In this week's Mom Stomp episode (S4, Ep7), Annie and Jo talk about Jo's experience attending “El Dorado Ballroom - Glory to Glory” at the Walt Disney Concert Hall - a night curated by Solange Knowles for Saint Heron. Also, we got some Rihanna links from first name/last name (FNLN) MJ Price and a VM from FNLN Tim Paul, who gives us permission to turn his life into a true crime podcast if he goes missing in Europe. Best wishes to our friend in Europe but, lord, could you imagine our podcast with actual direction!?

In this episode, I talk to Myesha Evon Gardner, a New York-based photographer and art director originally from Cleveland, Ohio. We cover topics such as Myesha's approach to photography, including influences, gear, experimentation, shooting analog and working in the darkroom, her mindsets about growth and finances, lessons she learned from her father, who is a musician, the importance of patience and passion, risk-taking, her most essential rituals, and much more.BiographyMyesha Evon Gardner is a New York-based photographer and art director originally from Cleveland, Ohio. She holds a BFA degree in photography and graphic design from the Parsons School of Design in New York City.As a photographer and storyteller, Myesha examines truth by documenting and redefining themes of legacy, labor, the perception of beauty, and familial love in underrepresented communities. Through the subjects of vanity, body image, and self-care, she studies the profoundly complex role of the Black woman, who, she observes, as people and individuals, are often stripped down to singular value. Gardner investigates the socioeconomic structure and negotiation of power between these visual embodiments and what it means to exist in and move up into the ranks of American society. Her commercial work is inspired by the materiality of cultural influences as expressed through music, history, sports, and fashion. Myesha's clients include Nike, Jordan, Beats by Dre, Nordstrom, Beyoncé, Parkwood Entertainment, Saint Heron, HBO, RCA Records, Sony Music, The New Yorker, and The New York Times, to name a few.Over the years, she participated in several group exhibitions, and her work has been published in publications such as HYPEBAE, WIRED, Cosmopolitan, The Brooklyn Circus, Vouge, V Man and TIME.Selected Links From the EpisodeMyesha's WebsiteMyesha's InstagramGordon ParksHelmut NewtonIrving PennDarkroomJamaica, Montego BayAlbumen PrintSusan MeiselasPrince Street Girls by Susan MeiselasMagnum PhotographersA Choice of Weapons by Gordon ParksLife MagazineHand-Printing (Photographic Process)Pinhole CameraMedium FormatPhotogravureShow NotesIntroduction [00:00:00]The Mindful Creative Year [00:01:02]Episode Introduction [00:05:06]On Becoming a Creative Professional [00:07:26]Advice for Young Creatives [00:21:05]Work Routines of a Professional Freelance Photographer [00:30:05]Short Episode Break – Support the Podcast [00:45:43]Financial Mindsets for Creative Professionals [00:46:25]Importance of Personal and Professional Growth [00:49:53]Myesha's Approach to Photography and Direction [01:01:13]Challenges on Myesha's Creative Journey [01:21:11]How to Be a Better Creative Professional [01:26:35]Episode Outro [01:30:13]Full transcript and more at https://creative.voyage/

Phillip Youmans is a filmmaker from the 7th Ward of New Orleans. He is this years Tribeca Film Festival winner for his feature film Burning Cane. Phillip was also rewarded for his cinematography picking up the Best Cinematography award. Remarkably he is only 19 years old meaning he wrote, shot and edited the film while in high school. As of this month Phillip just finished his first semester at NYU Film School making him the youngest director to have an official selection at Tribeca and also the youngest winner. Indiewire proclaimed Burning Cane to be the most exciting black film of 2019 so far. In his childhood, Phillip was first introduced to filmmaking as an actor, taking small roles in productions around New Orleans. This early exposure to working on sets ignited Phillip's desire to pursue the medium from behind the camera. Before high school, Phillip began writing, directing, shooting, and editing his own short films. During his high school years at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Phillip solidified his technical foundation of filmmaking in their media arts program. In his junior year, Phillip began work on his first feature film Burning Cane. Burning Cane, starring Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Jack Ryan, Tréme, Suits, Clemency) and executive produced by Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), speaks on the rigid religious convictions that govern the black community in the rural south and the cyclical nature of destructive behavior. His most recent video installation titled Won't You Celebrate With Me premiered with Solange Knowles' creative agency Saint Heron at the end of his senior year of high school; the instillation is showcase of black female unity in an alternative future. His latest short film Nairobi, also made with Saint Heron, is about a Harlem-based family of francophone West-African immigrants. Nairobi will premiere on their platform in the Spring of 2019. Furthermore, Phillip is in post-production for his documentary about the Grammy-nominated jazz musician Jon Batiste titled The Vanguard: Days with Jon Batiste. Set release in late 2019 in tandem with Batiste's latest album, the film follows Batiste and the Stay Human Band from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to their six night run at the legendary Village Vanguard.

This month, we kick off the new year with an exploration of language in our feature, “Way With Words”. How do we preserve our most endangered languages? How does a dialect become a language? Do labels like “Womxn”, “LGBTQIA”, “people of color” and “Latinx” empower or hold people back? What happens when a command of written and verbal language no longer separates robots from humans? We’ll dig into these questions and more with Animesh Garg, Robotics research scientist at Stanford; Dr. Helen Beer, Yiddish teacher at University College London; Genesee Johnson, professor at Harvard; Mel Y Chen, Associate Professor of Gender & Women's Studies at UC Berkeley, and writer, Yara Rodrigues Fowler. We also speak with Armina Mussa, visual artist and creative director of Saint Heron - a multidisciplinary creative agency founded in 2013 by Solange Knowles. Armina shares how a life-changing incident has helped her find her voice in her art. Lastly, we revisit our MIND series exploring links between design and mental health in urban spaces. How is the creative community in London responding to the pressures of city life? Stance is an Award-Winning Arts, Culture & Current Affairs Podcast, Exploring Diverse, Global Perspectives. A bit on Lady Watts: As NYC’s biggest fan in the form of the coolest black girl alive, Stephanye’s quest to discover everything dope, cheap, and black+ excellent below 14th Street and around the world is chronicled on her travel site iso14below.com. TAKE THE L HANNAH! * Chris Brown attempted to endear himself to blacks once more by having his own #BlackLivesMatter moment in a Calabasas looking town. Chile. I guess. * Kaepernick HAS THE RANGE because we're talking about him. Again. He can't stop won't stop. At least off the field. * MTV VMAs entertained. * Rihanna is trying to convince herself Drake is the one for her. * Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert and their baby girl Iman Shumpert Jr. is what the Three Wise Jawns aspire to. Teach us Teyana! * Tyga and Migos were signed to G.O.O.D. music. The latter is the only thing good about that news. * Yeezy Season 4 happened during NYFW and per Ye usual caused some controversy. #MultiRacial * Donald Glover's Atlanta premiered on FX and we squealed. Steph spent the last 3 weeks in LA and while there attended Glover's Pharos festival at Joshua Tree. We recorded on Sunday, September 11, 2016 so take a moment to appreciate your blessings. #NeverForget
