The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"With the right training, nutrition, lifestyle strategies, and the power of the mind, women in their fifties and beyond can still [accomplish amazing feats] . . . women prove every day that our best years can be ahead of us no matter how old we are now . . . you've accumulated hard-earned wisdom and power over the years. You're higher on the totem pole of life. There are countless opportunities that lie ahead." —Dr. Stacy Sims, phD, International exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist The beautiful gift of stepping into another year of life is that we have the opportunity, but not the promise, to enjoy the application of wisdom learned along the way. As someone who lives with awareness and pays attention to the reality of life, we know that our bodies need to be taken care of properly so that they can take care of us. Knowing how our bodies change as we age is crucial to knowing how to give it the care it needs for optimal quality of living. Which brings me to a reality that Dr. Stacy T. Sims, an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, pointed out in a recent interview on The Mel Robbins podcast (listen here), the majority, and arguably supermajority of all fitness studies and how the body responds to exercise for weight loss and strength building has been done with men as their test subjects, and the few studies that did involve women, were women who were pre-menopausal age. In fact, she points out in her latest book Next Level: Your Guide to Kicking Ass, Feeling Great, and Crushing Goals Through Menopause that in a 2019 study published by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings "found that of 177 resident physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, and even obstetrics/gynecology who were surveyed, 20 percent received zero lectures on menopause during their training. Fewer than 7 percent reported feeling prepared to help manage the care of women through their menopausal years." However, thankfully, awareness and discussion and knowledge are being more readily shared thanks to many high profile individuals - Michelle Obama, Oprah, Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, Katie Couric, Maria Shriver and more. What is most important is understanding what we can do and how it will benefit us not only in the short-term but in the long-term. And as someone who has been active all of my life, and now am at the age of 46, I began to realize I need to learn more about what I can do to keep my body strong, reduce the symptoms and continue to enjoy working out while seeing results. That is why I was thrilled to be introduced to Dr. Stacy Sims, and I have a long-time TSLL reader and member to thank for this - Janet M. Janet sent me the link to the Mel Robbin's podcast episode with Dr. Stacy Sims that essentially just blasts so many myths out of the water about how to eat, workout and think about what we do to ourselves as women as we step into the perimenopausal and then postmenopausal period of our life, which is the rest of our life - we think we need to eat less and work out more and the exact opposite is true. I cannot tell you how refreshing, validating and inspiring that episode was, so I encourage you to listen to it so you can meet Dr. Stacy Sims and get an introduction to what we're going to talk about today and why I highly recommend picking up her latest book Next Level. With all of that said, I have simultaneously been reading a book about how to strengthen our memory to do all that we can, whatever our age, to prevent dementia and Alzheimer's, and what I discovered, which will not likely surprise you, is that so much of what we can do for our physical health that will also benefit our brain health and strong memory. So today's episode is the episode that will share with you 17 specific life habits, practices and approaches to keep both your body and mind healthy for the rest of our lives, specifically dedicated to women as we move through perimenopause, then menopause (which is essentially one day), and the postmenopause which will be for the rest of our lives. Why not discover how to thrive and enjoy this awesome time of our lives because as a favorite quote of my shares, "The climax of the story always occurs in the second act. It's the best part." as written for the dramatized show Julia about Julia Child. The other reason I wanted to bring this episode to you is because the more we talk about and celebrate and model how to live amazingly through this inevitable change, we destigmatize what has been for centuries seen as a negative along the journey of womanhood. No longer! And that can only change with women - the words we use, how we talk about it, how we live, etc. The mindset we bring, the attitude, the wisdom, the support, it will all make a powerful difference that not only will help each of us, but those around us and those who will arrive into the latter half of their life after us undaunted and eager to do so because of the women who came before who refused to be seen as less-than or a incapable of achieving amazing things. ~Find the Show Notes on The Simply Luxurious Life blog — https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast402

Mel Robbin's book The Let Them Theory is quite popular right now. But did you know it's based on a poem by Cassie Phillips called "Just Let Them"? This poem gives us the power and understanding of what it means to release control over trying to control other people and instead comprehend our own worthiness that is never in the hands of others.

