A hardy welcome to summer birding and the return, after a break for migration, of The Big Year Podcast.  Seems silly of me to tell you the title of the show, since you must have known it when you clicked on the podcast to begin with.    Today, we have two guests.  Our first guest is Tobin Brown, who did a Nebraska Big Year, and broke the previous record for birds seen in the state for a single year.  And our second guest, Brooke Showan will tell her story of having found, through serendipity, or just really good bird spotting skills, the Whooping Crane many of us drove to northern Ontario to see, just as I was finishing up the previous episode with Roberta Bondar, where we discussed her involvement with the Conservation efforts of the Whooping Cranes in North America.   As reported in my May 1 episode, I drove north to Bruce Mines to see the wayward bird, but did not have the chance to talk to the birder who initially found it, reported it to the International Crane Foundation, and became a bit of a local celebrity for her amazing discovery, less than an hour's drive south of Dr. Bondar's home in Sault Ste. Marie.  I was able to catch up with Brooke, early in May, and I think you'll enjoy the story of her own Whooping Crane adventure.     I had a good migration season, beginning with a little cheeky movie parody of 50 Shades of Gray, called 31 Shades of Yellow, and shared some of my favourite yellowish warblers and vireos each day of May on Instagram.  But it was May 2 when we had the first highlight of migration, when a White-faced Ibis showed up in my local patch, right here in Brant County.  It was species number 245 for my county list and a bird I never expected to show up locally.  It was the second Brant County Lifer of the year, the first being a Ross's Goose in March.   On May 7, I was fortunate enough to see a Bell's Vireo, another very rare bird for Ontario, not far from home at Lakeside Park in Kitchener.  A couple of days later a Western Cattle Egret showed up in Norfolk County, not far from the Long Point Bird Observatory, another fine place for birding during migration season.  That same day the first of many Summer Tanagers reported in May, landed on Woodstock Avenue just around the corner from Long Point.   At Point Pelee one of the most coveted warblers of spring migration, a Worm Eating Warbler, made an appearance on the Sanctuary Trail at the north end of the park.  Worm Eating Warblers are never guaranteed during any given migration season in Ontario, and in fact I missed seeing one during my own 2022 Big Year.  Worm Eating Warblers nest south of the Great Lakes and any seen in Ontario are what birders call “overshoots,” likely due to weather or just plain old navigation errors.    What one might call the most unexpected bird of the season, was a Willow Ptarmigan that showed up at Rock Point Provincial Park. Too bad it, it being seen at Rock Point, that it wasn't a Rock Ptarmigan, as I've never seen one of those. But for many of the people at Rock Point that day, it was either a Lifer or at least an Ontario Lifer.  For my friend, Andrew Keaveny, who has been on a previous episode, it was an Ontario Lifer.  He had been birding nearly all his life, had seen well over 400 species in Ontario, but was as excited for this bird as he was for the Whooping Crane.  And by the way, if you haven't listened to Andrew's episode, please load it up after this and have a listen.  Oh, and it would help a lot if you'd like, subscribe, leave glowing reviews and share this with your friends and family.     So, now that we're all up to date, please have a listen to the stories of Tobin Brown and Brooke Showan.   Here's a bonus section for you to enjoy. I enjoy listening to the music from the movie, The Big Year.  The soundtrack album is nice, but does not include all the songs that we heard in the movie.  I was able to put together a playlist, including all the orchestral pieces from the movie, by Theodore Shapiro and all the songs that I could download from Apple Music.  I even tried to put them in order of when they appeared in the movie, more or less.   Track 1:   The Code Writer Track 2:   Minor Swing performed by Django Reinhardt Track 3:   Carpe Annum Track 4:   Day One Track 5:   The Devil Never sleeps performed by Iron & Wine Track 6:   Bostick Sneaks a Peek/Bird Bait Track 7:   Fallout Track 8:   Let it Shine performed by Jeremy Fisher Track 9:   Pitkin County Turnaround performed by Steve Martin himself on banjo Track 10: The Shrike Track 11: Welcome to Attu Track 12: Rustic Bunting/Western Tanager Track 13: Viva la Vida performed by Cold Play Track 14: Attu/The Great Spotted Woodpecker Track 15: Come Fly Away performed by Jeremy Fisher Track 16: I like Birds by performed by the Eels Track 17: Snowcocks Track 18: Golden Plover/Ruby Alive/Freak Blizzard Track 19: Ultrasound Track 20: Great Gray Owl Track 21: Final Stretch Track 22: Face the Abyss Track 23: A Very Big Year Track 24: Coda Track 25: This Could All Be Yours performed by Guster Track 26: Ornithological Pursuits (Played over the final credits).   There are some incidental tracks throughout the movies that play mostly in the background, but are not a major part of the story, like Bing Crosby's Silent Night or Auld Lang Syne performed by Guy Lombardo, plus some more obscure tracks that only an audiophile would be able to dig up.  You may also want to include Surfin' Bird performed by The Trashmen.

