com Jazz Perspective, Hernandez says Latin music should get the same respect as straight ahead jazz. It's not always party time. This Perspective was produced by Reese Erlich.