Happy Throwback Thursday, Heal Squad! We're bringing back an episode that dives deep into the power of self-compassion and embracing our mistakes. Maria and Kelsey share their insights from a previous episode with Mel Robbins, where she breaks down her transformative “High Five Habit”—a simple practice of high-fiving yourself in the mirror every morning. This habit is more than a gesture; it's an act of self-love and acceptance that flips self-criticism on its head. In her book, Mel shares how this daily ritual can reshape your perspective and serve as a powerful anchor when life's storms hit. We talk about releasing guilt, letting go of self-doubt, and moving forward without the heavy weight of self-judgment. Maria even shares a recent experience where this habit helped her turn a minor car mishap into a moment of kindness rather than self-blame. Mel Robbins Interview on Heal Squad Healers and Heal Liners: Gratitude as a Compass. Mel and Maria explore how practicing gratitude isn't just positive thinking; it's a grounding practice that strengthens resilience. Celebrate Yourself. From sticky notes to mirror moments, discover practical ways to make self-love part of your routine. Unblocking Mental Lint. It clogs your mind and keeps you from celebrating you. Our daily thoughts and experiences can clog our mental space and how the High Five Habit can help clear the path for a more positive mindset. Brad Crowell 0:01 Fuck yeah. Lesley Logan 0:02 Get ready for some wins. Lesley Logan 0:05 Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:46 Hey, Be It babe. Happy Friday, Happy FYF, happy day to celebrate some wins. Thank you for being here. Thank you for letting us give you some inspiration of what some wins are. And I'm hoping that these are helpful for you to see all the different things that can become a win in your day. Right? So if you're new to the Be It Pod, welcome. We do interviews on Tuesday, recaps on Thursday, answer your question on Thursday and also on Friday we celebrate your wins you send them in we read yours we read one of mine and then we have a little mantra at the end. Lesley Logan 1:13 So this one is from Djamila. She's an Agency member and she says, "I haven't posted in a while so here are a few things I've accomplished and ticked off my endless tada not to-do list." Ready for this guys? Here we go. Set prices for our Pilates classes high because I'm worth it. Set up Acuity and have first client booked with stripe payment working, too. Ordered mirror for the studio. Taught my first two (inaudible) teenagers, they are 15. Email the women's health clinic to present my services and offered a partnership. Becoming known donated 30 coupons for winners at upcoming local (inaudible) event. Got five people to sign up for the menopause and nutrition workshop I'm hosting. I'm totally into researching this topic of personal interest at the moment. Let myself cry and have a do-nothing-and-eat-carbs day because everything is so overwhelming. Everything is f* overwhelming. Stayed on top of my German class and homework. Planted some kale spinach in the garden. Got three weightlifting sessions in this week. Organized my daughter's birthday party. Wrote a script for videos I'll be filming in a week. Briefly marketed agency for an offer. Converted four clients who bought a discounted membership at via an online campaign to buy annual memberships. Listened to Mel Robbin's book, The Five Second Rule and I'm using it. I wrote to an old friend who's a lawyer and she's helping me convert my T and C and waiver, etcetera, into Swiss law. Djamila, thank you for like literally like putting all of these down on paper. I think so many of us wait to celebrate our wins until they're all at once. And then we're like, oh, should I still have all of them? It's like yeah, you should and I really do love you called it tada list. And it is an endless tada list. And so, same, I think we all need tada lists everywhere we go. So Djamila, thank you so much. You're doing incredible work. I know it's a lot. You're doing all on your own and you have recently moved and it's just a lot so you're kicking ass. I love it. Lesley Logan 3:02 I have one more from another Agency member, by the way, Agency is our coaching company we have an agency on demand so you can get office hours with us and on-demand stuff and so these are these wins coming from a lot of these members. Christine Eschen, oh my God it's not even FYF yet but I have to share. Had a newbie gone for two months. I just used a Phil Jones what-to-say format in a text. She responded a few minutes and bought a 10-pack and tipped me $160 and committed to two times a week. Abundance. Thank you Agency, LL, and Brad, this is for the Be It Pod. Yes, it is. Oh my God, Christine, way to go. I love, you guys, if you don't know what she meant by Phil Jones, there is a book about like selling from Phil Jones and a lot of our Agency members have been using it to help them with how to follow up with clients, how to check back in. And so way to go, Christine, for doing that. You are amazing. Lesley Logan 3:58 All right, a win of mine. We took another weekend off. You guys, we didn't need to, we