The year was 1969.  I was a month shy of my ninth birthday.  It was way past my bedtime, though it was only 10pm.  In my memory of the event, it was the middle of the night.  Along with my family, gathered around the black-and-white television in my parent's bedroom, we watched the broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing.  At 10:56pm EDT time we witnessed, along with the rest of the world, a grainy, gray-scale image of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the lunar surface and say, “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”  Neil left out a single syllable,  word, “a”.  He had meant to say “That's one small step for A man.” That man being him.  Still, it didn't matter to anyone watching or listening at the time.  The universe had changed.  Humans from earth had stepped foot onto another world.   Thousands of kids at the time wanted to become astronauts and join the space program. I wasn't one of them. Yes, I loved all things space, watched Star Trek, and followed every NASA launch.  I remember Skylab and Mir, the Space Shuttle and Hubble.  I geek out on videos from the International Space Station and have followed the Artemis program for years, finally seeing Artemis II launch, orbit the moon and splash down safely this April, nearly 55 years after Apollo 17, splashed down in December of 1972, ending human missions to the moon for over half a century.   My life took a different path in 1969, having watched the Miracle Mets win the World Series and see them celebrate on the field, on that same black-and-white television in my parents bedroom, a couple of months later.  I chose to pursue a life that would eventually get me on the field at some nebulous future date, when a team I was involved with won a World Series.  I made it to that dreamed of future from my childhood in October of 1992, as I ran onto the field when the Toronto Blue Jays won their first World Series.  Today's guest, on the other hand, did everything in her power to become an astronaut and earlier that same year, flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery, mission STS-42, as the first neurologist and Canadian woman in space.  I even crossed paths with Roberta Bondar when she threw out the first pitch at a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game, soon after her shuttle flight. Two people from very different walks of life, with two very different goals, take different paths and end up in the same place all those years later.  But it didn't end there.  In 2022, when I was up in Sault Ste. Marie, I discovered that Dr. Bondar was born there and they had celebrated her shuttle mission with a flower garden built into a scale model of the Space Shuttle Discovery.  The following year I heard she was giving a talk about her new book, "A Space for Birds", and I knew I had to go.  This time it was two birds, not Blue Jays, that brought us back into the same space.  After the talk, I spoke to her agent and we made arrangements for this very podcast. I've come a long way from that kid who loved space but wanted to live a childhood dream of winning a World Series, and Dr. Bondar has travelled to exactly where she wanted to be.  To fly in space.  Each of us, in different ways, didn't just wish and hope for these things to happen. We focused our lives and energies toward our goals.  My mother used to say, “if wishes were horses, we would all ride.”  That was an important lesson to learn as a kid.  Don't wish, do.  In an era when young people think that “manifesting” a dream will just make it happen, the people who are successful at achieving their goals, like Dr. Bondar, put in the hard work.  Me, I just got lucky. Stop the presses!  In a wonderful bit of serendipity, just days before this episode was due to air, with Dr. Bondar on the podcast to talk about Whooping Cranes, an actual Whooping Crane showed up in Northern Ontario.  The next morning I hopped in the car and drove 6 hours north to the small town of Bruce Mines, and along with a who's-who of Ontario birders, waited until sunset to see this intrepid young female.  She was born of wild parents at the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin. After being released, Sinclair,(yes they get names and band codes), she joined a group of adults who migrated to Florida for the winter.  Her spring migration home to Wisconsin went slightly of course and she has joined a flock of Sandhill Cranes in Northern Ontario.  I was lucky enough to share the experience with many of my birding friends who also made the trek to see this intrepid traveller, who will hopefully contribute to the future of this endangered species.    So join me, along with Doctor Roberta Bondar, as I live my life long dream to talk to a real, live astronaut about space, birds and A Space for Birds.         Extro.

