In this episode, hosts John Reade and Joe Cavatoni from the World Gold Council interview Sakhila Mirza, Deputy Chief Executive and General Counsel at the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) to learn more about the LBMA's role in the global gold and precious metals industries.  Sakhila provides a detailed overview of the LBMA's role as a membership organisation for participants in the Loco London Precious Metals Market. She outlines their standards including the Good Delivery List, the Global Precious Metals Code and the Responsible Gold Guidance.  The conversation then moves on to how technology and the GBI programme can support greater transparency across the gold supply chain. Finally, Sakhila, John and Joe dive into the LBMA's sustainability and responsible sourcing programme, which includes a discussion on the Gold Principles Group and pan-industry initiatives, International Bullion Centres, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining.     [1.20] Who is the LBMA and what is their role in the global precious metals industry? [5.03] LBMA Membership requirements and the Global Precious Metals Code [9.46] Sakhila provides an overview of the Gold Bar Integrity Programme [16:24] LBMA's gold industry-focused initiatives [24:08] How the LBMA is addressing challenges in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector  [27:39] Sakhila shares a fun fact about gold    Additional Resources: www.gold.org https://www.lbma.org.uk/ Gold Bar Integrity    Notable Quotes: “We are a membership-based organisation, but we have the ability to self-regulate, so what that means is if a refiner does not meet that criteria, does not meet those standardised rules that we have for every refiner, the LBMA has enforcement powers, which means that that refiner is removed from the Good Delivery List.” -Sakhila Mirza “We have a Global Precious Metals Code. This was something that the LBMA held the pen on when it came to drafting the Global Precious Metals Code, and is enforced by the LBMA and every member must attest to the code… From the LBMA perspective, it's a code that applies to the entire industry, whether you're a member of the LBMA or not.” -Sakhila Mirza “We announced earlier this year, in March of 2024, that the LBMA will be launching the LBMA GBI database.” -Sakhila Mirza “As you said, 20% of the overall supply is ASM (artisanal small-scale mining). If you take that 20%, less than 2% is going through the LBMA refiners. Where is the rest going?” -Sakhila Mirza About World Gold Council We are a membership organisation that champions the role gold plays as a strategic asset, shaping the future of a responsible and accessible gold supply chain. Send me a messageHi, Tom Raftery here! In this special episode of the Sustainable Supply Chain podcast, I look back on 2024's 47 episodes of the podcast. Fittingly given the rise in popularity of AI, I do this through the lens of Google Notebook's AI-generated insights. So in this 2024 review, we're unpacking three major themes from the year:AI's Role in Sustainability: From satellite monitoring of deforestation to predictive maintenance that cuts waste and improves safety, AI has revolutionised how companies approach sustainability.Collaboration is Key: Sustainability thrives on partnerships, whether it's businesses working with suppliers to tackle Scope 3 emissions or startups collaborating with corporates for fresh solutions. It's all about breaking down silos and raising the bar together.Circular Economy in Action: Moving from “take, make, waste” to “reduce, reuse, recycle,” businesses are finding innovative ways to repurpose waste and rethink design for lasting impact.2024 proved sustainability isn't optional—it's essential for resilience, growth, and survival. I'll be back on 6th January with exciting new episodes. Happy holidays and here's to a sustainable 2025!What's Next?Catch upcoming episodes with Jenna Fink and Kristin Naragon. They use their expertise to build responsible supply chains that work for people, for business and for the planet across many sectors including mining. Assheton is an expert and NED on responsible sourcing, sustainability standards, environmental markets, non-financial risk, and responsible investment. Today, he discusses the material change for renewables and responsible sourcing considerations for the clean energy transition. KEY TAKEAWAYS Assheton the importance of anticipating and understanding the evolving regulatory landscape and stakeholder expectations in the mining industry. TDI Sustainability offers a range of services to help mining companies navigate and exceed local legal requirements, including community engagement, biodiversity protection, and digital tools for compliance. The mining industry is experiencing a shift towards responsible sourcing and ESG principles, driven by increased regulatory controls, market demands, and the need for sustainable practices. TDI Sustainability's focus on sustainability and responsible sourcing aligns with the industry's growing emphasis on environmental and social responsibility, positioning them to support mining companies in meeting future challenges and opportunities. BEST MOMENTS "I think it's about anticipation. So you've got to sort of anticipate where things are headed, but then get granular about when the expectations are going to hit." "The timeline of those indigenous groups might be totally different and could span decades rather than years."  "There's something like 60 regulations around the world now, which have something to do with responsible sourcing or responsible supply chains."  "I think mining needs to be at the table when these things are being set." The European Commission has recently adopted a proposal for a Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence, which aims to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour throughout global value chains. Companies are at the heart of the proposal and they will be required to identify and, where necessary, prevent, end or mitigate adverse impacts of their activities on human rights and on the environment. A number of Member States have already introduced national rules on due diligence and some companies have taken measures at their own initiative. The due diligence regulation is very important for industries, especially the ones that largely depend on the import of critical raw materials, such as battery manufacturing. On 17 March, the European Council adopted a so-called “general approach” to the batteries regulation, following a proposal tabled by the European Commission in December 2020. The regulation aims to set up a circular economy sector by targeting all stages of the life cycle of batteries, including responsible sourcing. The Council and Parliament will now start trilogue negotiations with a view to progressing towards an agreement. Some industry stakeholders argue that policymakers should seek a coherent and consistent approach on sustainability and due diligence throughout EU legislation, as choosing specific approaches for different legislative pieces could lead to inconsistencies and confusion. Moreover, they stress the importance of industry-led schemes aligned with standards recognised by independent third parties, such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and approved by the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labelling Alliance (ISEAL Alliance), as they are tailored to the specific characteristics of specific industries. Another point brought forward by the industry is the importance of having realistic time-frames for action.Relisten to this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to find out about responsible sourcing and due diligence. How can companies best develop tools and standards that fit the upcoming European legislation? And how can the European Commission ensure there is a coherent approach for all actors involved?

