Anybody else in disbelief that it’s already April? 2020 was a year that felt like a decade and, now, 2021 is just flying by. But it's all good because we’ve dusted off our podcast gear and are excited to share a very special conversation with two amazing work-from-anywhere travelers. We stumbled upon Will and Jess Sueiro while researching info on travel visas in February 2017. We loved their passion and energy and proceeded to binge-watch every video on their YouTube channel about their travels as digital nomads with their two kids, Avalon and Largo. We were early into our long-term travel planning, and their insights, practical instruction and passion put us on the perfect trajectory. We resonated so much with them that we reached out and said hello. Within weeks of connecting, they launched WorldTowning and we scheduled a consultation and, ultimately, attended their inaugural WorldTowning University program. Needless to say, they've guided and inspired us in immeasurable ways. Check out this episode for a spirited and personal glimpse into the Sueiros’ journey from a “living the American Dream” family (but wanting more) to a globe-trotting, “seize the day” quad of adventurers who have carved out a lifestyle that feeds them. You’ll discover that the process isn't always easy, and it often manifests over time as an initial desire transforms into a tactical plan. Listen and learn what it takes to face down your fears, craft a game plan, take the leap … and never look back. In Episode 139 of Look At My Records! Tom and co-host Zach Romano chatted with Wesley Bunch of the Philadelphia dream-pop band Suburban Living. The band just released their excellent third album, How To Be Human, on Egghunt Records, but the road to get there was full of challenges. In 2018, Bunch’s home caught fire on New Year’s Eve, leaving their third album in a bit of a limbo period. The band rebounded and were about to hit the road in 2020, until COVID-19 hit, canceling their tour and delaying the release of the record until August. The record was well worth the wait, though, as the songs are gorgeous and dreamy with towering synths, celestial guitars, and an awesome sax solo on “Indigo Kids.”In our interview, we talked about the challenges Suburban Living faced leading up to the release of How To Be Human, Wesley’s experiences touring with the legendary shoegaze band Swirlies, their new approach to recording, and a whole lot more. This episode features records from Hole, Buzzcocks, La Sera, Swirlies, and No Joy.How to Be Human is available on limited edition green vinyl at select independent record stores and on standard black vinyl via Egghunt Records. No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank. You may be able to get legal bike boost soon now that lawmakers have voted to legalize electric bikes and scooters statewide. More Perfect

This season, More Perfect is taking its camera lens off the Supreme Court and zooming in on the words of the people: the 27 amendments that We The People have made to our Constitution. We're taking on these 27 amendments both in song and in story. This episode is best listened to alongside 27: The Most Perfect Album, an entire album (an ALBUM!) and digital experience of original music and art inspired by the 27 Amendments. Think of these episodes as the audio liner notes. The 25th and 26th Amendments-- ratified in 1967 and 1971, respectively-- are some of the newest additions to our founding document. However, they tackle some pretty basic questions: who gets to rule, and who gets to vote? If a president dies or is incapacitated, who takes over? And how old do you have to be in order to participate in American democracy? In recent months, the 25th Amendment has swirled in and out of news cycles as Americans debate what it takes to declare a president unfit for office. But this episode looks back, even before the 25th Amendment was ratified: a moment in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson became bedridden by stroke, and his wife, Edith Wilson, became our country’s unofficial first female president. The 26th Amendment is best encapsulated in a Vietnam-era slogan: “Old enough to fight, old enough to vote.” Eighteen-year-olds at the time argued that if they were old enough to be drafted to fight in the War, they were old enough to have a voice in our democracy. But what about today, when even younger Americans are becoming victims of gun violence and finding themselves at the center of national political debates? Does it mean we should lower the voting age even further? When you're done with the episode, check out songs by Devendra Banhart and Suburban Living inspired by Amendments 25 and 26 on 27: The Most Perfect Album. Rob and Callum present a podcast with new music to listen to in puzzlingly abandoned buildings in deeply gentrified areas. For such an area you'll be needing to listen to sparse tense avant-garde from Thollem/Oliveros/Cline, some city living folk blues from Monomyth and some mellow jazz hip hop to chill you the F out. For everything else there's power pop (of course there is) from Talkies, swinging punch the air synth stuff from Suburban Living, contemplative whimsy from Slip Disco and the wonderfully infantile pop of Benny Gringo. There's plenty more too, take a listen and enjoy.

BiH Favoritest Songs of the Year: 2014

Better in Headphones

I've been making these mixes for over 4 years  now and pretty much every year I make some sort of statement about how end-of-year lists are stupid. I just can't stand the precision of a numbered, ordered list of music. But recently a friend asked me what my favorite songs of this year were (after I said I wouldn't give a year-end list of albums), so I went through all the BiH mixes from this year and picked my favorite songs. Here they are, in absolutely no particular order. This was an interesting year from music. It was not dominated by 'the great album', though there were some great EPs (Doss, Ana Caprix, Diarrhea Planet)). Mostly, this was a great year for songs. I had a few albums I got into this year (Real Estate, Haerts, Fucked Up, Temples...I am not counting the new Panda Bear because officially it hasn't come out yet, and until I have the vinyl it doesn't count), but really I am so wrapped up in making these mixes that I paid more attention to the great songs everyone was putting out rather than the handful of great albums that hit the shelves. But really, if you are only going to listen to 1 BiH mix per year, then this is the one for 2014. I have never produced a year-end mix before but I think this is something I'll start doing from now on. All of these songs have appeared on BiH mixes previously, so for the few avid listeners out there, you'll recognize all of this. That's okay. This should be a fun mix for all. I definitely noticed that I have  given greater weight to music that came out later in the year, and that's possibly because of how I went about accumulating music in the 2nd half of the year (and ended up with a better selection), or maybe it's just because I already overplayed my favorites from earlier in the year. At any rate, here they are in honestly no particular order (or even any particular number of songs; I only decided to pick 1 hours' worth of my favorites from the last 12 months...we ended up with a 'top 15' mix). I only wanted to make a mix that included my favorites and actually had some decent flow. Enjoy! And Happy New Year... See you in 2015.BiH Favoritest of the Year: 2014 feat. (in order for once): John Southworth, Moodoid, Desert Stars, Breakfast in Fur, Shocking Pinks, Temples, Sucre, Suburban Living, Doss (remixed by Ana Caprix), Rubblebucket (remixed by Body Language), Pepa Knight, Milo Greene, Morning Harvey, Betty Who, Ana Caprix

It's starting to rain here in Santa Cruz. And the dark nights come much earlier than just 2 short months ago, when we could still grasp the last light around 7:30 or so. It's a great time to cuddle up with a loved one, some great music, some wine and just relax. There has also been a lot of great new music this past month, making the days seem just a bit longer than they actually are. This mix is really flexible. You can play it loud or quiet and be equally rewarded. Play it in headphones or speakers, with bass turned up or down low. Play it once or on repeat a few times. At only 43 minutes long, it is among the shorter BiH mixes, but that's okay by me. Listen lovingly, and give hugs.BiH 43 feat. Suburban Living, Breakfast in Fur, Highs, Editors (remixed by Dinner Date), The Notorious B.I.G. (remixed by Sterling Flow), Dan Bodan, Osca, Pepa Knight, Clanch, Panda Bear, Bon Iver (remixed by Satchmode)
