What you'll hear in this episode: Adam Laraway on staying aligned with your values and adopting a growth mindset while launching a successful practice. Being kind and self-compassionate may be the key to a more fulfilling life. So, how can you make it a constant in your life? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Shauna Shapiro, a clinical psychologist and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and self-compassion. We sat down to discuss the true meaning of mindfulness, what being kind does to your brain, and how to successfully introduce meditation to your daily routine. In this episode, you'll discover: Kindness Shifts Your Neurochemistry: Practicing self-compassion and kindness greatly benefits your mental fitness. According to Dr. Shapiro, being kind to yourself "literally turns on the learning centers of the brain." This signals the brain to release oxytocin, which helps to settle the nervous system, and dopamine, which "is this neuromodulator of motivation and learning." Mindfulness vs Meditation: While sometimes used interchangeably, mindfulness and meditation are not the same. "Mindfulness is a way of being," says Dr. Shapiro, adding that to be mindful is to be present in the moment and with yourself. "Meditation is the exercise."  Why Progress Matters More Than Perfection: In short, perfection is not attainable, sustainable, or something to strive for. "Perfection is the antithesis of evolution. Perfection means I'm done. That's not the goal," shares Dr. Shapiro. "And so when I make a mistake, instead of beating myself up, it's like, how can I learn? How can I grow? And you're cheering for yourself instead of kicking yourself when you're already down." How to Start Your Meditation Journey: Instead of setting a lofty goal, start with meditating five minutes a day for five days, morning or night. It may feel difficult in the beginning, but the benefits are worth it, says Dr. Shapiro: "It shifts our relationship with ourselves, our relationship with the world, how we perceive things." 04:40 Defining Mindfulness 06:55 Mindfulness vs. Meditation 10:18 Shauna's Monastery Experience 14:06 The Science Behind Kindness 23:42 Practical Tips for Mindfulness 26:11 Basic Mindfulness Practices and Resources 28:11 The Impact of Mindfulness on Daily Life 29:11 Mindfulness in Parenting 30:20 The Role of Intentions in Mindfulness 37:11 Empathy vs. Compassion 41:12 Success Stories and Transformations Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Shapiro: Website: https://drshaunashapiro.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drshaunashapiro/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrShaunaShapiro/ YouTube: https://bit.ly/4gUC8cX Good Morning. All of us have the power and choice to re-architect the structure of our brain to be healthier, happier and of greater service. Discussed in this fascinating interview episode with award winning author & TED Talk speaker, Shauna Shapiro, are the differences between meditation and mindfulness, empathy and compassion, and how to leverage all of these concepts into our day-to-day lives. To embody practices, we have to understand them and science helps us with this. You will learn in this episode: How what you practice grows Why your attention is your greatest currency  How the understanding of neuroplasticity in science has changed everything How mindfulness and meditative practices positively impact every sector of your life The difference between meditation and mindfulness (because they are different!) How these practices make you a better citizen and family member Why compassion is more advantageous than empathy  Why compassion for yourself is crucial  SHOW NOTES: The art of attention is discussed. Your attention is your greatest currency. Your attention implicates every arena of your life: the quality of your  Neuroplasticity is the capacity at any age to reconfigure our brain and its thought patterns. How to rewire your mind: Neuroplasticity & spirituality   All of us have the power and choice to re-architect the structure of our brain to be healthier, happier to be of greater service. What we practice grows stronger both for the good and for the bad.  Neuronal pruning concepts are detailed such as pruning neural pathways. Every time you go on new pathway it prunes automatically prunes the old pathway  Difference between meditation and mindfulness is broken down. They are distinct and separate things that support each other. Meditation is the practice and exercise so we can grow mindfulness. It's going to the gym, so we can grow our mindfulness which is a state, a way of being and a way of paying attention. Attention is your most valuable resource. Ask yourself, can I be present? On average a Harvard study shows, our minds wander 47% of the time! So most of us are missing pretty much half our lives. Meditation is part of practice so we can grow our mindfulness in moment-to-moment life. This model of mindfulness is detailed with clear steps to use.  Many people feel they can't meditate.  The many benefits of meditation are discussed. So many of us don't feel worthy of taking time to care for ourselves. These practices are self-love practices.People who practice mindfulness and meditation are better citizens of the world. The myth that meditation and mindfulness practices are selfish is debunked with science. They make people more generous and more compassionate. There is data to prove this. The science is very compelling.  The convergence and confluence of the feelings of compassion and empathy are broken down. To embody practices, we have to understand them and science helps us with this. The ways that empathy and compassion work in our brain are discussed and then how to leverage these feelings in impactful ways are detailed. The Tibetan definition of compassion is considered incomplete if it does not include ourselves. Furthermore, a compassionate act that is not healthy for you, is not even considered compassion. ✨HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!:  The doors for the Modern Mystic Membership are now open! Self-compassion is a superpower. Studies show self-compassion increases generosity, productivity, and exercise in those who practice it. Mindfulness and self-compassion are rarely seen as integral to our work as physicians and other healthcare providers, but they should be.  Today's special guest is Dr. Shauna Shapiro, the author of Good Morning I Love You: Mindfulness + Self-Compassion Practices to Rewire Your Brain for Calm, Clarity and Joy. Neuroplasticity means that we have the capacity to change, rewire, and cultivate self compassion, mindfulness, clarity and calm. I didn't discover these helpful, productive and performance-enhancing practices until I was 48.  Dr. Shapiro reminds us that it's never too late. To begin or begin again. The impact of practicing self-compassion ripples out to everyone whose lives we touch. As physicians, this is a tremendous underutilized tool. Good Morning, I Love You, Violet, is a new children's book about self-compassion that will be released on October 23, 2023. As a pediatrician, I am delighted. I know of very few if any children's books teach self-compassion. This book is an opportunity for our kids to begin well and to learn how a simple gesture of self-care can become as commonplace as brushing your teeth.  If you want to integrate more self-compassion and mindfulness into your life, join me for coaching and/or a retreat to learn how.  Its uncomfortable to start but there are many accessible and fun ways to finally make it happen.  Blending coaching, mindfulness, self-compassion, yoga, nature and nourishment together at a Pause and Presence retreat is the secret sauce to lasting change in this arena.  Coaching: Mindful Coaching — Pause and Presence Retreats: Mindful Coaching, Yoga & Culinary Medicine CME Retreats — Pause and Presence I can't wait to share Good Morning, I Love You Violet with all those in my life who have children. I have preordered the book for myself and each of my neices and nephews. There is no greater gift to the next generation's health, happiness, productivity, and generosity than practicing self-compassion If you would like to contribute to the Children's Compassion Project, which is raising funds to donate Good Morning, I Love You Violet to children's hospitals, libraries and elementary schools in the US, Dr. Shapiro and I would be most grateful. If you want an inspiring, nurturing and eye-opening speaker on growing self compassion and mindfulness in women physicians (or other high achievers), reach out to Jessie.https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/speaking.  *Nothing in this episode is medical advice.

