At just 16, Tucker Marshall unsuccessfully sought a humble beginning at The J. M. Smucker Company—not in the back office but on its lush grounds, hoping to cut grass. Such an early rejection—due to a company policy favoring employees' families first—did little to deter him. Instead, it left with him an indelible admiration for the company's culture and its loyalty to its extended family. Marshall's career trajectory—although certainly not linear—has been a master class in preparation and perseverance. Redirecting from his initial pursuit of a career in medicine after having fallen in love with economics, he embarked on a formidable journey down the corridors of finance. Starting in Chicago, he cut his teeth on investment banking and credit analysis at ABN AMRO, now part of Bank of America. This formative period honed his financial acumen, which led him to delve deeper into the intricacies of corporate finance and investment. Transitioning into private equity further expanded his horizons, immersing him in the operational dynamics of various industries from steel to automotive. Each role was a building block, enriching his understanding and skill set and preparing him for the strategic financial leadership that would define his later career. In 2012, coming full circle, Marshall finally joined Smucker's, a company that had long stood as a beacon in his community. Rising through the ranks, he became CFO in 2020, at a time when strategic financial leadership had become more crucial than ever. Under his stewardship, Smucker's finance function evolved beyond traditional roles, emphasizing strategic partnerships across the company, fostering growth, and enhancing shareholder value—principles far from the mind of a young man in the same place who once dreamed of simple summer days spent mowing luscious lawns.

