Racing video game for NES from 1988

Episode 81: The NES Hey Listener, we're officially kicking off a new series on the show. Periodically I'll be sitting down with other gamers to discuss one of their favorite video systems and the games they loved to play on it. We're kicking things off with my retro gaming buddy Ben Frietsch and we're going on a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) deep dive. So blow into a cartridge and let's get this show started. Topics this week include: Your host isn't good at starting the show because his ass is bleeding. The Christmas that changed your host's life. The history of the original NES roll out to the US market. Nintendo peripherals of yore. The greatest A Side/B Side video game ever. The original Super Mario Bros trilogy. Spending a Summer swimming and mapping the Legend of Zelda. We respect, but don't love Mega Man. Trying to beat Metroid as an 8 year old is like playing an open world game without a map. Contra: you can't wear a shirt when you're fighting aliens. Thank you stoners for Master Blaster. Sawing a ninja in half. What a terrible night to have a curse. RPGs on the NES. The brutal difficulty of TMNT. The Goonies II just doesn't make any sense. Scrooge McDuck: Capitalist Colonizer. Good luck landing your plane in Top Gun. Ramming JAWS with a boat. Hey, if you had a boat, what would you get? Rygar and Karnov. Do you think Mike Tyson's Punch Out will get retroactively canceled? It wasn't fair to play as Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. What if they made a simulation RC Pro Am? Arcade game version of sports are the best sports games. A side rant about Andre the Giant backing down to Bad News Brown/Allen. Going right and beating people up. Are you bad enough to save the president?Everyone should play River City Randsom. To help the show grow please give it 5 Stars on Apple Podcast or Spotify. Do you know a friend who would be into the subject matter of this episode? Please share the episode link with them.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on MegaMan 2/X, looking at them as different platformers from the time. We set it in context a bit. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Three enemies Issues covered: Dog Game Club, playing a couple games instead of one, fighting mens for their weapons, playing second iterations, bringing in past favorites, setting the game in its time, mascot games, structure and wanting to choose your order of attack, using the boss for its weapons, technical limitations and difficulty, learning a level, generosity with powerups, run-based play, grinding for drops, some things that feel unfair the first time you fight them, getting the gist, having wall stages, annual release schedule, Mega Man 10 or X, tic-tac-toe enemy board, dabbling in some enemies, not knowing what order to progress, using passwords, possible orders of enemies, damage types and using the right tools for the job, Tim shades Billy Mitchell, deriving stuff from Mega Man, wanting to run, spawning enemies rhythmically rather than placement, how the platforming feels, being more methodical, character design for collision in this and Mario, good characterization with fewer states, swapping, not designing for you controller, having to be able to go to any level first, where you can get to powerups, homework: watch out for cool level design moments, books about the inside, keeping the good stuff, keeping current through peer recommendations, finding a friend group, listening to podcasts, not feeling like you have to keep up, finding threads through games, following journalists, first person football, losing perspective, the ways games are impacted by other media, butt explosion T-shirt, reactions in games, why games hit when, a return to Anor Londo. I don't know how to describe Snake Rattle N Roll. A cult classic? A hidden gem? I think people that grew up with it, love it. And if you didn't play it as a kid, you probably won't like it now. But for my money, it's one of the best, most creative games on the NES. And it's about damned time it got its own episode of RTG. If you've never played it, you control a snake and you have to climb a mountain and eat pieces of yourself without getting stepped on or blown up, and the whole game is in an isometric view and features some of the toughest platforming on the NES. And if that didn't convince you? You also get to fight toilet seats. C'mon now. My brother Josh and I used to play this all the time as kids, so this felt like the perfect episode for him to make his RTG debut. We talk about how stupidly difficult Snake Rattle N Roll was, why we loved it anyway, he tells me about the final boss (as I've never got there before), and yes, we tell a couple stories about fighting as kids. And before we Rattle and Roll, I serve up another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about Mario sports games, and whether or not the magic is gone. What's the best time of day to do your gaming? And will Breath of Fire ever get some love around these parts? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring 3 Rare developed NES gems: Battletoads, RC Pro-Am, and NARC. