In the bustle of Christmas, we can miss the best gift that God gave us! Just as Mary sat at the feet of Jesus while Martha hurried around stressed and busy, listen to this important reminder that one thing is needed - to love and listen to Him.
Everyday people are falling victims to scams and fraud. Embarrassment and guilt can prevent people from reporting the incident. Not everyone is aware that there are resources available to help navigate the justice system. Today's guest is Rachel Gibson. Rachel is the Director of the Center of Victim Service Professionals at the National Center for Victims of Crime where she works to further the mission by supporting and overseeing programs for victim service professionals, providing training and technical assistance. Show Notes: [0:48] - Rachel shares her background and her role as the Director of the Center of Victim Service Professionals. [2:53] - We talk a lot about prevention work, but there aren't as many resources for what to do after an incident. [3:47] - Rachel explains the background and how the Center for Victims of Crime was founded. [5:46] - Many victims are experiencing polyvictimization and may not realize they are victims of a crime at first. [7:14] - 24-hour hotlines are available and very impactful. [8:51] - Rachel describes the different programs that she is involved in at the Center for Victims of Crime. [9:57] - Part of the work she does is helping people realize the intersection and connections between different types of crime. [12:08] - Oftentimes in these cases, this is the first time victims have been involved with the justice system. [14:02] - Maybe a victim doesn't want to go to law enforcement, but the crime should still be reported. [15:12] - Financial fraud is a crime where society victim blames right out of the gate. [16:24] - The conversation shouldn't be about who is victimized, but rather who is being targeted. [19:17] - Google is a great first step in determining legitimacy. [21:51] - Fraudsters are banking on targets not being knowledgeable. [23:55] - We have to come to the conversation with an attitude of empowerment. [26:26] - Rachel explains how partnerships are important as service professionals will likely hear about crimes. [28:47] - Legally, there's a difference between a scam and fraud. But there's always an opportunity to connect people to resources. [32:07] - Think about what someone needs in the moment. It might not be to go to law enforcement. [35:03] - Talk to your friends and family. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. [36:24] - A big trend right now in questions and concerns is the intersection of AI and fraud. Stalking is a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that causes a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of others. And each year, over 13 million people experience it in various ways - being followed, receiving unwanted communications or gifts, through social media, and more. And when the stalker is a former intimate partner, post-separation abuse can materialize as stalking. Rachel Gibson of the National Center for Victims of Crime leads us through the realities of stalking, its prevalence, how it manifests, how it impacts victims, how technology is weaponized by stalkers, and the steps we can take to counter these unwanted behaviors. Rachel Gibson is the Director of the Center for Victim Service Professionals at the National Center for Victims of Crime, where she works to further the mission by supporting and overseeing NCVC's programs for victim service professionals, providing training and technical assistance. She also is the founder of RG Williams Consulting designed to engage and support domestic violence programs and national and international gender-based agencies and non-profits that support staff of color and communities at the margins. Ms. Gibson was formerly a Senior Technology Safety Specialist on the Safety Net Team at the National Network to End Domestic Violence where she worked to increase the safety and privacy of survivors and victims of crime. There, she developed training and technical assistance and provided expert thought leadership to build the capacity of victim service providers, private industries, lawmakers, and communities at large to provide advocacy and support to survivors in this digital society. Prior to NNEDV, Ms. Gibson also worked at the National Resource Center on Reaching Victims through the Vera Institute of Justice, and at the former Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence as the Technology Safety Program Specialist.
We are not grateful because we are joyful; we are joyful because we are grateful. There is a joy that comes from abiding in Jesus, and this is a kind of joy that even defies the devil. This sermon inspires us about how we can have joy amidst challenges; without diminishing the troubles or difficulties we face, we discover how the joy of the Lord can be our strength – and how we can therefore be resilient regardless of what life throws at us.