Why is it so hard to change? Is it because you don't want it enough? Or don't have the willpower? According to Dr. Shauna Shapiro and the research: the answer is no. Can practicing mindfulness make us wiser? Judge Jeremy Fogel explores how being present in the moment helps him keep a clear mind and stay connected to his true values. Episode summary: What do you think it takes to become wiser, more compassionate, and more open-minded? This week on The Science of Happiness, we bring you one of our most popular episodes. Former district judge Jeremy Fogel shares his insights on how being present can help us make more mindful decisions. He recounts how, after experiencing stress as a judge, his wife suggested he try an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course. After taking the course, Jeremy felt more connected to himself and his surroundings, and decided to make mindfulness a part of his everyday life. The changes Jeremy made had profound impacts on his work as a judge. We also hear from Dr. Shauna Shapiro, a clinical psychologist and professor at Santa Clara University, about how mindfulness affects our moral reasoning. Practice: Mindful Breathing Find a comfortable, seated position and invite your body to relax. Tune in to the sensations it experiences — the touch, the connection with the floor or the chair. Do your best to relax any areas of tightness or tension. Listen to the natural rhythm of your breath, in and out, without trying to control it. Notice where you feel your breath in your body. It might be in your abdomen, chest, throat, or nostrils. See if you can feel the sensations of breath, one breath at a time. As you do this, you may start thinking about other things. Try to notice that your mind has wandered, and say “thinking” or “wandering” in your head softly. Then gently redirect your attention right back to the breathing. Stay here for 5-7 minutes. Finally, notice your whole body seated here once more. Let yourself relax even more deeply, and thank yourself for doing this practice today. This episode covers the fascinating science of mindfulness meditation. The massive explosion in popularity of meditation, has brought about a quiet revolution to the frantic western mind with the result of a complete change in our societies approach to stress management, happiness and well being. Today we're going to get to the bottom of what happens to the brain when we meditate and why it's so beneficial. But we're also going to find out what happens to our levels of happiness, satisfaction, mental health and physical health if we meditate regularly over a long period of time. We're also going to think about how society and business at large will evolve if these techniques continue to be introduced to our schools and companies. So who better to help us find out what all the buzz is about than award winning professor of clinical psychology at Santa Clara University, Dr. Shauna Shapiro. She's a fellow of the Mind and Life Institute co-founded by the Dalai Lama, who we'll be discussing a bit today. Introducing Shauna Shapiro What problem do you solve? She's going to solve two problems for CHARGERS today. Shauna will solve your wandering mind which is when your life is on autopilot and you can't focus or concentrate. She will help you find more compassion for yourself and treat yourself with kindness. Show Notes: When you make a mistake and shame yourself it shuts down the learning centers of your brain. You get stuck in the habit patterns you're trying to change. Self-compassion releases dopamine which turns on the learning centers of the brain and activates motivation. It gives you the strength and courage to move forward. A failed habit is just learning ways that don't work for you. Whatever you practice grows stronger. It is natural for your mind to wander. The key is discipline and compassion. They go hand in hand together. Mindfulness is a way of being present and focusing moment by moment. Mediation is the exercise or practice you do to train your mindfulness. Mindfulness has a lot of great benefits like reducing stress, strengthening your immune system, and improving your sleep quality. Mindfulness can decrease bias and increase decision-making and compassion. The first step to meditation practice is knowing your intention. Why are you doing it? Why is it important? The second thing is knowing when you are going to do it. She recommends doing it first thing in the morning or right before bed. The third thing is to set ridiculously unambitious goals. Start small and meditate for a minute or five. Then work up to more. Finally, be kind to yourself. Recognize that you can begin again in any moment. Adjust, pause, contact your body and mind, and begin again. Know that there is a science behind mindfulness. It's never too late to change. Begin. Practice makes change. Shauna Shapiro's Recharge Round What habit do you think has led to success in your life? Shauna's biggest habit is the 'Good Morning, I Love You' practice. She wakes up, puts her hand on her heart, and treats herself with kindness. If you had one do-over, what would it be? She would've stated how important it was to be on her own team and been a friend to herself sooner.