Earthquakes create a spark in quartz that can form massive gold nuggetsScientists have figured out why up to 75 per cent of all the gold ever mined forms inside quartz in areas with a long history of earthquakes. Chris Voisey, a Canadian geologist at Monash University in Australia, said he was trying to solve how gold arose inside quartz. In his study in the journal Nature Geoscience, he found that earthquake stress on quartz crystals generates an electrical voltage that causes dissolved gold to precipitate into a solid that can grow into the largest nuggets ever found.Ice Age Teens went through puberty just like today's kidsA new analysis of the bones of teenagers from 25,000 years ago shows they experienced puberty in much the same way as teens today. An international team of researchers including Paleolithic archaeologist April Nowell analyzed the bones of 13 teens found across Europe, and by looking at particular markers in the bones, they were able to see which stage of puberty the teens were in when they died. The researchers could not only infer things like whether their voices were breaking, but by doing muscle analysis, they found that the teens were healthy and active, and likely involved in hunting and fishing. The research was published in the Journal of Human Evolution.Grey sharks are abandoning warming coral reefs in the Indian OceanThe grey shark in the Indian Ocean uses beautiful coral reefs as a home base, returning each day after a night of fishing. But lately the sharks have been staying away for longer periods of time, up to 16 months. Dr. Michael Willamson, a research scientist at the Zoological Society of London, found that climate change is stressing the reefs. The sharks seek out cooler but potentially more dangerous waters. Venturing away from the protected reef area leaves them more vulnerable to illegal shark fishing. The paper was published in the journal Communications BiologyA cosmic collision 9 billion years ago could be the origin of he supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy Using data from The Event Horizon Telescope, Dr. Yihan Wang worked with Dr. Bing Zhang at the Nevada Institute of Astrophysics to study the origins of the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. From the EHT image of the Sagittarius A* Dr. Wang and his team made an accretion model and saw that it spins very fast and that the spinning is misaligned. They believe it may have been made by merging with another supermassive black hole. about 9 billion years ago. Their paper was published in Nature Astronomy.Astronaut Roberta Bondar gives a bird's eye view of migration 32 years after she flew on the space shuttle, Roberta Bondar is still showing us what the Earth looks like from space — and from closer to the ground. Dr. Bondar trained as a wildlife photographer after her astronaut career. For a new project collected photos from space, from airplanes and helicopters, and from the ground, to bring a new perspective on the migration of two important bird species, the threatened lesser Flamingo and the endangered Whooping Crane. The book is called Space for Birds: Patterns and Parallels of Beauty and Flight.

