This month's huge parade in Beijing for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia prompted much debate — both about the array of new missiles, drones and other military technology on display, and about the presence of not only Vladimir Putin, but also the North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un. But while Beijing is happy to demonstrate its newfound military confidence, the parade is also a reminder of the increased attention China has been paying to its own role in World War II, with a growing number of museums and exhibits dedicated not only to its fight against Japan, but also — despite current tensions — to wartime military cooperation between China and the US, in the form of the Flying Tigers and the Doolittle Raiders. Melinda Liu, veteran Beijing bureau chief of Newsweek, and Vice-President of the Royal Asiatic Society in Beijing, discusses the contemporary resonances of these wartime echoes, as well her family connection to a period of history which is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the image China presents to the world.Photo: Kremlin.ru / CC BY 4.0________________________________________The views and opinions expressed on this podcast are those of the speakers and are not necessarily those of the SOAS China Institute.________________________________________SOAS China Institute (SCI) SCI Blog SCI on X SCI on LinkedIn SCI on Facebook SCI on Instagram ________________________________________Music credit: Sappheiros / CC BY 3.0
Samuel Adams (b. 1985) is an American composer. Gramophone Magazine praised Adams as “among the most interesting composers of the millennial generation in his negotiation of the tensions that shape and define his musical narratives: between directness and implication, silence and resonance, emotion and its aftermath.” His work resists the traditional tensions of classical music, blending acoustic and digital sounds in inventive, texturally rich compositions. He has been commissioned by a number of major ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New World Symphony, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and The Living Earth Show. On the podcast, Adams talks about growing up in the Bay Area, working with the San Francisco Symphony, and the influence of composer Ingram Marshall on his life and work.Music: Études by Samuel Adams, performed by Conor Hanick; Violin Diptych by Samuel Adams, performed by Karen Gomyo and Conor Hanick (Other Minds Records); Shade Studies by Samuel Adams, performed by Sarah Cahill (Irritable Hedgehog)Follow Samuel Adams on Instagram.samuelcarladams.comFollow us on Instagram and Facebook.otherminds.orgContact us at otherminds@otherminds.org.The Other Minds Podcast is hosted and edited by Joseph Bohigian. "This work is built around and features Paul Lewin's beautiful recording of Victory Shaft Geevor mine. The more I listen, the more we listen to places and spaces, the more we can hear their history, how these structures inhabit and belong to the landscape they exist within. With its immense depth, the field recording captures the vibrations of the mine, trembling and humming in response to wind. These sounds and frequencies have an extraordinary range and the more I listened and responded to them, the more I heard how empathetic these dark sounds were. As if the walls of the mine shaft were breathing and sighing in response to the wind. My aim was to heighten this experience for the listener. "The mine shaft recording immediately reminded me of the sounds we can elicit from inside the cavity of a prepared piano. I used prepared piano samples to heighten the reverberations we hear in the field recording. In effect, to animate the inside walls of the mine shaft with these additional prepared piano sounds. I then incorporated my composition for vibraphone and cello – the vibraphone, a metal instrument evoking the tin mine's history, and the vibraphone's watery sounds reminding us of the site's sea depths, the cello's frequencies blending with the lower notes of the prepared piano and the mine's humming vibrations." In this book talk, Farhana Mayer presents her book, 'An Introduction to Qur'anic Ecology and Resonances with Laudato Si', which explores Qur'an-based theological and ethical principles applicable to integral ecology. The book serves as a vital guide for Muslims addressing today's ecological and environmental challenges, drawing strong parallels with the themes in Pope Francis's 'Laudato Si'. Farhana delves into central Qur'anic concepts, such as the interconnected unity of all creation, the innate nature of God and humankind, and the principles of mercy, balance, justice, and moderation. She also discusses key critiques of human actions from an Islamic perspective, which align closely with Catholic teachings.
Mohamed is a North African-Egyptian Muslim settler of color on Turtle Island. He is an interdisciplinary activist-scholar of Indigenous, Black, critical race, and Islamic studies, as well as gender, sexuality, abolition, and decolonization with extensive fieldwork experience in the Middle East-North Africa, Asia, and Turtle Island. He is a professor and the author of Islam & Anarchism: Relationships & Resonances. In this first part of our conversation, we discuss the meaning of identity, home, and belonging and how this informs our building of community. Mohamed talks to us about his analysis of Palestine through the framework of 1492, illustrating as ever that all struggles for liberation are connected - a free Palestine cannot be separate from Indigenous land rematriation and Black reparations. He also tells us about the student encampment at Columbia, where he was the Arcapita Visiting Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African studies. Mohamed asks us to go beyond rhetoric in our pursuit of freedom, to seek to understand what it means to be human, and to honor that land is a spiritual subject. “Palestine 1492” event with Haymarket Books feral feminisms article Mohamed's IG Leah's IG The views expressed by guests are their own and their appearance on the program does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent.
