Hello, hi! I can't seem to stop talking about guilt - but  I PROMISE this is the last I'll say about it (at least until 2025) . The thing that continues to remain problematic and troubling for so many women, the thing that gets in our way is that we're always feeling bad. If we're not feeling bad we're avoiding the things that make us feel bad or managing the feeling to get rid of it. What if there was another way? Today's episode is for anyone who ever wondered “what would I be like if I could get rid of the guilt, for good?” Episode Summary Check in: I share that I'm finally feeling my mental health improve It takes considerable effort when you feel terrible; nothing feels like medium effort and this recovery has felt that way I'm lucky to have a lot of support already available to me when I need it and I'm so thankful for my friends and family who have connected with me and supported me. Medium Effort At the beginning of Season 4 I was really helping people get out of their own way, and examining how willing we are (or aren't) to take that step and celebrate our desires and visions for our lives. But what listeners kept pointing me to was that their guilt was a tremendous obstacle on that path. If they were ever going to get out of their own way, they were going to have to get rid of the guilt. 31% of people polled on my instagram stories said that theri personal expectations drive a lot of their burnout , they struggle knowing what to let go of and they often feel unsure of what's normal, and what's social media. At the end of the summer in an open call for responses, the IG community again shared DOZENS of unique reasons they feel bad. But it wasn't until episode 113 and 114 with Tami Hackbarth where I realized that people needed a practical way to examine their guilt and move past it with certainty and grace. Today's episode features two hallmark reasons why you should spend medium effort to get over your guilt - and both of them were featured in a book I'm currently reading: Likeable Badass by Dr. Alison Fragle.- specifically page 77, and 78 of the book Embrace the power of your decisions: our decisions can be powerful but we use guilt to minimize how much we want to use that power, instead letting our guilt make our decisions feel like a burden or like a way to keep staying small. Imagine if you chose to feel powerful instead of guilty about your decisions. Women see each decision as a chance to fail but what if we saw them as a chance to embrace our power.  Guilt drives apologies: Women apologize more than men becuse women have a lower threshold for what constitutes an apology worthy event. This low threshold for apology also comes with a caveat - you're not just feeling like you owe more apologies but you also feel like you're wronged and owed and apology more often. As women we need to raise the bar (ALOT) on what constitutes a transgression or wrongdoing because it's not just getting in our way, it's also getting in the way of our relationships and perceptions of others. In the episode I walk you through a practical exercise I call “catch and release” so you can notice your guilt, examine it for a transgression and then either release it with an apology or move on/show up with a decision. Mindful Fun: Make a list of small decisions you're excited to make and look forward to embracing the power that comes with choosing your clothes, picking out a movie, or deciding what to bring to the holiday potluck.    Other Episodes you might like: Episode 119: 9 Small Things I'm No Longer Feeling Guilty About Episode 120: 9 Small Things My Husband Never Feels Guilty About with guest Handsome Face Episode 121: Mindful Content Creators and the Quest to Curate a Perfect Childhood with guest Stephanie Cunningham Episode 114: The Difference Between Guilt and Shame when it comes to Self-Care with guest Tami Hackbarth   Medium Lady Reads Episode 31- Your Reading Slump is Totally Normal Connect with Erin: Instagram: @medium.lady Email: mediumladytalks@gmail.com  Explore more book-related content on "Medium Lady Reads." - link to Spotify Instagram: @mediumladyreads

In part one of our conversation we talk all about the re-balancing of domestic life as a means to find the time for self care. Make sure you catch up on Part one of our conversation in episode 113!   Episode Summary   Once we find domestic freedom we've finally managed to create time for our own meaningful self care In order to access guilt-free self care we have to first assert that taking care of ourselves isn't bad and doesn't make us bad people: it makes us human Tami shares how she engages couples to begin determining the distribution of domestic labour as a Fair Play Facilitator Tami describes Unicorn Space and explains the benefits of finding personhood outside of parenthood, partnership and professional work I share my personal story of why starting the podcast was a big part of my own Unicorn Space  What should you do with your Unicorn Space? Hello, hi! Today's episode is part one of my interview with Tami Hackbarth a life + work coach, keynote speaker, author, podcast host and Fair Play Facilitator. Tami's work helps women feel less like crap so they have the energy and bandwidth to create the world they want to live in. In Part 1 of our conversation we talk all about the re-balancing of domestic life as a means to find the time for self care. Tune in next week for Part 2 of the conversation where we talk more about that actual self care and how to make the most of your newfound free time!   