could have, because we're trying to stay home, and we did. But like we really did take this long holiday weekend off because the holiday was in the middle of the week. And we spent some time with some friends. And then the two of us just like staycationed a bit, it was just really, really important that we did that. And I think, like, if you don't realize it, taking a weekend off and doing just stuff like life is a win, then you really have to reset and reframe what's going on in your life because being an adult is a lot of work. And it is easy to just do one more thing on the email or just check one more thing or get down on yourself or not do anything at all, you know, it is a win. It is a win to get bored. It is a win to take time for yourself. Also, another win is that I'm about three to four weeks in this like a pseudo elimination process. So I'm not doing a full elimination diet because that's not necessary. But as you know, I'm working with a company called FemGevity and I do hope that you use my free consult call if you if what I'm doing with them interests you. And they told me some of the stuff I'm sensitive to and I've been wondering why I'm so bloated all the time. And I start off the day not. And so I've obviously it's something that's going on my gut. And I have information about that coming up, I'll share with you later. But at any rate, I was having oat milk every day, should not be having that. There's different fruits that I'm very sensitive to. There is different (inaudible), it doesn't mean that I can't ever have them because these are not true, true allergies, but there's sensitivities and I need to go off of them for six to eight weeks and then try to introduce them. And it is just very interesting to find new ways to have your coffee. So I have been asking for help, which is another win. So several wins for this week. And I'm really proud of myself. And by the way, asking for help is a win. So pat yourself on the back because you're an overachiever if you're listening to this podcast, I know you. Hi. Hello, I see you. Anyways, you guys, thank you so much. Let me give you a mantra for your weekend or today because you don't have to remember all three days it's a lot to ask. So here it is. Letting go create space for opportunities to come. Letting go create space for opportunities to come. Letting go create space for opportunities to come. What can you let go have to create some space? Have an amazing day and until next time, Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 6:19 That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. Today we talk through the Hero's Journey following four stages and how this can be applied to our life, past and present. We like this framework as it helps us put challenging times into the context of the big picture, and also see when we're stuck or trying to push a gut feeling down with numbing behaviour. We discuss the narrative self, doing things for the story, like the story of what we want our life to look like in our 30s and how it's linked to the hero's journey. Carly talks about main character energy and Matthew talks about how he likes the dynamic where Carly pushes us to do more things as a family and Matthew help make it happen. We get into the details of challenges around starting a podcast and what the actual stats have been in our first month. If you're on the fence maybe this podcast is for you just to remind you, it will be challenging but you can do it! Carly was stuck being the reluctant hero and just not starting for almost a year. Whether it's moving to a new county, quitting drinking, starting that podcast or something smaller like starting a workout program, cold plunging, journalling or waking up earlier - the hero's journey is a great framework to use.We were inspired by Mel Robbin's latest podcast episode to talk about this topic - thanks Mel Robbins!00:00 What is the Hero's Journey02:05 Stage 1: The Call to Adventure 06:33 Narrative Self vs. Experiential Self10:08 Main Character Energy 14:52 Stage 2: You're the Reluctant Hero 20:12 Stage 3: Cross the Threshold 25:11 Stage 4: The Midpoint & Challenges 28:14 Stage 5: The Journey Continues 33:54 Changes we're making Support the Show. Welcome back to the Broken to Beautiful podcast! Whether it's your first time tuning in or you're a returning listener, I'm thrilled to have you here with me. Today, we're diving into a topic that many of us struggle with: the dreaded snooze button. Do you find it challenging to get out of bed in the morning? Lately, I've been facing similar struggles due to personal circumstances, and I know many of you can relate. But fear not! Today, I have a powerful solution to share with you. Before we delve into that, let's reflect on our Verse of the Week: "Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding." (Proverbs 15:32) If you're here, you're seeking understanding and improvement, and I commend you for that. Enter the 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. This simple yet effective technique can revolutionize your mornings and beyond. Mel discovered this rule during a period of immense stress in her life, and her journey resonates deeply