Gregory Shaw joins Edge of Mind with a rare and insightful glimpse into the profound wisdom traditions of Western esotericism. Too often, spiritual seekers in the West feel they must look to the East to find depth and authenticity in their practices. However, this dialogue between Andrew and Gregory powerfully demonstrates the richness and relevance of the Neoplatonist and theurgic lineages that are foundational to the Western philosophical and mystical canon.Listeners will be captivated by the scholar's ability to draw parallels between these ancient Greek teachings and the transformative practices of Eastern tantra. Concepts like alignment, embodiment, and the role of the "daimon" or divine presence within the soul are explored with nuance and clarity. This cross-pollination of ideas not only expands one's understanding of both traditions, but also points the way towards an integrative spirituality that can help address the fragmentation and disconnection so pervasive in the modern world.Whether one is already steeped in Neoplatonism or new to this rich vein of Western esotericism, this podcast offers a rare opportunity to learn from two brilliant thinkers who are deeply immersed in these lineages. The discussion is sure to inspire listeners to delve deeper into the wisdom that has been present in their own cultural heritage all along, waiting to be rediscovered and brought to life.

On 30th January 2024, Farhana Mayer presented a research seminar at AMI on ‘Qur'anic Principles of Integral Ecology', based on her publication Praise to God, Lord of the Worlds, An Introduction to Qur'anic Ecology and Resonances with Laudato Si' (Laudato Si' Research Institute, Oxford, 2023). In her presentation, having highlighted that integral ecology is based on the idea that everything is interconnected and includes socio-economic as well as environmental matters, she explained how the Qur'anic integral ecological perspectives are founded on the scriptural viewpoints of: unity and the interconnectedness of God, humanity and the cosmos (tawḥīd); all creation as ‘signs of God' (āyāt Allāh) and constituting a book of revelation; and humankind's role as the divinely-chosen deputy/successor on earth (khalīfah fi'l-arḍ). She discussed how the key Qur'anic ethical virtues of justice (ʿadl), equitability (qisṭ), balance (mīzān/taʿādul), moderation (wasaṭīyah), and above all mercy (raḥmah) are applicable to integral ecology. Unpacking these, she related them to the principles enshrined in the Islamic names of God (asmāʾ Allāh al-ḥusnā) which, in addition to providing a portrait of God, also serve as an ethical framework within which to position good environmental and socio-economic practices. Describing the principles of the divine names as the ultimate scales, she drew attention to the pivotal role of raḥmah in configuring balance. Furthermore, she related the divine names to humankind's God-endowed nature (fiṭrah), reinforcing the theological concept of humankind as deputies on earth. The ecological and environmental implications of the above were highlighted, including the evident imperatives for balanced, moderate, just, equitable and merciful ways for humanity to engage with each other, with the other living creatures on earth, and with regard to the planet and its resources.

The sound OM (A,U,M) is the sacred chant of Sanatana Dharma, Hinduism. Sounds originate from three points in the Human Body. From the Mouth, Throat and Abdomen. The alphabets of any and every Language must have these letters. Atom to the Galaxies. So when the is a stimuli there is electro magnetic activity. Ultimately our brain decodes everything electro magnetically and it is converted into understandable message when they are processed and sent back. These vibrations as understood in the light of electromagnetism has thrown some interesting results. As said earlier, every thing vibrates, including the Earth. And Vibration causes resonance. Earth moves, is in Motion and hence Vibrates. So it ought to produce Electro Magnetic Waves. Schumann resonances are the principal background in the electromagnetic spectrum beginning at 3 Hz and extending to 60 Hz, and appear as distinct peaks at extremely low frequencies (ELF) around 7.83 (fundamental),14.3, 20.8, 27.3 and 33.8 Hz. In the normal mode descriptions of Schumann resonances, the fundamental mode is a standing wave in the Earth–ionosphere cavity with a wavelength equal to the circumference of the Earth. This lowest-frequency (and highest-intensity) mode of the Schumann resonance occurs at a frequency of approximately 7.83 Hz, but this frequency can vary slightly from a variety of factors, such as solar-induced perturbations to the ionosphere, which comprises the upper wall of the closed cavity.