To say that Artie Kamiya has dedicated his life to his profession would be a massive understatement. This man has had a massive impact not only on the students who were lucky enough to have him as their teacher, but indirectly tens of thousands of children and youth who's teachers were lucky enough to meet him. Artie could very easily be considered the “Godfather of #PhysEd.” Born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Artie was overweight as an elementary school child, and he was often subjected to many of the negative aspects of traditional physical education. However, he was fortunate to have been encouraged through a strong junior high physical education program and slowly became interested in the sport of gymnastics. He competed in high school, collegiate level (Los Angeles City College, Cal State LA), and at the 1972 National NCAA Gymnastics Championships on the rings. Upon receiving a Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) degree from the University of North Carolina, he worked as an elementary physical education teacher for Wake County Public Schools (Raleigh, NC). While in this position, he was able to become involved in curriculum writing, presenting, and other leadership activities. In 1983, he was hired by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a Physical Education Consultant. In 1996, he was promoted to the Section Chief for Arts and Healthful Living. In this position, he directed a group of 11 professionals representing the Arts (Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts) and Healthful Living (Health, Physical Education, Athletics, Driver Education). From 2001-2005, he was the Senior Administrator for K-12 Healthful Living Education for Wake County Schools. Artie was recognized in 2004 as the National Physical Education Administrator of the Year. He has been called one of the “nation's leading experts for K-12 health and physical education.” He is the President & Founder of the Great Activities Publishing Company, a company known for their innovative K-12 PE publications, services, and workshops. His work has appeared on numerous ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox TV affiliates, as well as on National Public Radio and in USA Today. He retired from public service in 2005, but continued to follow his passion as a health and physical education advocate through his work within the Great Activities Publishing Company. He was recognized by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education as the 2007 “Joy of Effort” Award winner. The words, impossible to understand as I watch you. Baby A and Baby B she says. Not knowing that you are named and loved. She must not see you so full of life, like the renewal of spring. As you squirm in black and white Like a bloom on a tree Promising bright flowers for tomorrow. As she moves the magic wand that gives us a glimpse We see you, next to each other. Together from the start. One beginning that formed two hearts. How could this promise of life be false? Like a brief cold snap That brings the return of a cruel and punishing winter While ice settles on the blooms. We wait. We hope. We pray. And then, the thaw begins As you two arrive and the world is again bathed in sunlight. Those lingering words are gone, As the doctor beams at you both. But the words are never forgotten. Frozen in the memory of two parents mangled from the cold. Submit a poem to be featured on a future episode: noah.waspe@gmail.com Do you have an share-worthy teaching practice? Dan Gaudiano is the Academy Science Department Head at Punahou School. He has a BA in geology from Colgate University. At the University of South Carolina Columbia he earned an MS in geology, and then a  Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Dan has written in scientific journals, authored scientific papers, been a coastal geologist and a scientific researcher. He was the lead coordinator for a water conservation project in Hawai'i and has been a curriculum resource teacher with an emphasis on technology integration. (Catch this article in the Punahou Bulletin to know more about ways Dan thinks “beyond the classroom.”) A number of my colleagues have mentioned Dan's seminal presentation on student stress at the 2019 Schools of the Future Conference. Most of all, what you get from reviewing Dan's body of work so far is that he cares deeply about kids and learning. There is no doubt that he has a growth mindset and is continually developing his teaching practice. In this interview Dan and I talked about inch deep and a mile wide, vs. posthole learning. We talked about student travel and his own trip to Samoa as part of the Malama Honua voyages. We went deep into capstone projects, design thinking, competency-based learning and what it takes to build communities of practice. It was a marvelous conversation. Kay Sturm is one of the most intentional people I have ever met. I knew this from observing her practice years ago when she taught at The School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability. It's still true today as she works to stand up and make fly The Umi Project, whose vision is to bring people and ideas together through intentionally designed education. Listen as Kay and I work through deeper learning, essential question-based learning, communities of practice and much, much more. From  Hawaii to Alaska, Kay has had  a diverse array of experiences and roles in education. Kay received her Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California; her dissertation focused on the “Facilitation of Authentic Teaching and Learning in a PBL Environment.” She is an adjunct faculty professor for the University of Southern California, Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, and works as the lead education consultant with clients partnered with The Umi Project. She is also a National Faculty member for the national organization, PBLWorks, under the Buck Institute for Education, and facilitates PBL101 workshops around the country. In 2016, she was named Charter School Teacher of the Year in the State of Hawaiʻi.  Kay started as a special education teacher at Waianae High School on the island of Oahu. She has worked at both the middle and high school level in the classroom and at the leadership level, as an instructional coach and coordinator for student-focused experiences. She is passionate about teaching content through the lens of sustainability, project-based learning and place-based education. Kay now lives in Alaska, but travels extensively, and intentionally.
