The Practical Faith Academy Podcast from Cecil Taylor Ministries presents guests who have important things to say about putting your faith into practice. Cecil interviews each guest to understand their life stories and their ideas for living a seven-day practical faith. It's not often that the podcast serves as a testimonial time, but the story of Mark Trieglaff justifies the format. Trieglaff walks through a life shaken by his parents' divorce, his descent into addiction, his abandoned suicide attempt, his acceptance of Jesus, living a Christ-directed life, and his encounter with three terrible tragedies in a row, using his faith to get him through them. Along the way, you'll learn the core elements of a seven-day practical faith and how they provided a foundation of hope that would not be shaken in the worst of times. Highlights of the podcast:   1:04    When Mark discovered his family wasn't what he thought it was 2:55     How he sought stress relief during his parents' divorce 4:47     How Mark reached a point of hopelessness that led to a suicidal event 8:02     A co-worker at a zoo led Mark to Christ 11:16   Even after salvation, Mark was lost on how to proceed as a Christian but finally developed his faith 15:10   Mark experienced a quick succession of three family tragedies but leaned on hope instead of hopelessness 20:16   Mark spoke of hope at his daughter's funeral 22:46   The third tragedy: losing his wife 25:36   How Mark's wife Joy became an organ donor 27:35   Scripture that has sustained Mark in tragic times: John 16:33, Romans 8:28, Revelation 21:4-5 30:23   Mark's reaction to being approached about turning his story into a book and a movie 32:56   Mark's profession in disability enablement and how he puts his faith into practice During the podcast, Trieglaff references several organizations with which he's involved or recommends: https://joniandfriends.org/ - Christian disability ministry https://www.agapeukraine.com/en/about-us/ - Agape Ukraine is the location for a future building to address the needs of disabled Ukranian soldiers. https://giftofhope.org/ - Organ donation website https://www.eversightvision.org/ - Eye bank featuring cornea donation Cecil Taylor is an author, speaker, podcaster, blogger, and provider of Instant Content to churches and small groups. So we've talked about mindfulness on this show before, and if you're in my Differently Wired Club, you know that mindfulness meditation is something I explore from time to time but really struggle with implementing in the way I think I'm supposed to. Like, I always feel like I'm doing it wrong or it's just not for me. But as my guest today, Hunter Clarke-Fields, explains, there are many accessible ways to practice mindfulness, even for people like me who feel like they can't, or don't want to, slow down. And there's just no disputing the powerful way that mindfulness can support us in helping us be more present, more grounded, more calm, more open, and more curious when navigating all the big, challenging stuff with our neurodivergent kids. During our conversation, Hunter demonstrates a few mindful techniques to regulate yourself when you need it that are very doable even if you only have 3 minutes — I've actually been doing them since we recorded this, and I'm still at it! Hunter also shared strategies to show our kids compassion when they are struggling and introduces us to what has become one of my most favorite positive self-talk phrases — “permission to be human” — as a reminder when we have less than brilliant parenting, or life, moments. She ended the conversation with a beautiful reflection on why it's important to see our kids for who they are and be willing to be open to the changes that happen every day for them.   About Hunter Clarke-Fields Hunter Clarke-Fields MSAE, E-RYT (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a Mindfulness Mentor, Mindful Mama podcast host, mom, global speaker, and number 1 bestselling author of Raising Good Humans, as well as her most recent book, Raising Good Humans Every Day (Aug 1, 2023). She is a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, the creator of the Mindful Parenting Course and Teacher Training, and has taught mindfulness to thousands worldwide, including a recent trip to Egypt. Hunter presents talks on parenting, and is a certified teacher of Parent Effectiveness Training. In addition, Hunter coaches smart, accomplished, over-stressed individuals on how to cultivate mindfulness. Hunter is the mother of two active daughters, who challenge her every day to hone her craft! Her work has appeared in CNBC Make It, Parade, Motherhood Moment, The Hollywood Digest, along with on ABC Portland, NBC Milwaukee, CBS South Bend, Kansas Public Radio, and many podcasts.   