Success does not come easy, you need to have a structured routine, the right mind-set to work and learn more and the ability to change your habits and adapt your behaviour. In today's episode, fitness entrepreneur and gym consultant Phil interviews Rob on all things business, health, and fitness, how to overcome the battle between them and succeed in all areas in the end. KEY TAKEAWAYS Habits and behaviours change. What are the things that you've developed over the years have changed or what's your routine? The main thing I've developed is a hunger for learning. This was due to a fear of rejection. You should never let your past hinder you from achieving success, always have the mind-set that you are also going to acquire success. Do not be jealous that other people are being successful and you are not, always work towards your goals and in the long run, success will come your way. That is a trait that you should develop in your business life and your personal life, don't be jealous or never hate successful Be an open-minded person and always be accepting feedback, whether they are good or bad because the more you learn to take feedback from people, the more you are learning. Feedback from someone may bea great idea for your business and personal life to thrive. There are things you don't agree with, there are things you'll challenge others, but whatever you want to do in your life, you can go and find it, you can go and ask for help. This is because you are also human too. Ways you can change your mind-set. One is a natural change over time. The natural progression of your life will create change. There's a desire to change, e.g. I want to be a better person, I want to grow, I want to improve or there's a hard event in your life which shocks you. Someone gets murdered, you lose a family member for me and you just question everything. Try and control the change in terms of mind-set by wanting to learn, wanting to be better, wanting to educate yourself, being curious all the time, being interested in people, being resourceful. All those states of mind are ones that help you grow, that help you develop, don't just change every 10 years because life takes you that way or just wait until something very bad happens. In terms of routines, learn something every day, meet interesting people, do podcasts if you can, listen to audiobooks or listen to podcasts, get involved in great conversations and have good mentors. Have a set structure of your routine and don't let anything alter you from getting what it is that you had set to achieve that day. Stage one of creating your ideal routine is what works for you. What kind of body type are you in? Somebody gets up early or somebody works well late at night. How much sleep do you need? Figure all that out and then create sort of an ideal routine. You got to think about what's right for your clients, what's right for your family and then you create the structure, which works. You should look forward to having a personal trainer in your business or personal life because once you have that, you then have accountability and thus you can follow your routine very well. Do not fear hiringthem because you think that you will waste a lot of money on them, think in a more positive way that you will achieve your goals set in that routine. If you're teaching stuff and people aren't going out there and almost replicating, telling people what you've taught them, you should know you're not doing my job very well. People should try to copy you and that's when you know you're successful. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Try and learn from everyone. BEST MOMENTS “Ego is a lot of fear and insecurity.” “Be a master of your destiny.” “When you work for someone, what you desire the most probably is freedom.” “Discipline equals freedom.” “Certain amount of routine equals freedom.” “It doesn't matter what my routine looks like, what matters is what is the ideal routine for you?” “We all need accountability because the easiest person to lie to is you.” “If you let go of a lower-paying client, you create space for a high paying client.” “The more expensive something is, typically the better it is.” “If you don't ask the right questions, you're not going to find out the truth.” “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.” “Learning is learning something you didn't know. I was absolutely ecstatic to do this episode today!  I have listened to Ben Coomber for a very very long time.  I have stepped in and out of several podcasts over the years but Ben is the only one that I have always stuck with. I have taken so so so much from what he has said over the years and still do to this day.  Ben has interviewed some very very high profile people over the years, CT Fletcher, Phil Learney and Phil Graham being just a few, but in all honesty it's his personal 10-15 minute episodes I always tune in for as his mental clarity and knowledge is extremely infectious on everything to do with mental and physical health A couple of weeks ago after listening to an episode of his I was like fuck it I'll reach out to him and see if he wanted to come on the show.  The amount of times I have done this is now hilarious.  What I do notice is that it's the people who really do have the ability to provide value that say yes! This was one of the ones that made me super super pumped though.  There are a handful of people that have helped shape my knowledge and view on nutrition and Ben is certainly one.  The fact he came down despite being super busy with his BTN academy, his new supplement range Awesome Supplements and few other amazing projects he is working on was amazing. In all honesty I could have sat down with Ben for hours and asked him question after question.  This episode jumps through several topics - I used it as an excuse to ask him some questions I wanted the answers on in all honesty. In this podcast Mark interview's well respected coach Phil Learney. Phil has been a prominent figure in Strength and Conditioning fields for close to 20 years. In this time he has established and continues to build a reputation based around his intelligent, observational and results based coaching. Phil is without a doubt one of the most passionate guys I have ever spoken to in my 11 years in the industry. At 39 years old Phil's story reminds me a lot of my own. Overweight as a child he was bullied as a kid at school (thankfully this never happened to me) and has no qualms opening up about the lengths that it went to. Raised in a tough village up north, Phil quite openly talks about other kids throwing tables and chairs at him in class due to his weight and says that the bullying was relentless. This forced him to join a gym, lose the weight and starting lifting weights to improve his physique and confidence. This ultimately lead to a career in fitness with Phil becoming a personal trainer after completing a sports science degree at University. After moving to London Phil built a fantastic career training clients (many high profile) in one of the most affluent areas of the City. Just recently he has removed himself from one to one coaching (apart from one client he is training now who he can't name!) to focus on education with his 'Advanced Coaching Academy' and regularly tours for seminars across the UK and internationally. We discuss in depth how he has evolved in the industry and questions all the time some of the information he used to put out. We talk about how there seems to be more of a common sense approach emerging in the industry now and how most people (general public) do not need to worry about hormones, insulin, detoxification and eating out of tupperware daily to get results. We even discuss how most people generally only have time to grab food on the run due to busy lifestyles and may only cook a meal when they get home. Therefore we look at how places like McDonalds (yes McDonalds), Pret and M+S can cater for your macronutrient needs without you having to stress about cold chicken breasts in plastic containers. We discuss dis-ordered eating - something we have both been through and why most people simply want to lose weight and enjoy life without becoming over-obsessive and constantly feeling restricted. We discuss why you should always enjoy social occasions rather than dread them because you are trying to lose fat, the accuracy or inaccuracy of My Fitness Pal and why you should never totally BAN one food group.
