Laura brought socks to her client David when she got back to NY. He sent me a photo asking if they were Cashmere because they were so soft and noting how great they looked with the pants he had on. Then I got a pic of his foot under his desk at work the next day. (Ravelry Project Page) On July 7, a man chatted with me on the Red Line about memories of his mother, sisters and daughters crocheting. Emelyn has been wanting to crochet again but is feeling rusty. On July 4th I reminded them how to single & half-double crochet. The first title that springs to mind at the mention of William Golding's name is most often Lord of the Flies. The classic story of a group of schoolboys marooned on a desert island all but made his reputation and has somewhat overshadowed his twelve other novels. Golding was a fascinating and often troubled man, a voracious reader who enjoyed the Odyssey in Greek as well as Georgette Heyer and Jilly Cooper and was an influence on many novelists from Stephen King to Penelope Lively, Ben Okri and Kazuo Ishiguro. Definitely a writer ripe for rediscovery. Now, the Slightly Foxed team sit down with the author's daughter Judy and Golding expert Professor Tim Kendall to discuss the life and work of this brave and highly original writer, whose novels transport the reader to distant but entirely believable worlds. His work grapples with the big questions of existence but his originality as a writer sometimes worked against him, and Lord of the Flies was rejected by seven publishers before it was accepted by Charles Monteith at Faber. It was glowingly reviewed and became a bestseller but, behind the scenes, Golding was struggling with his addiction to alcohol and the fame his writing would bring him. After a poor reception from the critics for several of his following books, including both The Spire and The Pyramid, Golding was thrown into a deep depression. This crisis lasted over ten years, but when he finally returned to writing he went on to produce a series of successful novels – including Rites of Passage, winner of the 1980 Booker Prize. In 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.  The usual round of reading recommendations include South from Granada, Gerald Brenan's recollection of the years he spent in an Andalusian village in the 1920s with visits from the Bloomsbury group; Robert Harris's Precipice, a semi-fictional account of the relationship in 1914 between Prime Minister Asquith, and Venetia Stanley, and Penelope Lively's novel Passing On. Ben Reiser talks to Nathan Clarke about THE PASSING ON. The Passing On takes us inside the world of Black-owned funeral homes, a profession that has been historically vital to the Black community but whose ranks are now dwindling in number. Focusing on 2016 Embalmer of the Year James Bryant and his San Antonio funeral home, we are flies on the wall as Bryant puts his faith in a new generation whom he hopes will pick up his mantle and carry on his legacy. He’s met with resistance from his young intern, Clarence Pierre, who himself is conflicted about his commitment to the profession due to the judgment he feels from the Black Christian community as a queer man. An in-depth and startlingly observant look into a profession many find grim, The Passing On is filled with characters worth rooting for, finding both the beauty and humanity in this under-told story. Winner of a 2021 Golden Badger Award. (JF)

The artwork for this show is actually the front of one of our Send Out Cards.  The inside says "Nothing". It's funny because I'd thought of this title and then had to laugh when I found the exact words on this card... However, I totally disagree with the inside sentiment.  There is a whole lot in life that's scarier than Halloween - for me, at least.  So as always, this is all from my perspective, but I truly believe you'll relate to some of it. First and foremost, I talk about those late night calls I get on December 24th with my customers panicked on getting their Christmas Cards sent.  I'm scared, they'll get mad at me when I tell them they won't get there in time!  I caution all my card senders and those that are sending any kind of Christmas cards - December 15th is the cut off for on time delivery.  Millions of cards are sent from Send Out Cards alone and you mix in everyone else...card jam for sure!  We can help you do them faster, but will always recommend December 15th! Scary, too, is that first day on the job, and as you know I've had many different 'experiences' if you've been listening to me at all.  The first time I went on an advertising sales call was excruciating.  I had no training, and had no idea the technical terms I was supposed to use.  I sat in my car for 2 hours listening to... Aah,bet you  thought I was going tell you everything right here. Nope you'll have to listen in, 'cause there is more that I fear more than Halloween.  So much more!  Halloween is boo's and costumes, and fun.  Being scared for me is the anxiety of that brand new experience, even though I'm excited, I'm still often terrified! What about you?  Do you have a story to share?  Something that scares you more than Halloween?  I'd love to hear in my comment section on my website OneAwesomeCommunity.com Passing On a Spooky Smile, Gail

PASSING ON...OR DROPPING THE BATON GENERATIONS – PART 1

Life's Toolbox on Empower Radio

What does death mean to you? Is it an end or a beginning? Do you really experience a loss when someone near to you passes on? This show focuses on challenging the belief systems that tell us we experience loss when someone dies. We challenge the belief that death is the end of existence. On this show we talk about the never ending connection we have with our loved ones and how death is merely a transition into something new. It is our fear of change that creates the illusion of loss. Listen in as we discuss the truth around death, transition, passing on.