Over the last decade, responsible sourcing has become a topic of broad interest. Policymakers, consumers and companies have all referred to it as a way to address the sustainability risks of global mineral supply chains, but the term has also been used to refer to a wide range of other sustainability objectives. An industry that is particularly susceptible to the issue is battery manufacturing, as it is largely dependent on critical raw material imports. In the past few years, stakeholders have highlighted supply chain risks related to raw materials in batteries, comprising environmental, social and governance risks. To work towards responsible sourcing, the European Union has been investing in several initiatives, most of which are aligned with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) “Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas”.In the field of batteries, the European Commission is taking concrete actions. In its Proposal for a regulation concerning batteries and waste batteries, it has outlined responsible sourcing as a means to achieve the objective of reducing environmental and social impacts. The proposal highlights the essential role of batteries to achieve the EU objective of decarbonisation of the economy and other challenges related to sustainable development.Apart from responsible sourcing, the Commission is also working to improve the EU regulatory framework on sustainable corporate governance in general. The framework would enable companies to focus on long-term sustainable value creation rather than short-term benefits. It would also help companies to better manage sustainability-related matters in their own operations and value chains in regards to social and human rights, climate change and the environment.Relisten to this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to find out about sustainable governance, responsible sourcing and the importance of due diligence in the battery supply chain.

“One of the most beautiful parts of responsible sourcing is the effort put into raising communities and empowering the farm workers that feed our families.” - Jessie Gunn (3:52)  When mentioning responsible sourcing in the produce industry, most people may immediately think of the standards implemented to yield healthy, safe produce. However, responsible sourcing is about more than just the produce itself. It's important to recognize that people, planet, and resources are all symbiotic. The same parents who are providing healthy, sustainable food sources for their children also want to make sure that they have a beautiful green part to play. It's crucial to treat farm workers fairly, and also make sure that the crops they are harvesting and handling each day aren't poisoned with countless chemicals. It takes health awareness in each area to establish sustainable and responsible sourcing. “If we want to provide good, healthy work environments for workers, we have to be environmentally sound as well.” - Jessie Gunn   While the words “Fair Trade” are often thrown around, not everyone is aware of what this standard entails. In order for a company to be fair trade certified, they have to be willing to submit to third-party audits, both scheduled and unscheduled. These audits include interviewing farm workers and reviewing documentation and growing practices. The standard encompasses much more than just the produce.   With the rise of awareness through social media and technology, consumers are demanding responsible sourcing. In fact, the last two years have shown a 19% increase in purchases of items including “free from” labels, Certified Fair Trade, B Corp produce, and products that support empowering women. This is the most dramatic increase in purchasing power in decades.   Listen in to this week's episode to learn more about responsibly sourced produce, internationally sourced produce, the rise in consumer awareness, and how you can make a difference in the produce industry.   “Food feeds your whole person. It feeds your values, it feeds your moral alignment. It is about feeding your family what's best for them to grow them into better human beings.” - Jessie Gunn (26:02)   To learn more about responsible sourcing practices, find Jessie Gunn on LinkedIn, and visit fairtradeusa.org. Be intentional about your produce purchases. If you buy fruit or vegetables that make claims about their sourcing, go to their website and do your research. Be more informed, be more responsible, and help us increase responsible sourcing for a more sustainable produce industry.   Some Topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction // Jessie Gunn - 1:18 What is Responsible Sourcing? - 3:12 Understanding Fair Trade - 7:13 Fresh Produce is an International Collaboration - 12:13 Environmental Standards - 15:25 2017 Data Points and Consumers' Interest - 19:43 The Main Takeaway - 25:12 Wrap-up - 28:49   How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/316715662104709/ Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you're at in life and business! This week on Food Without Borders, host Sari Kamin is joined in the studio by Ariel Barbouth, founder and CEO of Nuchas, which brings Argentinian food staples to NYC. In 2011, Nuchas opened its first retail location in Times Square, but it wasn't until they started their first food truck in 2012 that people started to take notice. Nuchas quickly built a reputation among the NYC street food scene, winning the Rookie of the Year Vendy Award in 2013, and in the same year opening their second retail location in Greeley Square. Barbouth's goal is to redefine the culinary concept of "hand-held foods" so that no utensils are needed, and so that the flavors appeal to all cultures, even to those with dietary restrictions, using only quality ingredients that are responsibly sourced. Today’s guests are two boundary breaking women in the food world—butchers Erika Nakamura and Jocelyn Guest. They are the co-owners of White Gold Butchers, a new hot spot on the Upper West Side of New York that’s both a butcher shop and a cozy neighborhood restaurant. Erika, who was born and raised in Tokyo, got into butchery after working in some of New York’s top kitchens. Jocelyn, meanwhile, is an Army brat who moved every summer until she was 13. Prior to finding her calling, Jocelyn was a comedy writer. We’ll talk about their careers, what it’s like to work with their co-owners Chef April Bloomfield and rock-n-roll restaurateur Ken Friedman, and how they find mindful farm partners. But sure to check out the farm section of their website to see how seriously they take sourcing.
