Rufus Parnell Jones, the 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner, died Tuesday at Torrance Memorial Medical Center after a battle with Parkinson's disease. For every 100 job openings in Indiana, there are only 72 workers available to fill those roles – experts say one possible reason is the lack of affordable and accessible childcare. Food insecurity increased for the second straight year in 2023, according to researchers. Bird Flu has been found in dairy cows for the first time across nine states, some in the Midwest. Tonight on Trackside, we recap a crazy Detroit Grand Prix. Curt and Kevin recap the Grand Prix and talk about their reaction to it. They also talk about Kyle Larson's waiver finally being granted by NASCAR, and controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire. Kevin believes that racing is a financial business, and even if the track is not perfect, there is serious financial gain to be had from racing at this location. He believes that having one wreck-filled race a year is not all that bad for teams, and fans like chaos.  Later in the the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Scott Dixon. We hear about how Alex Palou's season has not been as dominant as it had been in previous years, and now Scott Dixon is a challenger for the championship win. They talk about Scott Dixon approaching AJ Foyt's win record, and if he can surpass it in his career.  To round out the first hour, Kevin answers some listener questions, like lack of fans at oval races, Ed Carpenter swapping cars, and more.  In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Flavor Flav, and his being Will Power's hype man. Kevin recounts a story of Power at qualifying in Detroit, and how Flav made sure he was in the camera shot during an interview to promote his brand. We talk about Will Power's comments during the race about race control and answer other listener questions. They also talk about David Malukas and what team he could come back and race for this season and next season, and Tom Blomqvist being removed from Meyer-Shank. They also talk about the conflict with Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood.  Later in the second hour, Kevin and Curt talk about the controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire, and the threats Pourchaire received for crashing with Canapino during the race. We hear about IndyCar's stance on the issue, what Canapino had to say, and how Juncos is taking the controversy, and how hard it would be to regulate these types of threats.  Kevin ends the show paying homage to racing legend Parnelli Jones. It was announced that Jones passed during the show, and Kevin talks about his accomplishments, and we hear a statement from PJ Jones, Parnelli's son. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Parnelli Jones Well put it like this, I wouldn't have wanted to race against this tough competitor in his prime!Parnelli Jones was the kind of all-rounder that won in everything he drove. Indy 500, USAC Stock cars, Pikes Peak, Team owner – he became the guy to beat! From being the 1961 Indy 500 Rookie of the year to winning it just two years later, he made a name for himself, fast!At the same time he dominated the Pikes Peak race, to be followed up with a USAC Stock Car crown!Wins in off -road racing in events like the Baja 1000 also cemented his reputation as the guy to beat, as well as his abilities as a team owner which brought him even further success. Having the opportunity to visit PJ at his house in Palos Verde, CA, was such an honor and privilege I will remember it forever. His is definitely in the final few laps of life's race, but was gracious, funny and generous with his time. There is no video to accompany it as I didn't want to show one of our heroes as being a little frail in old age, but I hope you still appreciate this conversation as much as I did. But check out the unique portrait I took of him www.lifewithlegends.comThankyou to my friend Mike Folmer for arranging everything.JB

Salim Akram is a live sound engineer specializing in mixing monitors. He currently works as the Monitor Engineer for seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist Billie Eilish and eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Finneas.  In 2019, he was featured in FOH Magazine and was a Parnelli nominee for the Monitor Engineer of the Year. After attending Art Institute of New England, Salim began to synthesize his technical skills in engineering with his life-long passion for playing music. He and his closest friends co-founded the band Bad Rabbits, where Salim would go on to not only tour with major artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Steve Aoki, Allen Stone, and Taking Back Sunday – but he would have the opportunity to work with producers Teddy Riley, Michael Elizondo, James Fauntleroy, et. al. in the studio. Bad Rabbits has won numerous Boston Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, perform as guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Arsenio Hall, and Craig Ferguson, and perform at huge festivals such as Vans Warped Tour, Reading and Leeds, and SXSW. While Bad Rabbits was writing music and taking an interlude on touring, Salim dove head-first into regular house engineering roles with local venues owned and operated by Bowery/AEG and City Winery, while simultaneously expanding his freelancing repertoire to include contract work for corporate juggernauts such as Dell, Apple, and Google, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Chanel, Puma, Sephora, and the Simmons Leadership Conference. However, when he was asked to build the touring monitor rig for Glassjaw, he realized it was just the catalyst he needed to get back on the road.  Salim was introduced to Ms. Eilish in 2018 and continues to work as her Monitor Engineer through today. When he isn't on tour, he resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and enjoys photography, cooking, and traveling.  Interviewer Host & Producer: Rebecca Wilson Executive Producers: Beckie Campbell & Susan Williams Edited by: Robbie Mortimer soundgirls.org  Sponsored by QSC https://www.qsc.com

Austin Schroeder is a Monitor Engineer based out of San Diego, California, who is currently in rehearsals for the highly anticipated Rage Against the Machine tour. An Iowa native, Austin started on piano at a young age, setting the groundwork for a deep and lifelong understanding and appreciation of music. His teenage years saw him develop more into a bassist, which he played in several jazz bands before ultimately ending up at Full Sail University, hoping for a degree in music recording. After moving to Nashville to work at the famed Blackbird studios, Austin tired of studio life and decided that perhaps he was better suited to life on the road and the more spontaneous feel of live music. A misunderstanding during his interview process at Clair Bros led to an opportunity at a smaller Pennsylania-based company, Allusions Lighting and Sound Production. It was here, that Austin's fate was set, and his career began to flourish. Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year. Michael's career in lighting began in the 70's following experimentation with colored lights and posters in his bedroom as a teenager. At the time, he had no idea he was in for a 40+ year career lighting some of the very top acts to ever perform. Michael has worked for Jefferson Starship, Santana, Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie, Ozzy, and even a Beatle (Sir Paul). He's well known as a great guy with a wild sense of humor and threatened to show up for the podcast recording without pants (we were able to convince him otherwise). He also won a Parnelli in 2016...

It was here, that Austin’s fate was set, and his career began to flourish. Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year. Today’s episode is sponsored by ShowproBeardCo, & Boulevard Carroll.