[citation needed] The higher resonance modes are spaced at approximately 6.5 Hz intervals Schumann Resonance. Studies indicate the chanting of OM produces the same frequency as that of Earth, 7.83 Hz. Resonances of earth, ie, 7.83, 13.7, 19.6, 25.5, 31.4, 37.3 and 43.2 Hertz of earth. We all know 7.83 hz being the strongest of all, OM or Schumann frequency. Ohm- 7.83Hz Gam – 13.7Hz Hleem – 19.6Hz Hreem – 25.5Hz Kleem – 31.4Hz Krowm – 37.3Hz Sreem – 43.2Hz The Schumann Resonances are the result of cosmic energy build-up within the cavity that exists between Earth's highly conductive surface and the conducting layer in the upper atmosphere called the ionosphere. the space between the surface of the earth and the conductive ionosphere acts as a waveguide. The cavity is naturally excited by energy from lightning strikes. This ionospheric charge creates an electrical shield around the Earth.. The atmosphere is a dielectric insulator, which separates the two. Thus a spherical capacitor as well as a spherical resonator is created and maintained. Electrical signals of sufficient wavelength (low-frequency) are wave-guided around and around between this “sphere within a sphere” and is the base Schumann Resonance of 7.8Hz mainly traveling from West to East. 7.83 HZ or the ALPHA frequency is the gateway that leads into deeper states of consciousness. Most people are in an alpha state during the short time immediately before they fall asleep and when the conscious nervous system switches over to the subconscious. more information in the article OM Earth's Breath 7.83 Hz,Schumann Resonance --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message
This is a segment of episode 331 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Anarcha-Islām: To Struggle Against Our Inner Fascisms w/ Mohamed Abdou.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/mohamed-abdou Purchase a copy of 'Islam and Anarchism' from Bookshop or directly from Pluto Press: https://bit.ly/3CHvXHb / https://bit.ly/3CbvQ4P Dr. Mohamed Abdou joins me to discuss 'Islam and Anarchism: Relationships and Resonances,' published this year by Pluto Press. What are the relationships and resonances between anarchism and Islam? Anarchism, through its Western manifestation, claims "no gods, no masters" as fundamental to anti-authoritarianism, both in theory and practice. Through that lens, what "relationships and resonances" then exist between anarchism and a religious and spiritual system such as Islam? And, ultimately, what can self-identified anarchists in predominately non-Muslim majority Western nations, and practitioners of Islam the world-over, learn from one another? Piercing through Orientalist, Islamophobic stereotypes of the "Muslim" in the Western imaginary, even in spaces that claim to be opposed to such shallow, two-dimensional characterizations, is crucial in forging solidarities against the common enemies of liberation and social justice: heteropatriarchy, authoritarianism, fascism, capitalism, colonialism. In reading 'Islam and Anarchism,' several key truths become abundantly clear: Islam is not a monolith, and was never intended to be; Islam contains, as Dr. Abdou describes it, "micro (and macro) anti-authoritarian commitments" -- ethics of disagreement, hospitality, and community making; Islam, in practice, is incongruitous with modern nation-states — in both its liberal-democratic and dictatorial forms. With these understandings, Dr. Abdou lays critiques of the narrow frames self-described anarchists operate within, but also toward Muslims and the contradictory relationship they have with national identities within their various geographical and historical contexts. Dr. Mohamed Abdou graduated from Queen's University with a Doctorate in Cultural Studies and holds an BAH/MA in Sociology. He is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University's Einaudi Center's Racial Justice Program and is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the American University of Cairo. He is also an interdisciplinary scholar of Indigenous, Black, critical race, and Islamic studies, as well as anti-racist feminist, gender, sexuality, women, decolonial and post-colonial studies with extensive fieldwork experience in the Middle East-North Africa and Turtle Island. In his new book Islam and Anarchism: Relationships and Resonances (Pluto Press, 2022), Mohamed Abdou reimagines the parameters of political Islam and the possibilities of anarchistic interpretation of Islam and Islamic interpretation of anarchism, which is conceptualized as “Anarcha-Islam.” Rooted in the hermeneutical tradition of the Qur'an, the study draws from radical Indigenous, Black, Islamic anarchistic, and social movements discourses, as well as BIPOC and Queer thought. In outlining the commitments of anarcha-Islam, the book covers topics of non-authoritarian structures of governmentality, non-capitalist approaches to property and caretaking, and approaches to self-defensive violence. The book will be of use to scholars who think and teach on Qur'anic hermeneutics, political Islam, social movements, critical race studies, and decolonial approaches to Islam and Muslim communities. The book is also written particularly for activists on the ground involved in social movements and organizing. Shobhana Xavier is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Queen's University.