with many of us who have felt trapped by circumstances. PEOPLE WON'T CHANGE Whoa. Wait a minute. What are you talking about?! You think everything is your fault. They are VERY reactive with feedback- ANY kind. They don't like being told what to do (and we aren't talking about your children). They hijack conversations. Make it about themselves. Constantly put people down to bring themselves up. They minimalize your feelings (hello gaslighting). There's no flexibility- either they don't have any or it doesn't matter to them. This personality is self-serving. How do we deal with this person and protect ourselves? Listen to today's episode to know the warning signs of this personality style, the core and reasons behind it, how to deal with them, even if it gets REALLY uncomfortable. Thanks to Mel Robbin's October 2022 episode of the "The Mel Robbins Podcast" for inspiring me to talk about this personality. That is unfortunately in my life in a few different areas. I now know how to handle these people and that it's OK if I don't react to them. I'm not weak because of it. I am strong because I know that the less I say, the better. I will not be the bait. I will stop the conversation. Thank you for listening, sharing, interacting and rating the podcast. I appreciate you so much! What's really going to change on January 1, 2021? The hype around the fresh start of a new year can have the side effect of letting us wait to take action until the calendar turns over – we think there's a better way. If you're looking for a better outcome in any domain in your life, don't wait for an outside marker of a new start (new year, birthday, new semester). We suggest you start with small steps, now. Sometimes we act our way into new ways of thinking, rather than waiting until our beliefs or thinking is different. Sometimes the “just do it” advice makes sense! There are lot of popular messages about gathering just a few moments of energy or courage to propel us into action (the movies We are the Millers, We Bought A Zoo and Mel Robbin's work offer a few variations on the theme) – our experience is that sometimes this idea works as an alternative to over-thinking or over-planning. Aligning your action – even small actions – with purpose and focus offers an antidote to thoughtless and frenzied action, making sure you're working on something that matters to you and is likely to bring you closer to your goals. And the key word is ‘closer'. We also talk through how to combat the instinct to ‘get it right' by considering learning rather than perfect outcomes, knowing that even our imperfect actions can serve as practice rounds to get better at whatever we're trying to take on. Finally, we offer the ideas of declaring your intentions out loud as a form of instant energy, and doing the post-action debrief to sort out how things went, and what could come next. Starting now has the wonderful effect of building momentum in the areas of our life where we want to create change. As the great Dolly Parton says: Energy begets energy. And that's just beautiful, healthy, we are loving ourselves, we are protecting ourselves. But in so doing, we are cutting ourselves off from our own intuition, our instincts. Were cutting ourselves off from the flow of life” (2:24) “Life is not about doing it right, looking good and being happy all the time! Life is about experience. And whether it is through the path of pain, or through the path of bliss, if we keep our heart open, if we open in vulnerability, we return to the same place, love.” (5:22) “Of course we have a preference, of course, we’d like to get the job or like the date to go well. But we don't need it to go well in order to be good enough because we have already done all that inner work inside.” (11:47) “We all are the same dark and light. We are all everything. So that essence is within you. Say thank you, sister! And go home, put on a song, and start to dance, let that awaken within you. (25:42) “You don't need to accomplish more in order to rest into your worth. Be willing to take those two or three steps inward to really process all the crap you have been through into these beautiful gems, that within you will awaken your true genius, your true essence, your authenticity.” (31:33) Links 7 Part Complimentary Training Allana’s Website Follow Allana’s YouTube Channel Allana Pratt Podcast The 5 Second Rule - Mel Robbins Check out the full show notes for this episode Women Hacking Betrayal Facebook Group Have you taken the Post-Betrayal Quiz yet? A couple of weeks ago I put out a podcast entitled “Fear vs. Courage.” I think we mainly think of displays of courage in large circumstances, not our daily life. Last week I began reading Mel Robbin’s “5 Second Rule” and one chapter talked about those small instances, each day, we all display courage. I don’t believe we give ourselves enough credit for how much courage we all have in us. Each day, everyone of us, in some fashion, mostly in small instances, display courage that impacts us, and others, far into the future. Today’s episode we share some of those thoughts. “Courage is forged in pain. Pain that is denied or ignored becomes fear or hate” – Brene’ Brown