As PepsiCo, Inc. positions itself at the forefront of digital advancements, the company recently declared its intention to purchase $175 million of Instacart's Series A preferred convertible stock. This pivotal move was revealed alongside Instacart's Form S-1 filed on August 25 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), indicating plans for its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO). In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the long-awaited IPO, Instacart's recent sales history and PepsiCo's investment strategy. With the Instacart IPO date looming, the strategic moves by both PepsiCo and Instacart stand as a testament to their commitment to shaping the digital trajectory of the grocery sector. The team wonders whether Instacart will continue to grow post-pandemic and how it will continue to innovate in the online grocery sector. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about the J.M. Smucker Company's recent acquisition of Hostess Brands. The Hostess transaction is valued at roughly $4.6 billion when excluding the debt, with Jif peanut butter producer Smucker agreeing to pay Hostess shareholders a sum of $34.25 per share. Smucker's investment in Hostess comes at a time when significant US packaged food companies are on the hunt to broaden their brand collections, especially as the financial windfalls from the pandemic era begin to ebb. The alliance with Smucker is a significant turning point for Hostess, which has previously faced bankruptcy (in 2004 and 2012). The reasons ranged from excessive debt incurred by private equity owners to a lack of innovative snacking options. While the value is high, the team agrees that the transaction is a positive move for both Smucker and Hostess Brands. It's Tuesday, February 28th, A.D. 2023. Today marks the eighth-year anniversary of the airing of The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Woke companies that target Christians and conservatives Fox News has put together a list of woke companies that go after conservatives and Christians in the U.S. Bank of America tops the list of banks, as well as U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, and First Republic.    Under the transportation category, the woke-est companies include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.   In the retail category, the worst culprits now include Best Buy, Home Depot, Kohl's, Macy's, Madewell, Target, and Walmart. The woke-est online retailers include Amazon, Chewy, eBay, Etsy, and Shopify. The food and beverage “wokies” include Ben & Jerry's, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's, McDonald's, PepsiCo, Starbucks, and the J.M. Smucker Company.    The study is based on the 1792 Exchange review of 1,000 companies on “the likelihood a company will cancel a contract or client, or boycott, divest, or deny services based on views or beliefs." Disturbingly, Home Depot "advertised flyers to its employees about confronting their ‘white privilege, Christian privilege, heterosexual privilege, able-bodied privilege,' etc."  Fake Medical Sharing group was a scam What was purported to be the Medical Cost Sharing Ministry has been closed down by the FBI. It targeted “like-minded Christians,” but according to government estimates, collected $7.5 million over eight years, but only dispersed $246,000 in covering health care bills, reports the Kansas City Star. Founders James L. McGinnis and Craig A. Reynolds were previous insurance salesmen who allegedly used the scam for their own enrichment.  Legitimate Christian medical sharing ministries include Samaritan Ministries that services 283,000 families, and commits “to retaining no more than 20% of member shares for administrative purposes.” Plus, Christian Healthcare Ministries claims 425,000 members and Medi-Share has 400,000 members sharing $6 billion per year in medical needs.  Church of England approves blessing homosexual relationships Earlier this month, the Church of England General Synod voted to approve blessing homosexual relationships by a vote of 250 to 181.  However, the group is hardly relevant anymore. The breakaway Global Anglican Future Conference now represents 35,000,000 active Anglicans, according to World Magazine. And weekly church attendance for the England communion is only 605,000 persons on a Sunday. That's only 0.9% of the population of the nation, down from 5% in 1960, and down from 40% in 1900.  Winter weather hit Southern California Southern California was slammed with heavy winter weather over the weekend, with a four-day total of 56 inches on Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Plus, Ventura County was hit with seven inches of rain. At this time in the season, the average snowpack is 156% of average. And overall precipitation for the state registers at 132% of average, year to date. In addition, there is more snow to come this week in Southern California, according to the weather forecasts.  Matthew 5:45 says, “Your Father in Heaven. . . makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Archeology verifies Bible Archeology has once more verified ancient biblical records, concerning the Amorites who once controlled some part of the land of Canaan. Two clay tablets, dated in the 21st century BC around the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are now determined to have been written in the Amorite language. As reported in Live Science, some of the phrases have similar sounds to Hebrew. That's not surprising in light of the fact the Amorites lived together for a time in Canaan, until Joshua and others drove them out. The writings refer to Amorite gods and sacrifices.  Joshua told the Israelites in Joshua 24:15 “If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Christian school forfeits because opposing team's trans athlete The Mid-Vermont Christian School girls' basketball team forfeited their fourth game in the playoffs last week because a member of the opposing team was a boy pretending to be a girl, reports Fox News. Vicky Fogg, the Head of School, stated that they withdrew from the tournament because they did not want to compromise the safety of their players. Plus, the White River Junction-based leader said, the “biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game.” Japan boasts the world's oldest population And finally, the world's oldest population lives in Japan. The next three oldest populations are found in Italy, Finland, and Puerto Rico. As of this year, 30% of the Japanese population is over 65 years of age.   Portugal, Greece, Hong Kong, and South Korea are on the rise, soon to catch up with Japan with as much as 40% of the population exceeding 65 years of age, 25 years from now. Today, I have the honor of interviewing Kris Putnam-Walkerly. She's the author of Delusional Altruism: Why Philanthropists Fail To Achieve Change and What They Can Do To Transform Giving. And what's so interesting about this conversation is the overlap because she's teaching about scarcity and how it placed out in the non-profit sector. I know that even if you're not in a non-profit, you're going to enjoy this conversation because we're talking about the themes of how do we move out of scarcity and into more abundance in our lives. Where are the places that this shows up and how is it affecting our decisions? Her book is really inspiring to me. I love the overlap in what we do. I know that you're going to be very inspired by this conversation and probably make some changes as a result. Enjoy... She shared this - "I shifted the work I was doing. I've since become a more trusted advisor and private coach to funders. It's really changed and it was because I had the confidence to invest in myself and not have that scarcity mindset. And recognize that yeah there was something bigger for me. But I needed help. I couldn't get there on my own. And so that's you know how I showed up with my clients as well. There is I think about the lifetime of giving of my clients whether they're currently late 25 or 75. There's so much more to give and if I can help them become more powerful donors then think of the power and change they can have through their giving over their lifetime. And, it was really amazing..." Kris Putnam-Walkerly is a trusted advisor to the world's leading philanthropists. For over 20 years, ultra-high net worth donors, foundations, Fortune 500 companies, celebrity activists and wealth advisors have sought her advice to transform their giving and catapult their impact. As a philanthropy advisor, speaker, and award-winning author, she's helped hundreds of philanthropists strategically allocate over half a billion dollars in grants and gifts. Kris's clients include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, J.M. Smucker Company, Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, Heising-Simons Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Walton Family Foundations, Fujitsu, Blue Shield of California, and Avery Dennison Foundation, among many others. A thought leader in transformational giving®, Kris has been named one of America's Top 20 Philanthropy Speakers for the past three years. She is the author of Delusional Altruism: Why Philanthropists Fail To Achieve Change and What They Can Do To Transform Giving *Wiley, 2020) and Confident Giving: Sage Advice for Funders; a Forbes.com contributor on philanthropy; a global philanthropy content partner to Alliance Magazine; and the US philanthropy expert to the leading Dutch philanthropy media outlet De Dikke Blauwe.

In this conversation we cover a lot of ground from starting one's second career sooner than you think to ruthless prioritization to the fact that people want to be led by genuine, authentic leaders who bring their whole selves to work. And, yes, I do ask him how he balances work and raising two young children.I hope you find the conversation as helpful and insightful as I did. Thank you for being on, Geoff!

In this episode… Philanthropists, donors, and funders genuinely want to make a difference, positively impact their community, and change the world—but they're getting in their way.  Why? A lot of the time, they're clinging on to misguided beliefs and practices, and they're not alone; philanthropy professionals are guilty of this, as well.  Kris Putnam-Walkerly, President of the Putnam Consulting Group, describes this situation as delusional altruism in her book. She says she wrote the book to help funders and philanthropy professionals recognize how they get in their way and what they can do differently to drive a more impactful giving.  In this episode of the Philanthropy212 Podcast, host Penny Cowden sits down with Kris Putnam-Walkerly, President of the Putnam Consulting Group. They talk about the timeliness and relevance of Kris's book, Delusional Altruism: Why Philanthropists Fail To Achieve Change and What They Can Do To Transform Giving. Highlights of their conversation include how families, foundations, and corporations can have more impactful philanthropy, how donors get in their own way when making a positive impact, and more.