Things you'll learn from this episode: What we can learn about our values in moments of shame or discomfort when we don't show up as the parent we want to be How Hunter uses the philosophy of “permission to be human” to show herself compassion and accept mistakes will happen What mindfulness is and what being a mindful parent means Ways to practice mindfulness that are not traditional meditations Strategies for showing our kids compassion when everyone (them, us) is struggling Why it's essential that we see our children as they are in the present moment (and not how they were yesterday)   Resources mentioned: Hunter Clarke-Fields' website Mindful Mama Mentor Raising Good Humans Every Day: 50 Simple Ways to Press Pause, Stay Present, and Connect with Your Kids by Hunter Clarke-Fields Raising Good Humans: A Mindful Guide to Breaking the Cycle of Reactive Parenting and Raising Kind, Confident Kids by Hunter Clarke-Fields Raising Good Humans book website Mindful Parenting Podcast Mindful Mama Mentor on Instagram Mindful Mama Mentor on Facebook Hunter Clarke-Fields on LinkedIn Plum Village Tradition   Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever heard of reactive parenting? Reacting parenting is the negative behavior that parents show when they are frustrated with their child. It can show up as yelling, threatening, bribing, or even hitting.  I think this is something that most of us have experienced in one form or another. Some of us may not even know we are doing it. So how can we avoid having these types of reactions when we parent? Each child is different and there are different tools we can use to help promote more calm and less chaos in everyday life at home. In todays' episode, Laura Linn Knight is on the podcast to help us overcome reactive parenting. Laura Linn Knight is a parenting educator, author, mindfulness and meditation leader, and former elementary school teacher. We discuss what exactly is reactive parenting, why it can be harmful, and what tools can we use to avoid reactive parenting. In this episode we discuss: The definition of reactive parenting. Examples of reactive parenting and how to work through it. Self regulating strategies to use when you are feeling upset or burnt out. Different tools with children of different ages for reactive parenting. How you and your partner can benefit from reactive parenting in your own relationship. Did you know that we are reactive by nature? That's right! Our brains are wired to respond in kind for protection. But responding in kind — like yelling at your child after they yelled at you — is rarely needed in today's modern world. And it's never helpful, which is why we need to reduce our reactivity with our kids and parent from a place of calm intention.  My guest on this episode of the Beautifully Complex podcast is parenting and mental health educator, Laura Linn Knight. Laura shares her insights and strategies on reacting less, addressing behavior and struggle with intention a lot more, and giving ourselves grace and amending our own behavior when we make mistakes. The calmer you are, the more power you actually have.

Reactive parenting. Maybe most of us couldn't give it a dictionary-worthy definition, but we all know what it looks like.  What comes to mind is the image of a parent lashing out, yelling at, at waving her fists at her kid following some unwanted behavior the child does, but reactive parenting can be much more subtle than this.  For all of us parents, we likely have some reactive tendencies simply because we're quick to respond, especially when we've got a lot on our mind and are doing a million things at once. So whether your reactive parenting is subtle or not so subtle, I want to talk about the signs of reactive parenting, the signs of proactive parenting, and some reasons for why proactive parenting is going to be the best approach for you and your child.   Remember, I help you make parenting easier. Let's head to the show.  IN THIS EPISODE: Laura Lynn reviews the signs of reactive parenting and the reasons for why you want to get out of it;  She explains the signs of proactive parenting and why this is likely the parenting approach you want to adopt; and   She shares why it's common to have moments of reactive parenting, so no need to feel guilty because of it.  SHOW NOTES If you're at your wits end in your parenting and managing the typical toddler behaviors and you just don't know what to do about it or what to try, sign up for a 30-minute coaching call to get some insight into the problem you're experiencing and some guidance on what to do next. www.lauralynnlapointe.com/workwithme.  Let's connect!  On Facebook: www.fb.me/lauralynnlapointe  On Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/lauralynnlapointe