From studying to be a neurosurgeon to testing the first commercial spacesuit in zero gravity, Dr. Pandya shares with Dr. Laura how she navigates her extraordinary life.“...so realizing the end is not guaranteed, but the journey is so incredible. Like if you told me as a kid I would get to be part of Mars simulations and get to command these missions and get to live under the sea and do really cool science as part of this and do really cool technology development, and even work with some of these companies like I do with Sonic or advise some of these companies, you know, that's a pretty cool dream to realize as an adult! And so the journey is just as important as that end goal.”  Dr. Shawna PandyaAbout Dr. Shawna Pandya, BSc (Hons), MSc, MD, CFPC, DMT, FAWM (candidate), FEWM (honorary):Dr. Shawna Pandya is a physician, aquanaut, scientist-astronaut candidate with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), skydiver, pilot-in-training, VP Immersive Medicine with Luxsonic Technologies, Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medicine Association, and Fellow of the Explorers Club. Dr. Pandya was on the first crew to test a commercial spacesuit in zero-gravity in 2015. She earned her aquanaut designation on the 2019 NEPTUNE (Nautical Experiments in Physiology, Technology and Underwater Exploration) mission. When Kirat Assi met a man named Bobby online, her life changed forever. Their long-distance love story was a slow burn, lasting for ten years. They texted and called every day, sharing dreams of starting a life together. In all that time Kirat and Bobby never met in person. Kirat then learned that Bobby wasn't real – and she was the victim of an elaborate catfishing scam. If that setup has you hooked, you'll understand why so many people are obsessed with the podcast Sweet Bobby. This week Leah welcomes the host, investigative journalist Alexi Mostrous, for a spoiler-free interview you won't want to miss. Leah also talks to the creator of a new CBC podcast all about exploring grief and memory. Alex McKinnon's brother Paul was killed thirty years ago by a speeding police car, at only fourteen years old. As time went on, Alex's memories of Paul became hazy and then went away. In his podcast Sorry About the Kid, he explores his childhood grief and tries to get those memories back. Featuring: Sweet Bobby, Sorry About The Kid, Sharing Space with Dr. Roberta Bondar

As a Toronto schoolgirl, Jill was fascinated by the Apollo program and wanted to be an astronaut. However, Canada did not have a space program, and it wouldn’t be until 1992 that Dr. Roberta Bondar became the first Canadian woman in outer space. Instead, Jill navigated a path to inner space and is recognized as one of the world’s most prolific underwater explorers. Jill’s expeditions include exploring and mapping some of the world’s longest submerged caves, documenting ancient Mayan remains along the way. In Florida, Jill was a lead technical diver on the ground-breaking Wakulla2 project, where she piloted the first 3D underwater cave mapping device - technology that will be bound for Jupiter’s moon Europa. When the largest moving object on the planet, the B-15 iceberg, calved from Antarctica, Jill led a dive team into the labyrinth of frozen underwater caves beneath the massive iceberg’s surface, discovering a diverse, colorful ecosystem of life in one of the harshest environments on earth. A pioneer of technical rebreather diving, Jill has made extreme conditions her specialty. Her ongoing expeditions to document the changing climate of the Arctic resulted in Jill being awarded the prestigious Canadian Polar Medal. From the desert oases of the Sahara to the cold waters of Baffin Bay, Jill Heinerth continues to explore what lies beneath the surface, sharing images of places where no person has gone before. Through collaboration, she becomes the hands and eyes for climatologists, archaeologists, and engineers, extending their reach into the depths. In her role as the first Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Jill visits schools and universities, sharing her love of exploration and science. She is a frequent online educator, leveraging technology to inspire classrooms full of eager young people from Anchorage, Alaska, to Mumbai, India. Jill is a presenter on radio and TV broadcasts, including PBS, the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, the CBC, and networks from Japan to Australia. Over two million people have learned about climate change, water advocacy, and exploration by viewing Jill’s passionate and motivational TED Talks. A gifted storyteller, Jill is an associate editor and columnist for Diver Magazine, and a contributor to publications as diverse as Canadian Geographic and the Los Angeles Times. Her recent book, “INTO THE PLANET - My Life as a Cave Diver” was published in late 2019 by Harper-Collins in the United States and Penguin-Random House in Canada. Jill’s accolades include induction into the inaugural class of the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame, first presentation of the Sir Christopher Ondaatje medal for exploration, and the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences “NOGI” award. Jill has recently been named a member of the 2020 class of the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame and receives the William Beebe Award from the Explorer's Club in March 2020. Jill Heinerth is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the National Speleological Society, and the Explorer’s Club.

Dr. Roberta Bondar remembers the moment she became the first Canadian female astronaut to go to space on board the space shuttle Discovery in 1992. “It certainly wasn’t a very comfortable ride,” she recalls. “Nobody told me that the last 45 seconds [during take-off] you can’t breathe. I just said to myself, this is so far away from Star Trek and Flash Gordon. This is like the most rudimentary tin can possible. It’s like being inside a roman candle.” Upon entering Earth’s orbit, Bondar also became the very first neurologist in space. Her studies on the impact of space travel on the human body have made her one of the world’s leading experts in that field. As speculation ramps up about how soon humans could visit Mars, Bondar says the obstacles to sending astronauts on such a long space journey aren’t insurmountable, but adds that she thinks that we should first focus on building a moon base.
