While visiting Mountain Creek Bike Park in New Jersey, for a Vital Enduro Fork Test Session project, I caught up with local legend, George Ryan. I met George in person about 20 years ago, but knew of him before that because of his online persona in old-timey forums and his presence in videos like the Chain Reaction series. Over the years we'd see each other at events or on photo shoots, so it was a massive pleasure to sit down with him and hear his full story. To my surprise, he's a big-time MTB keepsake collector and he showed up with old jerseys, DVDs, magazines and even a Shaun Palmer baseball card. We discuss his journey into mountain biking, turning pro and eventually becoming the main man in charge of trails at Mountain Creek. Shaun Palmer defeated alcohol when the odds were stacked against him. Alcohol provided the anaesthetic he was looking for at a young age to numb and escape from the trauma of growing up with domestic violence and a father with a sever alcoholic use disorder in the family home. He quickly moved out and immersed himself in his new career in the hospitality industry and then later in the fly-in-fly-out mining industry where he found drinking was entrenched and revered. Following a family tragedy, Shaun miraculously turned his life around. His sheer focus and dedication to becoming sober is compelling. Shaun's story may have started with heartbreak, but it now certainly speaks of revival and joy of the life he has created. He provides direct insight into a male's experience of transforming from a big drinker into an alcohol-free man in Australian culture. It certainly wasn't all plain sailing and he intentionally altered where and how he socialised in order to succeed on his sober mission but any losses have clearly been overshadowed by all the gains. Kris Swierz was a pro snowboarder on the Sims team when the team included Todd Richards, Chris Roach, Terry Kidwell, and Shaun Palmer. Kris competed in halfpipe and eventually landed a solid contract with Liquid Snowboards. He traveled the world with the Ride, Liquid, and 5150 pro team which included more heavies like Brushie, Ranquet, and Rocket Reeves. Kris is now living in Baja Mexico, surfing everyday and running Topia Retreat in Pescadero. Quinn Sandvold is one of the most influential pro riders of the 1990's. He helped usher in the era of fat pants and wide stances and the no bullshit attitude that persists to this day.  Quinn worked with Nitro and Wave Rave designing the next generation of boards and outerwear. Spring has arrived. Finally. It’s been a long and brutal winter in Atchison, Kansas. The interesting thing about Spring is that it signals a rebirth. Winter brings death, Spring brings that death back to life. And the birds' chirp. Which is always nice. Six episodes down in this series and tonight things start to shift. When last we left her, Amelia Earhart had an idea. And that idea was to fly around the world at the equator. Because of her connection to Purdue University she now had her vessel. A state-of-the-art Lockheed Electra 10E that was dubbed “the flying laboratory”. There are also a couple of characters that enter Amelia’s life at this point. Characters that will forever be etched into history alongside her. One especially. Tonight, we discuss the first leg of her world flight and where that leg took her; Hawaii. All was well, spirits were up, and it seemed like Amelia Earhart was well on her way to adding “world flyer” to her already huge list of career accomplishments. Then, shortly after 5:40 Am on the morning on March 20th, 1937 everything changed. On takeoff, at Luke field, Amelia Earhart ground-looped her aircraft. We’ll talk a lot about this tonight. Pay close attention to the testimony throughout this episode. In the end, you decide. Did Amelia Earhart make a potentially fatal error on takeoff? Or was something else at play? We continue our interview with legendary mountain biker, Kirt Voreis. Transitioning from Yeti Factory Racing to the Specialized Mountain Dew team with Shaun Palmer, Kirt discusses racing in the glory days of downhill with its ups, downs and hijinx. When the team disbanded, it was off to Haro where Kirt continued racing, but founded the AllRide Tour as a way to take his love of street riding and dirt jumping to the next level. During this time, he filmed his ground-breaking MTB video part in the Matt Collins movie, Evolution, influencing the next generation of slopestylers and freeriders. The discussion continues as Kirt gets on to the Santa Cruz Syndicate, finally retiring from racing. During a visit to Bend, Oregon, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kirt Voreis, legendary human, legendary mountain biker, to discuss his life and his career. Honored to have Cam McCaul sitting shotgun during the interview, we listened as Kirt shared stories of a challenging childhood surrounded by drug use, gangs and a difficult home life. Despite these obstacles, the arrival of a dedicated step-father, as well as, a passion for skateboarding, motorcycles and bicycles helped Kirt find a life of fulfillment as he made a life-long career out of racing and riding mountain bikes.Kirt's influence on our sport since the late 90's is one that can not be denied. In the midst of a successful racing career, he laid the groundwork for modern freeriding and pure fun on two wheels. Shaun Palmer, one of the most successful competitive professional snowboarders to ever live. He's like snowboarding's MJ or Gretzky. He's won X-Games and the Banked Slalom and World Cups and so much more. But before he was the world's greatest athlete he was snowboarding's signature bad ass. If you do a Google search for "snowboarders" his image comes up pretty quickly down the list and he's the only first generation snowboarder in with the Olympians and Travis Rice. American flag outfits and bright red clown hair were his trademarks in the early 90's. He qualified for the Olympic boardercross team in 2010 but tore his achilles and couldn't go. Today, Palmer still lives in Tahoe and has rejoined the Sims team and put out a pro model based on the original clown board.