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! The Sega Genesis released in 1989, but it was not until Sonic the Hedgehog would release in June of 1991 that Sega would really begin to gain market share against Nintendo. The release of Sonic as well as an aggressive ad campaign, would lead to Sega bringing serious competition to Nintendo for the first time. Sega followed up the Genesis with creating the Sega CD which brought a new level of audio as well as improved visuals to the system. Unfortunately, Sega released the 32X shortly before the Saturn would release and would essentially mark the beginning of Sega retreating from console manufacturing. We discuss all of that and a whole lot more on this episode of the Nerdthusiast Gaming Podcast! RC Pro-Am is not only one of my favourite games on the NES, but it's one of the best games in that iconic little grey box's library. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit here and let anyone say anything different. Fortunately, nobody seems to be. The game is pretty basic. There's no real car customization, no multi-player, it only features one game mode, and there isn't even any in-game music, but none of that matters. You control a red car, you try to drive faster than blue, green and (cheating) yellow cars, and it's just a really fun experience. The game is over thirty years old, and I'll argue it's as playable today as it was back in the 80's. My buddy Brad is my guest this week, and we talked about how less was more when it came to the NES sometimes, with RC Pro-Am being exhibit A for that argument. We also touched on the fact that this was the beginning of great things for RARE as a developer, and how I didn't realize "R.C" stood for "remote control" until about a week ago... And before we talk about my incompetence, it's time for another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'! This week, we talked about how some games are synonymous with their creators (Hideo Kojima, specifically), and whether or not that's a detriment to the games themselves. Someone asks how often I get "you should play _____" messages, and how I respond to them. And I share my initial thoughts on Metroid Dread (it's very, very good.) PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring some retro racers - Super Off-Road, Uniracers, and Virtua Racing! Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! My guest today is Chris Suellentrop. Chris is writer on national affairs & digital culture and his work has appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Kotaku, Slate and Wired. Chris has been involved in political writing since 2000, but over the past few years he has become more and more focussed on videogames. He also hosts the excellent podcast Shall We Play a Game? which was recently featured on NPR. We talk about how the Atari crash afforded Chris a rich library of games as a kid, if presidential candidates play games, why a university paper on Myst changed how he viewed games forever, and how in college a dormitory wide Madden tournament reignited his love of games and forged some of his fondest videogame memories. Hey all, I'm Bill, I love to talk about video games. I've been playing games since my mother used to take me to visit my grandmother at the bar she worked at (I know) and there was a Donkey Kong game there. From minute one I was hooked. Derrick and Pat, both consummate racing fans and aficianados of destruction smash head-first into Mantis Burn Racing and it's Battle Cars DLC. Mantis Burn Racing is a combat racer in the spirit of RC Pro-Am. The Battle Cars DLC adds an element of 'Arch Rivals' to it! TO anyone unfamiliar with these old-school games, that means all sportsmanship goes out the window and the emphasis is now to make everyone else your bitch. Get mad, fight dirty, and talk $#!T... strategically! Mantis Burn Racing is a top-down racing game combining real-world physics with intuitive controls in ‘one-more-go' style races. The game has it's high points and low points, like needing relatively low-end hardware (due to being a top-down racer). On the other hand, the menus and text screens seem to last forever, and reloading is noticably long. We had a lot to say about this one. Check it out
Earl and Jurek play 2 racing games on the NES this week! The guys try out Bump n' Jump and RC Pro Am! They discover that while RC Pro Am is the superior game, Bump n' Jump has it's own unique charm. The common theme between them, like many NES games, is the insane difficulty! The guys also discuss the Transformers at length! Come have a drink with us! Cheers!
In this episode Greg and George look at one of the very first games that Blizzard developed (back before they were even KNOWN as Blizzard), a fun racing game called Rock n' Roll Racing! So, we're late. Unfortunately, right after we recorded this one, I had some personal obligations to attend to, so the episode wasn't able to get edited quite as fast as I wanted. But here it is! We have (now outdated) information on the PSN outage, our Gaming Shout Outs, and our next installment of the Gaming History Museum where we cover the RC Pro Am series. Of course, we also have our Top 5. 0:00 - Intro 1:17 - Hackers vs. Corporations 13:49 - Game Shout Out! 20:07 - Gaming History Museum - RC Pro Am 38:12 - Top 5: Reasons Hackers are NOT Helping the Community 39:10 - Outro We're still looking for votes for the caption contest, so check out http://www.rfgeneration.com to vote! Thanks for listening!