Episode Summary The shocking question Tami's boss asked her that started it all: Are you happy? Tami's then set to work conducting a year long experiment to take care of herself and the results probably won't surprise you but her commitment definitely will! The odds are we run into burnout after leaving our needs unmet - even those needs that we're not aware of. It can be vulnerable to admit we have needs just like everybody else and it can be very difficult to ask for help to have those needs fulfilled. Having those needs met means we have to give up control, especially in our absence Tami and Erin compare notes on how it feels to parent our kids based on their gender and the expectations on us to care about their appearance accordingly] When we disengage from the scripts about gendered work, we set the stage for freedom for everyone in the household to let go of societal norms and pressures You have to start letting go of your attachment to domestic duties, relinquishing them to your kids and partner - otherwise you'll have to do them.FOREVER. The hilarious conversation Tami had with a 4th grader after he told her she was “the laziest grownup he'd ever met” Some of this is unappealing - usually because it's not a quick fix, even though it works!   Other Episodes you might like: Episode 109: Medium Lady Unfiltered - Three Truths About Motherhood Content on Instagram and TikTok Episode 107: From Anxiety to Action - How to reclaim your mental headspace with guest and coach Madeline Farquharson Episode 108: From Self-Neglect to Self-Care - Prioritizing your Needs with guest and coach Madeline Farquarson   Connect with Tami: Website: www.tamihackbarth.com Instagram: @tamihackbarth  Free workshop! In this conversation, we're talking about taking the best care of yourself by addressing "deferred maintenance." In this episode, Tami and I talk about: how to approach deferred maintenance. what happens when you leave things unattended in your life, and how they can cause problems when they are not addressed. These can include getting the right amount of sleep, or getting basic checkups for your health. that taking care of the basics honors our future senior citizen selves, as it allows us to remain healthy and independent as we age. how our bodies change as we enter our 30s and beyond, and how it's important to intentionally make time and space for our own daily care the decline in muscle mass that all women experience after age 30 what's brought us joy in the last year: unexpected laughing, spending time outside, and swimming. In this episode, I'm talking about the term "languishing," which is something that Adam Grant recently wrote about in the New York Times. His article was titled "There's a Name For The Blah That You're Feeling, and It's Called Languishing." When I read it, it struck me that languishing really is one of the predominant emotions that you find in the messy middle. It's languishing. Isn't full on depression. It's not boredom or anger. It's not any of those. It's just that vague feeling, that things aren't great. Adam Grant describes it this way, "Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you're muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield, and it might be the dominant emotion of 2021." And, in reading this I felt similar to the way I did when I read about people naming the feeling of grief that was a predominant emotion at the beginning of the pandemic. It has also given me something to call the annoyance and mild overwhelm I've felt recently, and that I even did a podcast episode about. This low-level funk made me feel that I needed to try and do something, anything, to find my way out and into something else. And so I signed up with Tami Hackbarth's "Deferred Maintenance" program and I tackled just one thing. Janae and Tami define and debunk self-care while paralleling the peaks and valleys of their own self-care journies. Show Notes: Three Self Care questions are asked, What is self care? What is your biggest struggle with self care? What are your Self Care Pet Peeves? Self Care is a four pronged approach with Body, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual integrations. Self-care for one person isn't going to be self-care for another person. When we practice self-compassion, we speak to ourselves like a good friend. It is important to be mindful around how you are talking to yourself. Self-care is a practical and magical approach to Body, Mind and Soul, including your finances. Self-care is anything that brings you ease. If you think of self-care as your house, your house has a foundation and then you have the walls and the entire structure to store your goodies. Self-knowledge is powerful. Once you know your triggers, you can do a lot of work around how to set yourself up for success. Self-reflection is an important part of setting yourself up for success. The power of vulnerability and importance of boundaries. If you don't reflect on past experiences, you will say yes again to something you don't want to do. Struggle happens when losing track of rituals and routines when things get busy. How a meditation practice can be beneficial. Admitting our struggles is very powerful. The harder it is to meditate, the longer you should meditate. Self-care is 100% necessary to show-up in your life. Tami talks about her experience when the teacher goes back to school. Many people think that self-care is selfish. Back to basics: Living a healthy life is not just working out. It also includes sleeping enough and taking care of the basics. Humans are messy. The human experience is meant to be messy. Be more real so other people can be the same. 3 Key Points: 1. Tami and Janae define and debunk self-care by sharing what it is and isn´t. 2.Tami shares strategies around knowing what you need and planning for success. 3. Self-care is 100% necessary to show up in life everyday and it is not selfish. It is a necessary practice to be in tune with yourself and the world around you.
