An Impressionist Painter, An Inspired Madman, A Restless Innovator, A True Legend of Jazz Drums, A Master of Drumming Insanity, and a Genius of the Sticks. These are some of the words that describe Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico. Hailed in the press as “One of the most versatile and musical drummers in music today,” Paul Wertico was a member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1983 to 2001. During that time, he won seven Grammy Awards (three for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, three for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, and one for Best Rock Instrumental Performance), won numerous magazine polls, received several gold records, and played drums & percussion on David Bowie's hit recording (with the Pat Metheny Group), “This Is Not America.” He has played with countless artists and has performed in all 50 states and over 60 countries. Dani is the Israeli-born but Chicago-living jazz prog mastermind behind the group Marbin. We discuss Dani’s history growing up 20 miles south of Tel Aviv, making it to the States to attend Berklee, the history and formation of Marbin, tricking Paul Wertico into being in his band, and learning from Scott Henderson and Allan Holdsworth. We also spend time walking through Dani’s rig including his Suhr guitars, CAE amps, and a bunch of Vertex and Source Audio pedals going through a GigRig G2.Also discussed: tips for setting up a monitor mix by creating an acoustic anchor in reality, Phoebe Bridgers calling David Crosby a little bitch, Chick Corea, seizing counterfeit guitars, skeleton guitars, Takeshi 69, compressor analogies, and the Red Witch Binary Star. It’s 4:20 somewhere.

It was an honor to talk with one of my favorite musicians and biggest musical influences, Gary Husband. In this conversation, Gary talks about his journey from early gigs as a teenager with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, to 36 years of working with Allan Holdsworth, to working with John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, and more. Gary also shares his thoughts about “success” and the difference between waiting for opportunities versus creating opportunities. Be sure to check out Gary’s website and his newly launched VideoCast education videos. They’re amazing! http://www.garyhusband.com Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary’s distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany’s NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n’ bass protagonists Lemon ‘D’ and Dillinja. “I feel pretty fearless because of all the crazy stuff I’ve done. But it’s also just trust and life is life and you kinda just go with the flow. And that is what makes life interesting ya know? If it’s predictable then I think you lose the now.” Paul Wertico is a performer, teacher, bandleader, and clinician. He is a seven time Grammy award winner, Readers Poll winner for Modern Drummer magazine and DRUM! Magazine, 2004 Chicago Tribune “2004 Chicagoan of the Year” among many other lifetime accolades. He is most famously known as Pat Metheny’s drummer for 18 years but should not be pigeon-holed into only that role. He is also a bandleader for his Paul Wertico Trio and improvisational trio Wertico, Cain, and Grey. He is highly experimental with his approach and the instruments he tends to use during his performances including bizarre cymbals, kitchen sinks, and other strange percussion instruments. Claiming that “music plays me”, Paul is a devout musician who lives for the moment of what music can bring. In this episode, we will hear about many of his deep philosophies on performing on the drums, how the human element of imperfection brings out the real beauty in art, how we can become more confident and rooted in what we as artists connect with, and much more! Paul endorses DW Drums, ProMark, Remo and Shure.   You Will Hear About…. Paul’s adventures in Russia, Spain, Italy and China this summer.  Paul’s high energy levels at the age of 66 even after recently needing surgery for two heart stints. He left for Spain three days later. The time Paul flew a Robin aircraft as a reward for getting a fan an extra Pat Metheny ticket. The grey areas in music and art that brings life and character to any given work. Letting the music play you. What a “front beat” is. How we as drummers can tap into what connects us to our playing confidently. Learning how to judge what your playing ACTUALLY sounds like while you play.   Why Should You Listen? People should pay close attention to his philosophies about the relationship between life and the flow of it in particular. If there are musicians out there that have a lot of knowledge and understanding of vocabulary but feel like they aren’t allowing their creativity to flow out of them, you will find this episode particularly helpful. He also shares his perspectives on phrasing ideas with his coined term “front beat” and how that can bring forward a stronger sense of time and pulse within the music. Beyond that, Paul is simply a nice person to listen to. He is incredibly thoughtful, filled with great stories to enhance his perspectives, and is incredibly experienced with this art form. He has been featured on many podcasts in the past, so if this episode interests you, I would recommend checking out any other podcasts that he has been a guest on.   Music featured in this episode:   “Another Side” - Paul Wertico Trio   A Slow Stroll Round a Black Hole Ain’t No Thing The Noisy Neighbour O Man   “Short Cuts: 40 Improvisations” - Wertico, Cain & Grey   Exploring The Creator Always In a Sea of Souls   Photo cred: George Burrows “Drummer Photographer”   Paul’s Socials Instagram Facebook Website   Drumeo Gab’s Socials Instagram Facebook

Today on the show we have the honour and the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Wertico. If you’re at all familiar with the all-time great drummers of the world or you’re a jazz fan then you’ll know his name and his work.   Paul is a 7-time Grammy Award winner, perhaps best known for his almost 20 years playing with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny where his distinctive “flat ride” cymbal style became a defining part of some of the group’s best known recordings.   Paul is an innovative musician and a devoted educator, including his role as Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, and as author of a new book entitled “Turn the Beat Around”.   As you’ll hear us say in this interview, Paul is a man frequently associated with the very word “musicality” and so it was such a delight to get to speak with him and unpack what exactly it means for a drummer to be “musical” and exhibit “musicality”.   We talk about: • How Paul learned the drums and the influential music educator who helped encourage him in developing his own unique identity as a musician. • What it means to “turn the beat around” and how playing what he calls “front beats” can bring a unique flair to a piece of music. • And how it’s possible for his group Wertico Cain and Gray to perform 100% improvised compositions together with no prior discussion, ranging from 30 seconds to several minutes long which have a coherence and structure that mean the listener would never guess they were improvised.   We also talk about practicing with a metronome versus a backing track, what role the drummer plays in different genres and situations, and how he ended up ditching the drums to just play cymbals on a tango record in Italy.   This was a blast and there’s a ton of insights and wisdom here for drummers and musicians of all stripes.   This is Musicality Now, from Musical U.     Subscribe For Future Episodes! We depart a bit in this episode to feature a filmmaker instead of a drummer. Jeremy Bout, a prolific filmmaker, speaker and overall inspiring individual, is the founder of Edge Factor, whose mission is to “inspire and equip communities through the power of storytelling.” The story Jeremy talks with us about here is his incredible film,  Masters of Resonance, which features the story of John Good of DW drums and the journey of a centuries old log from river to rock stage. The film is actually way more nuanced than that, but it’s something you have to experience. For it’s not only about the building a a great DW kit for famed drummer Neil Peart, but also an inspiring story of following one’s passion, whether that be drumming, drum making, or any other thing you call your own. I first learned about Masters of Resonance while doing the first interview for Contraption, which was with drummer Paul Wertico. I had actually interviewed Paul the day after he returned from LA as a panel member for a screening of Masters of Ressonance, in which he appears. Jeremy was happy to share his story and the story of the film, which I encourage you to see.