As the war in Ukraine unfolds in front of our eyes, we can't forget that our kids are watching too... They're hearing things at school, listening to the news on TV at home, and seeing images on their social media feeds. How can parents talk to kids about what's happening in an age-appropriate way? To help us navigate this new situation with our child we have asked Laura Linn these questions:  Would you talk about war with your pre-schooler? Or would they be too young? Should they be shielded from this?  What do you say at different age levels? How do you start the conversation?   Should you ask what they know? How do they feel about it? What if they are scared war will come to America? How can you address their fears? How can you make them feel safe and secure? If they ask questions you don't know the answers to, how do you respond?  How can you help your children make sense of war if you can't wrap your own mind around it?    By listening to this episode you will feel more confident and have better skills on how to approach this new reality with your child. Also, you will learn how to answer your child's questions in an age-appropriate way.   If you have any unanswered questions, don't hesitate to contact us!   Genevieve & Becca xo   Tittle: E161 - How to talk about the war to your child Guest: Parenting Educator Laura Linn Knight is the author of the upcoming book "Break Free from Reactive Parenting” and she's a former Elementary School Teacher, Certified Positive Discipline Educator, and a Meditation Teacher who specializes in helping parents, teachers, and kids create more calm in the home and in the classroom. Confession time - I used to be a yeller. I yelled as a coach when I was a teen working with children and then I yelled as a parent at my kids. My temper has always gotten the best of me. So how did I end up with 4 kids and never having to raise my voice at them through their tweens and teens? Well, I had to change from being a frustrated and reactive parent to being a positive and proactive one. I had to recognize that my childrens' misbehavior was ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS a way of them trying to tell me something. And, that is where we have to agree to begin. You have to agree that all your child's behavior is communication. If we can start there, we can work to end the yelling in your house too. Thank you for hanging out with me today! We will learn: How to identify the harmful patterns that may have been passed down through generations.  Why giving advice or offering solutions is not helpful and what to do instead.  How to yell less.  Everyone has childhood wounds and needs that weren't met whether our parents even realized it or not.   If you have kids, you probably feel like you've already inflicted some damage by responding at times in ways that turned out to be less than helpful.   But the fact that you love your child enough to think “can I make small changes to do this parenting thing a little better,” tells me that you're already doing an amazing job.   Yes there are tips about communicating with kids and motivating them and helping them learn, but what I'm learning is that the biggest impact you have is what you model for them.   One day they're going to be responsible for taking care of themselves and showing them how you take care of yourself is probably the most effective way to do that.   When you take care of your needs first, you calm your own storm, so you can then tend to your child.   So today we're going to figure out how to do all that we can to make sure we raise happy, healthy little humans.   Our guest is Hunter Clarke-Fields, mindful mama mentor and widely-followed author of “Raising Good Humans: A Mindful Guide to Breaking the Cycle of Reactive Parenting and Raising Kind, Confident Kids.” Links from the episode: Show Notes: https://mindlove.com/208 Sign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes from your highest self.  Get Mind Love Premium for exclusive ad-free episodes and monthly meditations.  Support Mind Love Sponsors   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. In Raising Good Humans, you'll find powerful and practical strategies to break free from “reactive parenting” habits and raise kind, cooperative, and confident kids. Whether you're running late for school, trying to get your child to eat their vegetables, or dealing with an epic meltdown in the checkout line at a grocery store—being a parent is hard work! And, as parents, many of us react in times of stress without thinking—often by yelling. But what if, instead of always reacting on autopilot, you could respond thoughtfully in those moments, keep your cool, and get from A to B on time and in one piece? With this book, you'll find powerful mindfulness skills for calming your own stress response when difficult emotions arise. You'll also discover strategies for cultivating respectful communication, effective conflict resolution, and reflective listening. In the process, you'll learn to examine your own unhelpful patterns and ingrained reactions that reflect the generational habits shaped by your parents, so you can break the cycle and respond to your children in more skillful ways. When children experience a parent reacting with kindness and patience, they learn to act with kindness as well—thereby altering generational patterns for a kinder, more compassionate future. With this essential guide, you'll see how changing your own “autopilot reactions” can create a lasting positive impact, not just for your kids, but for generations to come. As parents, we have the opportunity to wake up and heal.  The process of Beginning Anew, to help us deal with unwanted behavior from relatives.