The culture war these days is heavily focused on schools, with many prominent elected officials in Nebraska calling for defunding public education in favor of vouchers for charter schools. Today Rachel Gibson and Sarah Smolen discuss the education climate, how to navigate a culture war that often is intentionally vague and operating in bad faith and possible solutions they are offering through their work on the Education Policy Action Team for the League of Women Voters of Nebraska, which has just launched Schools 101: an awareness initiative for parents, neighbors, community groups, advocacy groups, and anyone impacted by public education here in Nebraska. Rachel Nichols' career story is packed with memorable characters from all manner of genre entertainment. She was Kiera Cameron, the ass-kicking cop from the future, on Continuum, one of the only locally shot sci-fi series to actually set their story in Vancouver. She was Alexa, the waitress who enjoys a birthday threesome with Samantha and Richard in an iconic episode of Sex and the City. She was possibly the worst babysitter ever seen on screen in The Amityville Horror, a role for which she was nominated for Best Frightened Performance at the MTV Movie Awards and Choice Movie Scream Scene at the Teen Choice Awards. She starred as Ashley Seaver in Criminal Minds, as an FBI special agent whose father was a serial killer, and as the brilliant Rachel Gibson in Alias. We saw her as gestapo officer Martha Stroud, sworn to guard and observe Chelah Horsdal's Helen Smith, in The Man in the High Castle, and as Angela Azarath, the duplicitous mother of Raven, on Titans. This year, she was revealed as the woman who ran down Eddie in A Million Little Things. Her filmography also includes memorable roles in big-budget projects like G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Star Trek, and Charlie Wilson's War. In this entertaining and contemplative conversation, Rachel reflects on her time in Kiera's shoes (“We have a lot of similarities… We're loyal. We will throw down for anybody that we love”), how working alongside Kim Cattrall on Sex and the City changed her life and career, learning how not to take shit, her husband's mad love for Brian Markinson, and what makes this versatile and beloved actress tick. Read Indigo at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or your local indie.Show NotesIn between our recording and release of this episode, Kristen Callihan did release a new book, Outmatched, which is cowritten with Samantha Young. But don't miss Scottie from Managed, who will appear later in season 2 as a book that blooded Jen.Munro. That's it. That's the show note. Some of the best of 2019 lists from Bookish, NPR and Kirkus. Sarah's website has all of her past Best of the Year Lists for the Washington Post. Amazon also has a best of the year list, but the Goodreads Award list is strange.Emma Donoghue's Room was a big literary fiction book back in 2010, and it was on all the end of the year lists.Jen will be appearing at The Book Cellar on Dec 7, 2019 if you're looking for something to do. She'll be talking about the best books of the year with other critics.Around the same time we recorded this episode, Kini at SmexyBooks wrote this thoughtful piece about transparency in romance reviewing.Kylie Scott's Repeat was also on our Amnesia episode.Love's Sweet Arrow is a romance-only bookstore in Chicago's south suburbs.Quelle suprise!.Jen also likes Rebecca Zanetti, who also resists romantic suspense that is just "women in peril" plots.Face/Off is a very goofy movie from the late 90s. So of course they're going to remake it.In this Juno Rushdon series, Jen wants the boss's book. We're talking about historicals, but we're not talking about Brazen and the Beast even though Jen wants you to know it's spectacular and you should definitely read it.I guess we're singing this episode: Just One Night is a twist on Phil Collins's One More Night in the Moulin Rouge movie and All Night Long.Jenny Nordbak recommended Dare to Love a Duke to Sarah, and after the unreliable narrators essay, Amy Jo Cousinsrecommended Any Old Diamonds to Jen.Who wouldn't want to talk about Frankenstein, Shelley, and Wollstonecraft?Don't sleep on the Gilded Age.Kennedy's Basketball series is also great. But in The Kingmaker duet, she also tackles the problem of missing and murdered indiginous women and land grabs on Native land. Here is a list of #OwnVoices Native American authors from BookRiot, and another from Smart Bitches, but Jen specifically recommends Pamela Sanderson.Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik.Jen interviewed Robin Lovett for Kirkus. And our friend @Bandherbooks was quite taken with the "space chaise" in this book.Jen and Sarah tried so hard to undersatnd the cinnamon roll phenomenon.Maybe you want to check out Jen's many amazing Pinterest boards featuring very specific romance novel cover kinks.Looking to buy some swag? You can buy Fated Mates buttons from Best Friend Kelly and Sarah has an awesome line of romance themed t-shirts and other swag from Jordanene. This week, our listener-recomended books are When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn and Truly, Madly, Yours by Rachel Gibson.
Dr. Rachel Gibson, Professor of Politics at the University of Manchester, discusses British political parties' digital campaigning from websites to social media. We take a longitudinal dive into the development of digital campaigning in the UK, and compare it to campaigning practices in the US. Then, we examine how citizens' political participation is evolving through their use of digital communication technologies.
This week we read a delicious late nineties treat, See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson. It's got an ambitious journalist, a bad boy hockey goalie, Doc Martens, crushed velvet dresses, scandalous writing under a nom de plume (!), and.... tattoo licking. Into. It. If you like alpha male romances and verbal sex scenes, this is the book for you. Bonus content: Melody trying to hockey (or sportzball at all), the wild world of dolphins, and a look into our friendship you may not have been expecting. BIG THANKS to Alison Wilkinson for sharing the review she wrote of our show for parent.com. We felt so honored and 'seen.' https://www.parent.com/listening-heaving-bosoms-podcast/ Self-Love Recommendation: Melody: embrace your weird. Melody loves the macabre in general, specifically murder and cults, and she literally danced in a parking lot when she saw that Last Podcast on the Left's 300th episode arc was a deep dive into The People's Temple and Jonestown. Check it out if that's also on your venn diagram of love! Erin: Yeah! Embrace what you love, even if it's terrible. A friend of hers saw Alison's review and divulged that she read all of the Shade of Vampire series. Own your excellence :)

This weeks show featured Rachel Gibson, Olivia Kock, Haley Bonge, and Luann Rabe
In a KWL Podcast first, we checked in with an editor from a major publishing house, Tessa Woodward from HarperCollins. In her eleven years at Harper, specializing in editing romance, women's fiction, and historical fiction, Tessa has seen the industry go through the parallel changes in the emergence of eBooks and self-publishing. Tune in to her Tessa and KWL US Manager Christine Munroe chat about: The range of genres Tessa edits: women's fiction, romance (historical and contemporary), some mystery and non-fiction. She is specifically always looking for great romance, especially historical What the submission process is like at HarperCollins. Avon Impulse has an open submission policy – it's one of the few remaining imprints that offers that opportunity for authors without literary agents. They receive 100-400 submissions a month What Tessa looks for in a new submission: a great voice She had no background in romance before she started at Avon. How she fell in love with the genre, and the “classic” romance authors she read first in her self-education when she first started: Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Rachel Gibson, Stephanie Laurens, Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Now, Tessa is a big-time romance book lover who rarely reads outside the genre During a typical workday, Tessa doesn't have time to do much reading or editing. She reviews covers, marketing and publicity, writes and approves copy, takes editorial calls with authors, and answers a lot of emails Why Tessa doesn't expect an unpublished author to have a social media platform established when they approach a publishing house Her one big pet peeve when it comes to authors who do have social media already in place When she's looking at self-published authors interested in a traditional deal, she's much more interested in the potential of this specific story than eBook sales track record for previous books. She still has to pitch the new book to bookstores, who won't be very interested in hearing just about eBook sales or free download numbers The main benefits, from Tessa's point of view, of working with a publisher today. You get an experienced support team who share the publishing burden with you, so that you can focus on writing your next book. Tessa joined HarperCollins 11 years ago, and has seen the industry undergo changes in digital publishing and self-publishing, particularly in romance. She thinks new digital opportunities have opened up the chance for publishers to experiment and publish a lot more books, and a wider range of voices How she feels about hybrid authors – “As long as we're working together, I think it's great!” Hybrid authors bring new insights, and can create opportunities for new hybrid marketing models and more Senior Editor Tessa Woodward edits a wide array of romance, women's fiction, and historical fiction. On the romance side, she edits authors across all genres, including the New York Times and USA Today bestsellers Tessa Dare, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Jennifer Bernard, and Maya Rodale. Her women's fiction titles range from USA Today bestseller Shelley Noble's beach-set novels, to Molly McAdams' New York Times bestselling New Adult stories, to Lisa Turner's psychological mysteries, and the darker, historical ORPHAN #8, a debut from Kim van Alkemade. She is the US editor for international bestseller Paullina Simons. On the nonfiction side, she is publishing THE WORLD OF MR. SELFRIDGE. She is looking for more women's fiction with strong characters, both historical and contemporary, as well as all genres of romance.
